Milo Perry Backstrand was born on April 29, 1923 to Fred and Pearl Skadahl on a farm near Devils Lake, ND. As a young child his mother died, shortly after her death Milo moved to Moorhead to live with relatives, William and Tina Backstrand and their son, Fred Backstrand. He grew up and attended school, graduating from Moorhead High School in 1941. He married
Leona Scherbenske in 1947, in Fargo, ND. Leona died in 1976. Milo owned and operated a ceramic tile business until 1972 when he began working for Concordia College. On May 18, 1983 he married
Lucille Yde. He retired in 1986. Together Milo and Lucille moved to Lake Eunice in 1986. Milo had a love for music. He played the saxophone in many area bands, including the Band of Faith, Red River Valley Veterans Band, American Legion Band and many more. During Lucille's battle with Lou Gehrig's Disease she was a resident of St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes. After Lucille's death, Milo became a devoted volunteer with St. Mary's Nursing Home delivering mail and visiting the residents of St. Mary's Nursing Home. He was also an avid fisherman, went out dancing almost every Sunday and also enjoyed playing bingo.
He is survived by two sons, Drew Backstrand, Mendota Heights, MN and David Backstrand, Duluth, MN; one brother, Fred Backstrand, Bismarck, ND; one sister-in-law, Ruth Martin, Sun City, CA; and two granddaughters, Kristin and Marissa Backstrand.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Leona who died in 1972, his second wife Lucille, who died in 1995; one brother, Earl Martin; and one sister Gertie Lein.
In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church in Moorhead, MN or St. Mary's Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Rodney V. Lindstrom, 92
Died: Tuesday, May 17, 2005, in Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN.
Rodney Vincent Lindstrom, 92, was born at Lake Park, MN to Victor and Amanda (Selberg) Lindstrom. Rodney attended country school in District 42, Becker County through the 8th grade. He attended the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston, MN. Following graduation, Rodney was employed by his uncle, G. W. Larson in the landscape service. On November 6, 1937 he married
Genevieve Walstrom. After Rod and Gen were married
they moved to Thief River Falls, MN., where they managed and did design work for a local greenhouse. In 1941 they had an opportunity to move to Storm Lake, Iowa to work at the L.B. Floral Shop. On February 8, 1942 their only child, Vincent, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa. Rodney was drafted into the U.S. Army and sent to Germany. Following the war Rodney returned to farm with his brother, Victor, at Lake Park, MN. During the late 1940's and through the 1950's Rod and Gen were active in the American Legion and Rodney was also Commander of the local American Legion Post. In 1959 Rodney joined the Becker County Sheriff's Department becoming Chief Deputy. They joined the Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN. Rod and Gen retired in 1978 and decided to spend the winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Summers were spent in Detroit Lakes with a large garden and visits from friends and family. Rod and Gen also ran the Lake Air Motel in Detroit Lakes for a few years. They moved back to Lake Park in their later years. Gen died on March 17, 2001. Rod was a resident of Sunnyside Care Center, Lake Park, MN for the past four months. He died there on May 20, 2005 at the age of 92 years.
Rodney was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve; his parents and one sister, Mildred.
He is survived by a son; Vincent (Dorothy) Lindstrom, Joplin, MO.; two brothers, Orville (Mary) Lindstrom, Moorhead, MN and Victor Lindstrom of Lake Park, MN; one sister, Margie Magnuson, Bloomington, MN; two granddaughters, Lisa (Shane) Lindstrom, Minneapolis, MN and Liv (Drew) Gregor, Las Vegas, NV; two step granddaughters, Suzanne (Allen) Wheeler and Carrie Preusse, Minneapolis, MN; four great granddaughters and three step great granddaughters.

Roger Kevin Anderson, 42, of Fargo, North Dakota died Thursday, September 29, 2005.
Roger Anderson was born May 31, 1963 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota to Allan and Myrtle (Tessier) Anderson. He grew up and attended school in Ulen/Hitterdal. He worked as a welder with his father and brothers in Ulen/Hitterdal in his youth and continued as a welder in Denver, Colorado and Fargo, North Dakota. He married
Jan Thorson on July 3, 1993 in Sabin, Minnesota. They made their home in the Denver, Colorado area until moving to Fargo, North Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Arnie.
He is survived by his wife, Jan Anderson, Fargo, ND; two sons, Logan and Brady Anderson, Fargo, ND; his mother, Myrtle Anderson, Fargo, ND; three brothers, John (Carolyn) Anderson, Fargo, ND, James (Stacey) Anderson, Ulen, MN, and Ronald (Gloria) Anderson, Moorhead, MN; five sisters, Carol Estrin, Fergus Falls, MN, Karen (Harold) Roesch, Downer, MN, Diane (Wes) Carlsrud, Ada, MN, Debbie (Steve) Vigesaa, Moorhead, MN, and Connie (John) Ambuehl, Hawley, MN.

Betty Melby, 78, Moorhead, MN, died Tuesday, May 11, 2004, at her home surrounded by her family under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Betty was born on July 04, 1925, in Hewitt, MN, to Wally and Marie Spring. Betty married
Warren Melby on May 12, 1942 and had one son, Joe. Betty worked as a waitress and a homemaker all her life. She was a wonderful wife and mother who loved her children and grandchildren dearly, Betty will be missed by many.
Betty is survived by her husband, Warren Melby, Moorhead, MN, one son, Joe (Terryl) Melby, Moorhead, MN, one sister, Mary McDonald, Montrose, SD, three grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents, Wally and Marie Spring, her step-father, Harry Falaas, and one sister Lavern Sorenson.

