Stafford E. Towner Jr.

Stafford E. Towner Jr., 35, of Waconia, Minn., formerly of Hibbing, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in Hibbing.

He was born Sept. 24, 1965, in St. Paul to Stafford and Margaret (Jamieson) Towner Sr. He was a veteran of the Army and had worked as a truck driver.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Arnie and Ellen Nurmi and Ross and Gladys Jamieson; his twin brother; and a nephew, Michael.

He is survived by his wife, Claudette; his mother, Margaret ``Peggy" Towner of Hibbing; his father, Stafford (Shirley) Towner Sr. of Chisholm; a son, Cody Towner of Waconia; a daughter, Erynne Johnson of Chisholm; brothers Ross (Bernice) Towner of Los Lumas, N.M., Mark (Robin) Towner of Kinney and Gerald (Tammy) Towner of Hibbing; sisters Gladys Schrombeck of Hibbing and Cynthia (James) Lind of Hibbing; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Saturday and 1 until the 2 p.m. service Sunday in Dougherty Funeral Home, the Rev. Jack Harris officiating. Burial is in Maple Hill cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Wedin, Mike Wachlin, Tim Towner, Adam Schrombeck, Justin Schrombeck Ryan Towner, Gladys Schrombeck and Cynde Lind.

Rosalie ``Peggy" Eva Skaro

Rosalie ``Peggy`` Eva Skaro, 88, of International Falls died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

Survivors include sons Lloyd, Edward, Daniel and Dwayne; a daughter, Loretta Christianson; 15 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today in Green-Larsen Mortuary Inc., International Falls. Services begin at 1 p.m. Saturday in Evangelical Covenant Church, International Falls. Interment will be in Forest Hill cemetery.

Herman Ignatius Kulus

Herman Ignatius Kulus, 89, of East Superior Street, Duluth, formerly of Scanlon, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born April 13, 1911, to Nicholus and Katherine Kulus in Little Falls, Minn. Herman married Ardythe Harriet Smith in Carlton on Nov. 11, 1936. He worked in defense at Fraser Shipyard in Superior, while establishing a street car cafe and gas station in Scanlon.

In 1945, Herman and Ardythe bought the Golden Gate Night Club in Scanlon and later built the Golden Gate Motel next door. They spent all their days together, working side by side, until they retired in 1977. He was a member of Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ardythe; his daughter, Suzie Yochem of Detroit; his sister, Leone Green of Rhode Island; grandchildren Brian (Lynn) Yochem of Detroit and Shawn Decoster; and great-grandchildren Justin, and twins Devin and Brandon Yochem.

Visitation: 12:30 until the 1:30 p.m. service Saturday in Jarvi-Dowd Chapel. Memorials are preferred to the Arthritis Foundation, Minnesota Chapter, Northeast Branch. Arrangements are by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors, Jarvi-Dowd Chapel, 925 E. Fourth St.

Lawrence F. ``Larry" Berube

Lawrence F. ``Larry" Berube, 87, of Brule died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughters Margaret (Bob) Wiinamaki, Rene'e (Jim) Jamiska and Cathy (Jim) Peepo; a sister, Lorraine Armagost; a brother, Donald Berube; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Memorial service: 1 p.m. Dec. 9 in Iron River Municipal Center. Arrangements are by Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home.

Bernice R. Carlson

Bernice R. Carlson, 92, of Hibbing died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000.

She is survived by sons Walter, Bernard and Terry (Valerie) Carlson; a brother, Vincent (Emma) Auger; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Saturday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hibbing. Interment is in Maple Hill cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the charity of donor's choice.

Sylvia A. (Russ) Lipovetz

Sylvia A. (Russ) Lipovetz, 86, of Chisholm died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2000.

Survivors include a son, Vincent (Jeannette) Russ; a daughter, Karla (Herman) Koering; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three nieces; and three nephews.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Chisholm. Burial is in Chisholm cemetery. Arrangements are by Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

Margaret Lien

Margaret Lien, 72, of Vernon Street died peacefully Friday, April 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 27, 1928, to James and Hilma Akelson in Duluth and graduated from Duluth Denfeld High School in 1947. She worked for over 30 years at Garon Knitting Mills, retiring in the early 1990s.

Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 51 years, Herb; a daughter, Pamela Lien of Hermantown; sons Jeffrey (Peggy), Judd and Jay (Joan), all of Duluth; sisters Bev of Duluth and Joan of Bothell, Wash.; brothers Marty of Bothell and Howard of Denver; grandchildren Jeff, Stacy, Heather, Carney and Chelsie; great-grandchildren Richie, Hayley, and Jeff Jr.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon service Tuesday in Zion Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Fred Olson Mortuary.

George "Joe" W. Elden

George "Joe" W. Elden, 70, a lifelong Park Point resident died Friday, April 13, 2001, in St. Mary's Medical Center.

He was born May 2, 1930, to George and Corolyn Elden in Detroit. Joe attended Park Point Elementary, Duluth Central High School and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He served in the 82nd Airborne and the Sixth Ranger Infantry Co., earning the Parachute and Glider Badge. Joe married Kay Trotta on Feb. 27, 1954, in Duluth. He worked as a mailman for the U. S. Postal Service for more than 27 years, retiring in 1987. Joe was a member of LAL (Lake Avenue Loafers), the Park Point Community Club, and enjoyed the many years he spent as a Park Point youth hockey coach.

He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew John Elden.

Joe is survived by his wife, Kay; sons Mark of Duluth, Anthony of Forest Lake, Minn., and Joel (Kelly) of Duluth; a daughter, Coco (Greg) Jones of Forest Lake; grandchildren Kyle, Kacey, Andy, and Jody Elden, Katy, Amanda and Matthew Elden, and Cassidy, Chelsea, and Calley Jo Jones; a great-granddaughter, Leila Mitchell; and his sister, Patsy.

Visitation: 11 a.m. until the noon celebration of Joe's life Tuesday in Johnson Mortuary Chapel. Arrangements by Johnson Mortuary.

Rose Marie Gustafson

Rose Marie Gustafson, 87, formerly of 46th Avenue West and West Sixth Street died Friday, April 13, 2001, in the Edina Care Center.

She was born Sept. 30, 1913, in Eveleth to John and Frances (Matjaz) Korenchen. She moved to Duluth in the mid 1930s, where she attended Duluth Teachers College.

She married Axel R. Gustafson on Dec. 28, 1936, in Duluth. They raised their family in Duluth, where, among other enterprises, Axel established the Spirit Valley Insurance Agency. Rose was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Shortly after Axel's death in 1998, Rose moved to Edina to live with her daughter, Janet. Rose would also spend several months at a time living with her granddaughter, Keli, in Green Bay, Wis. She spent many happy summers with her family at their cottage on Lake Millicent, Wis. She was a former member of St. James Catholic Church in Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Axel, Dec. 21, 1998; brothers John, Edward, Albert and George Korenchen; and a sister Frances Patka Martin.

She is survived by daughters Judith Kritzmire of Duluth, and Janet (Robert) Prettner of Edina, Minn.; a sister, Margaret Bratulich of Chanhassen, Minn.; two brothers, Victor (Patricia) Korenchen of St. Louis Park, Minn; and Thomas Korenchen of Duluth; grandchildren Robert (Anne) Kritzmire of Chicago, Barrett (Christopher Acevedo) Kritzmire of Westport, Conn.; Keli (Randy) Biebel of Green Bay, Wis.; and Geofford Prettner of Minneapolis; great-grandchildren Axel, Katy and William Kritzmire, Avery, Olivia and Andres Acevedo, MaCall, Max, Madison and Mya Biebel, and Jessie Prettner; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 4 until the 5 p.m. service Tuesday in Williams-Lobermeier Funeral Home. Burial later this spring in Bethany cemetery.

Wesley P. Lafave

Wesley P. Lafave of Duluth, Port Orange, Fla., and Green Bay, Wis., passed away into the loving arms of God on Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Wesley was born in Green Bay onAug. 22, 1913. He lived most of his life in Duluth, moving to Port Orange in 1994. He retired from Duluth-Superior Transit Co. in 1975.

Wesley was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine, who died during childbirth; wife Irene of 46 years in 1993; a daughter, Catherine Hanaway; a son, Rodney Lafave; daughter-in-law, Mary Lafave; sons-in-law James Hanaway, Myron Agre and John Carlson; grandson, Paul Lafave.

