Marston, Dwight H.
Dwight H. Marston died February 20, 2003, in Mesa, Arizona. Dwight was born November 6, 1928, in Postville, Iowa, to Euclid C. Marston and Marie Danner Marston. On August 12, 1950, he married Phyllis A. Lyons at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa. He was a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa and received advanced degrees from the University of Iowa (M.A.) and Indiana University (P.E.D.). He received his Doctorate of Education at Ball State University. He was an educator who taught at the high school, college and university levels. He held positions in teaching and coaching at Thompson High School, Iowa, and Dawson High School, Iowa, and in Higher Education along with coaching at Carthage College, Illinois, (now located in Kenosha, Wis.), Hastings College, Nebraska, and Winona State University. During his entire education tenure Dwight had the opportunity to serve as an assistant and head coach in all of the major sports offered at the high school and college/ university levels. Dwight served as the Director of Athletics at Winona State University for twenty-five years (1966-1991). He was also selected as the District Chairman of NAIA for Minnesota for a period of ten years, served as the Golf Chairman for District #4 NCAA Division II Championship events, and was selected as Golf Coach of the Year for District #4 NCAA Division II in 1993 and 1994. His Winona Sate University golf team competed in the NCAA Division II Golf National Championships in 1993 and 1994.
Dwight was a member of the First Congregational Church in Winona, Masonic Lodge in Postville, Iowa, the Tehema Shrine Temple in Hastings, Nebraska, Scottish Rite Body in Hastings, Nebraska, the American Legion, National Golf Coaches Association, AAHPER, NAIA, NCAA, Phi Epison Kappa, and Phi Kappa Pi.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Marston, of Winona, Minn., two sons, Douglas (Debbie) Marston, Craig (Terri) Marston and three grandchildren, Nicholas Marston, Jessica Marston and Kyle Marston; two brothers and two sisters: Joseph (Blanche) Marston, Jean (Al) Lopez, Craig Marston and Virginia Douglas. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service was held in Mesa, Arizona, on February 23, 2003. A second memorial service will be held in Winona, Minnesota, at a later date. Morcomb, Stanley S.
Stanley S. Morcomb, age 89, of 223 East 10th Street, died on Monday, February 24, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona.
Stanley was born on July 19, 1913, in Pleasant Hill Township, Winona County to Earl and Mary (Frappier) Morcomb. He was a lifelong resident of the Winona area. He married Phyllis Gellersen in Winona and they lived at 223 East 10th Street for over 60 years.
Stanley was a truck driver for various different companies in the area, including Borest Ice Cream, Winona. He retired from Community Memorial Hospital where he worked in the boiler room. After retirement, he was a volunteer driver for SEMCAC for 19 years.
Stanley was a kind man. He had many friends - young and old and he was always there to help. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Winona.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; a son, Roger (Julie) Morcomb, Princeton Junction, N.J.; a daughter, Joyce (Bob) Nilsen, White Bear Lake, Minn; five grandchildren: Tom (Lisa), Kelli (Doug), Matt (Jodi), Chris (Jennifer) and Scott; five great-grandchildren: Avery, Seth, Gabrielle, Macy, Rachel; two brothers, Wayne (Marilyn) Morcomb, Burmingham, Alabama, Glenn (Barbara) Morcomb, Hastings, Minn.; three sisters, Dora Morcomb, Brainerd, Minn., Mabel Beach and June Neumann both of Winona and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be Thursday, Febraury 27, 2003, at 2:00 p.m. at Central United Methodist Church, Winona, with Rev. Mary Hurmence, officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.
Visitation will be Thursday, February 27, 2003, at the church starting at 1:00 p.m.
Casket bearers will be the grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Central United Methodist Church.
Funeral arrangements are being made by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.
Lane, Joan Therese
Joan Therese Lane, 70, of Stewartville, Minn., died Friday, February 21, 2003, at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn., from injuries suffered in an automobile accident.
She was born Joan Therese Cisewski on April 20, 1932, in Winona
She grew up in Winona and graduated from Cotter High School. She attended two years of college at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona. She married Joseph Lane on March 14, 1953, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.
Following their marriage, the Lanes lived in Winona before moving to Stewartville in 1970, where they have lived since.
