Beatrice M. Ryan
Beatrice M. Ryan, 90, of Grand Rapids died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center.
She lived in Grand Manor from 1987 until 2000.
A memorial gathering for friends and family 2-4 p.m. Wednesday with a 3 p.m. service of remembrance in Libbey Funeral Home Chapel. Arrangements by Libbey Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, (218) 326-4000.

Albert John Kosola
Albert John Kosola, 89, of Britt died Sunday, April 8, 2001. in University Medical Center-Mesabi, Hibbing.
He is survived by a sister, Helen Danielson of Chisholm; and numerous nephews and nieces.
No services at Albert's request. Arrangements by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Chisholm.

Lempy E. Hachey
Lempy E. Hachey, 88, longtime Marble resident, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center, Grand Rapids.
Born Feb. 1, 1913, in Tri-Mountain, Mich., she was the daughter of Charles and Hilda (Kosonen) Tervo. A 1932 graduate of Greenway High School, she had lived in Blackberry and Bovey prior to moving to Marble in 1938. Lempy and Lyle F. Hachey were married in Marble on June 21, 1938. She was a devoted homemaker and had worked in the Bovey Bottling Shop, Itasa County, and had been an Avon representative since 1956.

Her spirit enlightened all that knew her. Lempy will be remembered for the mischievous twinkle in her eye, her disarming candor and her total disdain for pretense. A more righteous Finlander the world will never know.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Lyle.

Survivors include her sons, William of Grand Rapids and Robert of Marble; and grandchildren Ben, Jon, Valera, Mariya, Matthew and Shane.
Memorial tribute service: noon-2 p.m. Saturday, April 21, in the Peterson Funeral Chapel, Coleraine.

George L. Streu
Centenarian
George L. Streu, 101, of Warba died Sunday, April 8, 2001.
He is survived by a son, Kenneth (Beatrice); a daughter, Jean (Leonard) Vaughan; a sister, Lillian Benson; five grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids. The Rev. Daniel M. Domke officiating. Burial in First Lutheran cemetery, Glencoe, Minn. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Phillip A. Nelson
Phillip A. Nelson, 80, of Biwabik died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home in Duluth, following an extensive illness.
He was born Sept. 12, 1920, to Carl and Olive Nelson in Crosby. He lived most of his life on the Iron Range. He graduated from Crosby-Ironton High School in 1938 and was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea. He married Priscilla Jean Wahlstrom in 1947 in Grand Rapids. He worked for Lerch Brothers as an ore analyst for 25 years and a lab supervisor for Eveleth Taconite for 20 years, retiring in 1980.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carl M.; a sister, Lois VanKleek; an infant brother, Malcolm Vernon; and an infant granddaughter, Betsy Jane Brotherton.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters Susan (Peter) Marczak of Antigo, Wis., Diane J. Rauschenfels of Proctor and Jill (Larry) Brotherton of Aliso Viego, Calif.; a brother Donald (Dede) of Hibbing; sisters Evelyn (Ken) Johnson of Deerwood, Minn., and Elaine (George) Herbst of Eden Prairie, Minn.; and grandchildren Michelle (Nathan) Fields of Valparaiso, Ind., Brian Marczak, Christopher and Andrew Rauschenfels, and Kate, Phillip and Melissa Brotherton.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday, April 20, in Bell Brothers Chapel. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Jonathan Scot Rowe
Forestry instructor
Jonathan Scot Rowe, 46, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Itasca Medical Center because of an accident while teaching a forestry class in Grand Rapids High School.

He was born Dec. 28, 1954, in Gaylord, Minn., to Herbert and Frances (Melinsky) Rowe. He married Christel Haynes on July 16, 1983, in Nashwauk Lutheran Church in Nashwauk. Their daughters are Kathryn (Katie) and Alyson, at home, and honorary daughter, Nina Becker in Switzerland.

