Laura P. Schiltz
Laura P. Schiltz, 84, SERVICES: Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Friday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Ely, with the Rev. James Scheuer as celebrant. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the Mass Friday. Spring burial will be in Ely Cemetery. Arrangements are by Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely. Memorials are preferred to be sent by the family to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in Minneapolis.
Laura P. Schiltz, 84, of Ely died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
She was born Oct. 17, 1917, in Waterville, Maine, to Adelard and Eva Rose (Poulin) Bureau, the fifth of 10 children. She was a 1936 graduate of Waterville High School. She was employed at Sisters Hospital in Waterville as a medical stenographer for four years and spent four years working with a private physician as a stenographer before joining the Women’s Army Corps (WACs). She earned the rank of staff sergeant at Fort Des Moines, Iowa, where she met William A. Schiltz. On Jan. 14, 1946, Bill and Laura were married after their discharge from the Army.
Survivors include two daughters, Laura P. Summers of Minneapolis, and Melanie R. (Ken) Hall of Richfield, Minn.; two sons, Josef P. (Debra) of Andover, Minn., John A. (Carolyn) of Ely; beloved grandchildren, John W., Nicholas A., and Kayla S. Schiltz, Christopher D., and Jonathon P. Schiltz, and Anna Laura Hall; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harvey, Normand, Arthur, Romeo and Antonid Bureau; her sisters, Juliette Weymouth, Ethel DeRaps, Cecile Cyr and Yvonne Pellerin; her children, William A. Schiltz Jr., and infant daughter, Theresa Rose.
Anton J. Struna
Anton J. Struna, 77, SERVICES: Memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Kerntz Funeral Chapel in Ely. Deacon Greg Hutar will officiate.
Anton J. Struna, 77, of Ely died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, in the Arrowhead Health Care Center in Eveleth.
He was born Feb. 14, 1924, in Ely to Anton and Justina (Rutar) Struna. He worked as a diesel mechanic for 42-plus years, starting for U.S. Steel at the Pioneer Mine in Ely and later working for Minntac, where he retired. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, working as a mechanic on 747s. He will be dearly missed by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He fully appreciated what Mother Nature provided, and from that became the avid woodsman and sportsman he was.
Survivors include three daughters, Loretta Folz of West Palm Beach, Fla., Toni (Dan) Theel of Embarrass, and Terri (Michael) Knox of Brooksville, Fla.; two sons, Ned Struna of South Bend, Ind., and Jon Struna of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four sisters, Mary (William) Boitz of Ely, Anna (Mickey) Myre of Tower, Molly Loshe of Pine River, Minn., and Tina (George) Bahem of Long Island, N.Y.; a brother, Joe (Lois) Struna, of Ely; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Christina Struna; wife and mother of his children, Elma Rachel Perttula Struna; two brothers, John and Martin Struna.
Angela Zeleznikar Mantel
Angela Zeleznikar Mantel, SERVICES: A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Woodland at St. John’s Catholic Church, 4230 St. John’s Ave., Duluth.
Angela Zeleznikar Mantel died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001.
She was born in Ely to Joseph and Johanna (Glinsek) Zeleznikar. She married John J. Mantel, son of Joseph and Mary (Majerle) Mantel, of Ely.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean (Carl) Stueland, and family; brothers, Joe, Jack, Walter, Robert and John; sisters, Molly Trano and Frances Kosanovich.
She was preceded in death by her husband; sisters, Jennie Forneris of Duluth and Mary (John) Bachar of Ely; a brother, Frank, of Duluth.
Belinda A. L’Heureux
Belinda A. L’Heureux, SERVICES: Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Range Funeral Home in Virginia. The Rev. Robert Romig will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Melrude.
She died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center in Duluth.
Dorothy Janet Colvin
Dorothy Janet Colvin, 98, SERVICES: A memorial service will be held at a later date in Biwabik.
Dorothy Janet Colvin, 98, died Nov. 23, 2001, in Chicago.
She was born Oct. 15, 1903, in Biwabik. She graduated from Biwabik High School and Milwaukee Downer College, and taught high school in Wisconsin, Montana and South Dakota. During World War II, she worked at an airplane factory in Long Beach, Calif. After the war, she moved to Chicago, where she worked for many years at the Northwestern University Law Library, retiring in 1995 at the age of 92.
She is survived by nephews William, Robert, David, Dennis and Richard Colvin; a niece, Sydney Anne Colvin Rott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Janet Colvin; siblings, Gilbert, William, George and Jean.
Shirley Lundquist
Shirley Lundquist, 80, Two Harbors, died Sunday Dec. 19, 2010, peacefully at home.
She was born Oct. 2, 1930, to Gilbert and Mabel Dahlberg in Duluth, where she grew up and graduated from Central High School.
She was married to Roy Lundquist for nine years. After her divorce she attended drafting school. She worked as a kitchen designer for several years and later worked as an insurance agent and financial planner.
She had made her home in Two Harbors since 1991 and spent summers at Boulder Lake near Nevis. Shirley enjoyed fishing, traveling, and gardening, and playing piano for the Duluth Playhouse musical productions.
She is survived by her companion, Maretta Muxlow; sons, Roy Victor Lundquist of Two Harbors, and Daniel (Judy) Lundquist of Grand Rapids; a grand- son, Jesse; and brothers, John Peter (Ginny) Dahlberg of O’Fallon, Illinois and David Dahlberg of Edina, and a sister-in-law Gail Dahlberg.
According to Shirley’s wishes, no services will be held.
Ray Runkel
Ray Runkel, 70, of Two Harbors, entered into eternity on Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, unexpectedly at home.
