Elsie (Rahja) Hatinen
Elsie (Rahja) Hatinen, 84, of Cloquet passed quietly through death into life everlasting Sunday, March 4, 2001, in St. Mary's/Duluth Clinic Hospice Inpatient Unit, Duluth.
She was born May 9, 1916, in Floodwood, to Leander and Anna (Savo) Rahja. She was a 1934 graduate of Floodwood High School. Elsie married Wairo Jalmer Hatinen Nov. 29, 1941, in Hartford, Conn. She was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cloquet.

Her family and especially children were very important to her. She had a wonderful ability to make friends and she treasured each one of her close friendships. She believed that there were educational lessons to be leaned from everything in God's world from the beautiful star constellations in the heavens, all of which she could identify, down to the smallest growing plant.

She appreciated the beauty of nature and life and loved to share everything with everybody. She enjoyed reading, cooking and traveling because it was such a wonderful learning experience.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Waino on Dec. 22, 1965; a son, Wayne in 1989; and her siblings, Hulda Hackley, Emil Rahja, John Rahja, Signe Kemi and Eino Rahja.

Elsie is survived by daughters Marie (Kevin) Coyne of Pleasant Valley, N.Y., and Evelyn (Rudy) Koski of Duluth; grandchildren Thomas Coyne of Las Vegas, Christine Coyne of Pleasant Valley, Douglas Koski of Duluth and Donald Koski of Woodbury, Minn.; great-grandsons, Keith Koski of Brainerd, Kody Koski, and twins Matthew and Lukas Koski, all of Duluth; and a special niece, Carol Kemi Hicks; and her family of Stillwater, Minn.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cloquet. Interment in Maple Grove cemetery, Cloquet. Following Elsie's wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cloquet Educational Foundation, SMDC Hospice Inpatient Unit or a charity of your choice. Arrangements by Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th St., Cloquet.

Solvay Borghild Ronning
Solvay B. Ronning, 78, Silver Bay died Monday, March 5, 2001, in the Minnesota Veterans Home, Silver Bay.
She was born Dec. 21, 1922, to Otto and Hilda Olson in Beaver Bay. She was a lifelong resident of the Beaver Bay-Silver Bay area and was a homemaker through the years. She was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay and its ladies circle, VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Sons of Norway. She enjoyed cooking, baking, garage sales, flea markets, shell picking in Florida, berry picking and bingo. Her family and grandchildren were very important to her.

Solvay was preceded in death by parents; first husband Howard Koski in 1944; her second husband, Kermit Mattson in 1975; a grandson, Kermit Mattson in 1982; and sisters Cora, Ann and Agnes.

She is survived by her husband, Norman; sons Edward (Jenny Stevens) Mattson and Martin (Diane) Mattson, both of Silver Bay; daughters Sonja Appling of Beaver Bay, Sharon (Howard) Nopola of Beaver Bay, Kathleen (Dan) Collins of Humbird, Wis., Kirstin (Pat) Murray of Virdin, Manitoba and Margy (Tom) Porte of Beaver Bay; a brother, Carl (Dora) Sannes Two Harbors; sisters Camilla DeCramer of Kewaunee, Wis., and Hazel Keup of Two Rivers, Wis.; 27 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Service: 1 p.m. Wednesday in Sychar Lutheran Church, Silver Bay. Burial in Sawtooth Mountain cemetery, Beaver Bay Township, Minn. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.

Isabelle J. Tyler
Isabelle J. Tyler, 91, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center, Grand Rapids.
She is survived by a sister and a niece.
Memorial service will be held in the spring. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Josephine Mashuga-Penkusky
Josephine Mashuga-Penkusky, 83, of Gilbert died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Arrowhead Health Care Senior Living Center, Eveleth.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Thursday in Range Funeral Home, Virginia.

Hilda M. Fox
Hilda M. Fox, 94, of Cook, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Cook Hospital.
She was born Hilda Marie Makela on Dec. 15, 1906, in Elmer Township, Minn., the daughter of Eli and Albertina (Mettala) Makela. She grew up and attended school in Elmer Township. Hilda was united in marriage to Wayne Stenbeck in Hibbing on June 26, 1927, then moved to Cook in 1928.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook, and its Martha Circle. She also belonged to the Cook Senior Citizens and the former Cook American Legion Auxiliary. Her husband, Wayne, died on March 11, 1969. She later married George Fox in Cook on Dec. 20, 1973. Hilda loved flowers and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and fishing. She was a very generous, hospitable and patient person. She cherished her children and grandchildren, and made all their friends feel welcome. Her home always had "room for one more."

She is preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne Stenbeck on March 11, 1969; her second husband, George Fox on June 25, 1980; daughter Dorothy Whiteside in 1994; grandson Martin Reichel in 1974; brothers Emil, Walter and Einar Makela; sisters Bertha Barber and Sylvia Polla; and son-in-law Richard "Dick" Reichel in 1994.

