Helen M. Anderson
Helen M. Anderson, 74, of Alderberry Drive, Hermantown, died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in her home.
She was born May 26, 1926, to John Watsick and Marie Watsick-Helgeson in Duluth. Helen graduated from Hermantown High School and married
Carl Anderson Feb. 23, 1946, in Duluth. She was a member of Teamsters Retiree Club and Modern Woodmen.
Helen will be sadly missed by her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for all of the love and times we have all had and will hold dearly in our hearts, especially our Sunday family get-togethers that she made so special.
She was preceded in death by granddaughters Kristy Jegloski and Debbie Beede; a grandson, Jamie Anderson; and a brother, Frank Watsick Sr.
Helen is survived by her husband of 55 years, Carl; daughters Kathy (Jerry) Beede of Duluth, Bonnie (Merton "Tink") Fender of Wrenshall and Marilyn (Dennis) Mitchell of Duluth; sons Dennis (LeRae) and Dale (Michele), both of Duluth, and Carl Jr. of Wrenshall; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Marty (Richard) Lindberg of Hermantown; a brother, Clarence (Shirley) Medelbo of Duluth; a stepbrother, Jim Armstrong of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Catherine Watsick of Duluth; and many close relatives and friends.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today and 11 until the noon service Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park, Hermantown. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
Alice Mabel Zabel
Alice Mabel Zabel, 91, formerly of Hillside Gardens died Monday, March 26, 2001, in Nopeming Health Care.
She was born in Mellen, Wis., to Richard and Bertha (Hursh) Upton. Alice was a longtime Duluth resident. She was a cook for 15 years in Tourist Cafe.
Alice was a loving and dedicated housewife and mother. Her grandchildren were very special to her. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy in 1973; brothers Earl, Bill and Dicky; sisters Violet "Vi", Leetta "Lee" and Ruby; and a granddaughter, Debra Balsness.
She is survived by a daughter, Sandra Lynn (Byron E.) Mattson of Duluth; granddaughters Teresa (Mark) Bennett and Sheila Mattson, both of Duluth; great-grandchildren Stephanie Bennett, Brittany Bennett, Allyssa Bennett, Kurtis Wayt, Lindsy Wayt, Joshua Balsness, Justin Balsness, Joseph Balsness and Haily Hnatek; nieces; and nephews.

Frances E. Kelly
Frances E. Kelly, 87, of East Fourth Street died Friday, March 23, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born in Minneapolis Jan. 23, 1914. In 1940 she moved to Duluth and was employed with Sweeney Detective Bureau for 30 years. Frances then worked in the diet kitchen of St. Mary's Medical Center for approximately 10 years.

James K. "Red" Maher
James K. "Red" Maher, 76, formerly of Muskego, Wis., died Friday March 23, 2001, in Oconomowoc Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Duluth to James and Pearl (Karu) Maher. He attended Hermantown High School. Jim married
Mary Anne Smerdon Aug. 16, 1947, in Duluth. In 1954, he moved to Milwaukee. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad, was a World War II Navy veteran and retired from the Allen Bradley Co. He also was involved with sales of Shaklee and Watkins products.
Jim was known for his quick wit, laughter and love for his family. He was a storyteller extraordinaire "Irish blarney." He was Mr. Fix-it and loved his cars. He and Mary built a cottage near Rhinelander, Wis.
In later years they took to the road in their RV and spent several years living in Arizona, traveling back to Wisconsin for the summers. He read and owned just about every Western paperback written.
He was preceded in death by a son, James; and a brother, Tim.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; children Kathleen Anne (Nick) Mimier of Mukwonago, Wis., Patricia Lynne (Steve) Polzer of Arlington, Texas, Thomas Michael Maher of Rice Lake, Wis., Karen Kay (Alan) Arber of West Allis; grandchildren Emily, Samual, John, Katherine, Marie, James, Amanda, Kayla and Rachel; a sister, Mary Ann Drennan of Southgate, Calif.; a sister-in-law, Geri Maher of Freemont, Calif.; and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation: 4 until the 7:30 p.m. service today in Mealy's Funeral Home, 103 Eagle St., Eagle, Wis. Burial with military honors 10 a.m. Wednesday in Rural Home cemetery, Big Bend, Wis. Memorials to donor's choice appreciated.
Esther E. Ronn
Esther E. Ronn, 87, formerly of Duluth passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, March 24, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital, Madison, Wis.
She was born Oct. 9, 1913, in Bessemer. She married
Lloyd Ronn in 1936. Mrs. Ronn was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie, Wis.
Esther gave joy to all. She was a special person who cared for all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as many friends. We have many memories that will last forever and we will miss her love and friendship.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and brothers and sisters.
Esther is survived by children Sharon (Gene) Huffman of Duluth, William (Shirley) Ronn of Ely, Renee (Robert) Crothers of Sun Prairie and Rev. Daniel (Darelyn) Ronn of Ely; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Victor Leino
Victor Leino, 97, of London Road passed away Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.
He was born June 30, 1903, in Minneapolis to Victor and Miina Leino, but lived most of his life in Duluth. Victor married
Melba Sandberg June 30, 1941, in Duluth. He worked for 40 years in Kindy Lyon Optical Co., managing the operations.
Victor was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Chapter of AARP, charter member of the Elks and played for the Finnish Athletic Club basketball team.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Melba; sisters-in-law Leona Backer and Jane Sturm; and a brother, Gordon (Ruth) Sandberg of Long Beach, Calif.

