Harley Jane Larva

Harley Jane Larva, two-day old daughter of Janie and Michael Larva of Wrenshall died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center surrounded by her family.

Besides her parents, Harley is survived by a half sister, Ashely Bender of Wrenshall; a half brother, Aaron Larva of Superior; her maternal grandparents, John and June Lukovsky of Superior; paternal grandparents Jerry and Nancy Borske of Wrenshall and James and Terry Larva of Cincinnati; paternal great-grandparents Eino and Gladys Lundeen of Duluth; and many aunts and uncles.

Gathering of family and friends: 2 until the 4 p.m. memorial service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Steven Staurseth officiating. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Abigail Rose Peterson

Abigail Rose Peterson, 5, of Sleepy Eye, Minn., died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, in New Ulm Medical Center, New Ulm, Minn.

She is survived by her parents, DuWayne and Shannon (Duffy) Peterson; a brother, Samuel; paternal grandparents Jim and Melva (Young) Peterson of Sleepy Eye; maternal grandparents Larry and Shari (Rangel) Duffy of Duluth; and great-grandparents Ralph and Ruth Rangel of McAllen, Texas.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Sturm Funeral Home, 301 Third Ave. S.W., Sleepy Eye, MN 56085. Visitation continues from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Friday in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Evan, Minn. Arrangements by Sturm Funeral Home, (507) 794-5221.

Ruth E. Takkunen

Ruth E. Takkunen, 90, of Lake Nebagamon died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.

She was born Jan. 2, 1911, in Duluth to Conrad and Alma Johnson. She graduated from Denfeld High School and from Duluth State Teachers College, now UMD. She was an elementary teacher at Tamarack, Wright and Cromwell and had lived in Wright, Superior, Minneapolis, Boynton Beach, Fla., and Lake Nebagamon. She was married to Arne Takkunen in June of 1940, and they celebrated their 60th anniversary last year. After retirement, she moved to Lake Nebagamon and spent winters in Florida.

While living in Wright and Superior, she was active in church and community activities. She was a former member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church and Superior Memorial Hospital. She was a former Sunday school teacher, church organist, Cub Scout leader and PTA member. She was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Nebagamon and St. Andrews Church in Lake Worth, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Margaret.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Arne; sons Philip (Gretchen) of San Clemente, Calif., Paul (Kiett) of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Daniel (Barbara) of Madison, Wis.; a brother, Aldur of Wright; a sister, Sigrid of Walworth, Wis.; grandchildren Koert, Karine, Kim, Jill, Erika, Erik, Kristin and Justin; great-grandchildren Jack, Grace, Ella and Lauren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Monday in Trinity Lutheran Church, Lake Nebagamon, Pastor Arvid Sundet and Pastor Lee Boleman officiating. Arrangements by Thompson-Hegstrom Funeral Home.

James Howard Sundvick

James "Jim" Howard Sundvick, 39, of Duluth died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

Jim was born in Duluth June 5, 1961, to Howard and Mary Sundvick. He graduated from Denfeld High School in 1982. He had worked at Goodwill, Hardee's and United Health Care. He had been employed at UDAC in Duluth as a clerical worker.

Jim loved animals and was a big fan of music, wrestling and vintage comedy. He had an excellent sense of humor.

He was preceded in death by his father, Howard, in 1994.

Jim is survived by his mother, Mary, of Duluth; a brother, Richard R. (Mardy) Sundvick, of Colorado; sisters Marita A. (Donald) Johnson of Duluth, Linda S. (George) Gillespie of South Dakota and Patricia L. Edwards of Duluth; a special friend, Nick Wakanabo; his nieces and nephews, Annette Goyette of Duluth, Suzette Goyette of Minneapolis, Daniel Sundvick of Colorado and Timothy and Charles Smith of South Dakota; two grand-nieces; two grand-nephews; and many dear and close friends.

Memorial Service: 10 a.m. Monday in the Chapel at Chris Jensen Nursing Home, the Rev. Father Thomas Foster officiating. Arrangements by Hegstrom Family Funeral Homes, Foley Chapel, 5405 Ramsey St., 624-4838.

Mary Christian Green

Mary Christian Green, 52, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, after battling an illness.

Mary was born Jan. 1, 1949, in Duluth. She attended Stanbrook Hall and graduated from Duluth East in 1967. She graduated from the Duluth Beauty Academy in 1968. Mary worked in Duluth and Tucson, Ariz., as a certified nursing assistant. She was happiest being a caregiver.

Mary was preceded in death by her mother, Ethel Stromquist Vanderveer.

She is survived by her daughter, Primula Green; her special granddaughter, Shanice Green; her former husband, Leonard Green; and many relatives and friends.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Margaret Alice (Nordin) Jacobson

Margaret Alice (Nordin) Jacobson, 81, of Indianapolis, formerly of Duluth died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001.

She was a retired school teacher who taught for 18 years in Duluth.

Survivors include her husband, William A.; daughters Linda DeRoy, Lori Jacobson, Lisa Norwood; a son, Lance Jacobson; and eight grandchildren.

Viewing: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Tuesday in Legacy Funeral Alternatives at Memorial Park, Indianapolis (800) 844-0700. Memorials to American Cancer Society. Burial in Memorial Park cemetery.

Ailie Hammer Gorkoski

Ailie Hammer Gorkoski, 80, formerly of West Fifth Street and Greysolon Plaza died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 14, 1920, to Matt and Matilda Haikonen in Cromwell. She moved to Duluth as a teen-ager and graduated from Central High School.

