Survived by husband, Don; sons, Kyle, Erik (Amy); grandchildren, Jacob, Karissa; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial service at 1PM on Monday, December 28, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church, 566 4th St. NW, Elk River, with a celebration to follow at Elk River American Legion.

Johnstad, Harvey James

Age 93 of Minneapolis. Minneapolis Athlete, died on December 17, 2015 after a short illness. Harvey played semi-pro basketball and baseball. He loved long blade ice skating, roller skating, and especially Ballroom dancing. He served in the CCC in northern Minnesota and in WWII as a tank gunner in Europe. Harvey enjoyed nature and the outdoors, canoeing, camping, and hiking. He had a joke for every occasion! He is survived by Martha Wren, his partner of 49 years. Interment at Fort Snelling at a later date.

Age 66 of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on December 17 at the VA Hospital in Minneapolis of leukemia. preceded in death by grandson, Joshua. Survived by devoted wife of 40 years, Judy; children, Dawn Bates, Jennifer (Robert) Barnes, and Andrew; grandchildren, Samantha, Dylan, Derek, Lillian, James Jr., Kane, Kadence; and his dog, Jada. Al was stationed in Korea during Vietnam. He was a US Army Military Sergeant, and after being honorably discharged, served 20 years on the Golden Valley Fire Department. He was a good man who demonstrated devotion, discipline, bravery, love and much selflessness. He will be terribly missed and always remembered. Committal Service 11 am, assembly lane #3, Wednesday, December 23 at Fort Snelling National cemetery, 7601 34th Ave S., Minneapolis. Reception to follow at Osseo American Legion, 260 4th Ave SE, Osseo. (Published in the Star Tribuneon December 20, 2015)

Graves Jr., Clarence Joseph

Clarence Joseph Graves, Jr. passed from the arms of his family into the arms of his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 13, 2015, in Blaine, Minnesota at the age of 91. A Celebration in honor of his life will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 4101 Washington Street NE, Columbia Heights, Minnesota on Monday, December 21, 2015, with a visitation at 10:00 AM, service at 11:00 AM, and lunch following. Clarence was born November 13, 1924 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Clarence and Gladys (Berg) Graves. He graduated from Columbia Heights High School and served his country as a Navigator and Second Lieutenant in the Army of the United States Air Corp. He was also a trained pilot and flying was his passion. After serving his country, Clarence continued on to receive a Bachelor’s Degree in Business from the University of Minnesota. He and his brother Eugene owned and successfully ran Graves Interiors for over 26 years. Clarence met his beloved wife Muriel when folk dancing in 1953 and then taught her how to play golf. They were married for 52 incredible years. They both loved the Lord and were always active within the church. Clarence loved evangelizing and sharing about the Lord. He was an elder, Bible teacher, and lover of the Word. Clarence and Muriel loved any kind of dancing, camping, playing cards, games, and watching movies with their children. They were heartbroken when their dear 22 year old son, Jeff, died unexpectedly in a tragic climbing accident on El Capitan in Yosemite, but they knew they would see him again in eternity. Clarence had a tremendously kind spirit and deep love for his family. He was a devoted husband, dad, and grandpa. He was optimistic, upbeat, and always acting silly and making people laugh. He loved those around him and it showed in his character. He will always be remembered as a man with unfailing patience, unconditional love, unlimited kindness, and a beautiful smile. His gentle and thoughtful spirit brightened so many lives and these will be memories that we will forever cherish and hold close to our hearts. Clarence always had a sparkle in his eye and will be deeply missed by his loving daughter, Leslie (Graves) Dufault; grandchildren, Pamela (Douglas) Nelson, Tony Dufault, Samantha (David) Kurien, and Jacob Dufault; great-grandchildren, Kaila, Ryan, and Hannah Kurien and Lucas Nelson; brother, Eugene (Jeannette) Graves; sister, Shirley Sagedal; and nieces and nephews.
Clarence is preceded in death by his precious wife, Muriel; beloved son, Jeffrey Joseph; dearest son-in-law, Allen Dufault; father, Clarence Graves, Sr.; mother, Gladys Graves; sisters, June Skogquist and Judith Hammerstad. On behalf of Clarence’s family we would like to especially thank North Memorial Hospice, Carmel Sheridan, and the caregivers at Edgewood Senior Living for their support, love, and gentle kindness. Any memorial donations may be made in Clarence’s name to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights, Minnesota or to Lutheran World Relief.

