Viola Rud
Viola I. Rud, 88, Pelican Rapids, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Pelican Rapids Good Samaritan Center.
She was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Fergus Falls to Bengt and Anna (Larson) Peterson.
On July 8, 1938, she married
Fredrick Rud at Augustana Lutheran Church of Fergus Falls. The couple lived and farmed on the Rud Family farm on Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids. She worked at West Central Turkey Plant and after several years, opened Vi's Drive Inn. She then began her own catering business, where she did receptions, weddings, and open houses. She also spent many years as the organist for the Congregational Church in Pelican Rapids.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Pelican Rapids and Sweet Adeline's, a singing group.
She is survived by three daughters: Sylvia (Jim) Bilden of East Grand Forks, Violet (Roger) Stephenson of rural Pelican Rapids and Laura Rud of Madison, Wis.; two sons, Dr. Lyle (Betty) Rud of Arlington and Dr. Daniel (Judy) Rud of Crookston; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; one sister, Vera Lundberg of Minneapolis; sisters-in-law, Lena Allen of Pelican Rapids; and Dorothy Peterson of Williston. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, who died in 1994; one daughter, Evangeline; and eight siblings.

Hazel Bowman
Hazel D. Bowman, 94, Fergus Falls, formerly of Ashby, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at Pioneer Retirement Community of Fergus Falls.
She was born April 28, 1910, in Eagle Lake Township, to Daniel and Olena (Finkelson) Peterson. On Nov. 29, 1930, at her parent's farm in Eagle Lake Township, she married
Ernest Bowman. They farmed in Eagle Lake Township until 1981 when they moved to Ashby. In 1996, they moved to Riverview Heights in Fergus Falls. In September of 1999, she entered Lake Region Nursing Home and on July 2, 2001, she moved to the Pioneer Retirement Community Center.
She loved her Lord Jesus Christ and trusted Him to care for her. Her faith was a testimony to those around her. She was a lifetime member of Grue Lutheran Church and active in Ladies Aid. She was a Sunday School teacher for many years and one time served as Sunday School Superintendent. She was also an active member of the Ashby Senior Citizens, serving on many boards and committees. She also served on the Committee on Aging. In 1981 she was chosen to go to the Minnesota State Fair to represent Grant County as Senior Citizen Queen. She was a volunteer at Pelican Lake Care Center for many years. Her greatest source of enjoyment there was the weaving of rugs. She took great pride in her rugs and could not keep up with the demand. She continued this as long as her health permitted. She loved her flowers, crafts, crocheting, knitting and quilting. She was most generous with her talents.
She is survived by her three children: James (Mary) of Elgin, Ill., Janice (Dale) Rieken and Dennis (Paulette) both of Fergus Falls; six grandchildren: Loren, David, Karen, Eric, Brian and Jennifer; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ernest; one granddaughter, Lori; one grandson, Lowell; three sisters; and one brother.
Visitation: Friday, Dec. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and also for one hour prior to services at the church

Harold Luther
Harold Luther, 90, Fergus Falls, died Wednesday, Oct.27, 2004.
He was born July 12, 1914, in Fergus Falls, to Henry and Karolina (Haarstick) Luther. He grew up in the Fergus Falls area and worked on the family farm until joining the United States Army. He served in Europe as a gunner during World War II.
On March 14, 1943, he married
Mabel Johnson in Fergus Falls. Upon his discharge, he returned to Fergus Falls where he worked for Fergus Jobbing. In the early 1960s, he began working in the Utilities Department for the City of Fergus Falls, retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the First United Church of Christ, Fergus Falls, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, gardening, the outdoors, and visiting with people. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel of Fergus Falls; one daughter, Marlene Arndt of Clear Lake; five grandchildren: Brian (Renee) Luther, Michael (Lori) Luther, Scott Luther, Jesse (Laura) Arndt, and Meghan (Chris) Wiebe; two great-grandchildren, Andrew Chaperson and Owen Luther Arndt; two brothers, Henry (Joyce) Luther and Leonard Luther all of Fergus Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis Luther who died in 1988, and a sister, Alvina Luther who died in 1990.
Visitation: Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Olson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Leona Winkelman
Leona E. Winkelman, 86, died Oct. 16, 2004, at Fair Oaks Lodge, Wadena.
She was born July 12, 1918, in Perham to Frederick and Catherine (Luhning) Dunker. She married
Harvey Otto Winkelman March 20, 1938, in Ottertail.
She is survived by her sons, Myron (Karen), Wadena, and Gary, Blue Earth; daughter, Marlene (Don) Pixler of Colorado; one grandchild; sister, Dorothy (Harry) Witt, Henning; sisters in law Katie Dunker, Henning, and Edna Winkelman, Fergus Falls; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her spouse, Harvey Winkelman, who died Aug. 27, 2003; parents, Fred and Catherine; infant son; brothers, Henry and Arthur; sisters, Olga Koplin and Wilma Kimber; and sisters and brothers in law.
Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

