Irma I. Lavato
Irma I. Lavato, 80, of Eveleth died Friday, July 20, 2001, in Eveleth as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born March 28, 1921.
Survivors include sons Anthony Lavato of Minneapolis and Greg Lavato of Virginia; and a sister, Rochelle Torre of Lodi, Calif.
Visitation: 10:30 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Monday in Resurrection Catholic Church, Eveleth. Inurnment in Eveleth cemetery.
Aale E. Maki
Aale E. Maki, 88, of Brule died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Aale is survived by a daughter, Ann Marie (Jack) Olsen; grandchildren John (Marla) Olsen and Lynn Olsen; five great-grandchildren; two sisters; a brother; many nieces and nephews; and a sister-in-law.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. today in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home and continues from 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. service Saturday, also in the funeral home. Interment in Everrest cemetery, Waino, Wis.
Vernon E. "Sandy" Sandberg
Vernon E. "Sandy" Sandberg, 89, of Oronoco, Minn., died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in Pine Haven Care Center, Pine Island, Minn.
He was born Aug. 29, 1911, in Duluth. He graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended the Minneapolis Institute of Art, where he met his wife, Marcia Fleming. They were married
April 15, 1939, in Northwood, Iowa. They moved to Two Harbors, where they lived on the shores of Lake Superior until 1997, and then moved to Oronoco.
Mr. Sandberg earned a living as an auto mechanic but was also an accomplished photographer and cabinet maker, a voracious reader of literature and lover of music.
He was preceded in death by a sister.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia of Oronoco; daughters Karen (Thomas) Bliss of Oronoco, Gretta (Lewis) Freeman of Arlington, Va., and Jennifer (Clinton) McCully of Oakton, Va.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and sisters Margory Sandberg of San Antonio, Texas, and Virginia Herzing of Harlingen, Texas.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday in First Unitarian Universalist Church, Rochester, Minn., the Rev. Dillman Sorrels officiating. Private interment at a later date. Arrangements by Schad & Zabel Funeral Home, Plainview, Minn.
Ernest "Ernie" Edward Walli
Ernest "Ernie" Edward Walli, 82, of Wright died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in his home.
He was born May 29, 1919, in Lakeview Township to Jacob and Sophia (Johnson) Walli. He graduated from Cromwell High School in 1938 and attended Duluth Business School. During World War II, Ernie worked at the Buick Motor Company in Flint, Mich., building aircraft engines for the war effort. After the war, he moved to Minneapolis.
He married
Madeline O'Connel in 1955 and she preceded him in death in 1981. He worked as a government inspector at Honeywell for many years and as a quality control specialist with the Veteran's Administration. Since 1976 he worked part time as a bellman at the Sheraton Ritz in Minneapolis. He worked full time from 1981 until the hotel closed in 1988. On Aug. 20, 1988, he married
Shirley Skrzela in Wright. They built and made their home on Cole Lake in Lakeview Township. From 1990-92, Ernie worked at the Omni North Star Hotel in Minneapolis.
Ernie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Wright, Lakeside Community Clubhouse, Wright Senior Citizens and the Carlton County Historical Society. He enjoyed bowling, dancing and playing cards.
In addition to his first wife, Ernie was preceded in death by his brothers, Eino, Arthur and Henry.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley of Wright, and her children, JoAnn (Don) Tickle, Janice (Tony) OrtMertl, Richard (Terri) Skrzela and David (Amy) Skrzela, all of Clio, Mich.; step-grandchildren, Sue and Stanley Tickle, Gary and Kevin OrtMertl and Danielle and Jessica Skrzela; a step-great-grandchild, Jenna Powell; his first wife; Madeline's children, Patricia Panagos, Marvel Pomish and Jack O'Connel, all of Minneapolis; a step-granddaughter, Deborah Frank; a step-great-granddaughter, Rachel Ann Frank; brothers Arne (Fran) of Flushing, Mich., Charles (Norma) of Wright, Reino (Donna) of Greensboro, N.C., and Sulo (Dolores) of Wright; sisters Elma Bordwell of Spokane, Wash., and Jennie Waisanen of Wright; a sister-in-law, Helvi (Henry) Walli of Duluth; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2-5 p.m. Sunday in Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet, and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Bethany Lutheran Church, Cromwell. Jean M. Abbas
Jean M. Abbas, 62, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001.
She grew up in Nashwauk and later attended beauty college in Duluth. She married
Tommy Dale Abbas on Feb. 8, 1964.
Jean enjoyed family, friends, fishing and fun. She will always be remembered for her quick wit and spark of life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy.
She is survived by her children, Steve (Charlotte) of Red Wing, Lori (Todd) Hanson of Cannon Falls, Bob (Leanne) of Ellsworth, Wis., and Tommy (Theresa) of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren Nick, Ashley, Tommy and Nick; siblings Jerry (Doris) Gaffney, Kay (Ray) Jones and Carol Scott; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Renville, Minn. A memorial will be set up in honor of Jean by her children at one of her favorite fishing places. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota, (612) 825-2435.