O'Connell, Jeanne Mary (nee Carlstrom)

Age 93 of St. Paul. Died gracefully December 12, 2015. Born July 4, 1922 in Superior, WI. Jeanne grew up in Patzau, WI and Sault Ste Marie, MI, where she worked at a medical clinic. She married John O'Connell in 1942 and moved to Kapuskasing, Ontario, where John was stationed during WWII. They settled in St. Paul, raised 6 children and remained married for 55 years. Jeanne enjoyed working at Frank Murphy, Holly House Chiropractic and A. Johnson & Sons Florist. She retired at age 80. She loved sunshine, flowers, birds, her yard, bowling, baking and knitting. She cherished her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and granddogs. You never left Jeanne's house without a pack of Doublemint gum, a plate of homemade cupcakes or a hand-knit hat. Jeanne lived at Lyngblomsten Care Center for the last 2 years of her life, aging with acceptance, grace and dignity. She maintained an individual style and elegance throughout her life. preceded in death by parents Myrtle and Siam Carlstrom; husband John O'Connell Jr.; brother Ward Carlstrom; grandson Peter Fearing; and son-in-law Brien Link. Survived by children Maureen Hernandez (John), John O'Connell III (Susan), Marcia Morley (James), Monica Krebsbach (Tom), Milissa Link, Megan O'Connell; 15 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren. Memorial Service Saturday, January 30, 2016, 2 pm at Lyngblomsten Care Center. Memorials preferred to Lyngblomsten.

Ray is survived by his wife Kathy; children Jean, Shawn, Jeff, Melanie and Brenda; 12 brothers and sisters, 12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Services will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, Dec. 19 at Christ Lutheran Church on Capitol Hill, 105 University Ave., St. Paul, MN.

Draves, Dr. John Irvin
December 4, 1926 - December 9, 2015
On the evening of Dec. 9, 2015, Dr. John Irvin Draves, originally from Madison, Wis., passed away peacefully of natural causes at the age of 89. At the time of his passing he was comforted by his wife, Catherine, his immediate family, and his extended family composed of the staff at the Commons On Marice in Eagan Minn., a senior living center. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Catherine (Noble) Draves; son, David and wife, Tina Draves, son, John Draves; and five grandchildren, Jennifer (Cegalis) Birney, Julie Cegalis, Garrison Draves, Lauren Draves and Eli Draves. His daughter, Diane (Draves) Cegalis preceded him in death at the age of 51. Dr. Draves was a beloved dentist in private practice, in Monona Wis., for 35 years. He received a degree in Zoology from the UW-Madison in 1950 and went on to Marquette Dental School receiving his DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) in 1954. He and Catherine met in Madison but did not find each other until years later when they met again at a Badgers football game. They were married in Milwaukee, on June 23, 1954, at Marquette University. Prior to becoming a dentist he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1945, where he served in World War II with U.S. occupational forces, Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1946 after receiving the Medal Meritorious Unit Award, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal of Good Conduct and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. Dr. Draves spent the time he had for relaxation with his family in Nekoosa, Wis., where together they built their cottage home on Lake Camelot. The family enjoyed toppling trees, waterskiing and became charter members of the Shermalot Ski Team. Dr. Draves was also a Freemason and member of the Scottish Rite's Pipes and Drums Corp for 20 years. He also served as president of the Optimist Club of East Madison. After his retirement Dr. Draves and wife, Catherine escaped the cold Wisconsin winters by living in Sun City West, where they golfed, danced and enjoyed the fellowship of other retirees. A family memorial service will be held at ST. JOHN NEUMANN CHURCH in Eagan, Minn., on Monday, Dec. 14, 2015. His remains will rest in Sun City West, Ariz., next to daughter, Diane.