She was a life member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 71.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, William Martin Hammer, in 1969; her second husband, Chester Thomas Gorkoski, in 1983; sisters Esther Valentine and Emma Clifford; and a grandson, Benjy Kettner, in 1983.

Ailie is survived by her daughters, Sharon Lillmars Lamb of St. Paul and Diane (Fred) Watson of Tracyton, Wash.; sisters Effie Martin and Elvera Posch, both of Duluth; grandchildren Sheri (Melvin) Schnoor of Puyallup, Wash., William Lillmars of St. Paul, Reginald Meyers of Tracyton and Adron Lamb of St. Paul; great-grandchildren Ailie Rae Lillmars and Tristen C. Meyer; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Service and burial will be held in July. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors - Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Thomas Doucette

Thomas Doucette, 75, of Battle Lake, Minn., died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001, in the VA Medical Center, Fargo, N.D.

He was born Aug. 12, 1925, in Duluth, the son of Perry and Ida (Pries) Doucette. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant in the 370th Bombardment Squadron 13th Air Force both during World War II and the Korean War.

He owned and operated a liquor off-sale business in Duluth and then worked in advertising sales for Braun and Bigelow Inc. He had been residing in the Battle Lake area since 1988.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by twin brothers, Richard Doucette of Fife, Wash., and Robert Doucette of Duluth.

Visitation: 9 until the 10:30 a.m. service Monday in Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Battle Lake, Minn., Father Paul Folsom officiating. Burial in Fort Snelling National cemetery, St. Paul. Arrangements by Glende-Johnson-Nelson & Nilson Funeral Home, Battle Lake (218) 736-7064.

Mary Christian Green

Mary Christian Green, 52, died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, after battling an illness.

Memorial service: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Lillie Ruth Hellyer Stowe

Centenarian

Lillie Ruth Hellyer Stowe, 100, formerly of 103rd Avenue West died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in Virginia Convalescent Center, Virginia.

She was born Nov. 28, 1900, to C.P. and Kate Hellyer in Russell, Iowa. She was a Duluth resident from 1946 to 1992, when she moved to Virginia. On April 13, 1924, she married William Forrest Stowe of Cross Lake, Minn., and was happily married until his death in 1984. A tireless worker her whole life, Lillie often recounted her times as a teacher of a one-room school house in Fifty Lakes, Minn., logging camp cook and Dr. Fifield's housekeeper. She was most proud, however, of her role as mother and grandmother, instilling in those she loved just what it meant to be a "family." Lillie's home was always open to anyone who needed her love. She will be dearly missed.

Lillie was preceded in death by her husband, William F.; a son, James William (Sonny) Stowe; a daughter, Edna Lillian Gustafson; a brother, Perry Hellyer; and a great-granddaughter, Emily Gustafson.

She is survived by daughters Irma (Robert) Sloan of Cherry and Helen (Bob) Wennen of Cosmos, Minn.; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Ray (Lori) Gustafson of Tamarack, Minn.; and a daughter-in-law, Lois (Butch) Loveland of International Falls.

Having just celebrated her 100th birthday among friends and relatives, she will be remembered with a private memorial service 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Burial in Bethany cemetery, Hermantown. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Edith Klang

Edith Klang, 92, formerly of Duluth died Sunday, Feb. 11, 2001, in Arrowhead Health Care Center, Eveleth.

Richard James Hagen Sr.

Richard James Hagen Sr. of Luzerne Road in Duluth passed away Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in Superior in the home of his daughter and son-in-law after a courageous battle against cancer.

He was born in Duluth June 8, 1931, to Oscar and Edith (LaMora) Hagen. On Feb. 20, 1960, he married Eileen Kari in Duluth. Richard worked at Georgia Pacific (Superwood) for 38 years as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. He retired in June of 1993. Richard also served in the Army National Guard. He enjoyed sailing and was active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, having served in various positions including Flotilla Commander. Richard loved camping, fishing, building and flying radio-controlled airplanes, Harley motorcycles and Hawaii.

He loved his children and his grandchildren so much.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Duane; a sister, Cheryl Willoughby-Renoud; an infant stillborn son; and his father-in-law, Eino Kari.

Richard is survived by his wife of 41 years, Eileen; sons Richard (Linda) Hagen Jr. and Mark (Holly) Hagen; his daughter, Michelle (Joseph) Szybczynski; his mother-in-law, Ida Kari; brother-in-law, Wayne (Carol) Kari; his precious grand-darlings, Miles, Austin, Casey and Auriana Hagen and Brittany and Amanda Szybczynski; step-grandchildren Amelia and Andysue Eickmeyer; nine nieces; 14 grandnieces and nephews; and his precious dog, Keiki.

Memorial Service: 3 p.m. Sunday in Family of God Lutheran Church, 4097 Martin Road with Pastor Gary Guptill presiding. Private burial of cremated remains at a later date. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Walter Hartley Paulson

Walter Hartley Paulson, 89, formerly of Duluth died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in his residence in Rochester, Minn.

Walter was born in Duluth to Paul E. and Inga Paulson, who were from North Dakota. Walter was a self-taught creative craftsman and skilled mechanic. He lived in Duluth; Youngstown, Ohio; and Newport News, Va.; before moving to Rochester, where he was a member of the Baptist Church. He was the owner/manager of Youngstown Boat and Supply Co. in Youngstown.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Jean, in 1989; two brothers; and four sisters.

Walter is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St. Interment in Culver.
