Kathleen June Porter
Kathleen June Porter, 78, of Mahtowa died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in St. Luke's Medical Center, Duluth.
Born June 9, 1922, to John and Florence Hecker in Barnum, she entered into eternal rest at the age of 78 years and eight months. She was a 1940 graduate of Barnum High School. She married
Charles "Bud" Porter Nov. 30, 1940. She was a homemaker, a lifelong area resident, and a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Mahtowa. As her hobby was working with flowers, she had numerous houseplants. During the summer, she had many potted plants and flower beds. Kathleen always will be remembered for her loving and compassionate nature. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles "Bud" of Mahtowa; children Ronnie of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Sharon (Philip) Nelson of Cambridge, Minn., Gloria (Doug) Soukkala and Chuck (Pam), both of Mahtowa; a sister, Dorothy (Mike) Hood of Carlton; a brother, John (Ellen) Hecker of Barnum; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in Northland Funeral Home, Mahtowa. Visitation continues Tuesday from noon until the 1 p.m. service in Salem Lutheran Church, Mahtowa. Spring interment in Mount Salem cemetery.
Kenneth Bernard Hendrickson
Kenneth Bernard Hendrickson, 74, of French River died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice after a two-year battle with myelofibrosis.
He was born Oct. 31, 1926, to homesteaders Einar and Freda Hendrickson and lived in the home on Ryan Road that he was brought home to as a newborn. He was a 1944 graduate of Clover Valley High School and a Navy veteran of World War II, serving aboard the D.E. Lough. His employment included the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway in Two Harbors, St. Louis County School District and Lake County School District 381 (North Shore Elementary School) from which he retired in 1988. Farming was a great part of Ken's life, and his interests included dairy, beef cattle and sheep. He married
Helen Silander Nov. 15, 1947, and together they raised four children.
He was a lifelong member of French River Lutheran Church and was very active in the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ethel Jacobson; and a son-in-law, Donald Byerly.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Helen; children Christine Byerly of Frederic, Wis., Daniel of Alaska and French River and Peter (Lou Ann) and Katie (David) Edblom, both of French River; a brother, Harold (Ione), of Burnsville, Minn.; a sister, the Rev. Helen Haag, of the Union of South Africa; grandchildren Sarah (Mike) Funk, of Luck, Wis., Daniel Byerly of Kansas City, Mo., Adam (Beth) Hendrickson and Alyssa Hendrickson, both of French River, and Matthew, Rachel, Andrew and Elsa Edblom, all of French River; great-grandchildren Jackie, Amy and Tyler Funk and Nicholas Hendrickson; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family sends many thanks for the kind and capable care at SMDC and the hospice program; also for the prayers, visits and encouragement from family and friends that made Ken's last days meaningful.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in French River Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials to French River Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or donor's choice are appreciated. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.
Daniel J. Schultz III
Daniel J. Schultz III, 28, of Woodbury, Minn., formerly of Virginia died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001.
He was born Dec. 8, 1972, in Virginia to Daniel J. and Beverly (Beaudette) Schultz. He attended Marquette Elementary School and graduated from Virginia Roosevelt Secondary School in 1991. He attended Mesabi Community College and graduated in 1996 from the University of Minnesota Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering with honor. He had been employed by IBM in Rochester, Minn., and recently had begun employment with Cargill Inc. in Minnetonka, Minn. He was an avid outdoorsman and had worked hard to develop his future home site on Pelican Lake near Orr.
He is survived by his parents, Daniel and Beverly Schultz; sisters Shelly and Betsy of Virginia; paternal grandparents Daniel and Helmi Schultz of Baraga, Mich.; uncles and aunts Robert and Gloria Nankervis of Mountain Iron, Jesse and Charlotte Gerulli of Leonidas, Minn., and Cyril and Pat Beaudette of Eveleth; numerous other relatives in Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Colorado; and many friends including special friends Blaine Rinnell, Paul and Mark Kauppi, Brent Carlson, Joe Erjavec, Jeral Markovich, Ryan Haraden, Jeff Cerar and Dana Reed.
Dan was a generous and loving person, a sincere friend and will be sadly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service today in Bauman-Cron, A Bauman Family Funeral Home, Virginia, and 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Virginia, with the Rev. Donald August Fleetwood
Donald A. Fleetwood, 81, of Virginia died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay.
He was born July 29, 1919, in Wakefield, Neb., to Charles and Lillie Angie (Olson) Fleetwood. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Pacific Arena from September 1942 to November 1945. He married
Donna Whitney Feb. 25, 1951, in Coleridge, Neb. He was an active member of the First Covenant Church in Virginia where he was an usher and a trustee. He farmed in Nebraska and later was a 23-year employee of the Minnesota Department of Transportation in Virginia, retiring in May 1982. He enjoyed going to Army reunions, having coffee at McDonald's, helping people and yardwork. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Harold; and a sister, Adeline.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, of Virginia; children Doreen (Gary) Wallace of Duluth, Dennis (Tracy) Fleetwood of Cook and their children, Shawnee of Minneapolis and Philip (fiancee Mary Schmitke) of Hibbing, Dawn (Daniel) Isaacson of Mountain Iron and their children Amy, Brian and Cathy of Virginia, and Darcy (Mark) Norha of Honolulu and their son, Tyler; a niece, Alvina (Robert) Powell; nephews Alger (Patty) Nelson, Arnold (Pam) Nelson and Arvid (Margie) Nelson.

