Maxine Esther Ona
Maxine Esther Ona, 83, of West Eighth Street died Thursday, May 31, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.
She was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Mahnomen, Minn., to Victor and Esther Jane (Hammerli) Dryden. She moved with her family to Proctor in her early teens and was a graduate of Proctor High School. She worked as a seamstress for Wagar Furs and Carlson Furriers, retiring in 1982 after 35 years as a seamstress.
Maxine was an accomplished needle woman and many people enjoyed the things she made with her needles. She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and its Peace Circle.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, Lawrence Klang, in World War II in 1944.
Survivors include her husband, Melvin Lawrence Ona, whom she married
on Feb. 18, 1955; her daughter, Nancy (John) Eliason of Duluth; her son, Ronald Ona of Hollywood, Fla.; a sister, Mabel (Wallace) Nosek of Duluth; her brother, Harlan Dryden of Victorville, Calif.; grandchildren Mike (Betsy) Eliason of Duluth, Dianne (Tim) Piepenburg of Minneapolis and Katrina Ona of Miramar, Fla.; and great-grandchildren Kayla Grell and Nikole Eliason, both of Duluth, and Collin Piepenburg and twins McKenzi and Maddison Piepenburg, all of Minneapolis.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday in Bell Brothers Chapel and from noon until the 1 p.m. service Monday in Asbury United Methodist Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Betty Lou (Madsen) Molitor
Betty Lou (Madsen) Molitor, 73, longtime resident of Grand Avenue died Sunday, May 13, 2001, in her residence.
Betty was born in Duluth on May 20, 1927, to Emery and Thelma (Smith) Madsen and was a lifelong resident of the city. She was a graduate of Denfeld High School and had been a homemaker. Betty and her husband, Kenneth, celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on May 7.
Betty loved to be around her family and friends and always enjoyed having people stopping by to visit. She collected teddy bears, and loved to crochet and knit and play cards and bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Kathleen.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth W.; daughters Joan (Leonard) Steltz and Jody Molitor of Duluth; stepbrothers Wilfred (Sally) Jenks Jr. and Wayne (Donna) Jenks; stepsisters Louise (Robert) VanNess, Lorraine (Robert) Johnson and Barbara Angeline, all of Michigan; grandchildren Tammy Steltz and Chad (Tara) Steltz; great-grandchildren Amanda, Caylee and Marissa; and her cousins, Nancy (Mike) Sury and Tom (Belita) Madsen, both of Texas, and Terry (Romona) Stenberg of White Bear Lake, Minn.

John Raymond Carlson
John Raymond Carlson, 40, of Trinity Road died Saturday, May 12, 2001, as the result of a traffic accident.
He was born in Duluth on Feb. 27, 1961, to Raymond John and Norma Arlene (Koski) Carlson. He attended Duluth Central High School and was a Navy veteran, having served as a signalman on the USS Peleliu, out of San Diego and later as a Great Lakes recruiter, stationed in Miller Beach, Ind. He worked for Maney International as a diesel mechanic and was a member of International Union Local 241.
He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond on Aug. 13, 1993.
Survivors include his life partner, Ivy Lucas and children, Lee and Sarah; his sons, Joseph and Matthew Carlson, both of Tucson, Ariz.; his mother, Norma Carlson of Duluth; sisters Wendy (Bruce) Peterson of Duluth, Lynette (Mark) Running of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Marilyn (Jim) Barbo of Carlton; his brother, Bruce (Laurie) Carlson of Duluth; aunts; uncles; and nieces and nephews.

Mark Daniel McKeon
Mark Daniel McKeon, 51, formerly of Duluth died Thursday, May 3, 2001, in Mobile, Ala.
He was born in Minneapolis on Feb. 9, 1950, to Daniel and Elizabeth McKeon.
He was a resident of Duluth from 1950 to 1967 where he attended Cathedral High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1979 and was employed by Kimberly-Clark Corp. from 1972 to 2001.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Fatima and her daughters, Maryam and Lula of Bahrain; brothers Michael (Nancy) of Duluth and Timothy (Judi) of Oshkosh, Wis.; a sister, Rita of Oshkosh; and nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be Tuesday, May 29, in Appleton, Wis.
Norman Floyd DePew
Norman Floyd DePew, 76, formerly of Hermantown died Saturday, May 12, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.
Norman was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he received the Purple Heart. He was a docent at the Lake Superior Zoo and was the local volunteer of the year in 1996 with the Northland Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Surviving are his wife, Joyce; a stepson, Larry (Patti) Nadeau; a stepdaughter, Carol Nadeau-Riley and her husband Tim Riley of Saginaw; brothers Tony (June), Ferdinand (Louise) and John (Carol) Altringer; sisters Betty (Ron) Emmes and Mary (John) Wright; and grandchildren.

