Darryl E. Ziegler
Darryl E. Ziegler, 66, of Grand Rapids died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at his home on Little Wabana Lake, surrounded by his family.
He was born March 7, 1935, in Sandstone to Louis and Amy (Holmes) Ziegler and graduated from Sandstone High School in 1952. He served in the Army from 1953 until 1955 and was united in marriage to Mary Langenbrunner in 1958 in Cloquet. He was a 35-year resident of Duluth, where he worked for St. Germain's Paint and Glass for 32 years. He then went to work as a Realtor with Century 21 in Duluth until his retirement in 1993. He had lived in the Grand Rapids area since 1993. He was a member of the Cloquet American Legion, Post 262 and Teamsters Local 346.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lucile Ziegler; and an infant sister.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughters Michelle (William) Cone of Grand Rapids and Lisa (Kyle) Veech of Hermantown; sons Andy (Ginger Butterworth) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and William of Grand Rapids; sisters Helen Delger of New Brighton, Minn., and Laurel (Bill) Pagel of Duluth; a brother, Hart (Judy) of Duluth; and grandchildren William, Amy, Kelsey, Michael, Brett, Max, Alex, Elliot and Taylor.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Sunday with a wake prayer service at 5 p.m. in Rowe Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Grand Rapids, the Rev. Father Thomas Radaich officiating. Arrangements by Rowe Funeral Home, Grand Rapids.

Leitha D. "Lee" Pearson
Leitha D. "Lee" Pearson, 81, of Oneida Street died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born Sept. 16, 1919, to Ernest and Esther (Hanson) Wallin in Duluth. Lee graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1939 and married Philip Pearson on Oct. 6, 1945, in Duluth. Lee worked at Diamond Tool and at Aftenro Home as a cook. She was a former member of Bethel Baptist Church where she had been the church secretary and sang in the choir.

Lee was a member of Lakeview Covenant Church. She loved to bake, cook, needlepoint and in earlier years played the violin. Lee was always pleasant and cheerful, her humor and caring for others will be sadly missed. She was a special and gracious wife, mother and grandmother, whose love will always be embedded in our hearts.

She was preceded in death by brothers Kenneth and Ronald Wallin.

Lee is survived by her husband, Philip; sons Kenneth (Sharon) of Puyallup, Wash., Dennis of Minneapolis and Richard of Minneapolis; grandchildren Ben, Heather, Allison and Tom; a great-granddaughter, Sophie; and a sister, Judy (Al) Jacobson of Puyallup.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Monday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Tuesday in Lakeview Covenant Church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Dorothy J. Rouleau
Dorothy J. Rouleau, 81, of West Fourth Street died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor with her family at her side, following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Duluth to John J. and Evelyn (Skoglund) Olson. She was a graduate of Central High School. Dorothy worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell. She was a homemaker during the years she raised her son and then returned to work as a telephone operator at St. Luke's hospital, working there for 17 years until she retired.

She was an active member of St. James Catholic Church and its St. Margaret's Guild. Among other church activities, she always participated in making pasties for the church fundraisers. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and the auxiliaries of the American Legion Post 71 and VFW Post 6320 in West Duluth. She was active in events at the West Duluth Senior Center. She enjoyed golfing, flower gardening and working in her yard. Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a devoted and caring friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Betty Wilson and Doris Stitt; and brothers Roger, Elton and George Olson.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest; a son, Bruce (Pamela) of Duluth; a brother, James (Julia) Olson of Oceanside, Calif.; grandchildren Mark Rouleau and Denise Rouleau, both of Duluth; a great-granddaughter, Bailie Rouleau; a sister-in-law, Faith Olson of McAllen, Texas; a brother-in-law, Bill Wilson of Edmonds, Wash.; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with a wake prayer service at 7 p.m. in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. James Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. James Catholic School.

MaryAnn M. Pettersen
MaryAnn M. Pettersen, 86, of 101st Avenue West died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, following a four-month battle with cancer in Lake Haven Manor, with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Superior to Ignace and Veronica (Sterneski Bumbel) Grenewich. She had been a Duluth resident since age 4. MaryAnn was a homemaker and had attended Morgan Park School. She was a member of West Duluth American Legion Post 71 Auxiliary. She married Reidar Pettersen Dec. 2, 1950, in Duluth and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last December in Salt Lake City. MaryAnn's love of gardening and flowers ranked at the top of things she enjoyed, along with the love she gave to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Henry Nygard in 1949; sisters Ann Vogt and Helen Howard; a brother, Peter Grenewich.

Survivors include her husband, Reidar; daughters Darlene (Doug) Cary of Sandy, Utah, and Joan (Richard) Erickson of Blaine, Minn.; a sister, Agnes Lundstrom of Duluth; grandchildren Pamela (Jeff) Snauwaert of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Craig Paszak of Denver and Todd (Stacy) Erickson of Blaine; great-grandchildren Jessica and Jacob Paszak, Will and Hunter Snauwaert and Samuel Erickson; and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Karen Erickson and Carol Putnam for all of their help, love and support during Mom's illness. Also, special thanks for the care given to Mom by St. Luke's Hospice team and Lake Haven Manor.

