Gertrude "Gert" Hancock
Gertrude "Gert" Hancock, 79, a longtime resident of Superior's East End area died Saturday, March 24, 2001, in her home.
She is survived by her sons, John (Pat) and Steve (Darlene); daughters Janice (Reno) Berg and Jean (George) Oesterreich; a sister, Francie (Leonard) Dubuque; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial: 10:30 a.m. today in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Eileen Marie (Pettit) Nelson
Eileen Marie (Pettit) Nelson, 76, a longtime resident of Duluth and more recently of Amnicon Lake, Wis., died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital, Duluth.
She was born May 9, 1924, in Superior to Clarence and Mary (Leach) Pettit. She attended the former Superior Cathedral High School and married Marvin H. Nelson of South Range on June 13, 1942.

Mrs. Nelson was a longtime active member of Duluth Cathedral and St. William's Catholic Church in the Pattison Park area. She was also a member of Tri-Lakes Civic Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Lynn Pettit.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Marvin; daughters Rosemarie (John) Helling of Philadelphia, Pamela Rae (Bruce) Nelson Sommer of New York, Peggy Nelson of Chicago and Robin (Rick Mills) Johnson of Duluth; sons Marvin Jr. of Florida, Richard (Sheryl) of Detroit and Steven (Melanie) of Woodbury, Minn.; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins at 5 p.m. today with 6:30 p.m. wake prayers in Downs Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. William's Catholic Church. Father Ronald Olson as celebrant. Interment in Evergreen cemetery, Solon Springs.

Ero "Eric" Jokinen
Ero "Eric" Jokinen, 85, of Superior died Monday, March 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
He was born in Toivola, Minn., Feb. 3, 1916 and was a resident of Superior for the past 60 years.

Mr. Jokinen had worked for the former Midland Cooperative and Land O'Lakes Inc., for 37 years until his retirement as a warehouseman in 1978.

He was an Army veteran of four years, serving in World War II and spent 14 months in the European Theater of Operations. He received battle stars for Rhineland, Ardennes and Central European Campaign. He also received the Bronze Star medal for valor.

He was a life member of the former Henry S. Blomberg VFW Post 847 in Superior, now known as VFW Post 1091 and a former member of the Teamsters Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Aina (Larva) Jokinen; and brothers Albo and Einar Jokinen.

He is survived by his wife, Helga and a son, Dennis, both of Superior; sisters Elsa (Jack) Dunkle of Ormond Beach, Fla., Eileen Hill of San Diego, and Ellen Powers of Santee Calif.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a special friend, Sandy Pederson of Superior.
Visitation begins 5 p.m. Friday. Service at 11 a.m. Saturday in Downs Funeral Home. Interment in Lakeside cemetery. Military rites accorded by VFW Post 1091.

Donald A. Lancour
Donald A. Lancour, 69, of South Highway P, Poplar, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, in his residence.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Tullberg); a son, Scott; daughters Dona (Melvin) Pearson, Denise (Jack) Narow, Deanna (Chris) Wacholz and Linda Moore (Jerry Colby); eight grandchildren; four brothers; and three sisters.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in Downs Funeral Home, Superior.

June L. Martinson
June L. Martinson, 79, of Superior died Sunday, July 29, 2001.
She is survived by sons Roy D. Martinson and Randy (Jane) Martinson, both of Superior; a granddaugher, Tracy Martinson; a sister, Agnes Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.
Private family services are scheduled with the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Burial in Graceland cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the Billings Park Civic Association in June's name.

Elaine C. Rawn
Elaine C. Rawn, 85, longtime East End Superior resident, died Friday, June 22, 2001.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Rawn; daughters Diane (Robert) Rothery, Nancy Willette, Mary (Ron) Ahlf and Kathleen Rawn; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial Mass: 11 a.m. Friday in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment in St. Francis cemetery. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

