ROY JOHN BECKMAN
Roy John Beckman, 98, of West Skyline Parkway died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, in his residence.
He was born Sept. 20, 1903, to Martin and Binna Beckman in Two Harbors. He was active in the Shrine in South Dakota and Minneapolis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Ruth; and a son, Stephen.

He is survived by sons Peter (Ellen) Beckman of Carefree, Ariz., and M. Tom (Rita) Beckman of Hovland, Minn; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Travis "Trapper" Robert Nevala
Travis "Trapper" Robert Nevala, 26, of Haines Road died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001.
Travis was born in Minneapolis and lived in Duluth for 25 years. Travis graduated from Duluth Central High School and attended Lake Superior College. He loved to hunt, fish, snow board, bowl and throw darts.

Travis was preceded in death by his grandfather, Kenneth Bee.

Surviving are his mother Jean M. (Steve) Sumner and father, Lyle R. (Deborah) of Duluth; brothers Christopher Plagemann, Jonathon Plagemann of Duluth and Jason (Diane) Sumner of Proctor; sisters Leslie (Mark) Hanna of Duluth, Kris (Bill) Fulford of Burnsville, Minn., Amy Henriksen of St. Paul and Megan Plagemann of Duluth; maternal grandmother, Patricia Bee of Rockport, Texas; and paternal grandparents, Robert and Deloris "Dolly" Nevala of Embarrass; aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Travis will be missed by all who knew him.
Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Theresa A. (Jelen-Peabody) Fena
Theresa A. (Jelen-Peabody) Fena, 92, of Midway Avenue, Proctor passed away Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in her home.
Born April 21, 1909, to Joseph and Francis Jelen in Cass Lake, she grew up in Remer. She worked for 25 years at various Duluth stores, including as a baker at Glass Block, an inspector at Western Electric and Garon's Knitting Mill. She married Angelo A. Fena May 10, 1965, in Duluth, and he passed away in 1996. She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Ignace Jelen and Michael Jelen; and a stepson, Robert Fena.

She is survived by daughters Twylla Sundin of Proctor, Delila Lukkasson of Duluth and Gladys Senarighi of Eveleth; a son, Lyle Peabody of Duluth; stepsons William Fena of Wakasha, Wis., Donald Fena of McGregor and Gary Fena of Spring Lake Park, Minn.; sisters Sarah Freeman, Pearl Bell and Helen Reidlon; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday in Bell Brothers Chapel with wake prayers at 6 p.m. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. funeral Mass Monday in St. Rose Catholic Church, the Rev. Father James Bissonette officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials to St. Rose School would be appreciated.

MARIE A. NELSON
Marie A. Nelson, 93, of Red Wing, Minn., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at home surrounded by her family.
She was born April 15, 1908, in Red Wing to Bruce P. and Alice A. (Erickson) Canfield. She was a graduate of Floodwood High School and Superior State Teachers College, Superior. She married Ralph W. Nelson Sr., June 8, 1935, in Duluth. She taught elementary school for 26 years, retiring from Hermantown Elementary in 1973.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years; her son, Ralph W. (Alice) Nelson Jr.; her daughter, Marilyn A. (Herbert E., deceased) Potswald; grandchildren Thomas F. Potswald, Eric C. (Gina) Nelson, Ellen J. (John) Snoeyenbos, Christopher E. (Colleen) Potswald and Amy M. (James) Delameter; and four great-grandchildren.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE will be held at a later date.

MARY T. TIMPONE
Mary T. Timpone, 79, of Jefferson Street died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in her home.
Mary was born Nov. 1, 1921, in Duluth to Michael and Rose (Mainella) Bussa. She was a graduate of Central High School and attended Duluth Business University. Mary had worked for many years at Bussa Clothing.

She was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, Duluth Women's Club, Altrusa Club, and a member and past president of the Duluth Blue Line Club.

Her husband, Andrew, died in 1995.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Rosann (Jack) Clark of North Branch, Mich., and her grandchildren, David Andrew Clark and Christine Marie Clark.
VISITATION: 4-7 p.m. Sunday with wake prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Service 10 a.m. Monday in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Burial in Calvary cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Marlette Middle School Library, c/o Rosann Clark, 5140 North Branch Road, North Branch, MI 48461, or the Duluth Women's Club. REGINA MARIE TRETTEL
Regina Marie Trettel, 91, of Midway Road died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Duluth on Sept. 19, 1910, to Alexander and Della (Homicke) Kwiecinski. Mrs. Trettel was a homemaker and lifelong member of St. Mary Star of the Sea.

