Kevin Jay Foley

Kevin Jay Foley, 28, of West Second Street died suddenly Sunday, April 8, 2001, in Methodist Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

He was born May 11, 1972, in Duluth to Donald and Joanna (Erickson) Foley. Kevin worked in the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center as a manager in food service.

He was a member of Duluth Bible Church, played football for the Twins Bar and was part of the winning team of state champions in the year 2000. Kevin enjoyed computers, fishing, reading and music.

He is survived by his parents, Donald and Joanna Foley of Duluth; a sister, Lisa Foley and her fiance, James Farbelow of St. Paul; her maternal grandfather, Carl Erickson of Florence, Ore.; aunts Christine (Michael) White of Biwabik and Sandra (James) Leeson of Duluth; a nephew, Louis; and cousins Steven, Marnie, Cindy, Jimmy, Pat, Mike, Barb and Karen.

Visitation: 1:30 until the 2:30 p.m. service Friday in Forest Hill cemetery Chapel. Burial in Forest Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Elmer A. Pierson

Elmer A. Pierson, 93, longtime Duluth resident, died Friday, April 6, 2001, in Lake Haven Manor.

He was born in Tioga, N.D., and served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe with the Army during World War II. He was employed with Coolerator and as a millwright with the Scott-Graft Co. for more than 27 years, retiring in 1969. Uncle Al was a member of Elim Lutheran Church, Fox Sutherland VFW Post No. 6320, the Moose Lodge No. 1478, and he enjoyed fishing and watching baseball. His wife, Ellen, died in 1973.

He will be sadly missed by several nieces and nephews, including Gerald and Kathy Marshall of Duluth, Robert and Diane Marshall of Duluth and Linda Pearson of Minneapolis; and a sister-in law, Doris (Bert) Myrhman of Duluth.

Services were held Tuesday, April 10, in Elim Lutheran Church. Burial in Oneota cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth VFW Honor Guard. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave W.

Irene Virginia Swor

Irene Virginia Swor, 89, formerly of West Central Entrance, died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Benedictine Health Center.

She was born June 15, 1911, in Duluth to John and Martha Novitzki. She graduated from Central High School in 1928 and from the Duluth Teachers College in 1930. Irene was a member of First Presbyterian Church and an active leader in Christian education for the Highland Presbyterian Church. Irene was a life member of the PTA and active in Duluth Heights politics. She enjoyed gardening and loved nature.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Mitchell; sons Michael, Timothy and Daniel; a grandson, Steven Calixte; and a brother, Harry Novitzki.

She is survived by daughters Claudia (Norman) Johnson of Duluth, Marianne (Fred) Calixte of Cambridge, Ohio, Evonne (Glenn) Geer of Duluth, Bonnie (Jerry) Walters of North Redington Beach, Fla.; a son, David (Michelle Stronach) Swor of Superior; a daughter-in-law, Patricia Patronas-Swor of Hermantown; 21 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with a family tribute at 6:30 p.m. in Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation continues 1 until the 2 p.m. service Monday in First Presbyterian Church, 300 East Second St. Interment in Park Hill cemetery. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Frances Tillie Karlinski

Frances Tillie Karlinski, 97, formerly of 104th Avenue West died Thursday, April 12, 2001, in Nopeming Care Center.

She was born in Browerville, Minn., and lived in Duluth 75 years. She married Nick Karlinski June 7, 1926. Nick died March 30, 1991. She was very active with St. Elizabeth Catholic Church where she sold religious articles after Mass for many years. Frances was also an excellent in-home seamstress.

She is the last survivor of nine children, brothers Paul, John, Tony and George and sisters Mary, Gertrude, Verna and Hattie; her parents, Paul and Cecelia (Baron) Bartylla; and her husband.

Surviving are daughters Vernice C. Brophy and Vernette F. Potter, both of Duluth; grandchildren Jean Vanderport, Robert M. Brophy, John Brophy, Eileen Christie, David Potter, Ronald Potter and Christopher Potter; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great- grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Frances was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Frances' family wishes to thank the Nopeming Care Center staff for their kindness and dedicated care given her over the past six years.

