Richard John "Dick" Nephew
Richard John "Dick" Nephew, 75, of South 70th Avenue West, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2001, in his home, surrounded by his family, when the angels came to take him to live in eternity with his wife of more than 50 years and The Father.
He was born Nov. 17, 1925, to Louis and Arla (Lindfors) Nephew. He lived most of his life in Duluth. He was a World War II Navy veteran, serving in the South Pacific aboard the LST 243. He married Bernice Kunkel in September 1948. He retired from U.S. Steel's Duluth Works in 1972 and then went to work for St. Louis County, first as a jailer and then in roads and maintenance. Dick was leader in the Boy Scouts of America, was active as Little League coach for the Far West league, and did volunteer work with the American Red Cross, teaching swimming and first aid. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Louis County Rescue Squad, American Legion Post 71, and the former Holy Cross Catholic Church. He served on the Holy Name Society and several church boards.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Parish and had been very active until recently, serving as an Eucharistic Minister and helping with church and school maintenance.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice, on June 8, 2001; his parents; and brothers George (Jum), Maynard and Donald.

He is survived by his children Dale (Chris) of Duluth, John (Rosi) of Proctor, Mary Beth (Jim) Boynton of Proctor, Katherine (Olli) Rahkola of Esko, Bob (Patty) of Duluth, Paul (Paula) of Proctor and Judy (Jeff) Dieryck of Duluth; a brother, Stewart C. "Dugan" (Arlene) Nephew of Esko; a sister, Darelyn Washburn of Duluth; 16 beautiful grandchildren; three wonderful great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5-7 Sunday with a rosary service at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel. Funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Monday in St. James Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn and the Rev. Father John Golobich officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. West.

Clarence B. Tegeder
Clarence B. Tegeder, 86, of Wildwood Drive, passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice.
He was born Dec. 17, 1914, to William and Hilda Tegeder in Minneapolis. He attended the University of Minnesota prior to serving in the Army during World War II. He married Ruth Brennan on May 26, 1943, in Minneapolis. He joined Prudential as an agent in Minneapolis in 1938. He was named a sales manager in 1947 and was promoted in 1954 to manager of the Fargo district office. He was transferred to head the Duluth office in 1958. He retired in 1974 after 36 years of service.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club and was past president of the Arrowhead Association of the Life Underwriters. Clarence was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed golfing and shore casting on Lake Superior.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Mary Lou (Donald) Wenker of Seattle; a son, Bill of Duluth; grandchildren Sarah and Bryce Wenker of Seattle; a sister, Mary Catherine Chatelaine of Minneapolis; brothers the Rev. Vincent Tegeder of Collegeville, Minn., Roy (Ruth) and William (Mary), both of Sun City, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to Dr. Jeff Nelson and the staff of the Medical Intensive Care Unit and the Hospice Care Unit at St. Mary's Medical Center for their compassionate care.

Ruth L. Kane
Ruth L. Kane, 83, formerly of Ramsey Manor, died Wednesday, June 28, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
She was born Sept. 7, 1917, in Chicago to Frank and Nora Rouse. Ruth grew up and attended school in Chicago. She had been a St. Paul resident before moving to Duluth 28 years ago.

Ruth's true love in life was her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward L. Kane, in 1985; and a brother, Wilbur Rouse.

Survivors include sons Judd (Paula) and George (Becky), both of Duluth; a stepson, Edward L. Jr. (Peggy) of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; grandchildren Mark, Nicole, Steven, Michael, Robert and Joseph Kane, and Jessica (Brian) Kohne; and great-grandchildren Carter, Robert and Alyssa Kane, and Austin Kohne.
A private family service will be held at Oneota cemetery, the Rev. John Napoli officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Philip M. McDonald
Philip M. McDonald, 83, of St. Paul, died Tuesday, June 26, 2001.
Phil served with the Marines in the Philippines and China during World War II. After the war, he earned a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Minnesota and spent the next three decades working for the federal government's Navy Inspection Division, first in Duluth and later in St. Paul.

Phil was known as a man with a mission who worked tirelessly for pedestrian safety, pro-life and the Minnesota Senior Federation. He was a member of the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and past Grand Knight and District Deputy for the past three years. He was a Eucharistic Minister and usher at St. Leo's Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He was the altar person at St. Thomas Chapel in St. Thomas University and led rosaries every Sunday in Catholic churches throughout the area. He was involved with leadership for non-public education marathons. He had earned numerous awards throughout the years for his community service, including the Henri Eisenhauer award for community activities by the Merriam Park Community Council. He was transportation advisor to Highland Park Community Council and member of the University of Minnesota Alumni Legislature Task Force.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 39 years, Mary Kay McDonald, the daughter of Minnesota Secretary of State Joseph Donovan and Mary Donovan; his parents, George and Nora; brothers Tom, Jim and Wilfred; and an infant sister, Helen.

