Dorothy May Armstrong
Dorothy M. Armstrong, 91, of Cloquet passed away Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Cloquet Memorial Hospital-Convalescent Care Section.
She was born Nov. 3, 1909, in Proctor to Frank and Grace (Shultz) Armstrong. They moved to Cloquet in 1914 where she graduated from Cloquet High School in 1929. Two weeks after graduation, she began working at First National Bank (now US Bank). Dorothy was a member of Presbyterian Church of Cloquet and was active in the women's circle. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, and actually made most of her clothes. Dorothy loved bagpipe and organ music and her garden of numerous flowers, but especially the African violets. She also enjoyed visiting and taking trips with her friends, but she also enjoyed being home with her cat.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Warren; her sister and brother-in-law, Audrey and Arthur Anderson.
She is survived by a nephew, Roger Anderson of Brainerd; cousins Elaine and Jim Coats of Palm City, Fla., and Jean St. George of Longwood, Fla.; and special friends and neighbors, Herb and Eunice Johnson and their families.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in Presbyterian Church of Cloquet. Honorary pallbearers: Don and LeaAnn Walsh, Scott and Jodi Lunke, and Shelly Wickstrom. Arlene Louise Bjella
Arlene Louise Bjella, 67, of Silver Bay died Friday April 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born Aug. 15, 1933, in Mizpah, Minn., to David and Alice (Siats) Fox. She was a graduate of Northhome High School and attended Bemidji State Teachers College, graduating with a degree in elementary education in 1957. Her teaching career brought her to Nashwauk and the Lab School at Bemidji State College, where she met and later married
Tim Bjella on June 28, 1958.
Arlene also worked as an elementary school teacher in Silver Bay. She later served for many years as librarian at the Silver Bay Public Library, where some of her favorite activities were story time for the children and special literary programs for adults. Arlene was active in numerous church, community and civic programs. During Silver Bay's growth years, she participated in the Jaycees, the PTA and as a Cub Scout den mother. The United Protestant Church benefited from her joy of music, gardening and guidance as president of the Womens' Guild. Arlene enjoyed oil painting and regularly displayed her work at the Silver Bay Art Shows. Her knitting and quilting skills kept many friends and family warm during cold Minnesota winters. Love of the outdoors was apparent by her beautiful flower gardens and the amount of time she enjoyed at the cabin on Midge Lake. Time spent with her family and friends was a most treasured part of her life. Arlene was a wonderful mother and grandmother who will be dearly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice (Clarence) Glassman and David Fox.
Arlene is survived by her husband, Tim; sons Eric of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Ross (Diane) of Milwaukee; grandchildren Anders and Braden Bjella; brothers David (Carlita) Fox of Killeen, Texas, Alan (Marion) Fox of Twin Bridges, Mont., Robert (Jeanette) Fox of Austin, Texas, and Mizpah.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in United Protestant Church, Silver Bay. Inurnment in Silver Bay cemetery at a later date. Memorials to the Silver Bay Public Library or the United Protestant Church.

John E. Frank
John E. Frank, 79, of Cloquet died Friday, April 13, 2001.
He was born Oct. 20, 1921, to Charles G. Frank and Myrtle E. (Berglund) Frank. John was a longtime employee of Potlatch in Cloquet. He was a World War II veteran and member of VFW and DAV. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. He loved being with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce E. (Kunelius) Frank; an infant daughter, Lois Jean; his parents; brothers Paul G. Frank, Charles Frank; and a sister, Marie Sayer.
He is survived by a son, John C. (Nancy) of Pocatello, Idaho; daughters Sue (Mick) Seme of Saginaw and Becky (Ken) Rice of Maple Grove, Minn.; grandchildren Ann, Jim, Ted, Nick and Nathan; a great-grandson, Jesse; a brother, Robert (Maralyn) Frank; sisters Mary E. (Bill) LaBuda, Ida Peterson and sister-in-law Helen Frank.
Family will receive friends: 6:30-8 p.m. Tuesday in Fellowship Hall, Zion Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Memorial service 11 a.m. Wednesday in the church. Spring inurnment in Maple Grove cemetery, Cloquet. Local arrangements by Northland Funeral Home.

Victor W. Lahti died Saturday, April 14, 2001, in the Virginia Regional Medical Center.

Daniel T. Hurd
Daniel T. Hurd, 54, of Cook died unexpectedly Thursday, April 12, 2001, in his residence.
He is survived by a son, Jeremy (Deidre) Hurd of Columbia, Mo.; three nieces and a nephew.