Blanche L. (Laney) Smith
Blanche L. (Laney) Smith, 80, of Grand Rapids, formerly of the Bovey area died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Born July 23, 1920, in Pelican Rapids, Minn., she was the daughter of Vern and Sarah (Nelson) Laney. She lived most of her life in the Bovey area, attended Greenway schools, and was a member of the Grand Rapids Eagles Auxiliary.
Her parents, Vern and Sara Laney; a daughter, Joan Moore; brothers Gerald, Bob and Raymond; and sisters Grace, Wilma Best, and Betty Lou Mahan preceded her in death.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy Jean (David) Castle of rural Bovey; sons William Raymond Pressly Sr. of Clarks Grove, Minn., Richard James (Cass) Pressly of Ebbyville, S.C., and Steven Michael (Gretchen) Horan of Belvidere, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers Donald (Rita) Laney and Jerry Laney, both of Grand Rapids; sisters Laura (Al) Garner of Grand Rapids, Grace Badga of Modesto, Calif., and Dorothy Crosser of Bigfork; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Monday and continuing 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday, all in Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine, the Rev. Rick Stapleton officiating. Interment in Lakeview cemetery, Coleraine.

Ernest Lucente, 81, of Chisholm died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in Heritage Manor Health Care Center, Chisholm.
Survivors include his wife Beverly J.; children Sandra (Thomas) Cianni, Robert Lucente, Jerry (Susan) Lucente; seven grandchildren; a brother, Frederick Lucente; special aunt, Rose Trombly; numerous nephews and nieces.

Sydney T. Faulkner
Sydney T. Faulkner, 61, of Pengilly died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Born Nov. 26, 1939, in Greenway Township, he was the son of Thomas and Irene (Norgrant) Faulkner. He grew up and lived most of his life in the Pengilly area, attended Nashwauk schools, and was an Air Force veteran. Sydney and Jewell Sletten were married
March 31, 1962, in Minneapolis. He was a heavy equipment operator and maintenance mechanic for Hanna Mining and National Steel, retiring in 1996 with 31 1/2 years of service.
His parents, Thomas and Irene Faulkner; and sisters, Eleanor Pottach and Mabel LaDoux preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Jewell; a son, Sydney (Deanne) Faulkner Jr. of Pengilly; a daughter, Gail Faulkner of Hibbing; two granddaughters, Colleen Faulkner of Plant City, Fla., and Stephanie Faulkner of Nashwauk; six sisters, Ann Pickar of Sebeka, Minn., Gladys Leen of Pengilly, Lois (Ed) Mooradian of Schenectady, N.Y., Nyline (Farrell) Scroggins of Apache Junction, Ariz., Viola Dye of Grantsburg, Wis., and Charlotte (Robert) Hilden of Calumet; and many nieces and nephews.

Edwin Allen Whitney
Edwin Allen Whitney, 90, of St. Paul, formerly of Edina, Minn., and Brimson passed away Friday, Feb. 9, 2001.
Edwin retired from MSI Insurance Co. as senior vice president of public relations in 1972. From 1939 to 1953, he was director of education at Central Co-operative Wholesale in Superior.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie, and his son, Robert.
Edwin is survived by his daughter, Barbara (Robert) Wasko; grandchildren Suzanne (John) Weston, Steven (Kristi) Wasko, Pauline (John) Rongitsch and Jacqueline and Michael Whitney; and five great-grandchildren.

Beth Lundblad Norman
Beth Lundblad Norman, 31, of Paris, Tenn., died of leukemia Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Beth was born Jan. 9, 1970, in Minneapolis to Karen Lundblad Bates of Big Lake, Minn., and the late John Paul Lundblad Jr. She was a stepdaughter of Bruce Bates of Big Lake.
Beth is survived by her husband, Andrew Norman, of Paris; a son, Nicholas Andrew Norman; a daughter, Dallas Michelle Norman; triplet sister Carrie Erhlich, of Duluth; triplet brother, Dr. Peter Lundblad, of Mililani, Hawaii; sisters Ann Oakes of Duluth and Susan Patton of Minneapolis; a brother, Warren Lundblad, of Springfield, Va.; and her grandmother, Geneva Martenson, of Minneapolis.
