Dorothy “Dot” Schabert Mason
Dorothy “Dot” Schabert Mason, who was born in Proctor, died Fri., Apr. 14, 2000.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald, her parents, two sisters and a brother.
Dorothy is survived by her children Sandy (Tom) Becker, Midge (Bob) Anderson, Carol (Wayne) Tahtinen, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren, a special nephew Howard Cress and other family and friends.
We will carry you in our hearts forever, we love you mom.
A memorial service was held in Minneapolis.
Alice Lorraine Kliewer
Phyllis Tyler of Twig is mourning the death of her mother, Alice Lorraine Kliewer. The Duluth resident died Sat., Apr. 15, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 75.
She was born in Libby Township, Aitkin County, Minn., where she grew up and attended school. She was a Duluth resident for most of her life. Alice worked in the histology laboratory at St. Mary’s Medical Center for 36 years. After retiring in 1986, she continued to volunteer at St. Mary’s.
Alice is also survived by two sons, three brothers, two sisters, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Caroline Deloris Lemasters
Services were held earlier in the week for Caroline Deloris Lemasters. She died Fri., April 21, 2000 in a Duluth hospital following a short illness with cancer. She was 69.
She was born in Proctor on Dec. 20, 1930 to Sigurd and Mabel Cecile (Anderson) Okstad and was a 1948 graduate of Proctor High School. She lived in Calif. from 1950 until returning to Proctor in 1971. She had worked as office manager for East-West Realty, Bowman Realtors and Conradi Realty, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Hermantown Community Church and a past member of the Proctor Moose 1302.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, two brothers and her husband Lee Secmon Lemasters on June 5, 1984.
Survivors include her son Gary of Proctor, one brother Clayton (Ruby) Okstad, Aurora, Minn., four grandchildren Kyle, Jeremy, Angela, all of Proctor and Joe of Merril, Wis.
Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Herman-town.
Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Ambrose “Bruce” Zywicki and Louise Ann Zywicki
Ambrose “Bruce” Zywicki, 82, died Wed., Apr. 19, 2000 in a Duluth hospital a month after his wife Louise Ann Zywicki, 79, died in their Morris Thomas Rd. home.
He was born in Willow River and attended their schools and the Dunwoody School in Minneapolis. She was born in Duluth and was a former Alborn resident. They were married in 1939 and had lived in Hermantown for the past 41 years.
They were both members of the Salvation Army. She was Senior Soldier of the Salvation Army, secretary of its League of Mercy, vice president of its Home League, a Prayer Warrior and a longtime Sunday School teacher. He retired from St. Scholastica where he was a custodial engineer for many years. They farmed and both loved to fish.
They are survived by children Robert (Cindy) of Hermantown, Lawrence (Judy) of Saginaw, James (Darlyne) of Twig, Carol (Richard) Allan of Cloquet, Laura (Larry) Gower of Alborn, Diane (Dennis) Tesser of Hermantown and Duane (fiancee Kristy Allen) of Hermantown; his sisters Blanche (Bob) Vanneste of Proctor, Louise Balut of Moose Lake, Evelyn (Glen) Weiher of Edina and Florence (Jack) Jesberg of New Prague, Minn.; her sister Delores Ladzinski of Duluth; his brothers Don (Judy) of Prior Lake and Earnest (Lou) of Wrenshall; her brothers Ed (Lois) Moe of Hermantown, Ralph Moe and Lester (Hazel) Moe, both of Duluth; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and devoted dogs Tiffany and Precious.
Burial was in Hermantown Cemetery. Memorials to Salvation Army would be appreciated. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Sister Carmel (Eleanor) Cashin
Sister Carmel (Eleanor) Cashin, OSB, who was born in Proctor and attended elementary school here, died Tues., Apr. 25, 2000 in the St. Scholastica Monastery. She was 86.
She entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1931 and professed monastic vows in 1932. Sister Carmel attended elementary school in Proctor and received her secondary education at Villa Scholastica High School in Duluth. She earned her B.S. degree in medical technology from the College of St. Scholastica and her M.S. with specialization in bacteriology from the Institutum Divi Thomae in Cincinnati.