CALVIN B. "CAL" DeSCHANE
Calvin B. "Cal" DeSchane, 46, of Superior died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, in Superior following a lengthy illness.
He was born Feb. 5, 1955, in Riverside, Calif., to Donald and Patricia (Haley) DeSchane. He graduated from Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College with a machine tool degree. He was formerly employed as a machinist for 10 years with ABC Rail. He was a member of the Boilermakers Union Local 117. He married Shirley (Berthiaume) Olson on Nov. 13, 1987, in Duluth and would have celebrated 14 years of marriage.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Darla (John) Todd of Arizona and Haley DeSchane of Superior; stepsons Nathan (Heather) Olson of Arizona and Chad Olson of Superior; a grandson, John; his parents, Patricia and David Quigley of Arizona and Donald DeSchane of Washburn; a brother, Dale DeSchane of Arkansas; sisters Janet (Ruban) Aquirre of California and Kim Daur of Washburn; stepbrothers David and Rodney Quigley, both of California; stepsisters Candy McCarty of California and Sandy Quigley of Idaho; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Henry W. Kari
Area auto dealer
Henry W. Kari, 87, a lifelong Superior resident died Friday, June 22, 2001, in his home.
Henry was born Aug. 7, 1913, in Superior to Edwin and Hilda (Lahti) Kari. The automobile business was always Henry's life but in the late 1920s Henry with his father, Edwin, and a brother, Ray, started repairing bicycles. In 1933, they built a repair shop at Sixth and Cumming with an extra outside ramp and pit. Henry graduated from Central High School that year. In 1937, Henry went to a Michigan trade school to learn welding and body work. Henry then met Henry Ford who wanted him to stay and work for him. Henry returned to Superior in 1939 and Kari's became a Studebaker dealer. In 1940 and during World War II, Henry went to work and became one of the youngest welders at Bulter Shipyard in Superior. Over the years, car companies came and went at Kari's. They have handled Studebaker, Packard, International Harvester light duty trucks, Simca, Sunbeam, AMC, Jeep and Toyota. Up until recently, Henry worked six days a week all his life and always enjoyed it and the people he met.

He married Anna Rank on Sept. 28, 1941, and would have celebrated 60 years of marriage this September. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, past member of Business Improvement District (BID), past member of the Chamber, and one of the original and current members of the Studebaker Drivers Club; and member of Wisconsin Auto Dealers Association.

Henry loved to bowl, loved his cabin and family but his full time job and hobby has always been the car business.

Henry is survived by his wife, Anna; sons James Kari and Wayne (Toni) Kari, all of Superior; grandchildren Chris, Ryan, Tim, Tiffany and Marissa Kari; and nieces and nephews.
Visitation: begins 5 p.m. Tuesday in William Downs-Lesage Funeral Home, Superior, continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday in Christ Lutheran Church, the Rev. Tim Ludwig officiating. Interment in Greenwood cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Henry's grandchildren, Chris, Ryan, Tim, Tiffany and Marissa. Honorary pallbearers will be all employees of Kari Toyota Jeep. Memorials may be made to Henry's family to establish a scholarship fund at Superior Senior High School in Henry's name or to Christ Lutheran Church.

Serine N. Peterson
Serine N. Peterson, 100, of Superior died Thursday, June 21, 2001, in Southdale Health Care Services.
Serine is survived by sons Henry (Merle) and Norman (Ailsa) Peterson; a daughter, Mildred Hinton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandsons.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Concordia Lutheran Church, Superior. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

GERALDINE "GERRY" MICKELSON McNAMARA
Geraldine "Gerry" Mickelson McNamara, 84, of Tempe, Ariz., formerly of Superior died peacefully Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in Corona, Calif.
Born April 29, 1917, to Martin and Anna (Peterson) Mickelson, she was a graduate of Superior Central High School. She married Russell McNamara on May 12, 1941. She worked for the former CO-OP Warehouse and later for the Superior School Board at Superior Senior High School. She and her husband, Russell, retired in Tempe, Ariz., where she lived for the last 20 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family at her summer cabin at Lake Pokegama in Minong, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Anna Mickelson; her husband, Russell McNamara; a daughter, Patricia McFaul; and a brother, Eugene Mickelson.

Survivors include a son, Michael McNamara of Duluth; granddaughters Amie (Jon) Kinne of Corona, Calif., Lori (Bill) Offutt of Ashland, Wis., and Colleen (Cliff) Knettel of Superior; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Virginia Tinseth of Whittier, Calif., and Gloria Linday of Albany, Ore.; many cousins and friends.
MEMORIAL SERVICE: 1 p.m. Friday in Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior, Pastor David Eckman officiating.

Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

THOMAS A. HIGGINS SR.
Thomas A. Higgins Sr., 88, of North 22nd Street died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001.
Surviving are a son, Thomas A. (Mary) Higgins Jr.; daughters Margaret (David) Hoadley and Mary Jo (David) LaValley; a sister; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Cathedral of Christ the King. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