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Sunday with rosary prayers at 6:30 p.m. in Bell Brothers Chapel and continuing from 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church. Burial in Calvary cemetery, Superior.

Edward G. Schafer Jr.

Former Duluth Dukes pitcher

Edward G. Schafer Jr. died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

He was born to Edward and Anna Schafer near Rochester, N.Y., where he grew up and graduated from high school. He served in the Army prior to moving to Duluth and pitched for the Superior Blues and later the Duluth Dukes. He was able to pitch to many players in the Northern League, including Hank Aaron. He graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 1966 and was a self-employed architect from 1973 until 1999. Some of his favorite projects, including his dream office of the Endion Station, were the Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, City Center West, the Senior Center in Superior, and most recently, the Duluth Children's Museum which was born out of his love for children and art.

He was a member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, its Be Friender Ministry, the church council, and was very active with Skyline Rotary Club where he initiated and chaired the Health, Hunger and Humanities Program, working in Senegal, India, Egypt, Jamaica and Haiti. Besides enjoying hunting and fishing with friends and family, Ed was active with the Navy League and coached Little League baseball for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Jean Bach.

He is survived by his wife, Dona; children Lynn (Heinz) Linde of Los Crusas, N.M., Shawn (Kevin) O'Dougherty of Arden Hills, Minn., and Steve and Scott, both of Duluth; a brother, Raymond (Liz) of Tucson, Ariz.; and grandchildren John, Erin and Lauren.

Visitation: 5:30 until the 7 p.m. service of celebration Tuesday in Bell Brothers Chapel. Service 1 p.m. Wednesday in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Arrangements by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Bell Brothers Chapel, 601 N. 56th Ave. W.

Forbes A. "Swanie" Swanson

Forbes A. "Swanie" Swanson, 73, of St. Louis Park, Minn., formerly of Duluth, passed into a new life April 7, 2001.

Forbes enlisted in the Merchant Marine before World War II and served in the 188th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division. Some of his favorite aliases were Too-Ma, Dad, Big Daddy, One Gun, Bumpa, Good Buddy, Archie, Coach, Our Mailman and Mr. Disney.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brent (Sherva) Carlson.

He will be greatly missed and always remembered by his beloved wife and soulmate, Betty Ann; children Wayne (Vicki), Richard (Michel), Lyn (Richard) Carlson and Lon (Melony) Fjone; grandchildren Matthew, Shawn, Nick, Kelly, Craig, Molly, Blake, Luke and Amie; a brother, Jack (Deloris); and many other relatives and friends.

Everyone who knew him recognized the tender, generous heart within this strong man. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Methodist Hospital and the Home Care Hospice staff for their excellent care and support.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service Wednesday in Gearty-Delmore Park Chapel, Wooddale Avenue at Excelsior Boulevard, St. Louis Park. Memorials preferred to Methodist Hospital Hospice.

Dorothy L. Sero

Dorothy L. Sero, 83, formerly of Wyoming Street, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, in Chris Jensen Nursing Home.

She was born Jan. 4, 1918, in Duluth to Gilbert and Kristaphina Gulbransen. Dorothy married George L. Sero on Nov. 14, 1938, in Duluth. She retired as a food server for St. Luke's Hospital.

Dorothy attended First Lutheran Church and was a member of the Sons and Daughters of Norway. She enjoyed walking, music, especially playing the guitar and singing, gardening, and loved playing with her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 1966; a daughter, Carol Fenno; a son, Robert Sero; a brother, Grover Gulbransen; and a sister, Margaret Korby.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Marvin (Darlene) Sero of Duluth; her daughter, Pat (Joe) Pero of Melissa, Texas; grandchildren LaDonna, Donald, Teresa, Julie, Elizabeth, Christina, Sarah and Matthew; seven great-grandchildren; sisters Grace (Earling) Hellum of Skokie, Ill., and Dagmar Nordin of Duluth.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Tuesday and service 10 a.m. Wednesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel, 514 E. Third St., Chaplain Craig Carlson officiating. Burial in Park Hill cemetery, Duluth. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

John Godfrey Ring

John Godfrey Ring, 86, of East Eighth Street died Tuesday, March 27, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 23, 1914, in Nashwauk to John Thomas and Catherine (Godfrey) Ring. He graduated salutatorian of his Nashwauk High School class. He attended Hibbing Junior College and then graduated from the University of Minnesota Minneapolis with a degree in business and finance, as well as graduate work in finance from Duke University and American Institute of Banking.

