William B. Mraz
William B. Mraz, 73, of Exeter Street died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in his home.
He was born March 21, 1927, in Hopkins, Minn., to William J. and Clara (Wosmeck) Mraz. He grew up and worked on the family farm in Wright until he entered the military. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater.
William married
Nancy J. Bruno in 1949 in Cromwell, and they moved to Duluth that same year. He worked for U.S. Steel Duluth Works for 33 years and was able to retire the year the plant closed. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and simply loved the solitude of being in the great outdoors. After he became disabled, he enjoyed watching boxing and auto racing, especially NASCAR.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Nancy on Feb. 18, 1991; a brother, Melvin; and a sister, Maryanne McKenna.
William is survived by sons Richard "Sonny" of Duluth, Lonny and Kerry (Tina), both of Minneapolis; daughters Sharon (Larry) Johnson and Debbie (Dave) Semmelroth, both of Duluth; a brother, Stanley (Iola) of Barnum; sisters Virginia (Frank) Nordstrand of Proctor and Darlene (Ernie) Poink of Barnum; grandchildren Rick, Ryan, Steven, Jacob, Cassie, Trudie and David Jr.; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his feline companion, Mittens.
Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. service Tuesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Spring burial in Forest Hill cemetery, Cromwell.
Doris A. Severson
Doris A. Severson, 85, formerly of West Second Street died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, in Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center.
She was born April 5, 1915, at home at French River, Minn., to Erick and Anna (Pearson) Johnson. She lived and worked on the family farm until moving to Duluth in 1931. She was a cook for several Duluth restaurants.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Robert A. Severson; sisters Vera and Mabel Johnson, and Florence Maher; and brothers Hugo and Lloyd Johnson.
She is survived by a grandniece, Joanne L. DeBiaso Gardiner of Hayward, Calif.; grandnephews Lloyd DeBiaso of Arleta, Calif., and Richard DeBiaso of Hayward, Calif.; several cousins including Dolly (Ward) Amundsen of Duluth; a dear friend since childhood, Edith Jankowski of Duluth; and a special friend, Oscar Odegard of Duluth.
Visitation: noon until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Spring burial in Bethany cemetery.
Doris Mae Gribbon
Doris Mae Gribbon, 76, of Hermantown died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, in her home.
Doris was born Nov. 2, 1924, in Hermantown to Roman and Ethel (Curtis) Miernicki. She retired in 1987 from Hermantown Public Schools where she last worked as a custodian. Her hobbies included singing with the Sweet Adelines, ceramics, needlework and league bowling. She enjoyed playing cards with friends and her weekly bingo game. Doris always found time to listen and cared deeply for her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Gregg in 1979; and a granddaughter, Leslie in 2000.
Doris is survived by her husband of 45 years, Clyde; a brother, Donald (Gail) Miernicki of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; daughters Terry Benson of Las Vegas and Wendy Gribbon of Duluth; sons Randy and Brian, both of Duluth; a daughter-in-law, Marianne Hendrickson of Germany; grandchildren Todd (Michelle) and Darren Benson, both of Las Vegas, Kelly Hendrickson of Germany, and Jamie and Megan Gribbon, both of Duluth; great-grandchildren Marcel, Sina and Nicole; five nieces; a nephew; numerous cousins; and her lifelong best friend, Joan Curtis.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in Dougherty Funeral Home, Duluth.
Nancy Lainen-Keussen
Nancy Lainen-Keussen, 50, of Redway, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2001.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Sathya Keussen, of Redway; her parents, Bill and JoAnn Lainen, of McGregor; and sisters Karen (Steve) Jarvi of Cloquet and Peggy Anderson of Duluth.
Memorial service: 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, in United Baptist-Christian Church, 830 E. First St., Duluth.
Norman Elmer Roland Schmidt
Norman Elmer Roland Schmidt, 91, of Albert Lea, Minn., died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in Albert Lea Medical Center.
Norman was born Nov. 6, 1909, to Ernest August and Bertha Wilhelmina (Schlenz) Schmidt in Swanville, Minn. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Swanville. Norman attended Swanville Community School, graduated from Swanville High School and then continued his education at Dunwoody Institute. Norman was united in marriage to Eula Virginia Ritter on Oct. 7, 1933, in Little Falls. He worked as a county highway engineer for Todd County from 1934 to 1957. He then worked as a State Aid District engineer in Duluth from 1957 until his retirement in 1975. Norman then worked part time as a consultant for the city of Hermantown until his second retirement in 1988. He had been a resident of the Good Samaritan Center since 1991.
Norman was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers. He was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Norman was active in church throughout his lifetime. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and other outdoor activities. He also enjoyed playing bridge, traveling and gardening. Norman enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eula, in 1994; brothers Edward, Irvin and Leonard Schmidt; and sisters Elma Schmidt and Pearl Anderson.
Norman is survived by a son, Bruce of Plymouth, Minn.; a daughter, Gail (Jim) Thurnau of Albert Lea; grandchildren Katie Thurnau and her partner, Dale Tews, both of Albert Lea, Lisa (Peter) Bakken of Fairfax, Minn., Steve Nerison of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Jeff and Brad Berrington, both of Minneapolis; great-grandsons Logan and Kane Tews; brothers Clarence of Duluth and Clifford of Kelliher, Minn.; and a sister, Hylma Hughes of Kelliher.

