ANTHONY F. NATALIE
Anthony F. Natalie, 75, of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, of arteriosclerotic vascular disease.
He was a state of California employee, a musician and barber. Anthony was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Anthony is survived by his wife, Marie; son Michael; daughter Mavis Norington; granddaughter McKenzie; and brothers Frank of Duluth and Michael of San Jose, Calif.
SERVICES were held Nov. 5, 2001, in Pacific View Mortuary, New Port Beach, Calif.
THOMAS W. BENSON
Thomas W. Benson, 75, of White Bear Lake, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2001.
Thomas was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Thomas' parents were educators in the Duluth school system. Tom was president of his junior and senior class and was voted outstanding student in his senior class. He was a 1943 graduate of Duluth Central and attended the University of Minnesota Duluth. He was the owner of North Shore Hook & Slice Clinic Golf Driving Range and was a golf and sports enthusiast.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth (Ringsred) and Walter Benson; his wife, Patricia; and a brother Walter H. "Ben."
Thomas is survived by his daughters, Pam (Robert) Ashenmacher of Knife River and Jill (Kevin) Madden of Mahtomedi, Minn.; grandchildren Hallie, William, Thomas and George Ashenmacher, and Michael and Carly Madden; sister Janice (John) Shields of Lake Forest, Ill.; and special friend Helen Dreis of White Bear Lake.
Dad, you touched so many lives with your kindness, generosity and happy spirit. You will be dearly missed and will forever live in our hearts. Love is stronger than death.
VISITATION: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Honsa Family Funeral Home, 2460 E. County Road E, White Bear Lake. Memorials preferred.
THEO LAURANE BROOKS
Theo Laurane Brooks, 80, of Duluth and Barnes passed away Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, in Franciscan Health Care Center, Duluth, with her family at her side.
Theo was born July 1, 1921, to Carl John and Bessie Catherine (Mandery) Chillquist in Brainerd, Minn. Theo graduated from Brainerd High School in 1939. After high school, Theo worked for Montgomery Wards in retail sales in Brainerd. Theo married
her childhood sweetheart Gordon Brooks on Sept. 17, 1944, in Denver and moved to Duluth that same year. She worked at JC Penney Co. and later was a credit manager for Maurices.
Theo was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was interested in the pursuits, work and families of others. She never let an opportunity pass to say a kind word. She enjoyed doing handwork and crafts.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a past matron of the Glen Avon Chapter of Duluth. She was a member and volunteer of the American Red Cross Disaster Team, member of the VFW Auxillary 8329 in Barnes, and a member of Barnes Community Church and its homemaker club.
Theo was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Bessie Chillquist; her sister, Carol Josephine Larson; and a granddaughter, Jenny Rebecca Davis.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Gordon; daughters Catherine (Ted) Main of Naperville, Ill., and Carol Jean Brooks and Susan (Rudy) Wiitanen, both of Duluth; a son, Barry (Ann) Brooks of Duluth; a sister, Alice (LeRoy) Kuehling of Barnes; a brother, C. Loren (Dorothy) Chillquist of Spokane, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Crawford Chapel. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in Barnes Community Church. Because Theo was a proud member of the Minnesota American Red Cross Disaster Team, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Barnes Community Church or American Red Cross Disaster Team. LLOYD J. DUNCAN
Lloyd J. Duncan, 66, of Hermantown Road passed away at home Monday, Sept. 17, 2001, after a long struggle with emphysema.
He was born in Cloquet and attended school there. Lloyd had worked for many years as a longshoreman until his retirement five years ago.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his brother, Carl Anderson; and his infant grandson, Derek Duncan.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia of Hermantown; a daughter, Beth Duncan of Proctor; sons Terry Duncan of Colorado, David Duncan of Minnesota, Todd Duncan of Colorado and Patrick Duncan of Texas; a sister, Karen of Colorado; brothers Donald of Montana and Thomas of Virginia; an aunt, Geraldine Caster, who lives with Lloyd and Patricia; and six grandchildren.
Private serviceswill be held at a later date. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.
