Helland, Levina I.
Levina I. Helland, 92, of 4710 Ninth St., Goodview, Minn., died Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Lake Winona Manor, with her daughter and family at her side.

She was born in Fillmore County on July 4, 1909 to Anton A. and Rachel (Johnson) Erickson. She married Harold C. Helland on December 19, 1928 in Lanesboro, Minn. He preceded her in death on November 21, 1981. They farmed together for 46 years in the Highland area before retiring to Goodview in 1974.

Levina was a former member of First Lutheran Church of Highland where she was very active in church and she served as a president of the Ladies Aid. After moving to Goodview she became a member of Central Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Circle.

Levina loved embroidery and making quilts to give to family and friends. She was a very loving, good hearted mother and grandmother who always had something to give, and will be missed very much.

She is survived by two daughters, Doris Olness of Goodview and Elaine (and Wallace) Larson of Moorhead, Minn.; a son, Hubert (and Judy) Helland of Surprise, Ariz.; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; and a brother, Donald Erickson of Lanesboro, Minn.

Levina was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her parents, two great-granddaughters, three sisters and three brothers.

A funeral service will be Monday, July 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Scott Olson officiating. Friends may call at Fawcett-Junker Funeral home on Sunday, July 15, from 5-7 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to time of services. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be Larry, Steven and Daniel Olness, Jair, Zach and Kai Larson.

Czaplewski, Katherine V.
Katherine V. Czaplewski, 94, formerly of 661 East Wabasha St., died Friday, July 13, 2001 at St. Anne Hospice.

She was born May 31, 1907 in Hart Township, Minnesota, to John and Catherine (Kahoun) Dvorak. She married Benedict L. Czaplewski on October 25, 1938 in Rushford, Minn. He died December 18, 1987.

She was employed at Watkins Products, retiring December 31, 1969.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish and its Rosary Society, Polish Heritage and St. Jude's Guild.

Survivors include two sons, Theodore (Lois) and James (Bonnie) Czaplewski, Winona; a daughter Kathy (Bill) Olsen of Winona; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edward Dvorak of Rushford, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a son, Ben, Jr., a grandson, Anthony, six brothers and two sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday, July 16 at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with preliminary services at Watkowski-Pronschinske Funeral Home. Rev. Daniel R. Dernek will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home with a Christian Wake Service at 7:30 p.m.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Chuck Czaplewski, Nicholas Czaplewski, Billy Olsen, Joe Hall, Tim Towle and Jamie Hansen.

She was a kind and generous person who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her smile will always be remembered.

Dejno, Betty L.
Betty L. Dejno, 76, of New Hope, Minn., died Thursday, July 12, 2001 at Hennepin County Medical Center.

She was born May 27, 1925 in Pickwick, Minn., to Theodore and Elizabeth Malenke Braatz.

She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Park, Minn.

Betty, also known as Polly, was a talented musician. She was drummer for the original Swiss Girls Band and also played with the Silver Stars Band and Arnie's Band.

Her love of music in later years was extended to people in nursing homes where she played the button accordion.

She loved people and will be missed for her happy "so be it" attitude.

She was a member of the Pickwick Mill Association and the Old Settlers Association of Winona.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dolores Whitney.

Survivors include her children, Kim (Sue) Dejno of Coon Rapids, Minn., Rick Dejno of New Hope, Kathy (Dale) Nelson of New Hope, and Randal Dejno of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Grace and Brian; a brother, Gary (Mary) Braatz of Pickwick; and sisters, Shirley (Edward) Kauphusman of Winona and Donna Fritz of Gibbon, Neb.

She was a devoted mother to her children and immensely enjoyed her grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, July 17, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Brenden Prigge officiating. Burial was in Pickwick Cemetery.

Casketbearers were Terrance Zittel, Daniel Mohan, Steven Braatz, Alan Whitney and Jacob Mengelkoch.

Biesanz, Irene Frances
Irene Frances Biesanz, 84, of Winona died after a short struggle with cancer on Sunday, July 15, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Irene was born April 6, 1917 in Mosinee, Wis. to Michael and Anna (Kronenwetter) O'Connor.

In 1938 Irene graduated from the College of Saint Teresa with a double major in Latin and English, and a minor in German. Her older sister, Dorothy Callaghan, also a College of Saint Teresa graduate, helped to put Irene through school during the Great Depression. Irene worked as a librarian in Great Falls, Mont. for a year, followed by several years of teaching Latin, German and American History in Ocono Falls, Wis. High School.

She married Charles William (Bill) Biesanz, Sr., on December 30, 1941, and continued her teaching career through the lives of her eleven children: Charles (Becky) of Winona, Anne (Ted) Roberton of Rushford, Minn., Thomas of Winona, Teresa (William) Schumaker of Winona, Philip of Richfield, Minn., David (CJ) of Sacramento, Cal., Barbara (Mark) Pozanc of Winona, Francis (Rebecca) of Sleepy Eye, Minn., Don (Lynn) of Winona, Robert (deceased) and Julie (Geoff) Gardner of Winona. She has also been blessed with thirty-one grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Callaghan of Sacramento, Cal.

