John L. Pike, 88, of Gilbert died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; a brother, Edward; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home with recitation of the rosary at 6:30 p.m. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Gilbert. Burial with military honors accorded by the Gilbert VFW Post in Gilbert cemetery.

Victoria Ann Matesha
Victoria Ann Matesha of Ely passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2001.
She was called home to her family after a long stay in the Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.

She was born and raised in Ely and was a prominent member of the business community. She was owner/operator of Vickies Dress Shop, a member of the American Fraternal Union, a sponsor of a successful bowling team, a generous supporter of the Ely-Bloomenson Hospital and Nursing Home, and a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Victoria loved the outdoors, flowers, fishing, gardening and being at the lake.

She was preceded in death by parents, Michael and Barbara; brothers Joseph, Matt and George; and sisters Barbara, Ann, Kathryn and Agatha.

Survivors include two nephews; two nieces; several grandnieces and grandnephews; and many friends including longtime friend and caregiver, Marian Swanson and family.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Ely, the Rev. James Scheuer officiating. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.

Clarence J. "Cotton" Nibbelin
Clarence J. "Cotton" Nibbelin, 95, Balsam Township resident, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Itasca Nursing Home, Grand Rapids.
Born April 24, 1906, in Elmwood, Ill., he was the son of John and Amy (Higgins) Nibbelin. He lived most of his life in Peoria, Ill., before his retirement in 1965. He had been a resident of the Balsam area since 1972. Clarence attended Bradley University in Peoria, where he received his certificate in electrical engineering. He had been a supervisor in the electrical shop of the Solvents Corp. in Peoria before his retirement.

Clarence and Muriel Johnson were married July 21, 1929, in Peoria. Clarence was a former member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Peoria and had served as an elder. At the time of his death, he was a member of Balsam Bible Chapel, the American Institute of Electrical Engineers and the Balsam Senior Citizens.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Amy Nibbelin; his wife, Muriel, in 1990; a son, David A. Nibbelin, in 1989; three sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Irvin of Morton, Ill.; a son, Denis (Carol) Nibbelin of Fairfax, Va.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Abigill of Baltimore.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Friday in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine. Interment in Balsam cemetery. The family prefers memorials to Balsam Bible Chapel or the Itasca Nursing Home.

Robert William Merchant
Robert William Merchant, 46, of Minneapolis and formerly of Grand Rapids, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2001, in his home.
He is survived by daughters Nicole and Marrisa; his mother, Edna Merchant; his father, Arthur Merchant; sisters Marlene Stenach and Susan Merchant; a brother, David Merchant; two nieces; a nephew; two stepsisters; and a stepbrother.
Memorial service: 6 p.m. Friday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Burial in Harris cemetery, Harris Township, Minn.

Carol J. "Papenfuhs" Ahern
Carol J. "Papenfuhs" Ahern, 47, of Reno, Nev., formerly of Moose Lake, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001.
She is survived by children Jeremy (Annette) Pangerl, Tammy (John) Pangerl, Josh (Kerry) Pangerl, Anthony Williams and Eric Williams; two grandchildren; her foster mother; three brothers; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 4 p.m. Friday in Evangelical Covenant Church, Moose Lake. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Sophie K. Enzmann
Sophie K. Enzmann, 85, of Cook died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in Cook Hospital.
She is survived by a son, James "Jim" of Cook; a daughter, Carol Kleven of Cook; a brother, Louis (Florence) Anthony of Cook; sisters Julia (Eldred) Burtness of Cook and Irene (Archie) Thurman of Shelby Township, Mich.; grandchildren Marnie (Jeff) Bigler of Rochester, Minn., and Tom (Sara) Kleven of Moorhead, Minn.; great-grandchildren John, Mary and Grace Bigler; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday in Mlaker Funeral in Cook, and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Cook, the Rev. Marcus Hess officiating. Interment in Field Township cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the kitchen fund of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook or the T.V. fund at the Cook Nursing Home.

Arthur "Art" T. Klofstad
Arthur "Art" T. Klofstad, 37, of Beaver Bay died suddenly Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Lake View Memorial Hospital.
He was born March 8, 1964, to Howard and Barbara (Hudyma) Klofstad in Two Harbors. He grew up in Silver Bay, graduated from William Kelly High School and served in the Navy.

