Clara Espeseth
WINGER, Minn. -- Clara B. Espeseth, 98, Winger, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, Minn.
Clara Bakken was born Oct. 27, 1901, the daughter of Halvor and Mary (Odden) Bakken, in Manvel, N.D. She moved with her family to Grand Forks. In 1912, they moved to McIntosh, Minn., where she graduated from high school in 1919. She attended normal school training in McIntosh. She taught near McIntosh and Winger. She married
Albert Espeseth on July 16, 1921, in Crookston. He died in 1962.
She is survived by sons, Arnold (Joyann) and Kenneth (Florence), both of Winger; a daughter, Carol (Orville) Messelt, Winger; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a stepson, Orville; and a brother, Henry.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Calvary Lutheran Church, Winger.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Mattson Funeral Home, Winger, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Winger City cemetery.
Richard Kintner
BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Richard Kintner, 69, Baudette, died Friday, July 7, 2000, in Lakewood Health Center, Baudette.
Richard Donald Kintner was born Sept. 16, 1930, the son of Stuart and Ellen (Barr) Kintner, in Des Moines, Iowa, where he graduated from high school in 1948. He attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953. He attended Drake University, Des Moines. He married
Grace Carlstedt on April 10, 1954, in Sandstone, Minn. In 1955, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He worked in the accounting department at Northwestern Bell Telephone. In 1963, he began the Bavarian Haus restaurant in Des Moines and operated it until 1978. In 1984, he bought the Mr. K restaurant, Ankey, Iowa. He later added an EconoLodge Motel to the restaurant and operated both until his retirement in 1991. In 1992, they moved to Rainy River, Lake of the Woods County, Minn.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Karen Kintner, Johnston Island; a brother, Jack (Lenyce), Golden, Colo.; and a sister, Shirley (Robert) Shirley, El Dora, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First Lutheran Church, Baudette.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Wabanica Lutheran cemetery.
Military rites: Baudette American Legion V.F.W. Ceremonial Team (Helgeson, Baudette).
Debra Staehnke
BAGLEY, Minn. -- Debra J. Staehnke, 46, Minnetonka, Minn., formerly of Bagley, died Saturday, July 8, 2000, in her sister's home, Bagley.
Debra Staehnke was born July 23, 1953, the daughter of Lyle and Nancy (Christenson) Staehnke, in Bagley, where she graduated from high school in 1971. She attended UND and studied criminal justice. She married
Allen Netland in 1974 in Bagley. They moved to Washburn, N.D., in 1977. She attended Bismarck State College and worked for Burleigh County Sheriff's Department. She moved to Bismarck in 1980, where she co-owned a Medical Collections Agency. She moved to Minneapolis and worked as a Financial Planner for IDS American Express Financial Services, for Dayton/Hudson Corporation, as a Personal Consultant, and for Lowry Hill Investments, as a Financial consultant.
She is survived by a daughter, Chastine Netland, Minnetonka; sisters, Margie (Chuck) Galli, Bagley, and Pam (Mic) McCrory, Bemidji; brothers, Scott, Bagley, and Wade (Sandra), Pinewood, Minn.; and a grandmother, Edythe Staehnke, Bagley.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Vickie Staehnke; and grandparents, Ed Staehnke and Melvin and Eva Christenson.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, and one hour before services, both in the funeral home.
Burial: Bagley City cemetery.
Russell McFarlane
ROSEAU, Minn. -- Russell V. McFarlane, 72, Roseau, died Sunday, July 9, 2000.
Russell Vincent McFarlane was born Jan. 27, 1928, the son of Neil and Maggie (Marsh) McFarlane, in Huss Township, Roseau County, Minn. He went to Montana and worked on several farms. He was in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He married
Barbara Svir on Aug. 6, 1954, in Badger, Minn. They moved to Seattle. He worked for Boeing AirCraft Co. They moved to Edinburg, N.D., where he owned a drayline business. They moved to Strathcona and Wannaska, Minn. He worked for Polaris and retired in 1975.
He is survived by his wife, Roseau; children, Kirby (Shelly), Thief River Falls, Leann (Cal) Brownlee, Tucson, Ariz., Tamara (Jay) Noel, Eden Prairie, Minn., and Stuart (Beth), Roseau; eight grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a sister, Florence Revell, Auburn, Wash.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregg; brothers, Lester, Clarence, Arden, and Lloyd; a sister, Madeline; and two infant sisters.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Messiah Lutheran Church, Roseau.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. devotional service, Helgeson Funeral Chapel, Roseau.
Burial: Barnett National cemetery, Badger.
Howard Kiecker
McINTOSH, Minn. -- Howard Kiecker, 91, McIntosh, died Sunday, July 9, 2000, at home.
Howard Immanuel Kiecker was born March 9, 1909, the son of Emil and Gertrude (Loeffelmacher) Kiecker, in Fairfax, Minn. He married
Cora Vraa on Nov. 28, 1934. He farmed on the family farm.
He is survived by his wife; sons, Marlin (Betty), Plymouth, Minn., and Lauris "Bud" (Clellie), McIntosh; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marcille Henscke, McIntosh.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Evelyn, Irene and Sylvia; and brothers, Lawrence, Lloyd and Orlyn.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Thursday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, McIntosh.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with an 8 p.m. prayer service, McIntosh Community Centennial Center.
Burial: Immanuel Lutheran cemetery, McIntosh (Carlin-Hoialmen, McIntosh).
Woodrow Almquist
ST. HILAIRE, Minn. -- Woodrow "Woodie" Almquist, 81, St. Hilaire, died July 9, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident that happened on June 26, 2000.
Woodrow Jens Almquist was born Oct. 28, 1918, the son of Jens and Signe (Brink) Almquist, in Black River Township, Pennington County, Minn. He graduated from high school in St. Hilaire, in 1936. He farmed on the family farm until he retired in 1986, and he drove school bus. He married
Verda Eckstein on Oct. 6, 1949, in Red Lake Falls, Minn. They lived in Black River Township. Verda Almquist died June 26, 2000.
He is survived by daughters, Peggy (Dennis) Horner, Inkster, N.D., and Julie Treffry, Moorhead; sons, Gary (Nicki), Fargo, and Rob (Mary), St. Hilaire; 10 grandchildren; brothers, Alton, Davis, Calif., and Basil (Senora), Cummings, N.D.; and sisters, Laura Durban, Pocatello, Idaho, Ollie (Ray) Durban, Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Shirley (Norman) Basse, Thief River Falls.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Edna Carlson and Vera Fehr; three brothers-in-law; and a sister-in-law.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Green Funeral Home, Thief River Falls, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Community cemetery, River Falls Township, Pennington County, Minn.