John served as a captain in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

He began his career in banking as a loan officer with First National Bank in Minneapolis and also worked for Piper Jaffray in investments, also in Minneapolis. In 1963, he and his family moved to Duluth where he worked for North Shore Bank of Commerce, retiring as senior vice president of investments and loans.

John was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary and its Plus 55 Club, Serra Club of Duluth and the Kitchi Gammi Club. He was a past member and treasurer of Alpha Nu Chapter of Chi Psi fraternity in Minneapolis, the University Club in Minneapolis and the Blue Line hockey club in Duluth. He was a past member of Kiwanis Club of Duluth and Northland Country Club.

John is survived by his wife, Rosemary Coleman Ring; his son, John Coleman Ring, M.D., and his wife Adriana van Breda and grandsons Jack Breda Ring and Patrick Arelis Ring, all of Memphis, Tenn; and cousins Lucille Allard of Duluth and Ann Godfrey Trask of Hibbing.

Service 11 a.m. today in St. Michael's Church. Burial with Military Honors provided by the Duluth Combined VFW Honor Guard in Calvary cemetery. Memorials to donor's choice. Arrangements by Dougherty Funeral Home, 600 E. Second St.

Edna A. Dahl

Edna A. Dahl, 83, of Phoenix passed away peacefully Monday, Feb. 26, 2001.

Edna was born in Duluth and was a resident for 80 years. She retired in 1973 as a secretary with First National Bank.

She was a very loving person who cared about everyone. We will all miss her and the "spunk" she had. In memory of our mother and grandmother whose entire life was one of utmost goodness, love and unselfish devotion, may God give her infinite happiness.

Edna is survived by a brother, Harold Gilstad, of Port Angeles, Wash.; a son, Ronald Dahl, of Gillette, Wyo.; a daughter, Barbara Rath, of Phoenix; grandchildren Amy Rath, Terry Dahl, Rebecca Scalva, Chrissy Dahl and Alysha Dahl; and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held in Phoenix. A spring burial in Duluth is planned.

Thomas Bennett Spindler

Thomas Bennett Spindler, 75, of Las Vegas, formerly of Duluth died Thursday, March 29, 2001, in Las Vegas.

He served in the Navy during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorraine M. (Soberg); a daughter, Lynda Warner of Simi Valley, Calif.; grandsons James, Robert and Patrick Warner; a son, Dale (Ellen) of Simi Valley; grandchildren Heidi, Thomas, Nicole and Jennifer and John; and a sister, Ruth (Glen) Erickson of Duluth.

No services. Arrangements by Desert Memorial Mortuary, (702) 382-1000.

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson

Evelyn G. "Tutz" Peterson, 90, of Duluth, died peacefully Sunday, March 18, 2001, in the home of her daughter in Prior Lake, Minn.

She was a lifelong resident and pioneer of the Fond du Lac neighborhood of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Helmer "Al" Peterson.

She is survived by her son Murray (Marilyn) Peterson; her daughter Claudia (Dick) Booth; four grandsons, Robin (Cheryl) Peterson, Shelby (Gwen) Peterson, Cory and Scott Booth; four great-grandchildren, Alex, Brandon, Mitchell and Misty; and many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

Memorial service and celebration of her life: noon April 13 at her home in Fond du Lac. Family and friends are invited anytime after 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Prior Lake Library children's section, Attn.: Hilary Toren, 16210 Eagle Creek Ave., Prior Lake, MN 55372.