Mary Blanche Scheall Anderson
Mary Blanche Scheall Anderson, 87, of New Market, Md., formerly of Duluth died Monday, April 30, 2001, in the Citizens Nursing Home, Frederick, Md.
Born March 29, 1914, in Massey, Ontario, she was a daughter of the late William and Matilda Pichette Bisson.
Twice married
, she was the wife of the late Andrew J. Scheall and Robert Anderson.
Mrs. Anderson was active with the Salvation Army.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Steven; sisters Olive and Luella; and a son, Andrew J. Scheall Jr.
She is survived by a son, Steven C. Scheall of Duluth; daughters Diania (Dan) Eiman of Clermont, Fla., Idellia (Ray) Meek of Pointe, Texas, Juanita (Jerry) Wright-Laney of Duluth, Ga.; Melode (John) DeKam of Midland, Mich., and Yolanda (Tim) Foosness of New Market; a brother, Clifford Bisson of Espanola, Ontario; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and a daughter-in-law, Sandy Scheall of Duluth.

Gladys (Prescott) Koschine
Gladys (Prescott) Koschine, 93, of London Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in Duluth.
She was born Feb. 10, 1907, in Duluth to Anna and George Prescott. She lived in Duluth her entire life.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick W. Koschine; sisters Bernice Nygaard and Adeline Samas; and a brother, George W. Prescott.
Gladys is survived by her brother, Robert K. (Ann) Prescott of Duluth; and numerous loving and special nieces and nephews.

Lawrence John Smith
Lawrence John Smith, 76, of Duluth died peacefully in his home Friday, April 27, 2001, after a long illness.
He was born in Duluth Jan. 22, 1925, and was a lifelong resident. Lawrence had worked at Fraser Shipyards for many years as a welder machinist and also worked for Taystee Bread as a truck driver and mechanic.
He was a member of Local Teamsters Union 346 and VFW Post 137. He also spent four years in the Navy during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart along with other medals.
Lawrence was a wonderful and loving father and grandfather who will be deeply missed by his family.
Lawrence was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Hall, and many brothers and sisters.
He is survived by a son, Michael and his special friend, Michelle Gordon of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Carol Smith; grandsons Michael Smith Jr. of Duluth and Damion Hall of California; many nieces and nephews including Jim, Susan, Linda and Mary Ellen Smith; two great-grandchildren; and former wife and friend, Rose Novlan and her son, Daniel Novlan.

Clarice Evelyn Pederson Stockland
Clarice Evelyn Pederson Stockland, 81, of Lexington Street died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.
She was born Feb. 19, 1920, to Ole and Olive (Ericksmoen) Pederson in the Minneapolis Swedish Hospital. She came to Duluth as a young girl and grew up in Morgan Park. She graduated from Morgan Park High School. During World War II, she worked for U.S. Steel's Duluth Works.
Clarice enjoyed people and always gave of herself unselfishly. She waitressed at the VFW, Cooties and volunteered at Miller-Dwan Hospital and other hospitals.
Clarice loved to polka with her husband. She will be sadly missed by all.
She was preceded in death by an infant child; her parents; a brother, James; and a sister, Stella Lindstrom.
Surviving are her husband, Theodore; a son, Ted (Kristi) of Cloquet; a daughter, Carol (Gary "Bo") Groves of Duluth; a sister, Myrtle Lindgren; grandchildren Eric (Charity), Adam, Lee, Clare and Annie Stockland and Sundae Groves; a great-granddaughter, Breanna Groves; several nieces and nephews; and lots of close friends.
Special thanks to all who cared for her at St. Luke's Hospital during her last days with us.
