Margaret W. Erickson
Margaret W. Erickson, 82, Duluth, died Friday, March 12, 1999 in the Lakeshore Lutheran Home. She was born June 8, 1916 to Patrick and Agatha (Cotter) Welsh in Two Harbors, where she grew up and attended schools, graduating from the Two Harbors High School in 1934. She was married to John H. Erickson and they lived in Duluth and St. Paul for several years. She returned to Duluth and was employed as a nurse at St. Luke’s Hospital and Park Point Manor until retiring in 1979. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Drew Fisher.

Margaret is survived by a son, John M. (Ruth) Erickson of Two Harbors; two daughters, Peggy (Eugene) Kubiszewski of St. Paul and Mary Susan Fisher of Edina; a sister, Winifred (Morris) Peterson of Minneapolis; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Wednesday in Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

William A. "Willie" Shoemaker
William A. “Willie” Shoemaker, 66, Two Harbors, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 11, 1999 at the Lake View Home. He was born June 21, 1932 in Ashland, Wis., and lived for most of his life on the North Shore. He had sailed on the ore boats, then worked at the former Reserve Mining Company in Silver Bay until retiring in 1975 due to poor health.

Willie is preceded in death by his parents, William C. Shoemaker and Ted and Alice (Wilhelm) Jacques; three brothers, Ted, Vernon and John Shoemaker; and a great-niece, Reanne Shoemaker.

Willie is survived by two brothers, Richard L. (Ruth) Shoemaker of Grand Rapids and Richard S. (Shirley) Shoemaker of Chicago; a sister, Pelto “Dell” Wallo of Iron Mountain, Mich.; a nephew, Steven (Lori) Shoemaker of St. Cloud; a niece, Cathleen (Filex) O’Kindo of Burnsville and several other nieces and nephews.

Services were held March 15 in the Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Grand Marais.

James C. Nelson
James Charles Nelson, 66, South Range, Wis., died Wednesday, March 10, 1999 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

He was born on May 5, 1932, in Conover, Wis., but spent most of his life in Wittenberg, Wis., Finland, Minn., and South Range. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of the VFW post in Silver Bay.

He had worked in construction most of his life and was a member of the Carpenter’s Local 361.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Sue Nelson; two sons, Dennis (Shelley) of Finland, Bradley Nelson of Oshkosh, Wis.; a daughter, Vickie Schlotthauer of Hudson; three grandchildren, Tanner, Tasia and Cory Schlotthauer; a brother, Norman (Marilyn) Nelson of Superior; and a sister, Helen (Charles) Goody of Waupaca, Wis.

Interment was Saturday in Veteran’s Memorial Park in Greenwood Cemetery.

Audrey Mae Overby
Audrey Mae Overby, 83, Silver Bay, died Tuesday, March 9, 1999, in the Minnesota Veterans Home.

She was born May 26, 1915 in Duluth to John Hagen and Hermia Krebs. Her father was a Duluth policeman, her mother and her family came from Germany. Audrey grew up in Duluth and attended schools there. She worked as a secretary for a casket company.

She met and married Andrew Overby of Finland in 1948. Andrew was a carpenter and he built their home in Finland while Audrey continued working in Duluth until their home was completed. They had no children, but shared a love for dogs, and had 17 dogs throughout their life together. Andy and Audrey moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay in 1994, where Andy lost his battle to cancer in 1996, after 48 years of marriage. She is also preceded in death by her parents and by a sister, Marjorie.

Audrey is survived by a cousin, John (Eloise) Krebs of Duluth and family.

Erling O. Lamo
Erling O. Lamo, 77, Charlotte, N.C., died unexpectedly Monday, March 1, 1999.

Lamo was born in Two Harbors and served with the US Air Force. He was a mechanic at Town & Country Ford until his retirement. He was a member of Covenant United Methodist Church and was an avid hunter, fisherman and loved woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Hazel Lamo; step-daughters, Agnes Wright of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Hazel (John) Hames, Connorsville, Ind. and Nancy Willis (Jim) Lundy, Summer-ville, S.C.; sister, Clara Hill, Leesburg, Fla.; brother, Harold Lamo, Two Harbors; 9 step-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were March 5. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant United Methodist Church, 6824 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28214.