Wilbert "Bill" Zimpel
Wilbert "Bill" Zimpel, 86, of Duluth died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, while on vacation in Wisconsin.
Wilbert was born to William and Inga Zimpel on Feb. 23, 1915, in Duluth. Bill retired in 1980 after 50 years in the labor force. His various occupations included ice hauling, factory work, trucking, hardware retail and wholesale selling. His retirement was filled with hobbies of traveling, camping, fishing, hunting, golf, listening to music, and quiet time with his wife, Alice. He built and raced stock cars at the Proctor Race Way. Bill was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Moose Lodge 1478, and a founding member of the cribbage league at the Kom-On-Inn bar.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, LuVerne; an infant son; his parents; three sisters and a brother.

Surviving are his wife, Alice; a sister, Dorothy Adolphson; daughters Karol (Ron) Woldengen of North St. Paul, Minn., Barbara (Harry) Bergson of Superior, Berta (Jerry) Menor, Patty Carlson, Bev Ledin, Elizabeth (Mike) Ossanna, and son, Roger, all of Duluth; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and one on the way; other family and many friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service 1 p.m. Tuesday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Ave., Duluth. Burial in Oneota cemetery.

Susann R. Rivers
Susann R. Rivers, 64, of Eau Claire, Wis., formerly of Duluth passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Luther Hospital, Eau Claire.
She was born April 8, 1937, to Arthur and Lorraine (Ruff) Rivers in Bloomer, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, JoAnn Everlen; and a brother, Albert Rivers.

She is survived by a sister, Tomette "Tomi" Rivers of Bloomer; a brother, John (Rita) Rivers of Duluth; several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Friends may call: Noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Schriver Funeral Chapel, Bloomer, conducted by E.J. Jordahl. Private burial in St. Paul's Catholic cemetery, Bloomer.

Lydia A. Winquist
Lydia A. Winquist, 96, of Fourth Street in Proctor died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
She was born in Thomson Township, Minn., to Oscar and Wappu (Roiha) Korhonen. She lived in Proctor for 44 years.

Lydia was preceded in death by three husbands, Emil Eliason, Waino Jacobson and Felix E. Winquist; her parents; brothers Oscar, Arvid and Charles Korhonen; a sister, Ailie Salmi; and daughters Frances Munroe and Gladys Heinitz.

Surviving are daughters Inez (Peter) Rindal and Ethel (Thomas) Pensak of Duluth and Pearl (William) Cole of Peru, Ill.; sons Richard (Dianne) Jacobson of Cloquet and F. Floyd (Shigeko) Winquist of Kingston, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Interment in Perch Lake cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Viola May (Rodgers) (VanBuskirk) Krueger
Viola May (Rodgers) (VanBuskirk) Krueger, 77, of Birchwood Drive, Hermantown, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, in her home.
She was born Oct. 5, 1923, in Waterville, Minn., and had been a Proctor, Esko and Hermantown resident since 1957. Viola had worked as a nurse's aide and health care worker at Lakeshore Lutheran Home for many years, until retirement in 1993. Since 1993, she worked as a home health care provider. She married Orville William VanBuskirk in 1940 in LeSueur, Minn., and following his death she married Harlow "Curly" Krueger in 1971 in Duluth.

Viola was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and Proctor Women of the Moose. She enjoyed cooking, the outdoors, fishing and socializing with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands Orville William VanBuskirk, in 1968, and Harlow "Curly" Krueger, in 1979; and a son, Vance VanBuskirk, in 2001.

Survivors include a son, Steve (Liz) VanBuskirk of Kingsland, Ga.; daughter-in-law, Darlene VanBuskirk of Cornucopia; a brother, Eugene Rodgers; sisters Ellen Studer and Ruby Saros; grandchildren David (Destiny) VanBuskirk of Cornucopia, Dennis (Cherie) VanBuskirk of Superior, Jennifer Cline and Christa Eichelsdorffer, both of Virginia Beach, Va., and Jason VanBuskirk of Virginia; great-grandchildren Joshua and Jacob VanBuskirk; and two unborn great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel and continues from noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Kolden Funeral Home, Le Sueur, Minn. John Lawrence Peyton
Environmentalist, author and artist
John Lawrence Peyton, 94, of The Pines III, St. Marie Street, formerly of Proctor, died peacefully Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, in his residence.
He was born in Proctor to Hamilton and Olive Peyton. He attended Duluth schools and graduated from Philips Exeter Academy and Yale University.

He was an active environmentalist, noted author, and well-known regional artist He was a supporter of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and a member of the St. Louis County and Minnesota Historical societies. He and his wife, Fay, moved to the country in the 1930s to paint and write. They raised birds and waterfowl on their Hermantown farm and published the magazine Ducks and Geese. In the 1970s, Mr. Peyton opened the Lake Superior Art Gallery in Duluth and gave art lessons, had art exhibits and sold artwork from his studio. He was a key organizer of the "Stop the Freeway" movement in Duluth, which led to one of the most beautiful stretches of freeway in the United States. Mr. Peyton served as president of the First National Bank of Proctor from 1957 until 1989, and as chairman of the board of directors until 2000.

His first book, "The Stone Canoe, " published in the early 1980s, received the Minnesota Book Award for that year.

He was preceded in death by his son, Hamilton; a brother, Lewis; and an infant sister.

Surviving are his wife, Fay; daughter Beryl Peyton of Duluth; brother Newton (Cecile) of Duluth; grandchildren Kris Sweetnam, Lori Mansell, Lisa Merrell, Tanya Peyton, Todd Peyton, Terry Peyton, Tammy Nguyen, Tina Davis and Tara Bryant; 14 great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Forbes United Methodist Church, Proctor. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials be directed to the Duluth Public Library. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