Marion F. Iverson
Marion F. Iverson, 82, of Hermantown passed away Tuesday, Feb. 20, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 13, 1919, to William and Mabel Olson in Thomson, Minn. She grew up in Jay Cooke Park and graduated from Esko High School.
She was a licensed practical nurse and had worked at Miller-Dwan Hospital and retired from Cook Home after many years of service. She loved quilting, wood carving, rosemaling, the outdoors and especially her flower beds.
She was a life member of the Sons of Norway and a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Ruth Carlson and Dorothy Partika; and her husband, Einar, in 1973.
Marion is survived by her daughter, Joan (Clair) Strandlie of Duluth; her son, Larry (Susan) Esko of Duluth; stepchildren Bob (Sue) Iverson of Hawaii, Betty Braun of San Diego and Danny Iverson of Drummond; sisters Bernice Schumann of Sandstone and Phyllis (Ray) Peterson of Deer River; a brother, Dean (Vivian) Olson of Mission, Texas; grandchildren Paula, Jill, Gary, Lance, Nicole, Jody and Shelly; step-grandchildren Becky, Elizabeth and Julie; great-grandchildren Cassie, Nicholas, Jessica, Peter, Samantha, Emily and Haley; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy M. Decker
Dorothy M. Decker, 74, of Miller Hill Manor died Sunday Feb. 18, 2001, in the Waters of Park Point health-care facility.
She was born Oct. 17, 1926, to Arthur and Ruth Maki in Biwabik, where she also graduated from high school as class valedictorian. Dorothy attended Duluth Business University in 1945 and lived in Duluth until her death.
During her career, she worked at the University of Minnesota Duluth as secretary to Provost Raymond Gibson and later for the Board of Education as secretary to principal Lillian Hanson at Lincoln Elementary School. Following her marriage to Theodore Decker Jr., she helped out as a substitute secretary at various Duluth schools and in the administrative building. Her hobby of raising shamrock house plants turned into a small business, and she became known as the "Shamrock Lady."
Dorothy was a member of Lakeside AARP.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978; her father in 1951; and her mother in 1992.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Theodore (Ann) Decker III of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Helen G. Howard
Helen G. Howard, 92, of Duluth died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.
She was born in Superior Jan. 7, 1909, to Ignace and Veronica Grenewich. She had lived in New Duluth most of her young years and attended Stowe and Morgan Park Schools. After graduating she moved to Chicago and worked for Marshall Field's, Merchandiser Antiques, Foreign Arts and Jeweling Food Stores. She had also resided in Lago Vista, Texas, before moving back to Duluth in 1983. Helen was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. She also enjoyed bowling, gardening, sewing and embroidery.
Helen was preceded in death by her first husband, Hugh Patterson; her second husband, Ken Howard; a sister, Ann Vogt; and a brother, Peter Grenewich.
She is survived by sons Donald (Maureen) Patterson of Herron, Mich., and Peter (Marilyn) Patterson of Akron, Ohio; sisters Maryann (Reidar) Pettersen of New Duluth and Agnes Lundstrom of Superior; three grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Jennie "Jay" Victoria Engman
Jennie "Jay" Victoria Engman, 87, passed away Feb. 18, 2001, in Reno, Nev.
Jay was born in Ironwood and spent most of her life in Duluth, most recently in The Pines and St. Anne's. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. She had been active as a Brownie Troop leader, Sunday school teacher, member of First Lutheran Church, Elizabeth Circle, Lakeside Garden Club and Lakeside Chapter of the Association of Retired Persons.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter S. Engman in 1978; her mother and father; a sister, Betty Short of Duluth; a brother, Edward White of Barnsville, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Amy Erickson of Plymouth, Minn.
Jay is survived by daughters Susan (Jack) McLeod of Reno and Marcia Erickson of Plymouth; a sister, Ollie Scanlon of Bemidji; a brother, Robert White of Portland, Ore.; AFS daughter Raquel (Leonard) Schrier of Bloomfield, Mich.; grandchildren Lisa (Tom) Stephenson of San Francisco, James McLeod of Mishawaka, Ind., Heather (Rob) Yowell of Los Angeles, Scott McLeod of San Francisco and Michael Erickson of Plymouth; and great-grandchildren Grace Stephenson and Cameron Yowell.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Saturday in the McLeod home, 4317 Caughlin Parkway, Reno, the Rev. Carl Wilfrid of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church officiating. No visitation will be held. The family would appreciate memorials being given in her name to the Arthritis Foundation.
Mabel Victoria Anderson
Mabel Victoria Anderson, 83, Duluth, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001, in her home.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Ellen Anderson; and a brother, Stanley.
She is survived by her sister, Fern Nelson of LeGrange Park, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She will be missed by her family and friends.
Memorial service: will be in the spring in Augustana Lutheran Church on Midway Road. Internment will be in Midway Lutheran cemetery. Arrangements are by Fred Olson Mortuary.
Corrine Evalyn Erickson
Corrine Evalyn Erickson, 86, of Duluth died Monday, Feb. 19, 2001, at home.
She was born July 6, 1914, in Sand Creek, Minn., to Albert Leonard and Ragnhild Sahlen. She was a member of Fond du Lac Community Church.
Corrine was preceded in death by her husband, Edward E. on March 18, 1977.
She is survived by sisters Ruth Zebrasky of Bruno, Minn., Violet Landowski of Granada Hills, Calif., Margot Glienke of Sandstone and Doris (Paul) Hamburg of Roscommon, Mich.; a brother, Robert (Lois) Sahlen of Askov; and several nieces and nephews.