Howard Arthur Massie
Howard A. Massie, 83, of Grand Marais passed away Friday, April 13, 2001, in the North Shore Hospital, Grand Marais.
He was born Aug. 9, 1917, to Homer and Rosa (Monker) Massie in Grand Marais. He grew up in Lutsen, attended schools there and graduated from Grand Marais High School in 1935. He served in the Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant serving four years in the Air Transport Command, most of the time stationed in the Burma-India Theater. He married
Linnea Peterson Sept. 14, 1946, in St. Louis Park, Minn. He was in partnership with his father at the Cobblestone Service Station. He and Linnea raised three boys in Grand Marais. In 1957, he purchased the Ford Dealership in Grand Marais until selling it in 1983. During that time he served on the Cook County School Board for 16 years and later as Cook County Commissioner for four years. In retirement, he enjoyed gardening and volunteered his time on the Polar cemetery Board. He was proud of his raspberry patch and his constant companion, "Mickey." He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Grand Marais, Lion's Club and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Thomas; and brother, Philip.
He is survived by his wife, Linnea of Grand Marais; sons Steven of Boca Raton, Fla., and Jerry (Eileen) of Eagan, Minn.; a sister, Virginia (Marion) Killmer of Grand Marais; grandchildren Lisa Leavitt, Deanne Garcia, Timothy and Elizabeth Massie; and five great-grandchildren.

Lois Maxine Mangan
Lois Maxine Mangan, 82, of Cloquet died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Carlton Nursing Home.
She was born May 28, 1918 in Cloquet, the daughter of Joseph and Signe (Anderson) Ripplinger. A 1936 graduate of Cloquet High School, Lois worked at the Cloquet Credit Bureau for 12 years. She was a very active volunteer for the American Cancer Society, coordinating drivers to assist cancer patients and coordinating the daffodil sales. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Cloquet and enjoyed reading and needlework.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, June 10, 1980.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Patricia (Carl) Sariin of Carlton; granddaughters Melissa (Dale) Ennen of St. Paul and Bobbi (Kevin) Schatz of Columbus, Mont.; great-grandchildren Travis, Jessi, Wade, Garret and Alexis; a brother, Bruce Ripplinger of Cloquet and many family and friends.

Margaret Wallin
Margaret Wallin, 69, of Bovey died Friday, April 13, 2001.
She passed away at her sister Dorothy Wilson's home on Sugar Lake near Cohasset, with family by her side.
Survivors include her children, Guy (Tami) Rosbrook of Seattle, Joel (Jennifer) Charles of Castle Rock, Colo.; Margo (Anthony) LaPlanta of St. Paul and Troy (Carilla) Wallin of Bovey; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; five sisters and four brothers; many nieces and nephews.

Anthony "Tony" W. Crnkovich, 84, of Hibbing died Saturday, April 28, 2001, in his home.
He is survived by his wife, Rose; children Gregory (Laurie) Crnkovich, Bunnie (Jim) Moscatelli and Paul Stephans; six grandchildren; a brother; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard E. Geisert
Richard E. Geisert, 69, longtime area resident, died Friday, April 27, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Emily Geisert, three daughters; four sons; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandson; an aunt; a cousin; and his dog, Buddy.

John Ulicsni
John Ulicsni, 88, of Parkville died Friday, April 27, 2001, in the Virginia Convalescent Center.
He was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Virginia to Joseph and Leona (Bochna) Ulicsni and had been a Parkville resident since 1914. On Oct. 31, 1936, he married
Lahja A. Lipponen in Virginia. John retired in 1975 as a welder after 46 years of service for United States Steel.
John was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, St. John's Chapel and a charter member of United Steel Workers Local 1938. John loved to farm. He was loved by his children and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lahja; a son, Michael in 1964, in a plane crash in the South China Sea; brothers Joseph and Mike; and sisters Mary, Sophie, Rose and an infant sister.
Survivors include sons Robert (Margaret) Ulicsni of Virginia and John Ulicsni of Lake Vermilion, Tower; daughters Joyce (William) Chopp of Virginia, Judy (Richard) Brunfelt of Plymouth, Minn., and Linda (Tim) Nelson of Mountain Iron; grandchildren Jacquelyne and Steven Chopp, Mike and Michelle Brunfelt, Joy Craven, Kate and Paula Ulicsni, Rachel Turk and Tyler Nelson; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Tony (Betty) Ulicsni of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews; and his little Yorkie dog, George.
