Patricia R. VanReese

Patricia R. VanReese, 50, of Nashwauk died Saturday, March 31, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center with her family by her side after a courageous two and a half year battle with cancer.

She was born in Duluth and had resided here until 1977 when she moved to Nashwauk. She had been employed as senior center director at the Grand Rapids YMCA from 1993 to 2000 and as owner/operator of Sjo-Pro Tours North for the past year.

She was a member of Bethany Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Sjoblom, March 29, 2000.

She is survived by her husband, David; daughters Jeannine (Brian) Steel of Bovey and Shelly VanReese of Grand Rapids; her mother, Ruth Sjoblom, of Duluth; a sister, Linda (John) House, of Wrenshall; brothers Ronald Sjoblom of Duluth, Daniel (Darcy) Sjoblom of North Pole, Alaska, and William Sjoblom of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Tarryn, Gabriel and Benjamin Steel and Antonio and Aliksandr VanReese; and her three dogs.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bethany Baptist Church, 6700 Grand Ave., Duluth. If so desired, memorials may be directed to Star of the North Animal Shelter, c/o David VanReese. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

George L. Gunderson

George L. Gunderson, 91, of 92nd Avenue West died Friday, March 30, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.

He was born April 10, 1909, in Cumberland, Wis., to Martin and Martha (Bergstrom) Gunderson. He grew up and attended school in Barronett, Wis. He had been a Duluth resident for the past 74 years. George had been employed as a first helper at U.S. Steel's Duluth Works for 41 years, retiring in 1967. He married Jane R. McLimans in Carlton, and they had been married for more than 50 years at the time of her death. George was an amateur baseball pitcher in his youth. He was an avid Minnesota Twins fan, watching every televised baseball game. He was also a Duluth Dukes and UMD hockey fan. In earlier years, he enjoyed hunting.

He was affiliated with United Protestant Church and had been a member of the Steelworkers' Union.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jane, April 12, 1996; brothers Carl and Clem Gunderson; and sisters Edna Schilling and Florence Hayes.

George is survived by his son, Martin (Ellen) Gunderson, of St. Paul; a nephew, Michael Hayes; and a niece, Marilyn Gay.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel, the Rev. Phil Garrison officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Memorials to United Protestant Church would be appreciated. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors - Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W., 624-5745.

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson, 90, of Duluth, died peacefully Sunday, March 18, 2001, in the home of her daughter in Prior Lake, Minn.

She was a lifelong resident and pioneer of the Fond du Lac neighborhood of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer "Al" Peterson.

She is survived by her son Murray (Marilyn) Peterson; her daughter Claudia (Dick) Booth; four grandsons, Robin (Cheryl) Peterson, Shelby (Gwen) Peterson, Cory and Scott Booth; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Brandon, Mitchell and Misty; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Memorial service and celebration of her life: noon April 13 at her home in Fond du Lac. Family and friends are invited anytime after 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Prior Lake Library children's section, Attn: Hilary Toren, 16210 Eagle Creek Avenue, Prior Lake, MN 55372.

Roma Virginia Stromquist

Roma Virginia Stromquist, 80, of Duluth, died Thursday, March 21, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.

Roma was born Sept. 20, 1920, in Duluth to Agnes Mae and Anton Walter Foryziak. She attended Polish school and graduated from Duluth Central High School and Duluth Business University. During World War II, she volunteered as a nurse's aide for the Red Cross in Duluth hospitals.

She was a championship golfer and lifetime member of Ridgeview Country Club, where she served as an officer in the Women's Golf Association. An excellent golfer, she won numerous trophies and prizes in Arrowhead regional tournaments, Nemadji, Lester Park, Cloquet, Hibbing, Two Harbors, Ridgeview and Northland Country Club.

A true outdoorswoman, Roma was also an avid hunter and fisherwoman. She loved to hunt partridge, deer and ducks and was a very good shot. She was an ardent fly fisherwoman and even tied her own flies.

Roma participated in many other activities, including slalom skiing, bowling and bridge playing.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Paul H.; brothers Gene and Marsh Forsyziak, both of Duluth; a sister-in-law, Rachael Stromquist; a brother-in-law, John Stromquist; nine nephews; and two nieces.

Visitation: 10:30 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Saturday in Benedictine Chapel.

Alice Catherine Poppenberg Lessard

Alice Catherine Poppenberg Lessard, 92, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Duluth.

She was born in Duluth July 11, 1908, to Reihnold and Sarah Englund. She was a lifelong resident of Proctor and Duluth area and wintered in Brownsville, Texas for 30 years. She graduated from Denfeld High School and Young and Hurst Business University. She was executive secretary for Bridgeman Russell Creameries.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Edith, Ethel and Linea; her first husband and father of her children, Delbert H. Poppenberg; her second husband, Lawrence Nelson; and her beloved daughter, Lola M. Goerts.

