Vivian Field
Vivian "Viv" Arthur Field, 94, of Fergus Falls died Aug. 27, 2004, in Columbia, Mo.
He was born May 2, 1910, in Pelican Rapids to Ole and Hannah (Holman) Field. As a teenager he moved to Fergus Falls, where he resided the rest of his life.
Throughout his life, he was an entrepreneur, starting in boyhood selling frogs for spending money. As a young man, he established Shell Oil Station on Lincoln and Vine, where he later added a caf/.
On May 6, 1932, he married
his sweetheart, Fern F. Lambert, in Oakes, N.D., and they were happily married
for 60 years.
After a stint of doing defense work, he started Field Machine, where he sold auto parts and rebuilt engines when new vehicles were difficult to obtain following World War II. As needs changed, and the business expanded, it changed form of operation and eventually became Fleet Wholesale Supply.
He and his associates established The Wheat Belt Buying Group Association, and he later partnered with The Mid States Buying Group to provide a varied line of products at reasonable prices to the farm community. Stewart Mills Sr. and Sons of Brainerd, Minn., owners of Mills Fleet Farm, joined him and later bought his shares. He maintained a close relationship and active interest in the company.
He was also instrumental in establishing Skyvision, Inc., along with three of his children. He actively participated in its operation until his death.
He built numerous homes, apartments, business buildings, assisted in the development of several other successful businesses and helped in the construction of three churches. He was a founding member of Community Bible Church and served on the Board of Elders. Other than Viv's passion for Jesus, and his family, he loved the outdoors and the activities that came with it. His hunting and fishing experiences, whether in the mountains or the plains, were some of the highlights in his life. Even at the age of 93, he was still climbing deer stands.
He had many friends, and they repeatedly expressed appreciation for the positive influence he had on their lives. He was deeply loved and appreciated by his family. To the very end, he was concerned for the comfort and welfare of his family.
He is survived by five children: daughter, Arlene (Robert) Ledbetter of Columbia, Mo., son, Richard (Beverly) Field of Fergus Falls, son Eugene (Linda) Field of Fergus Falls, daughter, Marlene (Douglas) Thompson of Springfield, Mo., and son David of Elbow Lake; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandsons.