Survivors include her husband, Albert L. Trettel; a daughter, Patricia (Joseph) Maisuk of Duluth; sisters Dolores Lappy and Jennie Olson, both of Duluth; granddaughters Carol (John) Grund of Pine City, Minn., and Sherri Maisuk of Duluth; and a great-grandson, Peter Michael Grund.
VISITATION: 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Burial in the Polish Catholic cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

SUSAN D. SMITH
Susan D. Smith, 48, of Industrial Road, Saginaw died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Cloquet.
She was born in Duluth and after graduating from East High School, joined the Evangelism Corps, where she met her husband, Ken. They served together in Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. They were married in 1974 and attended Vancouver Bible College in British Columbia together. After Bible College, they moved to Nebraska, where they lived until moving back to Duluth in 1983. In 1993, they moved to Saginaw.

Susan worked as a home care provider and had belonged to the Arrowhead Rug Crafters. She was a former member of North Shore Baptist Church. Susan enjoyed camping, being in the outdoors, and being by Lake Superior. She collected agates and miniature keepsakes. She wrote and enjoyed poetry, and was a very loving and thoughtful person.

She is survived by her husband and best friend, Ken; sons Nathan and Neal, both of Duluth, and Nicholas who lives at home; her parents, Robert and Peggy Hill of Duluth; brothers Bruce (Cathy) Hill of Duluth, W. David Hill of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Norman (Sue) Hill of Minneapolis; and her special nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Service at 2 p.m. Monday in North Shore Baptist Church. The family prefers memorials. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

EMERY G. JOHNSON
Emery G. Johnson, 88, of Harvey Street died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
He was born July 13, 1913, in Duluth to Alex and Anna (Nelson) Johnson. He was a 1932 graduate of Denfeld High School. He married Mary A. Feran on July 11, 1953, in Duluth. He was employed as a shipping clerk at Northern Electric Supply Co., for many years, retiring in 1974. As a young man, he had worked for the railroad and suffered an injury that limited his activities; however, he enjoyed going to Country Lanes to watch his brother, Clint, bowl and made many friends there over the years. He also had a group of friends with whom he met daily for coffee at the Miller Hill Mall. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

Emery was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Hildur Mickelson; and brothers William and Clarence Johnson.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Mary; a brother, Clinton Johnson of Duluth; and many nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Bethany Lutheran Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Ruth Naomi Sundland, 101, formerly of London Road died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.
Ruth was born in Duluth to William H. and Rose (Ritschl) Luhm on April 25, 1900. Ruth loved to ice skate and won first place ribbons in speed skating competitions in Duluth. She played the piano, knitted, crocheted, sewed and was known for her baking of French desserts. She was the caregiver of her parents.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard in 1982; brothers Fred M., Caleb, Jerry, Jim, Ezra and Joshua Luhm; and sisters Eva Leland, Esther Goulet and Mary Zwiers.

Ruth is survived by her son, Richard C. "Dick" (Mary) of Duluth; her daughter, Claire J. Linnell of Duluth; brothers Ben Luhm of Columbia Heights, Minn., and Phillip Luhm of Seattle; grandchildren Shelly, Kelly, David, Terrie, Debbie, Patti, Stacie, Rick and Steve; 12 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank the Benedictine Health Center for the care they gave Ruth and a special thank you to grandchildren Stacie, Rich and Steve, and Ruth's friend, Darlene.
VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. today and from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

MILDRED "MILLIE" SCHWEITZER
Mildred "Millie" Schweitzer, 82, of Proctor passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in her home.
She was born Dec. 21, 1918, in Duluth to Erick and Selma Carlson. She was a waitress in Duluth: She started at the 5th Avenue Hotel and Woolworth's, then went to Murray's in Minneapolis. Millie also worked as a waitress at Creightons in Florida until she moved to Duluth in 1988. She was voted one of the top 10 waitresses in the country.

Millie was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran in Proctor. She also belonged to the 20th Century Club and Women's Institute.

Millie was preceded in death by her husband, John.

She is survived by a son, Gerald "Crash" (Shirley) Carlson of Proctor; grandchildren Marcia (Wally) DuPuis of Cloquet, Mark (Nancy) Carlson of Proctor, and Marlin and Kim Carlson of Esko; great-grandchildren Sheri (Chris) Holshouser, Angela, Joe, Ashley, Dave, Adam, Heather, Matthew, Chauntel and Jeremiah Carlson; great-great-grandchildren Camron and Casey Holshouser; her sister, Inga Matuschak of Forest Lake, Minn.; a nephew, Ron Matuschak of Duluth; and a niece, Carol Pearson of Forest Lake.
VISITATION: 5-8 p.m. Sunday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service at noon Monday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Proctor. Inurnment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
