Ella E. Stearns
Ella E. Stearns, 82, died Wednesday, March 15, at Dakota Heartland Hospital in Fargo.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, from Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes.
Rev. Dan C. Abrahams officiated at the funeral, Sharlotte Johnston was the organist and vocal music was by the Zion Lutheran Guild Singers.
Interment was at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Glenn Stearns, Ed Rotenberger, Richard Stearns, James Gilbert, Harold Triebenbach and Lee Kessler.
Ella Harjes, daughter of Herman and Pauline Buckentin Harjes, was born at Green Isle on Dec. 11, 1917.
She moved with her parents to Detroit Lakes in 1934 and was married to Roman Rennewanz on May 10, 1950.
She worked at the Lincoln Grocery, Lambert Drug, the C. B. Goss 5 & 10 Store, Fairmont Creamery and Wallgren Drug.
Mr. Rennewanz died Feb. 14, 1975, and she and Alton Stearns were married on May 11, 1984.
A member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1934, she sang in the choir, in the Guild Singers and also belonged to the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
Surviving are her husband - Alton Stearns, Detroit Lakes; two step - sons - Richard (Shirley) Stearns, Fargo, and Glenn (Adrienne) Stearns, Audubon, and a step - daughter - Audrey (Dick) Kronick, Kent, Wash. There are seven step - grandchildren, nine step - great - grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
In addition to her first husband, Mrs. Stearns also was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and three sisters.
Loretta M. Thorson
Loretta M. Thorson, 92, died Thursday, March 16, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1997.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 20, from the Berean Baptist Church in Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Timothy F. Riley officiating.
Interment will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Shell Lake Township of Becker County, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Loretta Swanson, daughter of John and Agnes Lindholm Swanson, was born July 15, 1907, in Kane, Pa.
She moved to Minnesota with her parents at the age of two and settled at Sebeka, where she attended rural school near Sebeka and then attended the Pokegama Nurse’s Training School in Pine City.
She worked in various hospitals and sanatariums in both Wisconsin and Minnesota and - on April 2, 1945 - was married to Albert Thorson in Milwaukee, Wis.
They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1946 and Mrs. Thorson did home care for various people over the years.
She was a member of the Berean Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son - Nels (Orlene), Detroit Lakes; three sisters - Clarissa Swanson and Ethel Swanson, both Minneapolis, and Irene (David) Berg, Sun City West, Ariz., and a brother - Oliver Swanson, Minneapolis. There are three grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband (who died March 6, 1971), a daughter (Natalie Lynn, who died in infancy), her parents and eight brothers and sisters.
Visitation: Sunday, March 19, 4 - 8 p.m., West - Kjos Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to funeral on Monday at the church.
Thomas John
Thomas John, who also was known as “Jack the Mayor” Potter, died Saturday, March 18, at St Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. He was 84.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, from St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in White Earth.
Fr. Jerry Rogers officiated at the funeral and music was by William Hanks, Kandi McGregor and the Ojibway Singers.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in White Earth, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were James Krause, Michael Weets, Evan Potter, William Potter, Thomas Rogers and Matthew Rogers.
The honorary pallbearers included Jo Marie Potter, Shelly Potter, Kelly Potter, Lenore Potter, Margo Rogers and Tina Rhein.
Thomas John Potter, son of Joseph and Sarah Mason Potter, was born May 15, 1915, in White Earth, where he was a lifelong resident.
He attended the White Earth Government School, worked as a woodsman and also served as a seasonal helper on area farms.
A member of the Ojibway Singers, he carried the elder’s staff for the White Earth Nation.
Surviving are a sister - Anastasia Blue, Detroit Lakes, and two brothers - Charles, White Earth, and Louis, Detroit Lakes. Also surviving are a godchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Doris Gahlon Malm
Doris Gahlon Malm, 83, the widow of the Rev. Ervin C. Malm and a former Detroit Lakes resident, died Friday, Feb. 25, in Indianapolis, Ind.
Mrs. Malm once taught in the Detroit Lakes schools and her husband served as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church from 1963 - 68. Rev. Malm died last August.
Doris Gahlon, daughter of Emil and Betsy Gahlon, was born Aug. 1, 1916, at Nelson. She graduated from Alexandria High School and from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., and was married to Rev. Malm in 1941.
Rev. Malm served congregations at Warroad, Hallock, Detroit Lakes and Alexandria in Minnesota, as well as at Lindsborg, Kan.; Littleton, Colo., and Spokane, Wash.
Within the congregations served by Rev. Malm, Mrs. Malm developed choral programs and led a life of teaching music to youth and adults.
After the Malms moved to Alexandria in 1968, she served as choir director at Osakis High School and served a term as president of the Minnesota chapter of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Her Osakis choir represented Minnesota at the World’s Fair and she was a member and served on the governing board of Lutheran Church Women prior to retirement.
