Lavaun Jeanette Helland
Lavaun Jeanette (Olson) Helland, 74, died Friday, June 22, 2001, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Lavaun was born Sept. 26, 1926, in Superior to Carl and Laura Olson. She graduated from Central High School and Duluth Business University. She lived most of her life in the Superior and Duluth area. For the past three years, Lavaun was a resident of Fort Worth.

Lavaun is survived by her husband of 53 years, M.J. "Bud" Helland; her daughters, Jeanette (Tim) Knutson and Diane Helland, both of Fort Worth and Audrey (John) Malone of Eagan, Minn.; grandchildren Shelby Helland, Carl and Ingrid Knutson, and Meghan, Bree and Shannon Malone; and a sister, Beatrice (Klaas) Terpstra of San Diego.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel at Concordia Lutheran Church, Superior. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the Alzheimer's Association, (800) 272-3900.

Marian L. Wepfer
Marian L. Wepfer, 84, of the Town of Hayward, passed into eternal life at sunset on Saturday, June 23, 2001, at the Hayward Area Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Duluth, during a blizzard on May 15, 1917, the daughter of Ole and Esther Winther.

Marian grew up in Duluth and Superior. She graduated from Superior Central High School in 1935 and received her bachelor of science degree from Superior State Teachers College in 1939. She did considerable graduate work beyond her degree. Mrs. Wepfer touched many lives in her 33 years of teaching in Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota, including an elementary school principalship in Menominee, Mich. She spent the last 22 years of her career teaching third grade in Hermantown, from where she retired in 1981.

Marian was an optimistic, generous, "young" person. She was an avid reader and enjoyed poetry and music. She loved being by water, especially at her home on Round Lake.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Aldor in 1999; her parents; her older sister, Betty Dauplaise; her nephew, Johnny Dauplaise; in-laws; and friends.

Marian is survived by her daughters, Kay and Anita of Hayward, to whom she was a very precious and loving mother. She is also survived by her younger sister, Eunice Doschadis, niece Nancy and nephew Larry, all of Waterloo, Wis.; her nephew, Bob Dauplaise of Albuquerque, N.M.; her brother-in-law, Arthur Wepfer; nieces and nephews of Milwaukee, Wis.; and good friends.
Following cremation, a private family service was held with Pastor Paul Yoder of the Hayward United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements were by the Anderson-Nathan Funeral Home, Hayward.

Mary Foote Marsh
Mary Foote Marsh, 66, of Superior died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001.
She is survived by her son, Chris (Jane) Lindblad; a daughter, Dana Lindblad; a brother, James (Dessa) Foote; sisters Sally Christman and Carol Evered; three grandsons; several nieces, nephews and cousins; sisters-in-law Rose Foote, Bernice Weide and Toni Ann Foote; and many friends.
Graveside service: 1:30 p.m. Friday in Greenwood cemetery. Downs Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements.

John W. "Jack" McLean
John W. "Jack" McLean, 83, of Superior died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001.
Jack is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; a son, Michael (Holly) McLean; a daughter, Barbara (Greg) Syring; grandchildren Derek Van Damme, Stephanie (Steve) Foster, and Kelly and Kristine McLean; and a great-grandchild, Lucas Foster.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Friday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Interment in St. Francis cemetery.

Marlow E. Hill
Marlow E. Hill, 61, former Wentworth resident, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001, in Minneapolis.
Marlow is survived by a sister, Maxine Ligman of Superior, and a brother, Dennis (Arlene) Hill of Wentworth.
Visitation: 2 until the 3 p.m. service Sunday in Mission Covenant Church, Poplar. Interment noon Monday in Pineglade cemetery, Oulu. Arrangements by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Elsie K. Malm
Elsie K. Malm, 95, of North 28th Street, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, in her residence.
She was born Sept. 6, 1905, in Traryd, Sweden, and was a U.S. resident since age 18. She lived in Superior since 1995.

Mrs. Malm was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her granddaughter, Sandra Schuck of Superior, whom Elsie legally adopted in 1960 following the death of Elsie's daughter and Sandra's mother, Marcia Ann Malm. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Kim (Jamie) Olson of Superior, Jason Schuck of Wayzata, Minn., and Penny Schuck of North St. Paul, Minn.; two great-granddaughters, Allison and Katelin Olson; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Downs Funeral Home and from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Saturday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church. Interment in Winter cemetery with a graveside service at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Pastor Robert H. Stoskoph officiating.

Mary H. Birch
Mary H. Birch, 88, a lifelong Superior resident, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001.
She is survived by sons Raymond Birch and Dennis (Patricia) Birch; a daughter, Barbara (James) Erickson; a sister, Katherine Seagren; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins 5 p.m. Thursday with a scripture service at 7 p.m. in William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Lorraine G. Wright
Lorraine G. Wright, 89, formerly of Banks Avenue and Hammond Avenue, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Aug. 19, 1911, in Superior and was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Mrs. Wright owned and operated the former Telegram Beauty Studio for many years. Her husband, Vern, was Douglas County Register of Deeds, and when he died, she was appointed Register of Deeds to complete his term of office.

She also had been employed as a beautician by the former House of Charm.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vern, in 1968; two brothers, Ralph and Gene Pederson; and a sister, Harriet Wiseman.

Surviving are a son, Tom H. (Darlene) Wright of Duluth; daughters Caren (Al) Gagne and Jane (Jack) Krisak, both of Superior; five grandchildren, Karen and Kristine Miernicki, John Gagne, and Carrie and Scott Krisak; a sister, Lois Pedersenof Superior; brothers Kenneth (Carol) Pederson of Wauwatosa, Wis., and Donald (Carol) Pederson of Sun City, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: after 5 p.m. Wednesday in Downs Funeral Home and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Concordia Lutheran Church. Interment in Greenwood cemetery. The Rev. Scott Ludford officiating. Pallbearers will be Scott Krisak, John Gagne, Jim, Joe and Alan Pederson, and Polly Laverdiere.

John Michael Gerzic
John Michael Gerzic, 91, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Gerzic; a son, Jim Gerzic; a daughter, Kathleen Ann (Jack) Woods; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Louis Gerzic; a sister, Margaret "Marge" Ray Bogart; and several nieces, nephews, and other family.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial today in Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home.

Dorothy F. LaJoie
Dorothy F. LaJoie, 90, of New York Avenue died Thursday, July 26, 2001.
She is survived by a stepdaughter, Coleen Aird of Superior; a nephew, Edmund (Joan) Safford of Duluth; two grandnieces; three great-grandnieces; and a great-grandnephew.
Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial in St. Francis cemetery, Superior. Downs Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

DeHewitt "Bunny" L. Thoreson
DeHewitt "Bunny" L. Thoreson, 81, a longtime Superior resident died Thursday, July 26, 2001.
Surviving are daughters Esther (Richard) Hahn, Joan (David) Hauck and Kathleen (Marlo) Swan; a son, Thomas (Pat) O'Dell; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace L. Hewitt; lifelong friend, Deanna Glanville; and several nieces and nephews.
No service. William Downs-LeSage Funeral Home is assisting the family.

Melvin J. Severson
Melvin J. Severson, 71, of Superior died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001.
Survivors include his wife Shirley; a son, Scott (Brenda); a daughter, Tracy (John) Ruppe; grandchildren Hunter Ruppe and Brett Severson; a sister, Doris (Mike) King; nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Interment in Hillside cemetery, Orienta, Wis. with military honors.