Ray was born Feb. 25, 1940 in Treverton, Penn., to Lester and Gertie (Crissing-er) Runkle. He grew up in Pennsylvania, and later served in the U. S. Air Force, where he was a technical illustrator and taught in a military school.
He continued to work for the federal government as a technical illustrator for several years, then operated a landscape business in New York.
He graduated from Christ for the Nations College in Texas and served as a hospital chaplain and later a campground chaplain. He moved to Minnesota in 2007.
Ray enjoyed woodworking, illustrating, boating, landscaping, sculpting, and photography. He was a member of the National Rifle Association.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Earl.
Ray will be remembered for his servant’s heart, his devotion to God, his upbeat personality, and his sense of humor.
He is survived by his loving wife, TyLa DeVonna; cat, Leonardo; step-children, Adam James Ward, Nicole JoElle Williams and BrieAnna Danielle (Daniel) Wakemup; six step-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence (Marie) Runkle of Sellersville, Penn.; nephews, Scott (Karla) and Michael (Desiree) Runkle and a niece Joann (Jeffrey) Allen.
There was a service Monday at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors followed by burial at Lakeview Cemetery.
Marjorie Snell
Marjorie Jane Snell, 68, of Two Harbors, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born Aug. 20, 1942, to Niilo and Martha (Keranen) Gustafson in Duluth.
Marjorie grew up in Clover Valley and graduated from Clover Valley High School. She married Charles “Bob” Snell and they made their home in Hinckley for nearly 40 years.
Marjorie was a member of First Lutheran Church in Hinckley and Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Bob.
She is survived by her children, James (Erika) of Duluth, Dale (Jessica) of Hinckley, and Marie of Hinckley; and grandchildren, Vander, Payton, Alyssa, Emalee, and Adam.
Memorial services will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at Living Waters Fellowship in Two Harbors and 2 p.m. Monday at First Lutheran Church in Hinckley.
Duane Fransen
Duane M. “Dewey” Fransen, 60, of Knife River, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born Dec. 28, 1949, to George and Lida (Sunde) Fransen in Duluth. Dewey was a lifelong resident of Knife River who drove truck for Ready Mix.
He married Judy Mickelson in September of 1971 in Duluth.
Dewey enjoyed going on road tours, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Dewey was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Sonnyn Torgerson.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Judy, of Knife River; children, Tammy (Brian) Coolidge of Two Harbors, Duane Jr. (Jen) of Two Harbors, Jarrod (Nancy) of Floodwood, Kevin (Jayne) of Knife River, and Tim (Karly) of Silver Bay; grandchildren, Lizzie, Emma, and Jack Coolidge, and Joey, Jamie, Gillian, Molly, Maddy, Hannah, and Ethan Fransen; step-grandchildren, Josh and Jake Yeaton; brother, Ron of Knife River; sisters, Carol (Les) Jackson of Knife River, and Linda Cain of Kansas City; sisters-in-law Bonnie (Jeff) Garner, Joyce (Pat) Gjerdahl, and Pat Torgerson; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A 1 p.m. memorial service was held Thursday at Knife River Lutheran Church.
Wilma Myhre
Wilma Bernice Myhre, 92, of Duluth, went to be with her precious Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and her beloved husband, Ralph, Dec. 6, 2010, in Chris Jensen Health Center.
She was born to William and Laura Harriman in Hovland. She left us the greatest gift a mother can give, a godly legacy.
A Tribute to Mom: Thank you for giving the greatest gift a mother can give, a legacy of love, forgiveness, faith, and hope. Thank you for showing us by example how to be a faithful, devoted mother, grandmother, wife and soul winner for our precious Savior, Jesus Christ.
Your loving prayers for the family have been a constant encouragement and source of spiritual strength. Thus, even in this difficult time of sorrow, we’ve found hope for tomorrow and comfort in knowing that you have found fullness of joy in his presence. Psalms 16:11. You are precious and honored in God’s sight and ours too.
We thank God upon every remembrance of you. You’ll always be alive in our hearts till that glorious day we see you again. For surely we have a delightful inheritance. Psalms 16:6.

A one-hour visitation will take place before a 2 p.m. memorial service Jan. 7 at Duluth Gospel Tabernacle, 1515 W. Superior St.

Helen L. Pavlovich, 77, of Mountain Iron died peacefully Saturday, June 1, 2002, at the Delano Healthcare Center in Delano.
She was born Jan. 5, 1925, to Peter and Lena (Tawyea) Simonson in Buhl. She grew up and attended school in Buhl, graduating in 1943. She married Merrill Pavlovich on June 28, 1946, in Hermantown. Following marriage they lived in Buhl and Kinney prior to making their home in Mountain Iron in 1959. She was employed as a rural mail carrier by the Mountain Iron Post Office. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, always having a joke or story to tell them. Her bright smile and contagious laugh will always be remembered by those who loved her.
Survivors include a son, Merrill (Lynda) Pavlovich Jr., of Delano, Minn.; a daughter, Susan (David) Engmark, of Bethel, Minn.; grandchildren, Maggie (Ryan) Thomas, Michael Pavlovich, Hunter and Andrew Engmark; a sister, Margaret (Joe) Nosan, of Hibbing; brothers, Thomas (Gloria) Simonson of Cambridge, Minn., Francis (Joan) Simonson of Buhl and Peter Simonson and Charles Simonson, both of Brainerd; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merrill Sr.; two sisters, Pearl Serrano and Violet Hansen; and four brothers, Arthur, Gerald, Eugene and Leonard Simonson.
