Enid Lauraine Grumdahl

Enid Lauraine Grumdahl, 81, formerly of London Road, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center with her family by her side.

She was born Dec. 29, 1919, in Duluth to John and Rena (Anderson) Miller. She married Ivar Grumdahl on April 30, 1942, in Framingham, Mass., while he was serving in the Army. They returned to Duluth and owned and operated Grumdahl and Sons Rusco Inc. from 1947 until Ivar's death in 1994. Enid was the treasurer and handled all of the financial operations for the business.

She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Trinity Women of the ELCA. She was a member and past president of the Grant PTA and was a volunteer at both St. Mary's Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital. She was an avid UMD hockey fan and a member of the Blue Line Club.

Enid was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, who shared her loving ways with all of those whose lives she touched. She had a love and zest for life and a wonderful sense of humor.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Ivar on April 13, 1994; sisters Lucille Hansen, Edith Sundset and Amy Thompson; and brothers Raymond and Rodney Miller.

She is survived by her children, Barbara (Robert) Johnson of Duluth, Roger (Connie) Grumdahl of Crystal, Minn., Leslie (Pamela) Grumdahl of Duluth and Pam (Kim) Rees of Duluth; grandchildren Laurie J. Johnson, Eric (Julie) Grumdahl, Nathan (Arzu Gokcen) Grumdahl, Christin Grumdahl, Jesse (Brooke) Grumdahl, Ryan, Rebecca and Derek Grumdahl, and Ben and Annie Rees; a great-granddaughter, Erica; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.

Joan (Grady) Diehl

Joan (Grady) Diehl, 76, of Scotch Plains, N.J., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in Overlook Hospital in Summit, N.J.

She was born Jan. 9, 1925, in Duluth to R. Armistead and Lela (Farrell) Grady. She lived in Duluth and attended Holy Rosary Grade School, Stanbrook Hall High School and the College of St. Scholastica. She married Judson Pond Diehl in 1945. They lived in Port Cartier, Quebec, Canada, before moving to Scotch Plains, N.J., in 1964.

Joan was a loving and caring wife and mother who never stopped doing for others. She knit beautiful sweaters and made hand-hooked rugs.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Judson Pond Diehl in 1998.

She is survived by her children, John (Kathy) Diehl of Princeton, N.J., Daniel (Gina) Diehl of Chester, Calif., and Sally Gentile of Westfield, N.J.; brothers James (Athalie) Grady of Minneapolis, Frank Grady of Anaheim, Calif., Charles (Emmy Lou) Grady of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; and a sister, Susan Mills-Moriarity of Duluth; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Private services were held. Visitation was in Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.

Samuel Kinder "Sam" Wagner

Samuel Kinder "Sam" Wagner, 88, of Cato Avenue died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born July 12, 1912, in Springfield, Ohio, to Samuel Vincent and Elsie Del (Kinder) Wagner and graduated from Springfield High School in 1934. A Duluth resident since 1956, he married Chlorist Eileen Garrity on Sept. 15, 1956. He retired from Acme Foundry in 1976 as a molder journeyman and from Haarman & Reimer in 1994 as a security guard, after 17 years of service. He was appointed an Honorary Kentucky Colonel by Gov. Louie B. Nunn in 1971.

Sam was an avid woodcarver.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Samuel Wagner in March 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Chlorist; daughters Flora Speros of Kettering, Ohio, Rebecca (James) Picolo of Springfield, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Joanne (Jack) VanCaster of Sturgeon Bay, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

There will be no service. Inurnment in Ferncliff cemetery in Springfield at a later date. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Velora Ostrowski

Velora Ostrowski, 78, of Springvale Court died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice with her family at her side.

She was born Aug. 2, 1922, in Denham, Minn., to Thomas and Mary Martichuski. The family moved to Duluth in 1931.

She married John A. Ostrowski on Feb. 2, 1946, in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Duluth. She had worked for Zinsmaster Bakery, Bjorlin's Bakery and Gustafson's Bakery.

Velora was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a member of the former St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She loved the outdoors, spending time on the backyard swing in the sunshine or fishing with her husband. She enjoyed working puzzles and she loved to knit and crochet, making many afghans for family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Albert and Steven; and sisters Ida, Frances, Stella, Emma and Martha.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John; a son, Tom (Kim) of Duluth; daughters Kathy (Bill) Christoferson of Dallas, Susan (Jim) Berger of Leawood, Kan., and Lori (Jayme) Carlson of Wrenshall; brothers Florian and Raymond; sisters Lorraine Martichuski and Julia Robinson Pugliese; grandchildren Mindy, Kristi and Stacey Ostrowski, Kelly Garcia, Ashley and Sean Berger, and Tanner and Cheyanne Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with 6:30 p.m. rosary recitation in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Polish Catholic cemetery. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund.

Milton P. Williams

Milton P. Williams, 26, formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Bunny Williams.

Survivors include his father, Milton (Ana) Nash; his girlfriend, Lindsay Elmquist, and their son, Tevin Williams; a son, Nicholas Soderlund; two sisters, Jeneen Williams-Hill and Brenda Valle; and his grandparents.

Memorial service: 4 p.m. Saturday at 228 N. 14th Ave. E., Duluth. Funeral service on Friday, May 4, 2001, in Precious Memory Funeral Home, 7605 S. Halsted Street, Chicago, Ill.

David Bruce "Davey" Tahtinen

David Bruce "Davey" Tahtinen, 47, of Nekton Group Home, Greysolon died Thursday, April 26, 2001, in his home.

