Mavis A. Swapp age 84 of Detroit Lakes, MN died Thursday March 4, 2010 at St. Mary’s Innovis Heath, Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Mavis Annabelle Swapp was born on October 12, 1925 in rural Ogema, MN to Edward and Clara Nelson Sanden. She grew up and attended District 54 country school there. She then attended Ulen High School, where she graduated in 1945. She attended Moorhead State teachers College where she obtained both an Associate Degree in Education and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. On March 18, 1951 she was united in marriage to Ervin W. Swapp in Detroit Lakes, MN. They lived in rural Detroit Lakes and Mavis taught in various country schools in Becker and Ottertail counties. In 1957 she began teaching in the Frazee-Vergas schools, where she retired thirty one years later in 1988. Mavis became one of the first people to move into the Lincoln Park Senior Apartments in 2001 and in 2006 became a resident at St. Mary’s Nursing Center.

Mavis was a member of the Retired Educators and the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority. Her hobbies include genealogy, playing cards, reading, fishing and dancing. Mavis also wrote an article on her teaching memories that now resides in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C.

She is survived by one sister, Anna (Burton) Bisbee, of Grand Rapids, MN, four nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin (2000), one brother, Edsel Sanden, and four sisters, Ellen Sanden, Gladys Sanden, Lorraine Sanden, and Hermine Rew.

Alyce D. Hillman
Service: Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10:00 AM at First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, MN.

Alyce Darlene Hillman, 74, of Ramsey, Minnesota, formerly of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away Monday, September 06, 2010 at Mercy Hospital, Coon Rapids, Minnesota.

Alyce was born on May 3rd, 1936, the daughter of Daniel and Alma Warter in Perham, Minnesota. She graduated from Frazee High School in 1953. She was united in marriage to Roger Hillman on December 26, 1962 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Frazee, MN. She worked various jobs in Detroit Lakes, MN. The family moved to New Rockford, ND in 1964, returning to Detroit Lakes in 1969. They purchased a farm north of Detroit Lakes in 1971 and raised turkeys. They sold the farm in 1979 and moved back to town. Alyce worked for Dakota Clinic where she retired in 1999. Roger and Alyce moved to Ramsey, MN in 2008.

Alyce was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time with friends and family. Her hobbies included fishing, hunting, reading and traveling with her husband, Roger.

Alyce was preceded in death by her parents, brother Martin Warter, and husband Roger in February of this year. She is survived by three sons, Roger (Anne) Hillman, Jr. of Billings, MT; Terry Ouart of Dilworth, MN; Kenneth (Dawneld) Ouart of Zimmerman, MN; two daughters, Kim Hillman of Missoula, MT; Janelle (Dan) Disrud of Champlin, MN; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Lutheran Sign Fund at First Lutheran Church - Detroit Lakes, MN.

Larry L. Wanner
Service: Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at Noon at West-Kjos Funeral Home.

Larry L. Wanner, age 61, of Frazee, MN died Wednesday Nov. 24, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

Larry Lee Wanner was born on June 27, 1949 in Bismarck, ND to Alvin and Sarah Heinle Wanner. He moved to Lake Park, MN as a young boy and attended school there. He later graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. He then served in the United States Air Force from 1968-1972. Following his discharge from the Air Force he returned to the Detroit Lakes area. He worked at various jobs before starting to work for Bergen’s Greenhouse in Detroit Lakes, where he has worked for the past 15 years.

Larry enjoyed gardening, reading, and his dogs.

He is survived by, one sister; Dar (Bill) Waldron, of Park Rapids, MN; three brothers, Gene (Sharyn) Wanner, of W. Fargo, ND; Andrew (JoAnn) Wanner, of Garland, TX; Alvin Wanner Jr. of Lake Park, MN, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Sandra K. Lee
Service: Tuesday, December 7, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Richwood Lutheran Church, rural Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Visitation: Monday, December 6, 2010 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home.

Sandra K. Lee, 59, rural Audubon, MN died Thursday, December 2, 2010 at Sanford Health Palliative Care, Fargo, ND.

Sandra was born on December 1, 1951, the daughter of Clarence and Martha (Hanson) Remmen In Detroit Lakes, MN. She grew up in Audubon and graduated from Audubon School High School in 1969. She married Robert Lee in 1970. They were blessed with two children. Sandra worked for the Northwestern Bell Phone Company and later attended Moorhead State University, receiving a degree in accounting.

Sandra worked various jobs throughout her life, they included working at the Elks Lodge, Masonic Grand Lodge both in Fargo and most recently at White Earth Health Services. She was long time member of Richwood Lutheran Church, prior to becoming a member of Olivet Lutheran Church in Fargo.