He is survived by daughters Mary Jo Shaw (Bob) of Lutz, Fla., and Sandra Carlson of Minneapolis; a son, Gregory Lafave (Ruth) of Calgary, Alberta; daughter-in-law, Kathleen Lafave of Duluth; grandchildren Jeffrey Lafave (Kate), Douglas Lafave (Heather), Debra Groth (Skip), Julie Campbell (Larry), Daniel Lafave (Darlene), Joseph Lafave, Mark Lafave (Lynne), Frank Shaw (Kathleen), Amanda Shaw (Garrett), Mary Peters, James Hanaway, Kathy Zirbel (Leslie), Janet Hanaway, Sue Thiesfeldt (Keith), Terry Willett (Jim), Carolyn Austin (Norman), Jerry Hanaway (Sherri), Jane Mencheski (Dan) and Timothy Hanaway (Terrie); great-grandchildren Megan Lafave, Brandon, Maryssa and Arielle Lafave, Josh, Katrina and Nicole Groth, Jessica and Felicia Campbell, Taylor, Hailey and Caitlin Lafave, Zachary Black, Rachel Peters, Sara and Alan Zirbel, Tyler and Scott Thiesfeldt, Jamie, Robbie and Jimmy John Willett, Norman III and Ryan Austin, Samantha, Allison and Katie Sue Hanaway, Sierra and Savanah Mencheski, Travis and Tommy Hanaway; one great-great grandchild, Michael Aichner; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service will be held in Duluth June 23. Burial of Wesley and Irene Lafave will follow at Forest Hill cemetery.

Martha Lake

Martha Lake, 87, of West Eighth Street died Friday, April 13, 2001, in St. Luke's Hospital.

Born Nov. 10, 1913, in Parkano, Finland, to Alex and Hilma Luoma, she immigrated to Hibbing in 1920. Martha graduated in 1932 from Hibbing High School and moved to Duluth in 1934. She was the owner and operator of the Little Inn in the old Lyceum Building until 1965 and was a clerk and department manager at Goldfines by the Bridge for ten years. She was a member of the Antique Auto Club of America.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward in 1999; a brother, Wilho Luoma; and a sister, Laura Falk.

She is survived by a son, John of Duluth; grandchildren Kenneth Lake of Duluth and Sherry (Tim) Zebott of Duluth; great-grandchildren Ashley and Brandon Zebott.

Visitation: 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service Wednesday in Foley Chapel.

Darlene R. Bradt

Darlene R. Bradt, 63, of Roseville, Minn., died Friday, April 13, 2001.

She was preceded in death by her father, Norman Hansen.

Darlene is survived by her loving husband of 43 years Gene; children Kellie Bradt, Kevin, and Eric (Kathy); grandchildren Erica, Jessica, Kevin Jr., Nicholas, Claire and Ashley; her mother, Violet Hansen; a sister, Diane (Philip) Swanson; brothers Glen (Carolyn) Hansen, and Steven (Jeri) Hansen; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.

Private memorial service. Memorials preferred to Make a Wish Foundation. Arrangements by Roseville Memorial Chapel, (651) 631-2727.

Mae Lind

Mae Lind passed away Friday, March 23, 2001, in Concord, Calif.

She was born Hannahmae Nissen in Duluth on Feb. 10, 1916. She was a 61-year resident of Oakland, Calif., and was employed at the Naval Supply Center in Oakland beginning in 1940. She was a supervisor there until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, Temple 17; a past high priestess of the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America, Molila Court No. 53; a past president of N.A.R.F.E.; a member of the Children's Home Society and of the Order of Eastern Star, Trinity Chapter of Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl G. Lind; her parents, Hannah and Nils Nissen; brothers Karsten Nissen, Nils Nissen, Robert Nissen and Donald Nissen; and sisters Lena McFarland, Margaret Forseth and Marie Eilers.

Her sister-in-law, Viola Nissen of Antioch, Calif.; six nieces, eight nephews and numerous grand and great-grand nieces and nephews who survive her, will sadly miss her.

Memorial service: 2 p.m. April 22 in Christ Lutheran Church, 100 Hacienda Ave., San Lorenzo, Calif. Inurnment in Mountain View cemetery, Oakland. Arrangements by Chapel of the Chimes, Oakland (510) 654-0123.
