James J. "Jimmy" Balen
James J. "Jimmy" Balen, 43, of Duluth, formerly of Grand Junction, Colo., died Saturday, May 26, 2001.
He was born July 14, 1957, in Grand Rapids to Robert and Diana (VanWave) Balen. He had been a Duluth resident for most of his life and was a 1975 graduate of Morgan Park High School. Jimmy loved traveling and riding his Harley with his son, Mike, fishing, camping and the mountains. He was known for his witty sense of humor, enjoyed talking to anyone and had a heart of gold.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; grandparents Tillie and James VanWave; and uncles Galen VanWave and Leroy VanWave.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela (Scott) Skogquist of Grand Junction; a son, Michael of Grand Junction; his mother, Diane Balen of Duluth; brothers Bob (Patty) of Elko, Nev., and Dave (Krista) of Duluth, special aunt, Ruby VanWave of Duluth; special cousin, Jodi Mulek of Duluth; a granddaughter, Samantha "Little Bird" of Grand Junction; a niece, Breanna Anderson; a nephew, Austin J. Balen of Duluth; his dog, Chester; and other aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Bell Brothers Chapel where the service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday. His remains will be scattered in various locations in the U.S. that were meaningful to him. Timothy Wayne Wagner
Timothy Wayne Wagner, of Duluth, 44, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice.
He was born Nov. 22, 1956, in St. Paul and lived in Hermantown, Brainerd, Proctor and Duluth. Tim graduated from Proctor High School in 1975, and studied art at University of Wisconsin-Superior where he met his wife of 22 years. He enjoyed a deep, long interest in art, music, and collecting.
Tim worked at St. Luke's Hospital, Great Northern Music Center, and Marshall Hardware, each of which the family would like to thank for their kind support.
Tim was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Wagner.
He is survived by his wife, Doreen; a son, Carl; father, DeWayne Wagner and his wife, Gerrie of Proctor; and a sister, Sandra Wagner of Two Harbors.
Tim's unique perspective and unusual wit will be dearly missed by all.

John Warren McDonnell
John Warren McDonnell, 71, of West Morgan Street died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
He was born in South Dakota Jan. 3, 1930, to Daniel and Maureen (Barnhardt) McDonnell. John was a graduate of Seattle University. He was a United States Air Force veteran, having served during the Korean conflict. On Sept. 9, 1958, he married
Barbara Anne Long in Michigan and together they raised five children. John was employed by Parke-Davis Pharmaceutical for 34 years until his retirement. He was a member of the 242 Yacht Club, past president of the Optimists Club, and past member of Toastmasters. John and his wife of 42 years resided in North Port, Fla., during the winter months.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons Peter (Carri) McDonnell of Dillon, Colo., and James (Kimberly) McDonnell of Duluth; daughters Kathy (James) Murphy of Denver, Colo., Susan (Timothy) Tarr of Appleton, Wis., and Ann (Ron) Ozan of Duluth; 13 grandchildren; and many fish.

Irene Loretta Anderson
Irene Loretta Anderson, 82, formerly of Wabasha Street, Duluth died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in St. Therese Care Center of New Hope.
Irene was born in Duluth May 16, 1919, to Walter and Rose (Adams) Chard. She was a Denfeld High School graduate. She married
Edmund E. Anderson in Duluth and together they raised two children. Irene was employed as a waitress at the Kitchi Gammi Club for more than 10 years. Mrs. Anderson was a very active member of St. John's Catholic Church and its Rosary Society.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edmund (1978); sisters Florence Dieryck and Dorothy Johnson; and a brother, Eugene Chard
Survivors include a son, Lawrence (Mary) Anderson of Fayetteville, Ga.; a daughter, Barbara (Len) Hones of Plymouth, Minn.; and grandchildren Amy, Cory, and Heather.

Florence June Worthing
Florence June Worthing, 75, of Arlington Avenue died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in her home, after an admirable battle with Parkinson's disease.
Florence was born June 20, 1925, in Floodwood to William and Erma Greer. She was a 1943 graduate of Alborn High School. She moved to Duluth after graduation to attend business college. She married
Kenneth J. Worthing on July 17, 1948. Together they raised their four children.
Florence was actively involved in PTA for 23 years, serving as president and on the council. She was a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie and Girl Scout leader for several years. Florence worked at the former Mount Royal Drug and Variety Store. She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Duluth Heights, where she served on the Altar Guild and was a member of the Mary Circle and a former Sunday school teacher.
She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers; a sister; and an infant granddaughter, Chelsea Borud in 1988.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth J.; daughters Janet (Gary) Niemi of Duluth and Kay (Steve) Borud of Grand Marais; sons, Roger (Julia) of Duluth and Ralph (Tina) of Saginaw, Mich.; a sister, Marian Johannessen of Duluth; 14 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
This woman of integrity will be dearly missed.