Art was a caring person who loved to fish, hunt, camp and spend time with his friends and family. He was loved by many.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Alice Snow; and grandfathers John Hudyma and Arthur Klofstad.

He is survived by his wife, Becky (Rowlee); a son, Michael; a daughter, Kayla; his mother, Barbara Sterett; his father, Howard (Arlene) Klofstad; a sister, Janice (Nathan); a nephew, Nathan; a brother, Josh; his grandmother, Margaret Hudyma; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Art will be sadly missed by all that knew him and will forever remain in our hearts.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service today in Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Burial in Crystal Bay cemetery, Finland. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Marion A. Quick
Marion A. Quick, 75, of Minong died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in her home.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; sons Steve Quick and Donald (Debbie) Quick; daughters Joan (Terry) Planert, Sandra Cragin (Richard Wiss), Barb (Ronald) Teed and Gloria (Jim) Ladzinski; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother; and a sister.
Services were held Tuesday, Aug. 7. Interment in Greenwood cemetery, Minong. Arrangements by Brown Funeral Home.

Charles Henry Russell
Charles Henry Russell, 75, of Finland, Minn., died Thursday, June 28, 2001, at home.
He was born July 28, 1925, to Ralph and Mabel (Mudge) Russell in Brainerd. He attended schools in Brainerd and Thief River Falls, where he graduated from high school. He served in the Navy for a period of time and worked for Remington Rand Univac Corp. as an electronic technician. He worked in Winona, Minn., until retiring to Finland in the 1970s. He enjoyed fishing in Canada with Lois and being an amateur radio operator.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lois.

He is survived by a brother, Robert (Nancy) of Blaine, Minn.; a nephew, Scott (Terri) Russell and their children, Amanda and Catherine; and a niece, Cynthia Russell and her children, Jacob and Bailey.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Douglas Pelton Yost
Douglas Pelton Yost, 32, of Rice Lake, Wis., and formerly of Menomonie, Wis., died Thursday, July 26, 2001, following a motorcycle accident near Springdale, Ark.
Douglas was born May 28, 1969, in Eau Claire, Wis. His passion in life was flying. He worked in numerous corporate aviation positions, the most recent being Jack Link Snack Foods Inc., of Minong. Douglas was also a flight instructor specializing in sea plane flying. He recently won a trophy for highest scoring "Pits Pilot" and he was awarded top national competitor in aerobatics.

Douglas' vigor for life was never ending. He was an avid sportsman, great hunter, excellent marksman, skydiver, race car driver, fisherman and creative entrepreneur.

Douglas will live on through his gift of life through tissue and organ donation.

He is survived by his father, Charles E. Yost of Menomonie; his mother, Susan P. Gibbs of Charlestown, R.I.; a sister, Angela S. Munson of Menomonie; nephews, Alex and Tyler Munson; Avelin S. Yost of Menomonie; and Ann, Caitlin and Jake Nelson of Rice Lake. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
A tribute to Douglas' life will be at 6 p.m. Monday in Olson Funeral Home, Menomonie. The family will meet with friends from 4 p.m. until the time of the tribute. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to "The Douglas P. Yost Aviation Scholarship Fund" through First Bank and Trust of Menomonie.

Arthur Nicholls Cartwright
Arthur Nicholls Cartwright, 87, of Biwabik died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center, Virginia.
He was born June 22, 1914, in Brainerd to Arthur and Kate (Nicholls) Cartwright. On Nov. 12, 1942, he was united in marriage to Edna Orfald. He was a lifelong resident of Biwabik and a member of Community United Church of Christ, where he sang in the choir for many years. He also played trumpet in the Biwabik City Band starting as a teen-ager and continued through the duration of the band. His love of music extended to playing the saw for his family and special music at church.

He had been employed at the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway and retired from the White Community Hospital as a boiler engineer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna; a sister, Helen; and a brother, Bill.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda (Russ) Norha and Shirley (Rich) Czarniecki, both of Plymouth, Minn.; a sister, Irene Miles of Biwabik; grandchildren Anita, Eric, Kirk and Diane; great-grandchildren Josh, Ben and Brianna; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.
Memorial service: 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Community United Church of Christ, Biwabik, the Rev. Susan Faunce-Zimmerman officiating. Inurnment in Lakeside cemetery, Biwabik. Arrangements by Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Gilbert. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Community Church of Christ.