Irene's Christianity was of the utmost importance in her life. As a young Catholic couple, Bill and Irene belonged to the Christian Family Movement. She embraced her involvement in her beloved Bible Study Group as well as being a member of the Catholic Daughters of Cathedral Parish. She felt most honored to be an affiliate of the order of Christian Brothers as well as an affiliate of the Hermits of Mt. Carmel, sharing both of these honors with her husband, Bill. Promoting vocations to religious life, she also attended Serra Club meetings on a regular basis.

She served in many capacities throughout her life. She was president of the Community Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, president of the Alumnae Association of the College of Saint Teresa, and served on the boards of Viterbo College and the College of Saint Teresa. Although she contributed much through her community work, her love of life was enriched by many interests and her love of people. She was a respected and avid bridge player who was involved in many bridge clubs, including one that has lasted fifty years.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother, Philip, and son, Robert Paul.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart with Rev. John Sauer officiating. Preliminary services will be at 9:30 a.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home. Entombment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Casketbearers will be her sons, Charles, Thomas, Philip, David, Francis and Donald Biesanz.

Memorials may be given to the donor's choice.

Haines, Pelchie V.
Pelchie V. Haines, 91, of Arcadia, Wis., died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at St. Anne Hospice, Winona.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, July 17, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Arcadia, with Rev. Patrick Umberger officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Arcadia.

Wing, Helen Ann
Helen Ann Wing, 86, El Cerrito, Cal., died Monday, May 14, 2001 in El Cerrito.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 19, at St. Stanislaus Church, Winona, with a luncheon to follow in Pacholski Hall. Private interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.

Hintze, Mabel M.
Former Garden City area resident Mabel Margaret Hintze, 96, died Wednesday, July 11, 2001 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.

Services were Saturday, July 14 at Woodland Hills Funeral Home in Mankato.

Mrs. Hintze was born February 23, 1905 to John and Lena (Schrum) Gosch at Gretna, Neb. She moved to Amboy and later Janesville, where she met and married Lester N. Hintze. They lived in Judson and later near Cambria before moving to Garden City in 1946. She moved to Marshall in 1988.

She was a member of Loon Lake Extension Club and Zion Lutheran Ladies Aid.

Mrs. Hintze is survived by one daughter and her husband, Margaret Hohenstein and Dave, of Winona; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one daughter, one grandson, one great-granddaughter, two sisters and a brother.

Heren, John G.
John G. Heren, age 77, died Sunday, July 15, 2001 at their lake home.

Best friend and husband of Darlene W. Dimitroff. Special step-father to Lynn Ann Aldrich, her husband Brian, and grandsons, Robert and Michael.

Cremation arrangements by Libby Funeral Home, Grand Rapids, Minn. Memorial service Saturday, July 21, at 2 p.m. at their lake home. For additional information call 218-245-1231.

Ciszak, Eunice E.
Eunice E. Ciszak, 78, of 56 Otis Street, died Monday, July 16, 2001 at Community Memorial Hospital.

Eunice was born in Winona on September 15, 1922, the daughter of Edward H. and Genevieve (Kuhlmann) Keller. On August 22, 1942 she married Delos E. "Sonny" Ciszak in the rectory of St. Martin's Lutheran Church. He died July 12, 1993.

Eunice had worked as a nurse's aid at Sauer Memorial Home.

She is a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona.

Survivors include her children: Charles Frank Ciszak of Rochester, Minn., Eugene Edward (Carol) Ciszak of Spring Valley, Minn., Francis (Karen) Ciszak and David Ciszak, both of Winona; Suzanne (Jon) Birch of Durhamville, NY, Mary (James) Gunn of Winona, Katherine (Richard) Lande of Winona, Donna (Kevin) Boland of Winona, and Lorrie (Mark) Tolmie of Arcadia, Wis.; fourteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Delores Beckman of Stockton, Minn.

She was a wonderful mother, who loved sharing her time with her family. Part of that sharing was her gift of being the best cook ever. She loved birds and animals, and was an avid Twins fan. Kids and neighbors were always welcome at the Ciszak home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a daughter, Karen.

Preliminary services will be Thursday, July 19 at 10 a.m. at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Keefe officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. with Chaplain Kathy Redig leading a prayer service at 3:30 p.m., then from 7-9 p.m. with a prayer service led by Father Keefe at 8:30 p.m. Friends may also call Thursday morning until time of prayers at 10 a.m.

Casketbearers are Scott and Paul Ciszak, Dean Lande, Christopher Gunn, Stephen Gilson, Michael Boland and Mark Tolmie.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Community Memorial Hospital.
