David John Simonson
David John Simonson, 61, of East Sixth Street died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in his home after a brief fight with cancer.
He was born in Duluth and graduated in 1958 from Duluth Central High School. David worked for Todd Signs for more than 30 years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. David was special to his family. He enjoyed weekends at his lake place in Wisconsin and sprint car racing.

He was preceded in death by his father Ole J.

Surviving are his mother, Marjorie of Duluth; a brother, Allen L. of Duluth; sisters Joyce A. Anderson of Duluth and Jeanne M. (David) Carlson of Lutz, Fla.; nephews Danny (Patty) Simonson and Bradley Carlson; nieces Michelle Simonson, Susan (David) Danneker, Lyn Anderson and Kristen (Drew) Kimery; and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in Trinity Lutheran Church. Inurnment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Jarvi-Dowd Chapel.

Russell K. Olson
Russell K. Olson, 82, of Ozark Street died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice with his family at his side.
He was born Nov. 5, 1918, in Duluth to Paul and Olga (Linnerud) Olson. He was a 1937 graduate of Denfeld High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II with the Medical Corps in the European theater. He married Lucille Vereecken in November 1941 in Duluth. He was a homebuilder, working with his father in Paul Olson & Sons Construction. He worked for the City of Duluth for many years and retired as the superintendent of building maintenance and street lighting.

He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council several times, once as president, was an usher, a member of the Zion Vikings, and a member and secretary of Zion's Men-in-Mission. Russell was a 60-year member of the Carpenters Union and had served on the board of directors for the Depot. He was a member of Zion's bowling team, enjoyed fishing, was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and enjoyed watching other sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Paul and Donald Olson.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucille; a daughter, Sandra Olson of Minneapolis; sons Russell Jr. of Duluth and Rod (Brenda) of Sandy, Utah; a sister, Muriel Scott of Duluth; grandchildren Dex and Sadie Olson of Sandy, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and continues from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Wednesday in Zion Lutheran Church. Entombment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Zion Lutheran Church.

Francis E. Waln
Francis E. Waln, 86, of Wadena, Minn., died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, in Tri-County Hospital.
He was born Feb. 10, 1915, to Edward J. and Mae Francis (Baun) Waln in Anamoso, Iowa. Francis married Hazel Bryce on Aug. 25, 1939. Francis drove semi-trucks all of his life for different people and companies. At one time, he hauled ice for Monarch Ice Cream and sand and gravel for Becker Sand and Gravel, but most of the time he hauled grain. He also operated a Caterpillar bulldozer. Francis was still driving semis at the age of 84 until his accident.

He enjoyed deer hunting. He was a very kind and gentle person, always willing to help. He will be missed by family and his trucking buddies.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Charles and George; and a great-granddaughter, Thyler Ann.

Francis is survived by his loving wife, Hazel; a daughter, Linda Waln of Wadena; sons Mynard "Mickey" Waln and Myron "Butch" (Gloriann) Waln, both of Wadena; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Waln of Wadena; and a sister, Marge Thurston of Wadena.
Service: 2 p.m. today in Bielema Family Funeral Home, the Rev. Cheryl Williams officiating. Burial in Wadena cemetery. Pallbearers are Keith Waln, Kevin Waln, John Waln, Tom Hahn, Dan Richards, Travis Hahn, Joseph Richards and Brandon Richards. Honorary pallbearers are Danielle Hahn, Justin Richards, Cody Waln, Christopher Waln and Dylan Waln. Arrangements by Bielema Family Funeral Home, 310 Bryant Ave. S.W., Wadena, MN 56482, (218) 631-2934.

Emily Benassi
Emily Benassi, 96, formerly of Duluth died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in Stewartville Care Center, Stewartville, Minn., where she had resided since March 2000.
She was born Aug. 11, 1904, to Richard and Anna Behnke in Buhl. When she was still a child the family moved to Duluth, where she lived most of her life. Mrs. Benassi worked at the Park State Bank in Morgan Park for several years and was later employed by the U.S. Steel Corporation as a cost accountant. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1969, following 10 years of night classes.

Mrs. Benassi was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, on June 2, 1940; three brothers; five sisters; and a grandson.

She is survived by a son, Robert C. (Rita) Benassi of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Florence (Edward) Burleigh of Lafayette, La.; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.

