Herold, Clement N. "Clem"

Clement N. "Clem" Herold, 78, of Cochrane, Wis., died Sunday, December 29, 2002, at St. Michael's Lutheran Home, Fountain City, Wis.
Funeral services will be Friday, January 3, at 11 a.m. at J.S. Wozney Funeral Chapel of Cochrane, with Rev. Lisa Bodenheim officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo City Cemetery.

Bauer, Donald Russell

Donald Russell Bauer, 79, Winona, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 3, at the Westfield Golf Club.

Martin, Magdalen

Magdalen Martin, 101, died Saturday, December 29, 2002, at St. Anne Extended Care, Winona.
Arrangements are pending.

Newman, Ellis Ann

Ellis Ann Newman, 61, died Wednesday, December 25, 2002, at her daughter's home in Minnesota City, Minn., following a courageous battle with cancer. Ann was born June 13, 1941, in Mason City, Iowa, to Morris and Ellis (Bracken) Laird. She married Alan L. Newman and they were later divorced. Ann received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music from DePauw University in Indiana and was a music teacher and choir director in Little Falls, Minn., and Robinsdale, Minn. She had also received a degree in computer programming and had been working for Chemrex in the Twin Cities prior to her illness. Ann had been the choir director for Bethany Covenant Church in Richfield, Minn., where she attended church. Ann is lovingly remembered for her love of music and traveling.
Survivors include her two daughters, Elle Newman and Kari Newman both of Minnesota City, Minn.; two sisters, Moreen Fielden of LaJola, Calif., and Jo Laird of New Hampshire.
A celebration of Ann's life was held on Monday, December 30, 2002, at Hoff Funeral Homes ­ Burke Winona Chapel. Burial of Ann's body was in the Hillside Cemetery in Minneiska, Minn. A memorial service is also being planned for a later date at Bethany Covenant Church in Richfield, Minn.

Balk, William, Jr.

William Balk, Jr., 78, died Monday, December 30, 2002, at Lake Winona Manor, Winona, Minn.
William (or Junior as he was known) was born November 1, 1924, to William Sr. and Lena (Tillman) Balk of Cream, Wis. Junior was a member of Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Cream, Wis., where he enjoyed singing as a member of the choir in his younger years. He lived and farmed with his parents in Cream for many years. Many of Junior's favorite memories were of his years on the farm. Junior gave in every way he could and his love and kindness will never be forgotten. He will be sadly missed by all that knew his generosity and kindness.
Survivors include sisters: Viola (Albert) Benning, Arcadia, Wis., Luella (Hilbert) Schultz, Alma, WIis., Dorothy (Bernell) Wetterlin, LaCrescent, Minn., Betty (Gerald) Baecker, Alma, Wis., Gloria (Henry) Schultz, Alma, Wis., and a special nephew Michael W. Fogel, Houston, Minn..
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
Services will be Thursday, January 2, 2003, at 2:00 P.M., at Zion Ev. Lutheran Church, Cream, Wis., the Rev. Elroy Conradt officiating. A spring burial will take place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 1:00 P.M. at the church on Thursday.
Arrangements completed by Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.

Bergaus, Ruth M. (Kangel)

Ruth M. (Kangel) Bergaus, 84, died Wednesday, January 1, 2003, at Sauer Memorial Home.
She was born May 28, 1918, in Winona, to Martin and Regina (Jereczek) Kangel. She married John W. Bergaus on May 25, 1939, in St. John Nepomucene Church, Winona. He died in 1972.
Ruth was a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Parish and the Council of Catholic Women. She attended Winona schools and graduated from Winona High School. She worked as a dental assistant in Winona.
In 1945, Ruth and her husband moved to Anchorage, Alaska. John was an engineer on the Alaskan Railroad. In 1951, they moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where they owned and operated a laundry service. They returned to Anchorage until 1956, when she came to Winona to live. She worked at Watkins Products Co., retiring after 31 years from City Sales Department.
Ruth was a devoted mother and grandmother, always having time to listen. She enjoyed making a variety of needlework crafts for her family and friends.
She is survived by two daughters, Jane (Donald) Cramer and Marie (Karl) Dambach of Winona; a son, John A. (Patricia) Bergaus of St. Louis Park, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Vicki Rayburn, Valerie Fakler, Diane Michuda, Jim Merchlewitz, Karla Dambach, Kim Reimann, Lynn Ford, and Bradley Bergaus; three step-grandsons, Allen, Keith and Thomas Cramer; eleven great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, and six sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday, January 3, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart Church, with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Kulas, Florence M.

