The war over and a civilian again, Roger earned his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and worked for Honeywell for 14-plus years before he and his family moved to California. Sister Noella Wappes, OSB
Sister Noella Wappes, OSB, 86, of St. Scholastica Monastery died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at the Monastery.
Sister Noella entered the Duluth Benedictine community in 1931 and professed monastic vows in 1933.

Sister Noella was born Jan. 4, 1915, in Lac du Flambeau, Wis., and spent most of her early life in Cloquet, where she attended Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Grade School. Her secondary education was received at Villa Sancta Scholastica High School, Duluth.

Education courses at the College of St. Scholastica and Duluth Normal Teachers College prepared Sister Noella for a teaching career. As a teacher, Sister served at St. James Children's Home, Duluth; St. Thomas School, International Falls; and Duluth Cathedral Junior High School. Illness forced her to withdraw from active ministry for a period of three years. Sister Noella completed a correspondence program from the American Medical Record Association and received her certification as a registered record administrator. In April 1953, she went to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, where she served as director of the medical record department until 1983. With the advent of advanced technology and the need for greater managerial skills in her field, Sister resigned as director but continued to work in the department until her retirement in 1998. During her 45 years at St. Joseph's, Sister Noella brought holiday joy to many by painting Christmas scenes on the windows of the hospital. This artistry was shared at the Monastery when she returned following her retirement.

Sister Noella held membership in the Minnesota Association of Medical Record Administrators and in the National Association of Medical Administrators. She assisted at the Brainerd Community Soup Kitchen and in the Hospitality House sponsored by St. Joseph Medical Center. She was featured in two articles published in the Brainerd Daily Dispatch, one in 1988 regarding her Christmas window decorating, and the other in 1998, honoring her for her many years of service to the Brainerd community.

Sister Noella was the middle child and only daughter of the seven children born to Walter and Caroline (Stumreiter) Wappes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Walter, John, Robert, Richard and Orville Wappes.