Robert Duane Swenson was born on May 28, 1947, in Moorhead, MN, to Norman and Arlene (Wright) Swenson. He grew up and attended school in Moorhead and Dilworth, graduating from Dilworth High School in 1965. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, serving in Germany where he met his wife Christine. Robert married
Christine Schmidt on October 10, 1970, in Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth, MN. They lived in Fargo, ND, for a short time before moving to Moorhead, where they have lived since. Robert worked for the Department of Veteran's Affairs for thirty-two years, retiring on December 31, 2000.
Bob was a kind and loving husband, father, son and brother. He loved life and sports, particularly basketball, golf and fishing. His granddaughter, Kaylee, was the apple of his eye.
Bob is survived by his wife, Christine Swenson, Moorhead; son, David (Jamie) Swenson, Glyndon, MN; parents, Norman and Arlene Swenson, Dilworth, MN; brother, Richard (Beverly) Swenson, Moorhead; granddaughter, Kaylee Swenson, Glyndon, MN; Niece and Nephew, Dean (Jodi) Stoa Swenson, Minneapolis, MN, and Dawn Swenson, Moorhead, MN; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Dr. Gerhard H.R. Reisig, 95

Dr. Gerhard H. R. Reisig passed away Wednesday, March 9, 2005, at the home of his daughter, in Moorhead, MN.
Born in Leipzig, Germany, in 1910, Dr. Reisig attended the Nikolaischule there through high school. He received his engineering degree from the Technical University in Dresden, Germany, and later earned his doctorate in engineering from the University of Braunschweig, Germany.
After working for the Siemens Company in Berlin for several years, he joined the Wernher von Braun rocket team in Peenemuende, Germany. In 1946, he moved with the team to El Paso, Texas, and in 1951, to Huntsville, Alabama. He remained with the team until his retirement, working early on at the Army Ballistic Missile Agency, and later, at Marshall Space Flight Center. Soon after retirement, he taught for a year at Concordia College, Moorhead, as a visiting professor of physics; he continued working on various projects and authored a comprehensive history of rocket technology. Until the last several years, he regularly participated in space-related meetings and gave lectures. Thus, he maintained contact with scientists in many countries, and found joy and fulfillment in encouraging young scientists.
Dr. Reisig was an avid musician from his school days on. He played the violin and viola, participating in school and university orchestras. In Huntsville, he played in chamber music groups, and developed many close friendships along the way. With Mr. Alvin Dreger, he founded the Huntsville Chamber Music Guild.
Dr. Reisig married
Gisela Haenichen in 1937. Their shared love of music provided a deep bond and lifelong enjoyment. Mrs. Reisig preceded him in death. The Reisigs are survived by two daughters, Ms. Gerlinda Talbot, Huntsville, and Dr. Godela Iverson (Dr. Stanley), Moorhead; three grandchildren, Jamie Talbot (Dawn), Cairo, GA, Andrea Greiff (Eric), Moorhead, and Margaret Iverson, Washington, DC; and one great-grandchild, Caroline Talbot.
Vernon E. Oberg, 78

Vernon E. Oberg, 78, Moorhead, MN, died on February 10, 2005, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, following a long battle with cancer.
Vernon was born on October 4, 1926, in Fargo, ND, to Gudmund and Myrtle (Grinde) Oberg. He was raised near Kragnes and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1945. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Vernon married
Jean Ecklund on June 22, 1951 and they made their home in the Moorhead-Kragnes area. He built homes and apartments in the F-M area for many years, and also erected Marley Cooling Towers for Therm-Air Sales Corp. of Fargo. He was a long-time member of North Buffalo Lutheran Church, serving as a deacon and on the building committee board. He was also a member of the Moorhead American Legion. He served on the original board of directors for the Red River Serenity Manor in Barnesville, MN.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Jean, one daughter, Cheryl (Ralph) Krabbenhoft, Sabin, MN; two sons, Barry (Lori), Bruce (Vicki), both of rural Glyndon, MN; nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; four brothers, James (Jean), Dilworth, MN, Elmer (Arlys), Moorhead, MN, Marlin (Jeannette) Valley City, ND, and Ernest (Wilma Jean), Moorhead, MN; three sisters, Mildred (Glen) Kuehl, Glyndon, Joan (Duane) Erickson, Moorhead, Frances (Don) Domek, St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John.
Clarence Mikkelsen, 87

Clarence Mikkelsen, 87, Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND, died on March 27, 2004 in the nursing home.
Clarence Mikkelsen was born December 26, 1916 in the township of Glyndon, Clay County, MN, to William and Katherine (Krabbenhoft) Mikkelsen. He was a graduate of Glyndon High School.
He married
Irene Safgren of Moorhead, on November 9, 1940, in Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, MN. They farmed near Glyndon, MN, where Clarence became involved in growing potatoes and was recognized as one of the larger growers in Clay County. He continued farming through 1963, when he started the Mikkelsen Insurance Agency in Moorhead, where he worked until 1997. He was always interested in the welfare and education of children and served as a member of local, regional and state school boards for over 33 years. Because of his dedication, the Athletic Field in Glyndon bears his name.
Clarence was baptized, confirmed and a life time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sabin, MN, where he served for many years on the church board.
In 1963 Clarence built the strip shopping mall on Highway 10 in Glyndon and also owned and operated the Tastee Freeze for many years. Clarence was actively involved in many organizations including the Glyndon Athletic Club and the Rod and Gun Club.
He is survived by his wife Irene and three children. Gary (Marlys), Fargo, ND; Trish, Chandler, AZ, and Tom, Minneapolis, MN; thirteen grandchildren and a sister, Ruth Mikkelsen, Moorhead, MN.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters and his son Mike.