He was born Nov. 8, 1953, in Duluth to Paul R. and Lois M. (Rolfson) Tahtinen. Davey was a lifelong Duluth resident and had been a participant of UDAC activities for 25 years. He had participated in Special Olympics as a swimmer. He enjoyed swimming, his bicycle, the cabin at Whiteface Reservoir and spending time with family, friends and the neighbors at the cabin.

Davey was preceded in death by his mother on March 21, 1998.

Survivors include his father, Paul Tahtinen of Duluth; brothers Wayne (Carol) Tahtinen of Coon Rapids, Minn., and Larry (Janice) Tahtinen of Duluth; nieces Tara Tahtinen of Coon Rapids and Jennifer Tahtinen of St. Paul; a nephew, Ryan Tahtinen of Duluth; an aunt, Betty Christiansen of Duluth; many cousins; and his extended family at Nekton Group Home, Greysolon. His family wishes to extend special thanks for wonderful care given by the staff of Nekton Group Home, Greysolon and St. Mary's Oncology and Hospice units.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Bob Linaberry-Charis officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Mildred Ingrid Johnson

Mildred Ingrid Johnson, 89, of Arrowhead Road passed away in the loving arms of her children Thursday, April 26, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth.

Born in Rainy River, Ontario, Canada, on Nov. 22, 1911, to John and Marine Grande, "Millie" spent 81 of her 89 years calling Duluth "home." Here, she met and married Ingolf "Pops" Johnson in 1931 and had four children. She spent many happy years at home caring for her children until deciding to go to work at St. Luke's Hospital, where she worked for 15 years.

Millie spent a lifetime enjoying being with people, especially her family. Her ability to comfort, her compassion and her unique sense of humor were all a part of what made her the wonderful woman that she was. She was truly loved. Her memory and amazing spirit will forever be alive in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

Millie was preceded in death by her brother, Alfred Grande; and her husband, Ingolf Johnson.

She is survived by her children, Donald W. Johnson of Reno, Nev., Marian (Marshall) Stenersen of Duluth, Sandra (Gerry) Nervick of Duluth, and Carole (Leonard) Schire of Cottage Grove, Minn.; 12 grandchildren (with one on the way); 11 great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren.

Millie spent the last two years of her life living at the Benedictine Health Center, where she was fortunate to have had "years added to her life." Thanks to her special friend "Dan" (Darryl) and many other loving caregivers, Millie was truly blessed with extraordinary care.

Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Sunday in Johnson Mortuary, 514 E. Third St., and continuing from 9 until the 10 a.m. service Monday in Kenwood Lutheran Church, Pastor Brad Jensen officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Edwin V. Grecinger Sr.

Edwin V. Grecinger Sr., 82, of Duluth passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Sept. 13, 1918, in Duluth to Fred and Helen (Okelsienska) Grecinger. Edwin married Delores Hauge on Dec. 17, 1979, in Duluth. He was employed as an engineer for Burlington Northern for 33 1/2 years, retiring in 1981.

Edwin was a former member of the Moose Lodge and his enjoyment in life was hunting, fishing and camping.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, June in 1978; sons Richard and Edwin Jr.; a daughter, Carol Jean; and a grandson, William Jackman.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Delores; sons Tony of Tomah, Wis., and Leonard of Faribault, Minn; daughters Linda (Tom) Kromschroeder and Frieda (Everett) Erickson, both of Duluth; stepchildren Diane (Michael) Cochran, Dean (Kim) Hauge, Jerry (Linda) Hauge, Cathy (the late Todd) O'Bey, Linda (Kevin) Eckholm, Nancy (Matt) Cuypers, all of Duluth and John (Brenda) Hauge of Pine City, Minn.; 51 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and his loving companion, Maggie.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Tuesday in Lakeshore Lutheran Home Chapel. Pastor Craig Carlson officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery at a later date. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Alice V. Bennett

Alice V. Bennett, 95, of Piedmont Avenue died Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

She was born Aug. 30, 1905, in Duluth to August and Selma (Peterson) Carlson. Alice graduated from Denfeld High School, Superior Normal and the University of Minnesota Duluth. She was confirmed May 16, 1920, in Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity. She married Edward Bennett in Duluth in 1931. Alice taught in Duluth for 40 years and 21 years in Piedmont, retiring in 1971.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Bennett in April 1984; a sister, Violet Anderson; a brother, Marvin Carlson; a son, James Bennett; and a granddaughter, Donna Lee.

Alice is survived by a son, Thomas Bennett of Hermantown; grandchildren Glen (Jamie) Bennett of Escondido, Calif., Barbara (Tom) Robillard of Hermantown, Mark (Gail) Bennett of Twig, Mike (Cindy) Bennett of San Antonio, Texas, Sharon Laaks of Moscow, Edward Bennett of Las Vegas, Barbara of Henderson, Nev., and Debra of Nevada; three great-granddaughters; a great-great-grandson; and a special friend, Robert Stika of Salem, Ore.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Thursday in Fred Olson Mortuary, 2110 W. First St. Burial in Bethany cemetery, Hermantown.

Victor Leino

Victor Leino, 97, of London Road passed away Sunday, March 25, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

He was born June 30, 1903, in Minneapolis to Victor and Miina Leino, but lived most of his life in Duluth. Victor married Melba Sandberg June 30, 1941, in Duluth. He worked for 40 years in Kindy Lyon Optical Co., managing the operations.

Victor was a member of Lakeside Presbyterian Church, Lakeside Chapter of AARP, charter member of BPOE Elks and had played basketball for the Finnish Athletic Club basketball team.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Melba; sisters-in-law Leona Backer and Jane Sturm; and a brother, Gordon (Ruth) Sandberg of Long Beach, Calif.

No services held at family's request. Memorials may be made in Victor's name to Lakeside Presbyterian Church, 4430 McCulloch St., Duluth, MN 55804. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