Florence M. Kulas, 77, of 251 East Ninth St., died Tuesday, December 31, 2002, at her home.
Florence Mae Hanson was born on January 24, 1925, at Yellow Grass, Saskatchewan, Canada, to August and Lily Nordgren Hanson. In 1928, the Hanson family migrated to northern Minnesota, eventually settling in Brook Park. When Florence was four years old, her mother passed away. Two years later, her father married Selma Gullickson. Selma lovingly cared for Florence and forged a lifelong mutually devoted mother-daughter bond.
Florence graduated from Pine City High School in 1943. She married Don W. Hein. They divorced in 1951. Florence married Roy R. Kulas on July 3, 1954, at Mora, Minn. Roy preceded her in death on October 3, 1990.
Florence was a student at Winona Business College for two years. In 1957, she began her employment with Winona Public School District #861, where she quickly advanced and developed a stellar career as the Executive Secretary and Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools. On May 4, 1985, the State of Minnesota honored Florence as "The Employee of the Year" for the Minnesota Association of Educational Office Personnel. Governor Rudy Perpich proclaimed the Saturday of that week as Florence Kulas Day in Minnesota. Mayor Earl Laufenburger declared that Monday as Florence Kulas Day in Winona. Florence retired from her 28 years of exceptional service to the school district that same year.
Florence has been a very active member of Grace Presbyterian Church for many years, and at various times served on the Worship, Funeral, Pastor Nominating, Fund Raising and Evangelism Committees. She was a member of Presbyterian Women and the Women's Circle. She has served as a church elder and as a deacon. She was involved with the church youth group, sang in the church choir, cooked for the church bazaar, and was active in all fund raising events. In addition to church activities, Florence was also a member of the FOE #1243 Auxiliary, the Westfield Golf Social Club, Portia Club, Winona Shrine Auxiliary, the Treasures Galore board of directors, the Winona Area Retired Educators Association, and was politically active in the DFL party for many years.
Florence was an intensely devoted mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend. With much enthusiasm and conviction she readily identified the innate talents, skills and potential she saw evident in her children, their spouses, her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With unwavering determination, she provided supportive encouragement and sought to instill in each the confidence to strive and achieve. With Florence on your side, failure is impossible. Those of us who reaped the benefits of her unfailing support, confidence, high energy and inspiration, shall remain eternally grateful.
Florence was generous to a fault with those whom she loved, and social causes for which she had a passion. She cared deeply for animals, was supportive of the Winona Area Humane Society, and was a true "cat person." Florence was a music enthusiast and had been gifted with a great singing voice. She couldn't resist the challenge of a good jigsaw puzzle, was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, loved traveling, and, over the years, took many trips touring the country with family and friends.
Florence is survived by her daughter, Mary (Jerry) Lowery of Winona; a son, Robert (Barbara) Kulas of Winona; grandchildren, Keith (Paula) Kulas and Jon (fiancee, Angela Sweeny) Lowery; great-grandchildren, Lee and Ryan Kulas; a brother, Harold Hanson of Oregon; very dear and special friends, Ellie Griesel and Gloria Salling; her beloved little dog, Meg; and precious cat, Tabitha.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Hilda Ericksen, and brothers, Rudolph and Daniel Hanson.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 4, at Grace Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Hugh Drennan officiating. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Casketbearers were Ronald Dietrich, Keith and Paula Kulas, Jon Lowery, Ronald Hanson and Rollie Salling.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Grace Presbyterian Church, or your favorite charity.
Martin-Myhre Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Scheuermann, Margaret A.

