Archie Walstrom
April 4, 1919–Oct. 30, 2000
Services were at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, from the Highland Grove Lutheran Church at rural Hitterdal for Archie Walstrom.
Mr. Walstrom, 81, died Monday, Oct. 30, at the Sunnyside Nursing Home east of Lake Park, where he had been a resident since 1998.
Rev. David Hurtt officiated at the funeral, LaDon Haugen was the organist and the vocalist was Audrey Elton.
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the Vigen - Wright Funeral Home of Hawley in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Blaine Walstrom, Jeremy Walstrom, Lucas Walstrom, Swen Walstrom, Travis Walstrom and Tyler Walstrom.
Archie Walstrom, son of Olaf and Lillian Duffney Walstrom, was born April 4, 1919, in Holmesville Township of Becker County (near Detroit Lakes) and grew up and attended rural schools near Detroit Lakes and Hitterdal.
On May 22, 1941, Mr. Walstrom and Venda Radeck were married in Hawley.
During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army and saw extensive action in Europe. He was involved in the invasion of Normandy, was wounded twice and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal.
Upon his discharge from the armed forces, he farmed in the Hitterdal - Cormorant - Audubon area and then was employed as a custodian with the Detroit Lakes Public Schools from 1954 - 69. He then was a custodian with the Ulen - Hitterdal Public Schools until retiring in 1981.
Surviving are four sons–Mark (DeNett), David (Marilyn) and Jeffrey (Tamie), all of Hawley, and Dennis (Pat), Moorhead; two daughters–Lois Stabnow, Hawley, and Ruth (Bruce) Halvorson, Hitterdal; a brother–Richard Hanson, Escanaba, Mich., and a sister–Gladys Koenig, Blaine. There are 14 grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Walstrom in death were his wife (who died Dec. 7, 1985), his parents and two brothers.
Barbara Ann Kent
Feb. 22, 1950–Oct. 30, 2000
Barbara Ann Kent, 50, died at her home in West Fargo on Monday, Oct. 30.
The funeral was at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, from Faith Lutheran Church.
Interment was at the Page (N. D.) Cemetery, with the West Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Barbara Ann Brogren was born at Detroit Lakes on Feb. 22, 1950, grew up at Ulen, graduated from Ulen High School and earned an associate degree in computer science at the Brainerd Technical College.
She moved to Fargo and took employment with the Dakota Paper Co. in 1969.
On June 12, 1971, she and Steve Kent were married at rural Ulen and lived at West Fargo following their marriage.
She became a full - time mother when their first child was born and then began serving as a para - professional at West Fargo High School in 1992.
A member of Faith Lutheran Church, she served on the women’s board, was a volunteer in the office and also was involved in Sunday School, confirmation and ushering.
She enjoyed crafts, fishing, reading, going for walks and flowers.
Surviving are her husband–Steve; two sons–Scott (Amy), Wahpeton, and Jeff, Long Prairie; her parents–Kenneth and Bernice Brogren, Ulen; a brother–Kenneth (Carolyn), Myrtle Creek, Ore., and four sisters–Janice (Ross) Hardesty, Brainerd; Lynette Hellum, Anoka, and Valerie (Randy) Alland and Carol (Jonn) Rikhus, both Hawley. There is one grand - daughter and a number of nieces and nephews.
Dorine L. Leslie
July 23, 1943–Oct. 31, 2000
There was a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beaulieu for Dorine L. Leslie
Mrs. Leslie, 57, died at her home in Mahnomen on Tuesday, Oct. 31.
Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, with the David - Donehower Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Dorine Lucille Kaster, daughter of Bernard A. and Martha Tschida Kaster, was born at Detroit Lakes on July 23, 1943.
She attended the Ahmann Country School, graduated from Mahnomen High School (Class of 1962) and then worked as a baby - sitter and did housework for Harvey and Shirley Welle, Bob and Kay McNamee and Virgil and Delores McNamee.
Later, she worked in the credit department of the W. T. Grant Co. in Minneapolis and then for Edna Schwarzrock at Edna’s Fairway Foods in Mahnomen.
On Aug. 21, 1965, she and Robert H. Leslie were married in Beaulieu.
The Leslies lived in Mahnomen for a time following their marriage, then moved to Wisconsin and lived a short time and–in 1973–returned to Mahnomen.
Mrs. Leslie was employed at several jobs in Mahnomen.
A member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Christian Mothers, she was a lifelong member of the church choir. She also belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary No. 1226 in Bejou, to American Legion Auxiliary No. 31 in Mahnomen and enjoyed deer hunting.
Surviving are her husband–Robert “Bob” Leslie, Mahnomen; her mother–Martha Kaster, Mahnomen; a daughter–Brenda (Doug) Schoenborn, Mahnomen; two sons–Brian Leslie, Mahnomen, and Bert Leslie, Ada; a sister–Audrey Stenehjem, Blaine, and seven brothers–Bernard Jr. and Michael, both Erskine; Donald (Nancy), Bloomington; Raymond (Eileen), Rindal; Kenneth and Eugene, both Mahnomen, and Richard (Greta), Blaine. There are two grandchildren.