Surviving are a brother - Warren Gahlon, White Bear Lake; a daughter - Rebecca (Steven) Silbaugh, Indianapolis, Ind., and a son - James Malm, Apple Valley. There are two grandchildren.
Memorials: Preferred to Robin Run Health Center, 5354 West 62nd St., Indianapolis, Ind., 46268, where Rev. and Mrs. Malm lived for several years prior to their death.
Lucille G. Jasken
Rites will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, from St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Waubun for Lucille G. Jasken.
Mrs. Jasken, 84, the widow of Ambrose Jasken, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Sunday, March 19.
Fr. Ron Meyer, O. M. I., will officiate at the funeral, Kristin Jasken will be the organist and special music will be by Edie and John Mattson.
Interment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery, with the Mattson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Jerome Flottemesch, Richard Flottemesch, Gary Jasken, Richard Jasken, Gerald Kunz and Martin Kunz.
Lucille Kunz, daughter of Martin and Agnes Kahnke Kunz, was born at Callaway on June 27, 1915, graduated from Waubun High School (Class of 1933), earned an associate degree and intermediate rural degree at Moorhead State Teacher’s College in 1937 and taught in various rural districts in the Ogema area.
On April 15, 1941, she and Ambrose Jasken were married at Callaway and lived on the Jasken family farm near Ogema.
They farmed together until the mid - 1970’s, Lucille later helped her husband with honey preparation and processing and - in October, 1996 - the Jaskens moved into Waubun and lived with their daughter Barbara.
While on the farm, Mrs. Jasken belonged to St. Benedict’s Catholic Church at White Earth and its Christian Mothers Society and she belonged to St. Ann’s Catholic Church after moving into Waubun. She also was a member of homemakers clubs in the White Earth and Ogema areas.
Surviving are two daughters - Barbara Jasken, Waubun, and Eloise Jasken, Bloomington; three brothers - Desmond (Norma) Kunz, Ogema; Damian Kunz, Renton, Wash., and Richard (Lois) Kunz, Callaway, and a sister - Dolores Dorff, Detrot Lakes.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Jasken also was preceded in death by her parents and a sister (Marie Flottemesch).
Visitation: Wednesday, March 22, 4:30 - 6:30 p.m., Mattson Funeral Chapel in Mahnomen and also one hour before funeral on Thursday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church.
Bertha Schroeder
Bertha Schroeder, 97, a lifelong resident of the Becker County area, died Monday, March 20, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1997.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, from Zion Lutheran Church.
Rev. Dan C. Abrahams will officiate at the funeral, Betty Kohler will be the organist and the soloist will be Corrine Frank.
Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, with the West - Kjos Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers will be Lyle Moe, Donald Moe, Willis Froysland, Amer Froysland, Floyd Johnson and Jim Mercer.
Bertha Arneson, daughter of Arne and Clara Hegg Arneson, was born Sept. 7, 1902, in Lake Eunice Township of Becker County (rural Audubon).
She attended Rural School District No. 78, attended the Detroit Lakes Business College and later worked at Pettibone Lodge in Shoreham.
Bertha Arneson and George Schroeder were married at Detroit Lakes on Oct. 11, 1936, and lived in Detroit Lakes.
Surviving are a son - Donald (Rose), Procter; a daughter - Vi (Ken) Christensen, Detroit Lakes, and a sister - Mildred Brekke, Monroe, Wis. There are five grandchildren, 14 great - grandchildren and 14 great - great - grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs. Schroeder in death were her husband (who died Feb. 22, 1960), her parents, a son (Everett “Bud” Mercer), a granddaughter, six sisters and seven brothers.
Visitation: Wednesday, March 22, 4 - 7 p.m., West - Kjos Funeral Home and one hour prior to funeral Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church.
Emma Mae Johnson
Emma Mae Johnson, 94, who was once honored as Minnesota Foster Parent of the Year, died at St. Mary’s Nursing Home on Tuesday, March 21.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, from St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in White Earth, with Fr. Mietek Bajek officiating.
Serving as the honorary pallbearers will be Gary Thunder, Robin Stately, Maurice Stately, Guy Stately, Robin John Roy, Tyrone Thunder, Bruce Stately, Leo Robert Holstein and Jacob Rosado.
The David - Donehower Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
Emma Mae Holstein, daughter of Ben and Caroline Beaupre Holstein, was born at White Earth on Sept. 8, 1905.
She and John Johnson were married and were foster parents to more than 140 children over the years.
Mrs. Johnon, who was named Minnesota Foster Parent of the Year in 1992, was politically active during the campaigns for Hubert H. Humphrey and was invited to his inauguration.
Surviving are a daughter - Vivian Thunder Stately, Red Lake, along with two nieces and five generations of grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband, two sons (Edward and David), two brothers (Benedict and Robert) and a sister (Marian).
Visitation: Thursday, March 23, two hours prior to funeral starting at 9 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church.
