Shirley Thompson

S. Boyd Thompson, 85, of San Diego, Calif., a summer resident of Lake Miltona, died on Wednesday, April 28, 2004, at Sharp Memorial Hospital of San Diego.

He was born July 10, 1918, to Henry and Clara (Twetten) Thompson in Centuria Township, Wis., worked the farm with his father until the family moved into the city.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942. Following completion of flight training at Stockton, Calif., Lieutenant Thompson was assigned to the 32nd Troop Carrier Squadron where he piloted C 47s and other aircraft on numerous missions in northern Africa and Europe. As lead pilot and squadron commander attached to the 8th Air Force, he led one of the first air convoys of C 47s dropping paratroopers behind enemy lines into France on D Day, June 6, 1944. One of his proudest wartime accomplishments was his rescue of his best friend, Bob Bennett, from a POW camp in Germany at the close of the war. Bob and Boyd remained very close friends throughout their lives. Following the war, he remained on active duty and served in various posts including Japan, the Pentagon, Greenland, and other domestic assignments.

He married Genevieve Ryden in 1942, whom he met while attending the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. In 1970, Colonel Thompson retired as director of finance for the Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, Colo. While in Colorado Springs, he attended the graduate school of business at the University of Colorado with his oldest son, Gary. In 1972, he relocated to the San Diego area. Following the death of Genevieve in 1993, he married Louise Beckwith of San Diego in 1996.

Since his first name was the source of many jokes and instances of mistaken identity, he preferred to use his middle name, although he was also known as Tommy to his closest friends in the Air Corps. He maintained a summer home on Lake Miltona for the past 50 years and was an avid collector of antique automobiles and served as President of the Vintage Car Club of Alexandria. A man of many talents, he could fix almost anything. Besides being a generous and loving father and grandfather, he was a mentor and example for many who knew him. His children remember him as the most kind and generous man they ever knew.

He is survived by his wife, Louise; three children: Gary (and Lorie) Thompson of Walnut Creek, Calif., Craig Thompson of Concord, Calif., and Charlotte (and Brent) Mitchell of Julian, Calif.; three grandchildren: Jonathan Thompson of Walnut Creek, and Paul Elliott and William (and Mary) Elliott both of Colorado Springs; and his sister, Eunice Palm of Golden Valley, Minn.