David Vore
David Vore, 77, Fergus Falls, died Nov. 30, 2004, in Alamo, Texas.
He was born March 24, 1927, to Conrad M. and Elsa (Biegert) Vore in Fergus Falls. As a youngster he was bat boy for the Fergus Falls Red Sox, the local semi-pro baseball team. Drafted into the Army out of his junior year of high school, he spent 14 months in Germany immediately following WW II. After his discharge he returned to Fergus Falls and joined his father selling and repairing Surge dairy equipment and sewing machines at Vores Surge Store.
On July 16, 1949, he married
Helen Warn of Gwinner, N.D., and together they continued in the business until retirement in 1989. In their 40-year career they expanded the business to include firearms, gunsmithing and sporting equipment. Dave was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, loved wildlife, and was active in Ducks Unlimited, local sportsmans' groups and the local trapshooting and rifle clubs. He enjoyed spending time with his sons and was very involved the Junior Rifle Club and Boy Scouts. After retirement he remained active and loved golf, pool and dancing. He and Helen spent winters in Texas, where he died of a massive heart attack while dancing. He was a member of the VFW, the National Rifle Association and the Grace United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen, of Fergus Falls; sons: Mark (Mary Lynn) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, John (Teri) of Hamilton, Mont., Robert of Christchurch, New Zealand, Tim of Spokane, WA; three grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Eugene Holt
Eugene Thomas Holt, 86, rural Elizabeth, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls.
He was born June 2, 1918, in Barnesville, to Eddie and Thea (Strandlien) Holt. The oldest of 11 children, he grew up in Norwegian Grove. He was very proud to serve for four and one half years, during World War II, in the 109th Engineers Combat Battalion, 34th Red Bull Infantry Division. During his time in the military, he was stationed in Europe, Africa, Italy and England.
On Oct. 1, 1946, he married
Eleanora Alma Norgren. Together Eugene and Eleanora raised four children while operating a family dairy farm in rural Elizabeth. He was artistic. Besides drawing and painting he enjoyed creating things out of scrap materials.
He was the chairman of School District 36 in Elizabeth for nine years, member of Augustana Lutheran Church in Elizabeth serving on the church council for a number of years and was also on the cemetery board. He was the Chairman of the Carlisle Coop Oil Board for nine years and was the recipient of the Farmer of the Year Award. He was active in 4-H as a youth and as a 4-H leader as an adult, a member of the V.F.W. Post 612, Elizabeth Sportsmen Club and enjoyed playing horseshoes with the Elizabeth Horseshoe Club where he received several trophies.
He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanora of Elizabeth; four children: Karen Reid of McGregor, David (Lorri) Holt of Elizabeth, Janet (Jim) Robinson of Barnum, Sandra (Mike) Knutson of Moorhead; eight grandchildren: Rachelle (Chris) Glunz, Meloney (Tom) Knight, John (Jeni) Reid, Megan, Adam and Melissa Barker, Thomas and Aimee Knutson; five great-grandchildren: Joey and Willie Glunz, Matthew Knight, Marissa and Paige Reid; brothers: Virgil (Arlene) Holt of Barnesville, Curtis (Mavis) Holt of Barnesville, Wallace (Marlys) Holt of Barnesville and sisters, Irene Jonson of Battle Lake, Frances Axness of Pelican Rapids and Geneva (Richard) Adams of St. Paul.
He is preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence and Wayne; sisters, Marion Pederson and Hazel Borg; and son-in-law, Douglas Reid.
Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church