E. Emma Ramsli
E. Emma Ramsli, 82, formerly of Dana Road in Hermantown died Sunday May 27, 2001, in Hermantown.
Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, her family moved to Duluth when she was three years old, following the death of her father. She was a 1938 graduate of Denfeld High School.
Emma was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, its Elizabeth Circle and the Zion Vikings, a member of The Sons of Norway and VFW Auxiliary 137. Emma was also a Girl Scout leader and had volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Jennie Thompson MacIntosh; sisters Bertha and Anne; brothers Norman and Malcolm; and great-grandson Jonathan Nebel.
She is survived by her husband, M. Kenneth; daughters Linda (Jay) Poissant of Blaine, Minn., and Nancy Ramsli of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters Myrtle Wilmot and Theresa Mantay, both of Duluth, and Marie (Bernard) Nelson of Lyle, Minn.; brothers Edwin (Miriam) MacIntosh and George Thompson, all of California; grandchildren Lisa (Michael) Nebel of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Cherie Poissant of Blaine, Dana (Steve) Hattabaugh of Omaha, Neb., and Katie, Jill and Dusty Kurpius of Eagle River, Alaska; great-granddaughters Hannah Olson and Kari Hattabaugh; and twin great-grandsons, Nathaniel and Nicholas Nebel.

Marilyn A. Pomeroy
Marilyn A. Pomeroy, 62, of Jamilee Drive, Hermantown and formerly of Hutchinson Road, Duluth, died peacefully Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Alterra House in Blaine, Minn. Despite a courageous battle, the cancer caused by smoking cut short her life with us on earth.
Marilyn was born Sept. 27, 1938, in Minneapolis to John and Hazel (Anderson) Madzo. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lyle K. on Sept. 29, 1994; her parents; and her brother, John R. Madzo.
She is survived by her sons Tom (Carrie) of Mounds View, Minn., and Scott (Susan) of Crystal, Minn.; her daughter, April Pomeroy of Blaine, Minn.; grandchildren Angela, Scott Jr., Nicole, Natalie and Tyler; her brother, Eugene (Fritzine) Madzo of Waverly, Minn.; and many loving relatives and friends.
Marilyn was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who touched many lives in a special way and whose memory we will always cherish. The family extends a special thanks to the Allina Minneapolis and St. Luke's Duluth Hospice Home Care staff, Alterra Sterling House of Blaine and many doctors and friends who brought comfort and gentleness to Marilyn.

Andrew John Gallup
Andrew John Gallup, 42, of Dodge Street, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2001, in St. Lukes Hospital from complications of a heart attack.
He was born in Louisville, Ky., March 2, 1959, to Wesley and Hazel (Ticknor) Gallup. He graduated from Duluth East High School in 1978 and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis in 1980. He had 20 years of experience as an auto mechanic and worked for Kari Toyota in Superior for 14 years.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley Gallup in 1998.
He is survived by his mother, Hazel Gallup of Duluth; sons Jesse David Gallup of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Jason Michael Gallup of Duluth; and his brother, Paul Gallup of Brooklyn Center, Minn.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Thursday in St. Edward's Episcopal Church, 4401 Glenwood St. Inurnment in St. Paul's Episcopal Columbarium. Arrangements by Crawford Funeral Service.
Robert "Bob" J. Marchetti
Robert "Bob" J. Marchetti, 75, of East First Street died Sunday, July 1, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Ironwood, Mich., on Dec. 1, 1925, to Joseph and Virginia Marchetti. He graduated from St. Ambrose High School in Ironwood. Mr. Marchetti served in the Air Corps from 1944 to 1946 and went on to receive his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Michigan Tech in 1950. He was employed with Minnesota Power for 38 years, retiring in 1988 as senior vice president of engineering and operations. Although Bob's career was important to him, he valued the relationships with his associates and friends as most important.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and was very active in community activities, including serving on the Port Area Catholic Education Board. Bob was also a member of the Downtown Rotary Club of Duluth, Duluth Junior Chamber of Commerce, Duluth Chamber of Commerce and the Duluth Private Industry Council. In 1988, Bob received the distinguished service award for participation in starting the UMD Engineering School. The local IEEE chapter names its scholarship for UMD engineering students the "Robert J. Marchetti Scholarship Fund" to recognize Bob's efforts in obtaining the degreed engineering programs for the Duluth area.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his spouse, Janet; sons Jim (Nancy) of Duluth, Richard of Aurora, Colo., and Greg (Marilyn) of Victoria, Minn.; a brother, Roy (Laverne) of Dayton, Ohio; and grandchildren Joseph, Allison, Melanie, Daniel, Andrew, Jeffery and Maria.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Thursday in Dougherty Funeral Home with prayers at 6:30 p.m. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in St. John's Catholic Church.
