Gustav "Gus" Joseph Morrison Sr.
Gustav "Gus" Joseph Morrison Sr., 78, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, in Duluth surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Grand Marais (Chippewa City), Minn., to Joseph and Ella Morrison, and was a Duluth resident most of his life. Gus was a World War II veteran serving in Europe. He was a member of Grand Portage Band of Chippewa. He retired from U.S. Steel and Morrison & Sons Construction.

Gus enjoyed golfing, bowling, hunting and his greatest passion of steelhead fishing on the North Shore streams. His favorite fishing spot was known by many as "Gus' Rock" on Lester River.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and sister; his son, Gustav Joseph Jr.; grandson Gustav (Gussiejo) Joseph III; granddaughter Charmaine Marie Pyrlik Lassilla; and two great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Violet Nan; daughters Carolyn Dieter, Michele Wick and Patricia (Larry) De Briyn of Duluth, and Christine Anderson of St. Paul; sons Robert of California, Tim (Arlene) of Duluth, and Tom of Duluth and Cheyenne, Wyo.; and daughter-in-law, JoAnn Morrison of Duluth. He was blessed with many, many grand, great-, and great-great-grandchildren. Gus is also survived by a brother, Norman (Marlene) of Cloquet; a sister, Maxine Morrison of Duluth; and many nephews and nieces.

Gus will be sadly missed by all who knew him as a modest, loving and caring man.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St. Private interment in Park Hill cemetery.

Ronald "Ron" Bruce Barlow Sr.
Ronald "Ron" Bruce Barlow Sr., 62, of East Second Street died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, in his home.
He was born in Aitkin to Russell L. and Theresa N. (Hill). Ron was a longtime resident of Proctor and Duluth. He was a welder for many years and a member of the Air National Guard.

Ron was a member of University United Methodist Church, NRA and United Northern Sportsman. He loved to hunt and paint pictures. He was a craftsman, handyman and a musician. He loved the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are a son, Ronald Jr. of Duluth; daughters Terri Barlow of Minneapolis, Janine (Michael) McGahee of Stapleton, Ga., and Debbie Tector of Martinez, Ga.; a sister, Sharon (Robert) Mickolajak of Cotton; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial service: 3 p.m. Saturday in University United Methodist Church. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery.

Robert Van Horn Jr.
Robert Van Horn Jr., 51, of South 22nd Avenue East died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital.
He was born in New York City. He attended schools in Duluth and had been a member of the U.S. Coast Guard for six years.

He is survived by his father, Robert Van Horn of Hoffman, Minn.; his mother, June Phyllis Van Horn of Duluth; and aunts Adeline Shauer of Hoffman, Minn., and E. Maria Bruneau of Duluth.
Visitation: 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Floyd "Bucky" Kettner
Floyd "Bucky" Kettner, 64, of 89th Ave West passed away Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in St. Luke's hospital after fighting a courageous battle with cancer.
Floyd was known and loved by all throughout the West Duluth community. Bucky married Pat Saulie on Nov. 21, 1959, in Carlton. He served as a bartender at the Rustic Bar for 35 years. He loved the outdoors, including fishing and golfing. His grandchildren were his passion and love in life. Bucky touched the lives of many people.

He will be sadly missed by all. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and love.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Floyd; and his special nephews Benji and Brett Kettner.

He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughters Kris (Scott) Shepherd and Jenna Kettner; his aquired daughter, Brenda Witte; sisters Betty (Eli) Radulavich, Helen ("Bunny") Olson, Delores (Fran) O'Connell; a brother, Ben (Marlene) Kettner; grandchildren Cory, Danielle, Scott, Chantell, and Dylan; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave W.