MaryAnn M. Pettersen
MaryAnn M. Pettersen, 86, of 101st Avenue West died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, following a four-month battle with cancer in Lake Haven Manor, with her family by her side.
She was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Superior to Ignace and Veronica (Sterneski Bumbel) Grenewich. She had been a Duluth resident since age 4. MaryAnn was a homemaker and had attended Morgan Park School. She was a member of West Duluth American Legion Post 71 Auxiliary. She married Reidar Pettersen on Dec. 2, 1950, in Duluth and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last December in Salt Lake City. MaryAnn's love of gardening and flowers ranked at the top of things she enjoyed, along with the love she gave to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Henry Nygard in 1949; sisters Ann Vogt and Helen Howard; and a brother, Peter Grenewich.

Survivors include her husband, Reidar; daughters Darlene (Doug) Cary of Sandy, Utah, and Joan (Richard) Erickson of Blaine, Minn.; a sister, Agnes Lundstrom of Duluth; grandchildren Pamela (Jeff) Snauwaert of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Craig Paszak of Denver and Todd (Stacy) Erickson of Blaine; great-grandchildren Jessica and Jacob Paszak, Will and Hunter Snauwaert and Samuel Erickson; and several nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Karen Erickson and Carol Putnam for all of their help, love and support during Mom's illness. Also, special thanks for the care given to Mom by St. Luke's Hospice team and Lake Haven Manor.

Anne Hargrave
Anne Hargrave, 86, of Duluth died Friday, July 27, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Care Center, Duluth.
Anne was born in Dupue, Ill., on Sept. 15, 1914, to Carl and Ann (Tomse) Gerlovich.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger in 1980; her parents; and a sister, Caroline.

Surviving are her brothers, Edward and Albert; and several nieces and nephews.
At Anne's request, there will be no services. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Iris J. Beaudin Renaud
Iris J. Beaudin Renaud, 76, of LaVaque Road, Hermantown, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Cloquet Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Saginaw to Adolph and Hazel Abrahamson on April 4, 1925. She worked for St. Louis County as a switchboard operator at Nopeming and then as a cook at Chris Jensen Nursing Home, retiring in 1985.

She was a former member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Duluth Heights. She was a member of St. Benedict Catholic Church and AARP. She married O. George Renaud on April 15, 1978, in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Howard, Melvin and Norman Abrahamson; and her first husband, Emmett Beaudin in 1970.

Iris is survived by her husband, O. George; a daughter, Susan (Lance) Fleischauer of Lakeland, Minn; a son, Earl (Barb) Beaudin of Duluth; sisters Elna Brown and Phyllis Pearson, both of Duluth; brothers Homer Abrahamson of Carson City, Nev., and Donald (Evelyn) Abrahamson of Cook; grandchildren Steven and Robert Beaudin of Duluth; stepsons Andrew (Debbie) Renaud of Rockford, Ill., and their children, Jason and Trina, and Bob Beaudin of Duluth and his children, Sean, Sheryl, Shelly, Shane and Shannon; a stepdaughter, Jackie (Larry) Morris of Duluth and their children, Karie and Kristie; and many step-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Bell Brothers Chapel with wake prayers at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 1 until the 2 p.m. funeral Mass Monday in St. Benedict Catholic Church, the Rev. Maryann M. Patullo
Maryann M. Patullo, 45, of Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Duluth passed away Friday, July 27, 2001, in Methodist Hospital, St. Louis Park, Minn.
She was a senior administrative assistant for Voyageur Asset Management in Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Nick and Lorraine Patullo; a sister, Paulette; and a brother, Tom.

She is survived by brothers Bradley (Christina) of St. Louis, Mo., and Scott (Susan) of Hermantown; a sister-in-law, Lori Patullo of Ramsey, Minn., a niece, seven nephews; two grandnephews; special friend, Pat Champ; and her beloved cat, Murphy.
Visitation: noon until the 2 p.m. memorial service Sunday in St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Eden Prairie, Minn. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to St. Andrew Lutheran Church.

Theresa M. Benda
Theresa M. Benda, 95, of Duluth died Thursday, July 26, 2001, in Benedictine Health Care Center.
She was born July 18, 1906, to Croce and Filomena Benda in Duluth. Theresa graduated from Duluth Central High School. She worked as a stenographer and bookkeeper for Gilbert and Barker in Minneapolis, Jensen Printing Co. in Chicago, and the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railroad Co. She was an independent woman whose work ethic was the envy of any employer. Through her loyalty, attendance, responsibility and efficiency, she never missed a day of work. Theresa worked for more than 50 years, retiring in the late 1970s. She returned to Duluth in 1993.

Theresa was a member of St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary; and brothers Paul and Robert.

Theresa is survived by her cousins, Ray Garni of Virginia, Paul Garni of Albuquerque, N.M., Anita (Harlan) Stech and their children, Katy, Marcy and Amy, all of Duluth, Susan Benda of Washington, D.C., and Liz Anderson of St. Paul.
Visitation: 10 until the 10:30 a.m. service today in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