Emma Antonia Albrant
Emma Antonia Albrant of Longville, Minn. and formerly of Two Harbors, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at her daughter’s home in Sparta, Wis.

She was born on October 12, 1923 in Crosby, Minn. to Orville and Minna (Feierabend) Mills, and was united in marriage to Harold R. Albrant on April 29, 1944, at Walker, Minn.

She is survived by her daughter Lauren (Richard) Rowe of Sparta; granddaughter Robyn Rowe of Duluth; grandson Thomas (Victoria) Rowe; and great-granddaughter Taylar Rowe of Waukesha, Wis.; four sisters, Orva (Howard) Roe of Grey Eagle, Minn., Lillian Decker of Melrose, Minn., Luceil Kivette and Nora (Lowell) Shepard of Longville; sister-in-law Fern (John) Ferguson, Duquette, Minn.; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister Bernice, and brother John.

Emma worked at the Community Health Clinic in Two Harbors from the time of its founding until her retirement in 1986. After she retired she did volunteer work at the hospital, the tourist information center in Two Harbors and was a member of the board of directors at the Two Harbors Federal Credit Union.

In 1993 she moved to Longville to be closer to her sisters, and continued her active role in the community by volunteering her time and help wherever it was needed.

A memorial service was held March 6.

Winnifrd Isabelle Elliott
Winnifred Isabelle Elliott, 89, Ypsilanti, Mich, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999. She was born January 14, 1910 in Two Harbors, the daughter of Robert Bruce and Ethel Winnifred (Jones) Elliott.

Winn was a 1933 graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minn. and was active in the community and in the churches she attended. Winn was a volunteer at the Two Harbors Public Library and a member of the Presbyterian Church of Two Harbors until she relocated to Ypsilanti in 1970 to live with her brother, D. Bruce Elliott and his wife, Erna.

In Ypsilanti, Winn was a longstanding member of the First Presbyterian Church and its choir. Winn also volunteered in the Ypsilanti Thrift Shop and Beyer Hospital Auxiliary for many years.

She is survived by her brother, D. Bruce Elliott Sr., and several nieces and nephews.

George Erickson
George Erickson, 93, Two Harbors, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in his home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors, followed by burial in Lakeview Cemetery.

A complete obituary will be included in next week’s paper.

Mary Nora Lovold
Mary Nora Lovold, 85, from the North Shore, passed on the first day of Spring, March 21, 1999 at Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth. Her warm, loving heart and wonderful smile touched many lives.

She was a 50 year member of the Order of Eastern Star, a charter member of the United Protestant Church of Silver Bay, and retired from the Lake Superior School District.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Reynold P. Lovold.

She is survived by her three children, Bruce (Judy) Lovold, Renny (Linda) Lovold and Mary (Paul) Hearns; her seven grandchildren, Bruce (Cynthia) Lovold, Michael (Karin) Lovold, Renee (Jim) Borson, Erik (Yasmin) Lovold, Carrie Tavernier, Adam Tavernier and Ian Hearns; and her four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at United Church of Two Harbors on Tuesday.

Marian C. Hedin
Marian C. Hedin, 66, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999 in Lake View Memorial Hospital. She was born August 25, 1932 in Two Harbors to George and Stella (Byce) Amesbury. She was a life-long resident of the Two Harbors area and was employed at Encampment Forest Association from 1961 to 1984, then as a dietary aide at Lake View Memorial Hospital for nine years until her retirement. In her free time she enjoyed gardening and quilting. She was a member of Lake View Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

Marian is survived by her husband, Chester T. Hedin; a daughter, Myrna Hedin of Minneapolis; a son, Robert Hedin of Minneapolis; and three brothers, Charles and Paul Amesbury, both of Two Harbors, and Don Amesbury of Minneapolis.

Services were held March 20 in Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Two Harbors. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Two Harbors.

George W. Erickson
George W. Erickson, 93, Two Harbors, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in his home.

He was born July 12, 1905, to Erick and Mary (Pearson) Erickson in Two Harbors, where he was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Two Harbors High School and attended University of Minnesota. He was employed by the city of Two Harbors, retiring as head of the electrical department in 1970 after over 35 years of service.