He is survived by his brother, the Rev. Finian McDonald, OSB, St. John's Collegeville; daughters Mary Ann McDonald of St. Paul, Kathryn Mary (Duane) McQuillan of Roseville, Minn., Anne (Jeff) Winkler and Teresa McDonald, both of California; a son, Philip J. McDonald (fiancee Bridget McMahon) of St. Paul; grandsons Jeremy McDonald, K.C. Gleffe and Gage McDonald; and his fiancee, Kathleen G. Knaeble.
Visitation: 4-9 p.m. today in O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home, 575 S. Snelling Ave., St. Paul, (651) 698-0796. Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Leo's Catholic Church, 2055 Bohland Ave., St. Paul. Interment in Resurrection cemetery.

William Mathew Zeleznikar
William Mathew Zeleznikar, 81, of Boulevard Place, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in his home.
William was born in Ely to Jerry and Jennie Kerntz Zeleznikar. He was a graduate of Ely High School and a veteran of the Army, having served in India during World War II. William was a retired electrician, having worked for Arrowhead Electric Company.

William was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Joan Preshiren.

He is survived by his brothers, Jerry Zeleznikar and Joseph Brodnik, both of Duluth.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Saturday in Dougherty Funeral Home. Burial in Calvary cemetery.

Terry Rodrick Kuchenbecker
Terry Rodrick Kuchenbecker, 57, of Duluth died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, in his home.
He was born Aug. 25, 1943, in Duluth to Lorraine and Donald R. Kuchenbecker. Terry grew up in Duluth and attended Denfeld High School. After high school he served four years in the Navy on the U.S.S. Hancock during the Vietnam War.

Until retiring two years ago, Terry was a member of the Local Painters Union 106. He was an avid racing fan and enjoyed spending time with his dogs.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lorraine.

Terry is survived by his wife, Carol; a son, Don; and daughters Terrie "Lynnie" Kuchenbecker and Tonya Kuchenbecker, all of Duluth.
Graveside service: 11 a.m. Thursday at Oneota cemetery, the Rev. Jim Woldhuis officiating. Services entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth.

Lawrence M. Dulinski
Lawrence M. Dulinski, 81, of Abbott Road died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in his home.
Lawrence was born in Duluth on June 4, 1920, to Michael and Josephine (Maleska) Dulinski. He was a graduate of Central High School. Lawrence married Mary Plets on June 21, 1941. He retired from Clyde Iron as a layout man in 1981.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Gnesen, and a member and former fire chief of Gnesen Volunteer Fire Department. He loved the outdoors, spending time deer hunting, fishing, cutting firewood and tending his garden.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Bjonkaas.

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Mary; children Judy (Bob Sirois) McClarey of Duluth, Virginia "Jinny" (Bob) VanGuilder of Duluth, Jerry (Jan) Dulinski of Duluth, and Jacquelyn (Jerry) Fryxell of Knoxville, Tenn., and Hong Kong. He is also survived by his sisters Bridge Bedow of Washington, Angie Kubazewski of Saginaw, Fern Antiel of River Falls, Wis., and Stella Reopelle of Blaine, Minn.; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Dougherty Funeral Home with wake prayer at 7 p.m. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Thursday in St. Joseph's Church, Gnesen. Burial to follow in St. Joseph's cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555.

Mildred A. Larsen
Mildred A. Larsen, 97, of Grand Avenue died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.
She was born April 7, 1904, in Two Harbors to Louis and Carrie (Sonstby) Dahl. A Duluth resident since 1924, she worked at Bridgeman-Russell Creamery for 27 years and at Twin Ports Grocery for 11 years.

She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and its Women's Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters; two brothers; a niece, Louise Schneider in 1999; and her husband, Sidney S. "Snubs" Larsen on Feb. 12, 1983.

Survivors include her nephews Thys (Nan) Johnson of Duluth and Tom Larsen of Port Townsend, Wash.; nieces Karen (Bob) Levine of Sacramento, Calif., and Barb Larsen of Denver, Colo.; cousins Jan Nicholsen of Duluth and Anna Seaberg of Two Harbors; and her special friend, Henry Michelsen of Duluth.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Thursday in Asbury United Methodist Church. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery. Memorials to Asbury United Methodist Church would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
