Orville Robert Hanson

Orville Robert Hanson, 72, of Midway Road died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospice.

He was born in Duluth to Chris Hanson and Sarah (Rainey), and lived in Duluth and Midway Township. He attended Proctor schools. Orville married Viola M. Seguin in 1950 in Duluth. He retired from the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway in 1989 after 43 years as a machinist. He was a great husband, father and grandfather. He loved to work on home projects. Orville was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and AARP.

Orville was preceded in death by his parents; sons Richard in 1955 and Steven in 1992; brothers Chris Hanson and Ted Rainey; and sisters Gloria Guptill and Viola Nickel.

He is survived by his wife, Viola M.; sons John (Vickie) of Toledo, Ohio, David of Superior and Kenneth "Pete" (Cindy) of Cloquet; a daughter, Mary (Butch) Nickel of Proctor; a brother, Jackie (Dori) of Proctor; sisters Betty (Art) Taylor of Hermantown and Sandra (John) Kiminki of Proctor; 10 granddaughters; five grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. memorial service Saturday in Augustana Lutheran Church, Midway Township. Inurnment in Sunrise Memorial Park. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Catherine KT Bruno

Catherine KT Bruno, 81, of South 61st Avenue West passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 17, 1920, to Eli and Antonia Vrdoljak in Galveston, Texas. She married Anthony J. Bruno Sr. on Jan. 3, 1940, in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Duluth.

She was a member of the Italian-American Club and was a volunteer at the Rainbow and West End Senior Centers and Chris Jensen Nursing Home. She was a former member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church and its Ladies Guild. She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Parish and its Rosary Society, Chris Jensen Auxiliary, Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Croatian Fraternal Union.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Anthony, in 1998; sisters Angela Vrdoljak and Mary Velus; brothers Matthew "Tex" Vrdoljak, Anthony Dolac, Nicholas Vrdoljak and Joseph Vrdoljak.

She is survived by a daughter, Candy (Lee Francisco) Bruno of Duluth; sons Anthony Jr. "Tony" (C. Jean) of Duluth, Michael (Kathy) of Owatonna, Minn., and Peter (Teresa) of Duluth; a sister, Theresa McDonell of Milwaukee; a sister-in-law, Shirley Vrdoljak of Cloquet; grandchildren Anthony "Tony" III, Amy Bruno, Monica (Michael) Andrews and Jessica Bruno; and great-grandsons, Bailey Tyler Andrews and Jackson Anthony Andrews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with 6 p.m. wake prayers in Bell Brothers Chapel. Mass of Christian burial 10 a.m. Monday in Holy Family Catholic Church, the Rev. Father Andrew Knop officiating. Burial in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Frank J. Walczynski

Frank J. Walczynski, 78, of North 27th Avenue West died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Hospice, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Duluth on Oct. 4, 1922, to Frank J. and Agnes Klejewski Walczynski, he was a 1941 graduate of Denfeld High School. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Frank married Cecelia Maniak on Jan. 9, 1943. After her death in 1992, he married Liana Bush on Oct. 12, 1997, in Duluth. In addition to being a retired letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, he also ran his own blacktopping business.

Frank was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Friars of St. Francis, American Legion Post 28, Disabled American Veterans, the Polish National Alliance, National Association of Letter Carriers, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, AARP, and a 29-year member of AA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Cecelia, a brother, Stanley, sisters Verna Homich, Cecelia Nelson and Frances Nesgoda; and a granddaughter, Elise Walczynski.

He is survived by his wife, Liana; sons Mark (Kathy) Walczynski of Vadnais Heights, Minn., Jim (Debbie) Walczynski of Duluth and Marty (Mary) Bush of Cloquet; daughters Charlotte Walker of Mandeville, La., Callie Bush of Orr and Chandra Bush of Duluth; brothers John (Cathy) and Joseph, both of Duluth; a sister, Agnes Stackowitz of Duluth; grandchildren Andrea Walker, Erin, Matt and Ann Walczynski, and J.J. Bush; a great-grandson, Alexander Xavier Walker; his mother-in-law, Lauretta Klimek of North Platte, Neb.; sisters-in-law Martha and Julia Maniak of Duluth; a brother-in-law, Domonic (Mary Ann) Maniak of Minneapolis; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Friday with 6:30 p.m. rosary by the Friars of St. Francis in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Visitation continues 9 until the 10 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery.

