Oliver A. Trachsel
Oliver A. Trachsel, 79, of East Wabasha Street died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospice.
Oliver was born July 26, 1921, in St. Louis to Alfred and Bessie (Bruegger) Trachsel. He graduated from Rosemont High School in St. Louis and served in the Coast Guard from 1941 to 1945. He married
Kathryn Hargraves on Nov. 11, 1943, in Duluth. He worked for the city of Duluth for 33 years, retiring in 1983.
He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Lakeside American Legion and AARP. He was a woodworker and was especially gifted in making and fixing clocks and in other crafts that he shared with friends and family. Oliver was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in all their athletic endeavors. His open-heartedness, generosity, positive attitude and selflessness made him an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
"Trax" was a man who knew abundance -- a baseball game on a beautiful spring day, an afternoon surrounded by family, a newborn great-grandchild bouncing on his knee, an unending world to explore. He was a kind and gentle man who was loved immensely by his family and friends and will be missed by all.
Oliver is survived by his wife of 57 years, Kathryn; a daughter, Mary (John) Juracek of West Yellowstone, Mont.; sons James (Gay) of Duluth, William (Mary Ellen) of St. Louis, Larry (Mary Lou) of Duluth and Steven (Cathie) of Duluth; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of resurrection: 11 a.m. today in St. John's Church, 4230 St. John's Avenue in Woodland. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.
Myron Rosendahl
Myron Rosendahl, 63, of East Eighth Street died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, in his home following a short illness.
He was born Jan. 18, 1938, to Gilbert and Mary Rosendahl in Duluth. Myron was a member of the Laborers Union Local 1091, working construction for more than 20 years, and he worked at Goodwill Industries for the past 19 years.
He is survived by his wife, Clara; sons Lowell (Jayne), Gilbert (Kanday) and Duane "Tony"; daughters Patti (Dan) Broady, Tracy (Terry Perrault) Rosendahl and Sharon (Rick) Dorman Lucia, all of Duluth; 14 grandchildren; an expected great-grandchild; a brother, Frank (Kathy) Rosendahl of Minneapolis; sisters Marie (Bill) Lanhart of Hibbing, Gloria Bailey of Two Harbors and Ethel (John) Engstrom of Hibbing; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Saturday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.
Clementine G. Spehar
Clementine G. Spehar, 88, formerly of Beverly Street died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.
She was born in Duluth and lived here most of her life. She attended Duluth Business University and had worked as a clerk for Sears and Glass Block department stores. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 55 Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the Slavanian's Women's Club.
Her parents were Joseph and Sandie Talerico. Also preceding her in death was her husband, Joseph J. in 1971; and brothers Henry and Francis Talerico.
Clementine is survived by sons Gerald (Kathy), Richard (Janice) and Michael (Judy), all of Duluth; a daughter, Patricia (Robert) Scott of Makinen; a sister, Lucille Somin of Duluth; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with a 7 p.m. vigil service in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 151 W. Linden St., Duluth Heights. Phyllis Ann Wakefield
Phyllis Ann Wakefield, 56, of Hermantown died Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital as the result of an auto accident.
She was born in Mahnomen, Minn., on July 29, 1944, to Anthony and Irene Fairbanks Perrault. Phyllis was raised in Duluth and attended Central High School. Phyllis had waitressed in local establishments including the former Hotel Duluth and had also worked as a longshoreman. She married
Edward Wakefield in Duluth Nov. 17, 1962. A member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church Gnesen, Phyllis was active in area flea markets and auctions and was an avid bingo enthusiast.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Sr., in 1999; a son, Jimmy; a brother, Pete; and her parents.
She is survived by sons Edward Jr. (Jennifer) of Superior and Steven of Hermantown; brothers Jim (Esther) Perrault of Proctor, Gerald (Rae) Perrault of Eveleth, Gene (Donna) Perrault of Virginia, and Terry, Dennis (Carol) and Kenny (Tessie) Perrault, all of Duluth; sisters Ardelle Perrault of Kentucky and Judie Perrault of Duluth; grandchildren Amber, Dylan, Brooke, Zachary, Aaron, Mariah and Erica; many nieces and nephews; and brothers and sisters-in-law.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with 6:30 wake prayers in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church Gnesen. Burial in St. Joseph's cemetery. Marilyn Grace Strudwick Leach
Marilyn Grace Strudwick Leach, 71, of Ontario, Calif., died Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, in West Covina, Calif.
A retired sales associate, she was born on March 12, 1929, in Duluth and lived in Ontario for the past 35 years. She was a Duluth resident for 36 years.
She is survived by her son Jack R. Leach of Ontario; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Strudwick; and nieces and nephews Pam Palen, Cheri Smokovich, Sue Bosell and Scott Strudwick.
Private interment: will be held in Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario. Draper Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Samuel S. Jakubek
Samuel S. Jakubek, 83, of East First Street died Monday, April 16, 2001, in his home.