Blanche K. Jacobsen
Blanche K. Jacobsen, 93, of East St. Marie Street died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
Blanche was born June 16, 1908, in Duluth to Riley and Nellie Baker. She graduated from Denfeld High School and then went to work for the Fitger's Brewing Co. She became a bookkeeper for Arrowhead Furniture Store in Superior and retired from Superior Memorial Hospital, where, as bookkeeper, she was the first paid employee of the hospital when it started up. Blanche loved playing bridge at the Pines with her friends; she loved cooking and baking and loved to shop.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, LeRoy; and brothers Dale and Bob.
Blanche is survived by a son, Roy (Linda) of Potomac, Va.; daughters Linda (Don) Gagne of Markham, Laurie Haugh of Superior; brothers Allan (Marilyn) Baker of Lake Havasu, Ariz., Rollin Baker of Minneapolis, Harry Baker of Duluth; grandchildren Kevin and Dean Gagne, Chuck (Brenda) Haugh, Sue (Paul) Savory, Jennifer and Ethan Jacobsen-Shenkman, Ericka Jacobsen; great-grandchildren Baley Gagne, Jill and Troy Haugh, Ariel Shenkman and Megan Jacobsen; and a special friend, Marlys Jacobsen. Also a very special thanks to Sam Basara who made her past year such a joy.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Dougherty Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private. Burial in Greenwood cemetery, Superior.
Geraldine "Jerry" Anna
Katherine Scott Cardascio
Geraldine "Jerry" Anna Katherine Scott Cardascio, 89, of East Superior Street died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center of a stroke.
She was born in Chicago on Feb. 11, 1912 to John and Anna (Sparks) Scott. Geraldine worked as an office clerk for Allied Radio in Chicago. She moved to California in 1977 and in 1979, moved to Duluth to live near her daughter. She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Jerry loved people and was socially gregarious. She was the "Queen" of the "one-liners."
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James L., who died in 1958.
Survivors include her son, Leonard (Dolores) Cardascio of Grayslake, Ill.; daughters Angeline Agate of Lompoc, Calif., Mary Noel Fitzgerald of Duluth and Anne Cardascio (Jim Fisher) of Wheeling, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m., with 7 p.m. wake prayers Friday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Saturday in Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Charles H. Kettelhut
Charles H. Kettelhut of Mitchell Circle died Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001, in his residence.
A lifelong Duluth resident, he was a former employee of Modern Distributors and later Franklin Foods. He was also a member of Teamsters Local 346 and volunteered as a member of Lester Park/Lakeside Neighborhood Crime Watch.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Elsie Kettelhut; a brother, Donald; and a sister, Delores Morgando.
He is survived by his wife, Diane; sons Dennis of Eagan, Minn., Steve (Cindy), Mark (Trina), and Judson Crist (Michelle), all of Duluth; a daughter, Kim (Craig) Hinrichs of Zimmerman, Minn.; brothers Gerald (Carol), and David (Alva) Kettelhut, both of Duluth, and LaWayne (Pat) Kettelhut of Underwood, N.D.; sister Ardith (Wallace) Carey; sister-in-law Mary Kettelhut of Duluth; and grandchildren Michael, Katie, Colton, Paige, Skyler, Auston, Dylan and Rylie.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in Johnson Mortuary. Interment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
Norman Howard Korby
Norman Howard Korby, 74, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at his beloved Island Lake.
He was born March 8, 1927, in Cloquet to Ellen (Manisto) and Alfred Korby. After high school, Norman served in the Army from 1946 until the end of World War II. The next 47 years he operated heavy equipment, working for the Operating Engineers Local 49.
Norman was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Ellen Korby; his wife, Margaret Ann (Gulbransen) in 1994; his brother, Leroy; his sister, Daisey Andrews; and his granddaughter, Heidi Griffith.
He is survived by his sisters, Doris VanCalbergh and Gloria Farren; sons Marlin and Ronald; and daughter Darlene Griffith.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service today in Johnson Mortuary. Graveside services will follow at Park Hill cemetery.
Opal V. Frykman
Opal V. Frykman, 89, formerly of West Superior Street died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Carl J. and Emma (Sandberg) Frykman. The family lived in Brookings, S.D., before moving to Duluth in 1927. Opal was a 1931 graduate of Denfeld High School and a graduate of the Young & Hursh Business College.
She was a member of Lincoln Park (formerly Temple) Baptist Church, its Circle 2 and the Young at Heart senior's group.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers Albert, Axel, Hjalmer and Carl Frykman.
She is survived by six nieces and five nephews.