Preceding Mrs.Leslie in death were her father, a son (John Joseph) and a sister (Marilyn Kaster).
Leroy Schur
May 16, 1926–Jan. 1, 2001
Leroy Schur, 74, a Detroit Lakes resident since 1991, died Monday, Jan. 1, in Mesa, Ariz.
The funeral was at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, from Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo.
Interment was at the Arthur, N. D., Cemetery, with the West Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Leroy Schur was born at Arthur, N. D., on May 16, 1926, grew up and attended school there and then served with the U. S. Navy during World War II.
Upon completing military service, he attended Jamestown College, worked for the Black Sign Co. in Grand Forks, N. D., and then moved to Fargo and was employed by the Cook Sign Co.
Mr. Schur joined the Fargo Fire Department in 1954 and worked as a firefighter until retiring in 1982 with 28 years of service.
On Nov. 20, 1954, he and Phyllis M. Rilling were married in Fargo.
They moved to Detroit Lakes in 1991 and spent the winter months in Mesa.
Surviving are his wife–Phyllis; a son–Darian, Detroit Lakes; three daughters–Darcy (Scott) Hedstrom, Palmdale, Calif.; Gail (Alan) King, West Fargo, and Jaqueline Gudmundson, Misquite, Tex., and two sisters–Frances Sheldon and Muriel (Edwin) Rieniets, both of Fargo. There are six grandchildren and one step - grandson.
Eino Walter Mursu
Sept. 21, 1915–Jan. 2, 2001
Services were at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 6, from Christ Lutheran Church in Wolf Lake for Eino Walter Mursu, Detroit Lakes.
Mr. Mursu, 85, died at St. Mary’s Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, Jan. 2.
Rev. Arthur Ohlwine officiated at the funeral and Shirley Anderson was the organist.
Interment was at the Spruce Grove Union Cemetery in Spruce Grove Township, with the Cardini - Behrens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Rueben Hanson, Eldor Huwe, Roger Boyce, Kenneth Koskela, Arnold Huwe and Ross Mickelson.
Military rites were by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8165 of Wolf Lake.
Eino Walter Mursu, son of Henry and Anna Makela Mursu, was born Sept. 21, 1915, in Becker County.
He was raised and attended school in Becker County and then worked as a miner in Montana.
On Jan. 5, 1943, Mr. Mursu and June Baumgart were married.
He served with the U. S. Army and, upon receiving his discharge, farmed in the Wolf Lake area until retiring.
Mr. Mursu was a member of Christ Lutheran Church.
Surviving are his wife–June, Detroit Lakes; two daughters–Shelly (Kurtis) Janu, Detroit Lakes, and Stacy Strehlow, Frazee, and a brother–Armas (Sadie), Paramount, Calif. There are two grandchildren.
Preceding Mr. Mursu in death were his parents, a son (Darius) and eight brothers and sisters.
Olive Spiekermeier.
March 13, 1913–Dec. 31, 2000
Rites were at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3, from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sheldon, N. D., for Olive Spiekermeier.
Mrs. Spiekermeier, 87, a resident of Enderlin, N. D., died Sunday, Dec. 31, at the Lisbon Medical Center.
Fr. James McKinney officiated at the funeral
Interment was at the church Cemetery, with the West Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Serving as the pallbearers were Jacob Wavra, Joseph Wavra, Jeremy Utke, Bradley Utke, Michael Spiekermeier and Larry Kellerman.
The honorary pallbearers included Jan Schmidt, Jill Arens, Julie Wavra, Jackie Eldridge, Kristina Stoneking and Jody Spiekermeier.
Olive Newton was born March 13, 1913, in Sheldon, N. D., grew up there and graduated from Sheldon High School (Class of 1931).
She attended Valley City (N. D.) Teachers College and then taught at Highland District No. 47 near Sheldon, at the Casey School and then one year at the Rogers (N. D.) School.
Olive Newton and Frank Spiekermeier were married at Sheldon in June, 1938, and farmed there for many years.
Mr. Spiekermeier died Dec. 1, 1980, she moved into Enderlin the following year and then moved to Hillcrest Manor in November, 1999.
A charter member of the Highland Homemakers and a club member for 65 years, she was an honorary member of the St. Mary’s Altar Society and belonged to the Enderlin Senior Citizens. She taught piano and also was the church organist for 38 years.
Surviving are a son - Mike (Sharon) Spiekermeier, Enderlin; two daughters - Connie (Don) Wavra, Detroit Lakes, and Carolyn (David) Utke, Enderlin; two brothers–Erwin "Mike" (Lillian) Newton, Crystal, and Wilmer "Murph" (Gladys) Newton, Robbinsdale, and a sister - Hazel Peterson, Edmonds, Wash. There are 11 grandchildren and eight great - grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she also was preceded in death by a brother (Elmer) and a sister and brother - in - law (Florence and Paul Gress).