She was an elementary teacher at St. Thomas School, International Falls and St. Francis School in Brainerd, and served at St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth; St. Joseph’s Medical Center, Brainerd; Hibbing General Hospital, Hibbing; and St. Mary’s Hospital, Kewaunee, Wis., as a medical technologist.
In 1973, health problems caused her semi-retirement. In 1976 until her full retirement in 1986, she returned to the monastery as an assistant chemistry laboratory instructor at St. Scholastica.
Sister Carmel is survived by the sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery, her sister Amy (Wescott) Trainor of Chicago, her brother Gregory Cashin of Australia, and other relatives.
Burial was in Gethsemane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Scholastica Monastery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Gene Marie Cuff Carlson
Gene Marie Cuff Carlson died Sun., Apr. 30, 2000 in Viewcrest Nursing Home. Gene was born in LaPointe, Madeline Island, Wis. and was a long time area resident. She was 74. Gene and her husband Charles A. “Chuck”, who died in 1991, were owner-operator of Airport Fleetline Taxi for 45 years.
The Stebner Road resident was a 30-year member of Gethsemane Covenant Church, volunteer for 30 plus years at the Salvation Army, 30 plus years at the Depot, 33 years as secretary/treasurer of the Proctor Race Track, 30-year member of Hermantown Garden Club, 30-year member of Madeline Island Historical and 20 plus year member of Skyline Bowling League.
Gene was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Helen Cuff, infant son Paul and brother Tom Cuff.
Surviving are sons David R. of Duluth, Mark R. (Jackie) of Hermantown, Charles A. (Irene) of Wright, Minn. and Robert A. of Mpls., daughters Connie (Jim) Humphrey of Seattle, Wash., Barbara (Pat) Cadigan and Susan (Ken) Smith of Duluth and Laura (Bob) Goewey of Saginaw, brother Henry Cuff of Monticello, Wis. and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. today, Thurs., in Gethsemane Covenant Church in Hermantown. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery.
Anna Zwaduk Del Zotto
Evelyn Jacobson is in bereavement following the death of her stepsister, Anna Zwaduk Del Zotto. She died Thurs., Apr. 13, 2000 in her Gary-New Duluth home. She was 85.
Anna was born in 1914 in Brooklyn Village Common, Minn. She resided in Duluth most of her life. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and gardening.
Anna was a member of AARP, a Women’s Sewing Club and the Golden Arrow Club.
She is also survived by a stepbrother, one other stepsister and many nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.
Russell L. Trush
Russell L. Trush, who owned and operated Saginaw Construction, Inc. before he retired in 1998, died Fri., May 5, 2000 while fishing with friends in Canada. He was 54.
He was born in Beloit, Wis. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1967. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a naval officer engineer.
Russell was affiliated with Caterpillar in Peoria, Ill., Nagle-Hart in Madison and Ziegler, Sweeney Brothers and Glacier Paving in Duluth. From 1988 until his retirement in 1998, he owned and operated Saginaw Construction, Inc. He attended St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and was a member of Nichols Lake Association Board and the Elks Club.
Survivors include his wife of 32 years Jeanne, daughters Kelly (Ben) Nash of Richmond, Va. and Heidi Trush of Fayetteville, N.C.; a son Justin of Duluth and his extended family in Clinton, Wis.
Burial was in Northland Cemetery, Canyon.
Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Lillian A. Kenville
Lillian A. Kenville, who was born in Proctor, died Wed., May 3, 2000 in a Duluth hospital. She was 89.
Mrs. Kenville was a homemaker and a member of Cathedral of Christ the King and the Superior-Douglas County Senior Center.
Surviving are three sons Aldemar (Caroline) of Fargo, N.D. and Mark and Jarred (Pat), both of Superior; eight daughters Kathleen Hill, Carole (Jim) Sigfrids and Marcia Hawkins, all of Superior, Claudine Grund of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Claudia Kenville of Milwaukee, Annette (George) Brunswick of Iron River, Mich., Joy (Robert) Meehan of Upper Arlington, Ohio and Gloria (Dave) West of Superior; a brother George Laberdie of Superior; three sisters Marie Kronlund of Garden Valley, Calif., Catherine McKenzie of Sacramento, Calif. and Edna (John) Kurtz of Superior; 32 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren.
Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