Beverly D. (Saker) Lineton, 75, formerly of Lake Nebagamon, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001.
In addition to her husband, Ron, she is survived by daughters, Linda (Charles) Olenski, Dawn (William) Schaefer and Lori Saker; a son David (Patricia); a stepdaughter, Judith (Earl) McKechnie; a stepson, John (Dianne) Lineton; 15 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and sister-in-law, Mable Saker.

Susan Elizabeth Brogle, 45, of Pine River died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, in St. Joseph's Medical Center, Brainerd.

Stephen R. Haas, 55, of Deer River died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Deer River.

Anna Johanna Kohn
Anna Johanna Kohn, 89, of Cloquet died Thursday, July 19, 2001, in Community Memorial Hospital Convalescent Care Section, Cloquet.
She was born Aug. 5, 1911, in Cromwell, to Erick and Sophia Karppinen. She was raised in Cromwell and graduated from Cromwell High School. Anna was united in marriage to Harold Kohn in Carlton on Feb. 16, 1931. She was active with the Jubilantees, Cloquet Senior Citizens, and was a longtime member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. She formerly worked at Jim's Hamburger and Disco Foods in Cloquet.
Anna was preceded in death by her parents and granddaughters, Joelene and Dee Ann Ridlington.
She is survived by her husband, Harold; sons Gene (Pat) Kohn of Scanlon and Bruce (Lorrie) Kohn of Rhinelander, Wis.; a daughter, Marcia (Floyd) Ridlington of Cloquet; grandchildren Kim Holmi, Mike Kohn and Steve Kohn; eight great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Sunday in Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cloquet, the Rev. Donald Love officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Grove cemetery. Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Care of Cloquet.
Caesar P. Cadari
Caesar P. Cadari, 92, of Ely died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Ely-Bloomenson Nursing Home.
He was born May 8, 1909, in Ely to Alphonse and Maria (Bacigalupo) Cadari. On Nov. 22, 1933, he married
Christine Jerich in Ely. He was a police officer for the city of Ely, then was a plant guard at the Zenith Mine, and later a furnace operator with Erie Mining Co., until his retirement.
Caesar was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Caroline Ricci and Josephine Tibone; and a brother, Anthony Rosasco.
Survivors include his wife, Christine, of 67 years; a daughter, Mary (Jack) Williams of Waseca, Minn.; sons Ronald (Joyce) Cadari of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Dennis Cadari of Gilbert; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Carl (Eileen) Galli of Bagley, Minn.
Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church, the Rev. James Scheuer as celebrant. Inurnment to follow in Ely cemetery. Arrangements by Kerntz Funeral Home, Ely.
Marvin M. Pieske
Marvin M. Pieske, 76, of Jacobson died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in Cohasset.
Survivors include daughters Joyce (Ron) Ferkingstad, Barbara (Michael) Veblen, Dawn Ovsak; sons Wayne "Butch" (Marcie Buirge) Pieske and Dwight (Barbara) Pieske; a sister, Norma Flattum; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids. Military Honors by Grand Rapids Veterans Organizations.

Albert J. Skofich died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in White Community Hospital, Aurora.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; sons Daniel (Liz) and Albert Jr.; a daughter, Corinne (Brian) Logan; three granddaughters; a sister, Florence (John) Prebarich; many other relatives; and godchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Monday with 6 p.m. rosary prayers in Ziemer-Moeglein-Shatava Funeral Home, Aurora, and continuing 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral Mass Tuesday in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Aurora. Burial with full military honors in the Eveleth cemetery.