Hannah Marie Vallie
Hannah Marie Vallie, infant daughter of Theodore L. and Joanna (Pinelle) Vallie of Nashua, N.H., died shortly after birth Tuesday, August 7, 2001, in St. Joseph Hospital, Nashua.
In addition to her parents, Hannah's survivors include brothers Cameron, Brandon and Nicholas Vallie of Nashua; maternal grandparents Edward and Jennie Pinelle of Nashua; paternal grandparents Bob and Donna Swartz, and Dan Vallie, all of Duluth; paternal great-grandmother Ann Vallie of Duluth; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Lawrence Edward "Larry" Linskie
Lawrence Edward "Larry" Linskie, 47, of South 70th Avenue West died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Duluth.
A lifelong Duluth resident, he was born July 15, 1954, to Robert Wayne and Dianne Threse (Joyal) Linskie. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert, on May 28, 1981; a brother, Bob, May 14, 1976; a sister, Connie Rae Linskie, May 20, 1978; and his step-father, Wendell Fiero June 9, 1998.

Survivors include sons Bill Tandler and Josh Linskie and a daughter, Danelle Linskie, all of Superior; his mother, Dianne Fiero of Duluth; brothers Mark and Louis Linskie, both of Duluth; three grandchildren and an unborn grandchild; three step-sisters; and many aunts and uncles.
Visitation: 4 until the 5 p.m. memorial service Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Father Charles Flynn officiating. Inurnment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

William Joseph Rogouski
William Joseph Rogouski, 73, of Duluth died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in his residence.
He was born in Scranton, Pa., and had been a Duluth resident for the past two years.
Services and burial will be in Pennsylvania. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel.

Donald A. Norling
Donald A. Norling, 74, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, David (Diane); a daughter, Karen Fleisher; grandchildren Zachary, Matthew, Jocelyn, Meredith, Quentin and Tegan; and other relatives and friends.
Memorial service: 4 p.m. Saturday in Hope Lutheran Church, 5200 Emerson Ave. N., Minneapolis. Private interment. Arrangements by Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, (763) 537-2333.

Jennie R. Clifford
Jennie R. Clifford, 83, of West Second St., died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was a lifetime resident of Duluth and was loved by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Alfred Kuehnow; her second husband, Louis Clifford; and her dear friend, Ed Roach.

She is survived by her sons John Kuehnow of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Alan Kuehnow of Tulare, Calif., and Paul Kuehnow of Duluth; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Visitation: one hour prior to the 11 a.m. service Friday in Lakeside Baptist Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Odea Arseneau Blakeney
Centenarian
Odea Arseneau Blakeney, 102, formerly of Gateway Towers, died Monday, July 30, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
Odea was born June 10, 1899, in Stillwater, Minn., to Andrew and Diana (Bourdage) Arseneau, and they moved to Duluth when Odea was 3.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea and a former member of St. John's Church. Odea was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and at the Depot.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace W., in 1972; her daughter, Carolyn Cheney, in 1976; and her son, H. Warren Blakeney, in 1994.

Odea is survived by daughters Patricia Nolting of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Peggy Perttula of San Jose, Calif.; her sister, Lydia Olson of Duluth; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and many great-great-grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Friday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Myrtle V. Unden
Myrtle V. Unden, 87, formerly of Duluth, died Thursday, June 28, 2001, in Seaton Northwestern Hospital, Austin, Texas.
She was born Aug. 5, 1913, in Duluth to Werner and Christine (Olson) Hanson. She was a 1931 graduate of Central High School. She worked for the New York Life Insurance Co. for several years.

She married William J. Unden in January 1941 in Duluth. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Trinity Chapter 242 and a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church. She moved to Austin to be near her daughter, Karol, in 1998.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Unden, in November 1987; a daughter, Elaine Fontaine, in April 1997; and brothers Harry, Clarence, George and Richard Hanson.

She is survived by daughters Karol (Wayne) Savola of Austin and Lois (Dennis) Maki of West Palm Beach, Fla.; grandchildren Jill (Sean) Kinch and David Savola, both of Austin, and Michele (Todd) DeGraze and Bryan (Tricia) Fontaine, both of the Green Bay, Wis., area; several great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Elaine Hanson and Dorothy Hanson, both of Duluth; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Salem Lutheran Church, Hermantown. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home.