He was born in Gnesen Township on Oct. 28, 1917, to John and Anna Jakubek. He was in Civilian Conservation Camp, serving at Gooseberry State Park. He was a corporal in the Army, serving in World War II from April 13, 1942, to Nov. 1, 1945, as a medical field technician. He was a truck driver for Murphy Freight Lines for 27 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 346.
Samuel was an avid fisherman. He also loved to play cribbage and loved dancing. He taught his kids how to schottische. He was a generous person and his favorite prayer he memorized was the Apostle's Creed.
He was preceded in death by his son, Edward in 1996; his parents; and eight brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret; daughters Tracey (Joseph) Kayoum of Northfield, Minn., and Kelly Jakubek of Duluth; sons Jeffrey Jakubek of Minneapolis and Tim Jakubek of Duluth; grandchildren Tiffany Jakubek of Duluth and Katie Jo Kayoum of Northfield; and a brother, Valentine Jakubek of Duluth.
Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday with 6:30 p.m. wake service in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Alta Louise Nordeen
Alta Louise Nordeen, 92, of Duluth passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born Nov. 21, 1908, in Two Harbors to Louis and Inga (Olsson) Westlund. Alta married
Arthur Nordeen on June 6, 1941, in Duluth.
She graduated from Two Harbors High School and went on to graduate from Duluth Teacher's College, which is now the University of Minnesota Duluth. Alta was a teacher at Knife River, then taught at Proctor in 1934 until 1941, when she was a substitute teacher for a few years in Duluth. After teaching in Duluth, Alta went back to teaching at Proctor during the war. In 1956, Alta received her bachelor's degree in education from UMD and became principal of Pike Lake in the Proctor school system until 1962. She then continued to do substitute teaching.
Alta enjoyed sewing, painting and playing the organ. She was a member of the Duluth Retired Teachers Association, the State Association, AARP and Lakeside Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by her parents; seven sisters; a brother; and a nephew, J.E. Louis Pelletier.
Alta is survived by her husband of 59 years, Arthur; nieces Jeanne Odencrantz Wilcox and Mary Westlund Butler; nephews Lewis Ely, Errol Sehnke, John Westlund and Russell Ely; and numerous great nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today and 11 a.m. service Friday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., the Rev. John Sippola officiating. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery.
Clifford Arthur Sletten
Clifford Arthur Sletten, 87, of 61st Avenue West died Sunday, April 15, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
Clifford was born April 23, 1913, in Fosston, Minn., to Christian and Alma Sletten. He retired from the DTA in 1974 after 30 years of service.
He was a member of Our Savior's Evangelical Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, Janet (Chris) Boyles; a son, Todd (Diane) Sletten; a granddaughter, Erin Kowalik; grandsons Michael Sletten and Erik and Jay Olson; great-grandsons Jared Even and Jason Olson; brothers Arlo and Lloyd (Joyce), both of Duluth; and several nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
A memorial service celebrating Clifford's life for all friends and relatives at 2 p.m. Monday in Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 4831 Grand Avenue.
Edward C. Vontin
Edward C. Vontin, 78, of Duluth died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice.
He retired from the Erie Mining Co. as a machinist and was an Army veteran, having served in the European Theatre during World War II.
Edward is survived by his wife, Maye C. Vontin; a daughter, Holly Vontin; and a brother, Wallace Vontin of Two Harbors.
No services will be held at Edward's request.
Kathie Louise Murphy
Kathie Louise Murphy left us Sunday, April 15, 2001.
"Kathie is in our hearts forever. We picture her riding her horse on the beaches of Jamaica with her Bear Dog."
She is lovingly remembered by her husband, Jimmy Murphy; her daughters, Amber O'Geay and Autumn Murphy; her mother, Delores Robison; her sisters, Vickie Minko, Gerrie Sullivan and Laurie Tahtinen; the only best friend anyone in the world would want, Pam Watters; her confidant, Tod Minko; and all of the rest of her loving family. We will join you in God's time, until then "keep on riding."
A gathering of family and friends: 1 p.m. Saturday in Gnesen School Community Club, 6356 Howard Gnesen Road. Private burial at a later date.
Vernon William Fyksen
Vernon William Fyksen, 81, of Duluth died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center, with his family at his side.
His illness was short, but his life was not.
He was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Duluth to Martin and Thelma (Croteau) Fyksen. Vernon graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1938. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his return he married
Virginia Peterson on May 4, 1946, in Duluth. Vernon was a lifelong resident of Duluth, retiring as a superintendent from the Cutler-Magner Co., after 37 years of service.
He was a member of the Proctor Moose, David Wisted Zenith City American Legion Post and AARP. Vernon loved to play bingo, had a great sense of humor and traveled all around the world with his wife.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Lorraine (Walter) Peterson.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters Barbara (Jerry) Reinhardt of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Roberta (Robert, deceased) McKeever of Duluth; a son, James (Anne) Fyksen of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; and several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