She is survived by son Stanley (Mary Leah) Stenbeck of Cook; daughter Shirley Reichel (Arnie) Ojanen of Cook; brother Edwin (Eileen) Makela of Meadowlands; sister Esther Heglund of Cook; grandchildren Kathryn (John) O'Keeffe, Sandra Bialke (Ray) Pinkerton, Frederick (Kirsten) Reichel, Loretta (David) Rankila and Ann Katzenberger; numerous great-grandchildren; great-great-granddaughter Marley Bialke; and many others who called her grandma, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Cook, with the Rev. Marcus Hess officiating. Spring interment will be in Cook Community cemetery. Arrangements are by Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook.

June E. Rankila
June E. Rankila, 76, of Cook died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in Cook Hospital.
She was born June 26, 1924, in Detroit, then for 12 years lived in Cleveland. She moved to Alango, where she graduated from high school in 1942. She was united in marriage to Paul E. Rankila in Virginia Dec. 28, 1946. They then settled in Linden Grove Township near Cook, where she had since resided. June was a homemaker, was employed for a time in the former Hill's Christmas Tree Factory in Cook and for many years was a nurse's aide in Cook Hospital and Nursing Home.

June enjoyed helping others and dedicated much time to volunteer work. She was a member of Cook VFW Auxiliary and Cook Hospital Auxiliary. Some of her other special hobbies were baking, gardening and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul on Nov. 6, 1992; an infant daughter, Junay; an infant son; a sister, Maj. Mae V. Wilson in 1980; and a brother, William Wilson, who died in the Korean War in 1952.

June is survived by a son, David (Loretta) of Cook; grandchildren DeeAnn (Daniel "D.J.") McClain, Shanda (Rodney) Anderson and Danielle (fiancee Matt Drozdek) Rankila, all of Duluth, and Kaylin Rankila of Cook; great-grandchildren Cameron and Paige McClain, and Emma and Ethan Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gathering of family and friends: 6-8 p.m. today in Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook. Service 1 p.m. Wednesday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Cook, the Rev. Marcus Hess officiating. Spring interment in Cook Community cemetery.

Eric O. Long
Eric O. Long, 87, of Cook died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in Cook Nursing Home.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Aune; a son, Leon (Katy) of Cook; a daughter, Paulette (Ron) Rosenlund of Battle Ground, Wash.; sisters Mary Toivari of Eveleth and Eva Williams of Albuquerque, N.M.; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Friday in Mlaker Funeral Home, Cook, the Rev. Harold Homola officiating. Interment in Cook Community cemetery.

Wilber R. Littler
Wilber R. Littler, 85, of Nashwauk died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in the University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
He is survived by a son, Robert (Jean); daughters Barbara (Gregory) Walker and Shelley (Leon) Rasche; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in First Baptist Church, Hibbing. Burial in Nashwauk cemetery.

Winton Larson
Winton Larson, 87, of Deer River died Sunday, March 4, 2001, in Deer River.
Service: 1 p.m. Saturday in Carroll Funeral Home, Deer River.

William C. Hudson
William C. Hudson, 73, of Aitkin died Saturday, March 3, 2001, in his home.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday in St. James Catholic Church, Father Patrick Coyle and the Rev. Roland Ritter officiating. Arrangements by Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home, Aitkin.

Peter Richard Brose
Peter Richard Brose, 51, of Cloquet went home to God Thursday, March 1, 2001, in his home.
Peter was born Dec. 17, 1949, in Lincoln, England, to Richard F. Jr. and Jean (Clelland) Brose. He attended Duluth Cathedral High School and graduated in 1968. He enlisted in the Marine Corps on Oct. 15, 1968. He served in the Vietnam War, where he earned the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal with device, Rifle Sharpshooters Badge, Vietnam Service medal and Combat Action ribbon. After Vietnam, he worked for the Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway for approximately 20 years. He was currently employed with Cap-Trico in Cloquet.

Peter loved life and most of all his wife, children and family.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard F. Brose Jr.

Peter is survived by his wife, Tricia of Cloquet; sons James W. and Benjamin J. Brose; a daughter, Susan J. Brose; his mother, Jean Brose; sisters JoAnne (Ross) Lasky, Susan (Fred Schneider) Brose and Jane (Ricci) Minotte; three nieces; three nephews; and his former wife, Pamela Koivisto, all of the Duluth area; his loving pets, Pumpkin, Sylvester and Kirby; and many friends.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. memorial Mass on March 10 in Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Cloquet. The Rev. Kenton Sailstad officiating. Arrangements by Nelson Funeral Care, Cloquet.

Earl P. Burnson
Earl P. Burnson, 83, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Leisure Hills Care Center.
He is survived by his children, Barbara (Dan) Warrington of Pine River; Kelly Bergstrom of Jacksonville, Fla., and Bryan (Laurie) Burnson of Grand Rapids; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Graveside services will be held in Olivet cemetery, Deer River, in spring. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, (218) 326-4000.