Sandra enjoyed fishing, bowling, crocheting, spending time with family and especially the time spent with her grandchildren. She was also a huge Green Bay Packers fan, music lover, enjoyed gardening, spending time with her friend, Dennis, and her beloved cats, Max and Sam. Sandra will always be remembered for her great sense of humor.

Sandra is survived by her daughter, Angela Koltes of Fargo, MN; son, Jim (Vickie) Lee of Detroit Lakes, MN; two grandchildren, Henry and Reagan Lee; her mother, Martha Remmen of rural Audubon, MN; numerous friends, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Sandra was preceded in death by her father, Clarence and brother James Remmen.

Horace A. Barton

Horace A. Barton, 88, of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Council Bluffs, IA, died Sunday, January 17, 2010 at St. Mary’s Innovis Health, Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Horace Barton was born on July 6, 1921 in Council Bluffs, IA to Benjamin and Myrtle Winn Barton. He grew up and received his education in Council Bluffs, graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1939. While in High School he served as the class photographer. He then started a career with United Airlines as a radio operator. On October 25, 1942 he was united in marriage to Lucile Tinnel in Council Bluffs, IA. Over the years he worked for United Airlines in Omaha, Chicago, and Denver, retiring after 35 years of service. He moved to Detroit Lakes in 2008.

Horace was a very kind, gentle, soft spoken person who always put others needs before his. He enjoyed photography and fishing. He was also a self taught Ham Radio operator. His other hobbies included photographing airplanes and working on model airplanes. He was very active in Eastern Star, serving as Past Patron of Washington Park #126 and Grand Soloist of the State of Colorado. He was also a lifetime member of the Masons.

He is survived by two daughters; Judi Barton, of Detroit Lakes, MN and Cheryl (Dan) Howland, of Park Rapids, MN, four Grandchildren, seven Great Grandchildren, and one Sister; Martha (Ted) Hartman, of Big Sur, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lucile, and Great Grandson, Brandon Murphy.

In Lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Helen M. Fugere
Service: Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Visitation: Saturday, September 18, 2010 from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Helen Marcella Fugere, 88, of Detroit Lakes, MN died on September 13, 2010 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home.

She was born on March 24, 1922 in Moorhead, MN to Ole and Sophia Lee LeGrand. Helen graduated from Moorhead High School and Moorhead State Teachers College.

On October 21, 1967 she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Thomas Fugere, in Park Rapids, MN. Helen taught in the Fargo Public Schools at Roosevelt and Ben Franklin until retiring in 1984. She and her husband also owned and operated Tom’s Antique Shops in Fargo, ND and Detroit Lakes. Following their retirement, they made their home in Detroit Lakes.

Helen loved her home on the lake and welcomed friends and neighbors in for coffee, cookies and a good visit -- always with her beloved poodles by her side. Helen never lost the desire to teach children, and in her retirement helped schoolchildren learn to read.

She is survived by two brothers, Odis (Eunice) LeGrand, of Valley City, ND; Glenn (Marion) LeGrand, of Sioux City, IA; her best buddies “Muffin” and “Jolie” and several nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Thomas (1999) and her sister, Arlene Thompson

Donna D. Colvard
Service: Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Community Alliance Church, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Visitation: Tuesday, December 29, 2009 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m.

Donna D. Colvard, 71, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.

Donna was born on March 26, 1938, the daughter of Clyde and Olive “Marie” (Kennedy) Marshaw in Los Angeles, California. She was raised and educated in the Los Angeles area. Donna was united in marriage to Frank Colvard on September 14, 1956 in Highland Park, California. They moved to Bloomington, Minnesota in 1976 and to Detroit Lakes in 1985. Donna worked at Grover Lindberg Truck Stop, Old Washington Café, Country Inn Suites and most recent as a greeter at Walmart.

Donna enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking them shopping and out to eat. She enjoyed work and loved being a Walmart greeter. Donna always had a smile for everyone.

Donna is survived by her two sons, Michael Colvard of Seattle, Washington; Gil (Jackie) Colvard of Stevensons Ranch, California; daughter, Cindy (Dave) Hanson of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; nine grandchildren, Daniel (Lisa) Colvard, Amanda Colvard, Christopher Colvard, Adam Colvard, Bryce Colvard, Nicholas Colvard, David Gotheridge, Jacob Hanson and Derek Hanson; one great grandson, Landon Larson; one brother, Daniel (Judy) Marshaw of Bloomington, Minnesota; two sisters, Beverly Matthews and Delores Davis both of Santa Maria, California; numerous nieces and nephews; her beloved cat, Baby.

Donna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Frank (2001), one brother, Sinclair Marshaw, two sisters, Marcelle and Delores Colette.