Marlo C. Fjeld

Marlo C. Fjeld, 78, of Cambridge, Minn., formerly of Duluth, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis.

Marlo was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Horse Creek Township, McKenzie County, N.D., and graduated from Grand Rapids High School. He served in the Navy's 8th Construction Battalion in the Pacific from 1942-1946.

He married Marvine Waller of Dora Lake, Minn., on Jan. 11, 1946, and owned and operated a dairy farm near Duluth. He was a member of Local 11 of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union in Duluth for 30 years.

His hobby included artistic metal work, including the medallion on St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

He is survived by his wife, Marvine of Cambridge; a son, Neil of New Brighton, Minn.; daughters Carol (Mike) Van Wagner of Stanwood, Wash., and Vernell (Rob) Soderstrom of Lakeland, Fla.; grandchildren Sherri (Jerry) Simonson of Snohomish, Wash., Kristin (Luis) Hernandez and Shayne and Erik Soderstrom, all of Lakeland, Fla.; a great-grandson, Christian Simonson of Snohomish; and a brother, Donald (Marcella) Fjeld of Floodwood.

Service: 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Assembly of God Church, Cambridge. Interment in Fort Snelling, St. Paul.

Mary Petoletti

Mary Petoletti, 89, of West Fifth Street passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth.

She was born Oct. 25, 1911, in Duluth to Vincent and Mamie (Perfetto) Pezzanito. Mary attended Duluth public schools and the Duluth Business University. She married Carl Petoletti in 1935. He passed away in 1980.

Mary was cafeteria manager for the Board of Education for 27 years. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and she loved her grandchildren.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; a son, James; and sisters Nona Signorelli and Dorothy Miller.

She is survived by her sons, Ray and Richard (Joann) Petoletti, both of Duluth; sisters Caroline Gradine and Clara Rossetti, both of Duluth; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Private family services will be held. Burial will take place in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Gladys (Prescott) Koschine

Gladys (Prescott) Koschine, 93, of London Road died Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2001, in Duluth.

She was born Feb. 10, 1907, in Duluth to Anna and George Prescott. She lived in Duluth her entire life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick W. Koschine; sisters Bernice Nygaard and Adeline Samas; and a brother, George W. Prescott.

Gladys is survived by her brother, Robert K. (Ann) Prescott of Duluth; and numerous loving and special nieces and nephews.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday in the Dougherty Funeral Home, the Rev. Craig Carlson officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home.

Lydia Nellie "May" Preston

Lydia Nellie "May" Preston, 88, of Duluth died Wednesday, May 2, 2001, at foster care in Duluth.

She was born in Hume, Mo., on Oct. 8, 1912, to Oliver and Vadia (Leslie) Plumb. Lydia had been a resident of Cotton for 43 years and then had lived in Duluth since 1988.

She was a homemaker and shared a life of farming and flea market selling with her husband, Frank. She was a member of AARP and the Cotton Senior Citizen Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Frank Woodruff Preston in 1992; her son, David in 1988; three grandchildren; her parents, Oliver and Vadia (Leslie) Plumb; sisters Mabel Elaine Meyers and Olive Leona Wood; brothers Oliver Clayton Plumb, William Robert Plumb, Harry Donald Plumb and Orville Dale Plumb; a sister-in-law, Reba Plumb; and brothers-in-law, Harry Meyers and Joe Wood.