Jon attended public schools in Howard Lake, Rochester and graduated from Hibbing High School. He graduated from Hibbing Community College, attended the University of Minnesota Duluth and graduated from the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus with a bachelor's degree in forestry. Later, he earned his agricultural education degree from the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus. In 1994 he was awarded his master's degree in education from the Arrowhead University System.

Jon began teaching agriculture classes at Montevideo High School in 1980. He then moved to Grand Rapids in 1986, where he had taught natural resources, forestry, practical forestry, water resources, horticulture and related courses up until the present. He coached many teams of young people over the years for Future Foresters Of Minnesota, many of which competed at the state level. He pioneered the development and delivery of natural resources teaching curriculum nationwide.

He received many grants and awards for his teaching achievements, including being honored as Minnesota Forest Industries State Forest Educator of the Year, grades 9-12, in 1999.

He was an active member of St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, serving as president of the congregation as well as being involved in numerous committees and singing in the men's choir. He was an instrumental leader, promoting stewardship of natural resources by teaching students how to sample and evaluate water quality in the Mississippi Headwaters Organization. In 1996 he led an exchange team to Russia that spread awareness of resource stewardship by launching river water sampling and testing programs. Jon received the Headwaters Heritage Award in 1991. Last fall, the Grand Rapids River Watch awarded him a commendation for his service to the organization. He was active in Wabana Chain of Lakes organization for which he served as president, vice president and member of the advisory board.

He was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, friend and teacher, and will be dearly missed by those who loved him. He would wish his legacy to be continued by those who he has taught, loved and served.

Alice E. Bowman
Alice E. Bowman, 87, of Hibbing and formerly of Mizpah, Minn., died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at her home in an Alternative Senior Living Residence in Hibbing.
She was born Dec. 11, 1913, in Mizpah, the daughter of Rasmus and Christine (Gregersen) Larsen. She married Milton Bowman Nov. 23, 1933, in Mizpah. Alice was a longtime resident of the Mizpah-Northome area and was employed by the Northome School District as a cook and custodian from 1950 until her retirement in 1979.

She was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Mizpah and later the Hope Lutheran Church in Northome. She enjoyed gardening and was very creative and skilled in handwork, especially crocheting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton; a sister, Mildred (Carl) Nelson of Little Falls, Minn.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Alice is survived by a son, Larry (Patt) Bowman of Hibbing; a brother, Roger (Pat) Larsen of Bemidji; a sister-in-law, Leola "Lee" Heffron of Hibbing; a grandson, Lee (Stacy) Bowman of Coleraine; and a great-great grandson, Max Bowman.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday in Pilgrim's Chapel of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hibbing. Pastor Erik Holleque officiating. Spring inurnment in Mizpah cemetery, Mizpah. Diane E. Waldon
Diane E. Waldon, 69, of Deer River died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in her home.
Visitation: 6 until the 7 p.m. service today in Jesse Lake Lutheran Church, Jessie Lake, Minn.

Hazel E. Haack
Centenarian
Hazel E. Haack, 102, of Two Harbors died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, in Lake View Home, Two Harbors.
She was born Dec. 11, 1898, to Frank and Eva (Sigler) Holmes in Urbana, Ill. She moved to Two Harbors when she was 4 years old and attended school there. She married Henry Haack on March 31, 1939.

Hazel was a homemaker through the years and a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Vasa Lodge. She was also a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary and Silver Creek Ladies Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Arthur Freeberg; her second husband, Henry; sons James and Donald Freeberg; and grandchildren Ron, Mike and Dale.

She is survived by a daughter, Cleora Hendrickson of Two Harbors; a granddaughter, Lori Pierce; nine great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Service 11 a.m. Friday in Cavallin Funeral Home, Two Harbors.

Richard E. Josephson
Richard E. Josephson, 72, of Milaca, Minn., died Monday, April 9, 2001.
He is survived by his best friend and partner of 10 years, Eileen Firkus; two sons; two stepsons; three daughters; three stepdaughters; a brother; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several step grandchildren.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 am. service Saturday in Koop Funeral Home, Crosby. Burial in Bay Lake Township cemetery.