Margaret A. Scheuermann, 81, Winona, entered her eternal home in heaven on Wednesday, January 1, 2003, from Community Memorial Hospital.
Margaret was born March 4, 1921, in Alameda, Calif., to Christel and Gunde (Tuchsen) Seebeck. She married Frederick J. Scheuermann on August 1, 1943, in San Diego, Calif. He died August 12, 1987. She was a longtime resident of Alameda, Calif., and Santa Cruz, Calif.
Margaret was a member of St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church and its Circle Hannah.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Rev. Dr. Eugene) Chase of Morristown, Minn., and Cappy (Robert) Larson of San Francisco, Calif.; eleven grandchildren: Alyssa, Greta, Sarah, Emma, Heidi, Peter, Mary, Daniel, Tim, Karin, and Max; five great-grandchildren: Cadence, Rebekah, Patrick, Emily, and Andrew; one sister, Betty Dombrink of Alameda, Calif.; as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a brother, Melvin Seebeck.
Funeral services were Saturday, January 4, at St. Martin's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. David Henslin officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Memorial Park in Santa Cruz, Calif.
Memorials may be directed to St. Martin's Lutheran School, Winona; Cannon Valley Lutheran High School, Morristown, Minn.; or Good Shepherd Home of Southern California.

Carroll, Richard C.

Richard C. Carroll, 73, Greenfield, Wis., formerly of Winona, died Monday, December 30, 2002.
Richard was born May 30, 1929, to Farley and Bertha (Shaw) in Winona. He was a 1947 graduate of Winona High School. On October 10, 1953, he was married to Patricia, and they moved to the Milwaukee area in 1956.
Rich worked for many years in automobile sales in the Milwaukee area. He was a member of the Lake Lodge F. & A.M. No. 189, Scottish Rite, Tripoli Temple, El Hajj and Royal Order of Jesters Crt. 101. Rich was an avid outdoorsman and a lifetime member of the Cudahy Gun Club.
Beloved husband of Patricia (Wondrow). Dear father of Shawn (Nancy), Dawn (Neal) Paisley and Colleen (John) Wisniewski. Dear grandpa of Meghan, Michael, Ian, Kelsey, Braden, Evan and Maeve. Dear brother of Dorothea Zink, Belle (Larry) Goroski, Roger (Marie) and Lance (Patricia). Also, sister-in-laws, Nancy (Jim) Skorlinski and Celia Wondrow.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters, three brothers-in-law, Gerald Wondrow, Russell Kreider, and Charles Zink, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Masonic services were held Thursday, January 2, in Milwaukee, Wis., under the auspices of Lake Lodge F. and A.M. No. 189. Christian graveside services were held Saturday, January 4, at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona. A fellowship gathering followed at the Church of the Nazarene in Winona.

Martin, Magdalen "Madge"

Magdalen "Madge" Martin, 101, died Saturday, December 28, 2002, at St. Anne Extended Care, Winona.
Magdalen was born to Joseph Martin and Margaret Ellen Burke on July 6, 1901, in Rushford, Minn., the third child of a family of eleven children.
Magdalen was a woman of many talents and became well-known in the city of Winona as "Madge." In her early years she taught country school, after earning a two year teaching certificate at the Winona Normal School. Later she returned to Winona State College to further her education and taught fourth grade at Cathedral Grade School. She also spent fourteen years as the manager of the Candy Box, a local prominent restaurant, and then worked for the city health department under Dr. Lindsay, who was the city health officer. Madge conducted many inspections of restaurants, meat markets, hotels, grocery stores and taverns, to ensure safe standards of handling food and dishwashing. Later, Madge was also House Mother at Lourdes Hall, the large dormitory on the campus of the College of Saint Teresa.
She was a volunteer and became one of the first to deliver Meals on Wheels. Madge's sister, Mary Buscovick, drove the car, and Madge delivered the meals to the elderly and disabled. She continued this well into her nineties. Madge is remembered for her outstanding quality of serving the public with a happy smile, which allowed her true personality to shine.
Madge is survived by one brother, Joseph, of Saskatchewan, Canada; and two sisters, Mary Buscovick of Winona and Helen Kraus of Wabasha, Minn.
A Funeral Mass was held Saturday, January 4, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Sauer officiating. Madge was a member of the parish for many years. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to the Catholic Grade School system.
Hoff Funeral Homes - Burke Winona Chapel assisted the family with the arrangements.