Alice is survived by her husband, Jay Lessard of Nopeming; a daughter, Gail Korcha of Yucca Valley, Calif., sons Rodney (Karen) Poppenberg of Island Lake and Phillip (Sandra) Poppenberg of Hermantown; a son-in-law, Richard Goerts of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; a brother, Robert Englund of Lake Nichols; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Alice had dedicated her life to her family.

Visitation: 1 until the 2 p.m. service Saturday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Pastor Jim Hagen officiating. Burial in Oneota cemetery. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Grace Louise Holmstrom

Grace Louise Holmstrom, 94, of Duluth died Monday, March 19, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.

Born in Winona, Minn., on April 12, 1906, Grace was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She enjoyed being with family and friends as well as her various volunteer work throughout the years, most recently at King Manor and Tri-Towers. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur "Art"; a daughter, Doris Falk; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Mahai.

She is survived by sons Thomas "Tom" and John "Jack" Mahai, both of Duluth, Richard "Dick" Mahai of Reno, Nev.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Private family service will be held in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Ennichement in Oneota cemetery.

Clarence K. Nylund Sr.

Clarence K. Nylund Sr., 75, of Vinland Street died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born in Wright and moved to Duluth after serving the Navy during World War II. He was a sergeant for the Duluth Police Department, where he worked for 25 years and retired in 1984. He had previously worked in Western Electric and had also operated Warning Lights Inc.

Clarence had served with the Marine Reserve after World War II and had been a member of Euclid Masonic Lodge 198 AF & AM, Scottish Rite-Valley of Duluth and had been active in the Dune Buggy Patrol and Pipes & Drum Corp in Aad Temple Shrine. He had been a member of West End VFW Post 137, National Rifle Association and Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sigrid and Matt Nylund; and a brother, Carl.

Clarence is survived by his wife, Gloria; sons Clarence Jr. (Susie) of Saginaw and Richard (Connie) of Superior; a daughter, Debra (John) Portesan of Seattle; grandchildren Chris Nylund, Traci Nemetz, Jennifer Furey, Stacy Oja, Sara Portesan, Danny Nylund, Kelly Nylund and Michael Powers; and great-grandchildren Matthew, Rebecca, Josh and a future great-grandchild to be born in May.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today with 5 p.m. Masonic service in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service noon Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 701 N. Third Ave., Proctor. Burial in Wright Community cemetery, Wright. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors-Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Florence Ardella Dwyer

Florence Ardella Dwyer, 93, of Regent Street died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home.

A lifelong Duluth resident, she was born Jan. 29, 1908, to Charles Fredrick and Anna Elizabeth (Fischer) Potswald. She had worked as an operator in Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. Following her retirement from the phone company, she groomed dogs out of her home for many years.

She was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Telephone Pioneers of America and AARP.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Eugene, Ella, Ann, Alma, Louise, Carl, Leona, Herbert; and her husband, James.

She is survived by her sister, Henrietta "Etta" Potswald of Duluth; nieces and nephews, Eugene (Dorothy) Bierwerth, Ione (Kirk) Bishop, Carl (Donna) Potswald, James (Beverly) Potswald, Elizabeth (George) Green, Susan (Gail) Ziemski, Robert Potswald, Janet (Kenneth) McGough, William (Rebecca) Potswald, Judith (Gerald) Bakken, Diane (Robert) Rindal; numerous grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. today in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel and 10:30 until 11 a.m. service Friday in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Burial in Park Hill cemetery. A. Ruth Brandt

A. Ruth Brandt, 86, formerly of East First Street and Morgan Park died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Viewcrest Health Center.

She was born in Virginia to Johan and Margit (Rue) Brandt and lived in Duluth for 50 years. She graduated from Virginia High School and Duluth Teachers College. Ruth taught music in the Proctor school system for 30 years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters Iva, Lucille and Janet.

She is survived by a son, Richard (Ardis) of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; a sister, Lois Miller of Texas; and grandchildren Bill, Linda and Steve.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Saturday in First Lutheran Church, Crystal Lake, Minn. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Barbara Chalmers (Smoyer) Dudderar

Barbara Chalmers (Smoyer) Dudderar, 82, passed away Tuesday, March 20, 2001, in Duluth.

Mrs. Dudderar was born July 20, 1918, in Clairton, Pa. She was a graduate of Clairton High School and West Virginia University. She was a longtime resident of Pleasant Hills, Pittsburgh, Pa., where she was an active member of Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church and Pleasant Hills Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick Austin Dudderar Sr., who served as president of U.S. Steel Engineers and Consultants in Pittsburgh until his retirement from UEC in 1982.

She is survived by her children, Mary Barbara Dalby of Toledo, Ohio, Dixon Harvey Dudderar of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Frederick Austin Dudderar Jr. of Duluth; and grandchildren Megan Elizabeth Dalby, Emily Katelyn Dudderar, Rachel Alexa Dudderar, Leah Catherine Dudderar, Julie Christine Dudderar and Allyson Mae Dudderar.