Lucius Albert St. George
Lucius Albert St. George, 74, of Duluth passed away Sunday, May 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice Unit.
He was a veteran of the Navy serving during World War II. Lucius worked at Great Lakes Storage (Meehan Seaway Service) for 38 years. He volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission for over 10 years. Lucius enjoyed spending his summer in Solon Springs.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois in 1976.
Lucius is survived by his wife, Signe; his son, Roy St. George; a brother, Leo St. George; a sister, Leola Page; stepchildren Renae (John) Fryt, Ronald Prescott, Karen (Phil) Witucki, Sarah (Marsh) Nelson, Darlene Kallberg, James Prescott and Kathleen (Tim) Jackson; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial service: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Duluth. Family will greet friends one hour before the service at the church. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park cemetery, Hermantown. Services entrusted to Johnson Mortuary.
Robert H. O'Rourke
Robert H. O'Rourke, 86, of Glendale Street died in the arms of his family on Saturday, May 12, 2001, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 6, 1914, in Duluth to Michael and Henrietta (Watts) O'Rourke. Bob graduated from Central High School in 1932 and was a lifelong resident of Duluth except for the time he served in the Navy during World War II. He worked for the Duluth Fire Department for 39 years, retiring as the first assistant chief. While working for the fire department, he also worked for Arrowhead Electric as an estimator and designer.
Bob was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, trustee and elder.
He was a member of many civic, fraternal and charitable organizations throughout his life. His memberships included Lakeside Masonic Lodge 281, where he was a past master and served as its treasurer. He was a member of the Duluth Valley of the Scottish Rite receiving the title of 32nd Degree KCCH. Bob served on the stage crew and the Temple Association for many years. He was also a member of Aad Temple Shrine and its director's staff. Bob was a life fellow of Kiwanis, Gitche-Gumee Chapter, serving as secretary-treasurer and volunteered in their Reading is Fundamental program, Special Olympics and serving in the soup kitchen at the Damiano Center.
He enjoyed music and was proficient in restoring and repairing organs, especially rebuilding pipe organs. Bob was a private pilot and had a lifelong affection for Lake Superior. He was dedicated to his family and active in Boys Scouts, Indian Guides and was a junior and senior high school youth advisor at Lakeside Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen M. O'Rourke of Arlington, Va.
Bob is survived by his sons James (Candace) O'Rourke of St. Petersburg Beach, Fla., and Michael (Kathy) O'Rourke of Duluth; a daughter, Peggy (Sanford) Baddin of Tarzana, Calif.; grandchildren Daniel O'Rourke, Laura Hamernick, Sara Baddin, Ryan Baddin, Kevin O'Rourke, Ryan O'Rourke and David O'Rourke; great-grandchildren Matthew, Molly and Jack O'Rourke; sisters Grace Graves of Wakefield, Mich., and Alice D'Arcey of Felton, Calif.; and lifelong friend, Lorraine Therrien of Duluth.
Visitation: 5-8 p.m. today with Masonic rites in Johnson Mortuary, 514 E. Third St. Service at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Scottish Rite Bodies Masonic Temple, 4 W. Second St., Duluth. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Bob's name to the Scottish Rite Language Disorder Clinic or any of the Kiwanis Club, Gitche-Gummee Chapter projects.
Marilyn Mae Mayberry
Marilyn Mae Mayberry, 63, of West Second Street died Saturday, May 12, 2001, in her home.
She was born in Duluth and lived in Minneapolis from 1961 until returning to Duluth in 1994. She was an election judge and volunteered at the Salvation Army and at her church, First Presbyterian Church. She was a wonderful mother and loving friend.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Surviving are sons Loyd, Scott and Jason, all of North Minneapolis; daughters Diane and April of Duluth; a cousin, Ken Anderson of Irvine, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and many friends.

James J. "Jimmy" Balen
James J. "Jimmy" Balen, 43, of Duluth, formerly of Grand Junction, Colo., died Saturday, May 26, 2001.
He was born July 14, 1957, in Grand Rapids to Robert and Diana (VanWave) Balen. He had been a Duluth resident for most of his life and was a 1975 graduate of Morgan Park High School.
Jimmy loved traveling and riding his Harley with his son, Mike, fishing, camping and the mountains. He was known for his witty sense of humor, enjoyed talking to anyone and had a heart of gold.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert; grandparents Tillie and James VanWave; and uncles Gaylen VanWave and Leroy VanWave.
Survivors include a daughter, Angela (Scott) Skogquist of Grand Junction; sons Michael of Grand Junction and Chance Allan Ward Balen of Duluth; his mother, Diane Balen of Duluth; brothers Bob (Patty) of Elko, Nev., and Dave (Krista) of Duluth, special aunt, Ruby VanWave of Duluth; special cousin, Jodi Mulek of Duluth; a granddaughter, Samantha "Little Bird" of Grand Junction; a niece, Breanna Anderson; a nephew, Austin J. Balen of Duluth; his dog, Chester; and other aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.
Services were held Wednesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. His remains will be scattered in various locations in the United States that were meaningful to him. George R. Hanson
George R. Hanson, 80, of Pitt Street died suddenly Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in his home.
George was born Jan. 4, 1921, in Duluth to Werner and Christine (Olson) Hanson. He graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1939 and Duluth Junior College in 1941. George was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on a destroyer in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific. He married
Elaine Johnson on April 14, 1951. George sold office and banking machines for the Burroughs Corp., now Unisys Corp., for 31 years, and later worked 13 years at Duluth Typewriter, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, American Legion Post 342, VFW Post 137, AARP 2505 and the Vocalizers Club (Larynectomy Support Group) of Duluth.
George was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and his son, Douglas, in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine; sons Allan (Peggy) Hanson of Duluth and David (Paula) Hanson of Rochester, Minn.; his daughter, Ann (Rich) Cutts of Duluth; a sister, Myrtle Unden of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Julie, Lindsey and Courtney Hanson of Rochester, and Katie, Tiffany, Elizabeth, Adam, Matthew and Jenna Hanson, all of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Lori Hanson of Duluth; special nieces, Karol Savola of Austin and Lois Maki of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and nephews, Robert and Thomas Hanson.