Surviving are her daughters, Rita (Dennis) McDonald of Superior and Mary (Joe) Hahn of Chetek, Wis.; sons John (Betty) and Paul (Barbara), both of Duluth, Charles (Vickie) of Cotton, Robert (Debbie) of Meadowlands and Gary (Marsha), also of Duluth; 25 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; sisters Margaret Wornstaff of Spokane, Wash., Agnes Kimery of Portland, Ore., and Mary Meyers of Chula Vista, Calif.; sisters-in-law Joan Plumb, Mildred Plumb and Phyllis Plumb; and her loving dog, Cuddles.

May opened her heart and home to many others that could have called her Mom.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and continues 10 until the 11 a.m. service Saturday in the Cotton Community Church. Burial in Lakeview cemetery, Cotton. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Gordon B. Miller

Gordon B. Miller, 76, of Hickory Street died Friday, March 2, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center after a courageous battle with leukemia for the past 20 years.

He was born Feb. 9, 1925, to Elmer and Marie Miller in Duluth. He was employed first with Western Electric, then with Chicago Northwestern Railroad. He retired after 30 years of service as the head maintenance engineer for American Bakeries in Duluth. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and just recently received a Purple Heart for his courageous actions during the war. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, VFW Post 137, American Legion Post 71, Lake Superior Chapter of Ex-POWs, American Disabled Veterans, AARP National and Lakeside Chapters and Rice Lake Plus 55 Club. His hobbies included bowling and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marie; and a brother, Russell Miller.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; a daughter, Diane (Jim) Johnson of Duluth; a son, Jerome (Diana) of Duluth; sisters June Ludwigson and Florence Lyle, both of Duluth; brothers Robert of Duluth, Clem (Marion) of Duluth, George (Myrtle) of Illinois, James of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation: 9:30 until the 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. John's Catholic Church. Military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Combined Honor Guard. Interment in Calvary cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Kenneth J. (Schnarr) Myre

Kenneth J. (Schnarr) Myre, 55, of Duluth passed away Thursday, March 1, 2001, in his residence.

He was born Sept. 3, 1945, in Duluth and spent most of his life in the Duluth area. He was a 1963 graduate of Denfeld High School and proudly played goalie for the Denfeld Hunters hockey team. Throughout Ken's life, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, writing and had a wonderful sense of humor, which showed through his poetry and many rhymes.

He was preceded in death by his father, Keith Schnarr; stepfather, John "Jack" Myre; and a brother, Todd Myre.

Survivors include his mother, Joyce Myre of Duluth; a brother, Scott (Nancy) Myre of Hermantown; a sister, Becky (Pete) Shearer of Grand Canyon, Ariz., many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Fr. John Petrich officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Oscar C. Johnson

Oscar C. Johnson, 84, died Friday, March 2, 2001, in Lake Haven Nursing Home with his family by his side.

Oscar was born March 15, 1916, and was a lifelong resident of Duluth. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1934 and married Margaret Olson in 1947. He was a World War II veteran and was co-owner of Priola and Johnson Inc. and Aggregate Sales Co.

Oscar was an active leader and member of Norton Park United Methodist Church and was instrumental in the building of Riverview United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Norton Park Friendship Club and a leader in Norton Park Community Club. He was a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge, AAD Temple of the Shrine, Scottish Rite Bodies and was past chapter dad of Eunity Chapter Order of DeMolay.

Oscar loved children and music and was a member of his church choir and the Friendship Singers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Hannah Johnson; a brother, Gusty; and sisters Hildur, Gertie, Clara and Anna.

Oscar is survived by his wife, Margaret; his brother, Henry (Joyce) Johnson; his son, Gerald (Sandra) Henkel-Johnson; daughters Kathy (Dean) Moland, Carol Johnson, Bonnie Ritchie, Julie (Steve) Gaffney and Chris (Todd) Milosevich; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is especially grateful to the staff at Lake Haven Nursing Home for the special care they gave to Oscar.

Visitation: 3 until the 4 p.m. service Sunday in Riverview United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Norton Park United Methodist Church, 436 N. 79th Ave. W., Duluth, 55807, which Oscar referred to as "Our Country Church in the City." Interment in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.