He was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church. At the time of death he was the oldest past worshipful master of Fortitude Lodge #188 of the Masonic Order. He was a retired member of Two Harbors Volunteer Fire Department, a member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and Lake County Historical Society and its board of directors. He was an organizer of Community Health Center in Two Harbors and served on its board. He was a member of Scandinavian Mercantile Cooperative board.

He married Hilda Lyngen of Moose Lake in 1936. She preceded him in death in 1984.

George is survived by daughters Jean (Charles) Swanson of Oswego, N.Y., and Nancy (Victor) Hansen of Noblesville, Ind.; granddaughters Gayle Swanson of Larchmont, N.Y., Pamela Swanson of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Susan Wood of McCordsville, Ind., and Karen Wilder of Indianapolis, Ind.; and great-grandchildren Charles Eric Swanson and Lauren Elizabeth Wilder.

Leroy H. "Swede" Wahlstrom
LeRoy H. “Swede” Wahlstrom

LeRoy H. “Swede” Wahlstrom, 79, Duluth and Harlingen, Texas, and formerly of Two Harbors, died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Minneapolis.

He was born in Brainerd on Oct. 5, 1919, to Gustav and Hulda (Hanson) Wahlstrom. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 125th Field Artillery. On Oct. 29, 1947, Swede married Eleanore Wachowiak in Winona, Minn., and together they began a family. Following graduation as an electrician from technical school in Kansas City, the Wahlstroms moved to numerous areas because of his career. In the mid-1950s, the Wahlstroms moved to Two Harbors, until settling in Clover Valley in 1956. There they kept busy with the family livestock farm. Swede was a journeyman electrician with Electrical Workers Union 242, where he also served as a trustee. Prior to the union split, he was a business agent with union 31.

Wahlstrom was a volunteer firefighter with Clifton Fire Department, a member of VFW Local 137, Two Harbors Moose Lodge 1463 and BPO Elks Lodge 729 and active in the local DFL party.

Since 1984, Wahlstrom and his wife spent time between Duluth and Harlingen. Swede took pride in his Swedish heritage and made a point of keeping up on the Swedish language.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Eleanore of Duluth; sons David, Steve, Thomas, Jolly and Rick; a daughter, Sue; a brother, Robert (Ellen) Wahlstrom; a sister, Dorothy “Dot” (Bruce) Hulbert; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services were March 24 in Duluth.

Robert W. Larson
Robert William Larson, 63, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., passed away Thursday, April 1, 1999 at his home after a valiant three year battle against cancer.

He was born in Two Harbors on June 10, 1935 and had made Sault Ste. Marie his home since 1958.

He retired in February 1998 after 29 years of employment at the Lake Superior State University heating plant. Previous to that he worked on the construction of the Poe Lock and for dredging companies as an underwater driller and blaster.

He had many varied interests, chief of which was downhill skiing at Searchmont, Ont., cross country skiing, golfing, fishing and boating on the St. Mary’s River, tying fishing flies, trap and target shooting and hunting. He enjoyed attending the activities of his grandchildren.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, the Chippewa County Shooting Association and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

Bob was predeceased by his father, Otto William Larson, and his mother, Mary Larson Ring, both of Two Harbors.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, whom he married on April 9, 1955; four children, Sherri (Tom) Sayer of Tomah, Wisc., Todd (Becky) of Port Huron, Mich., Julie (Dennis) Hill and Kevin (Kathy) of Sault Ste. Marie; grandchildren Jessica and Tommy Sayer, Cedar and Hillary Larson, Eric and Courtney Hill and Wesley and Christopher Larson: and mother-in-law, Elsie Delp.

David B. Aspling
David B. Aspling, 49, Two Harbors, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, in the Lake View Home. He was born February 28, 1950 in Two Harbors to Gust E. and Kathryn (Fortman) Aspling. He grew up in Two Harbors, graduated from high school, and then moved to Mankato where he graduated from Mankato State University in 1987. He returned to Two Harbors in 1994. He was a member of Living Waters Fellowship.

Dave is survived by his wife, Janet; two daughters, Lisa Templeton of Ham Lake and Carmen Aspling of Duluth; a sister, Ginger Englund of Wisconsin; and three grandchildren, Amanda, Kayla and Cody.

Services were held April 3 in Living Waters Fellowship. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