After graduating from Winona Vocational School, Mrs. Lane worked as an LPN at Winona General Hospital and at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester for over 20 years. After retiring from St. Mary's Hospital, she worked as a public health nurse for Olmsted County and part-time at Dayton's in Rochester. Mr. Lane is a retired sheet metal worker.
Joan was a longtime member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville and was active in its CCW and religious education program. She was active in Stewartville's Meals on Wheels program and its Friends of the Library. She also volunteered with Mayo Hospice and Channel One in Rochester. She was a former member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Parish and was a supporter of the Polish Museum, both of Winona. She enjoyed knitting, traveling and flower gardening.
Joan is survived by two daughters, Sharon Lane Jacob of Winona, and Sue Starr Lane of Rochester; one son, Steven (Christine) of Stewartville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Lorraine Sheehan of Red Wing, Minn.; and one brother, James Cisewski of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, and a son-in-law.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 26, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Stewartville, with Revs. Gregory Havel and Leroy Eikens officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, February 27, in St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona.
There will be visitation one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.
Arnold, George C.
George C. Arnold, 89, died Monday, February 24, 2003, at Sumner Trace Hospital, Carmel, Ind.
Funeral services will be Friday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at Martin-Myhre Funeral Chapel, with Rev. James Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Fountain City Public Cemetery. Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Vathing, Doris H.
Doris H. Vathing, 93, of Houston, died Sunday, February 23, 2003, at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston. She was born on May 17, 1909, in Ivanhoe Minnesota, to Rudolph and Minnie (Fischer) Schulz.
She graduated from Ivanhoe High School in 1927 and attended Ivanhoe Normal School for one year and Winona Teachers College where she received her teaching certificate. After graduating from Winona Teachers College, Doris came to Houston, Minn., to teach 8th grade until she married Sigurd H. Vathing on June 12, 1934. They had been married for 64 years when Sigurd died in 1998.
Doris, a devoted mother and grandmother, also was active in many school and civic activities including P.T.A., Band Mothers, Houston School Board, Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church and its choir, circles and ladies organizations.
She is survived by her two sons Bob (Darlene) Vathing of Minnetonka, Minn., and Jim (Patty) Vathing of Plymouth, Minn.; one daughter, Judy Williams of Houston, Minn.; eight grandchildren: Carey, Becky (Dan), Steve (Chris), Tim (Tanja), Michelle, Kip, Ben and Jeff; six great-grandchildren: Christopher, Robbie, Max, Luke, Annika, and Tommy; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Schulz Rans of Marshall, Minn., and Sylvia Vathing Anderson of Sun City, Arizona, and 11 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sigurd Vathing, her parents, and her brother, Howard Schulz.
The funeral service for Doris will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26th, 2003, at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston with the Rev. Lane Zaffke officiating. Burial will be in the Stone Church Cemetery in Houston.
Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoff Funeral Homes Houston Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are preferred and the family asks that they be designated to the Cross of Christ Lutheran Lutheran Church Roof Fund.
Czaplewski, Martin Stanislaus
Martin S. Czaplewski, 83, of 621 East Belleview St., died Friday, March 21, 2003, at his home.
He was born November 11, 1919, in Winona, to Frank and Frances (Stalka) Czaplewski. He was a lifelong Winona resident. He attended St. Stanislaus Grade School and graduated from Winona High School. Martin married Delores D. Rebhahn of Dodge, Wis., on November 10, 1942, in Winona.
He served in England and France during World War II with the U.S. Army RY Shop Battalion 756. He was a railroad car mechanic.
Martin worked until age 74, when he retired from Badger Equipment Company. Previously he had been employed by Chicago Northwestern Railroad, Swift Packing House, Standard Foundry, Diamond Huller Foundry, and Warner Swasey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and George, and two sisters, Ann Bergaus and Fran Olson.
Martin is survived by his wife, Delores, of Winona; two daughters, Judith Trunecek of Bloomington, Minn., and Sharon (Tom) Sand of Jordan, Minn.; four grandchildren, Robert and Veronica Trunecek and Zachary and Emily Sand; a brother, Eugene Czaplewski of Winona; and extended family and friends.
Martin had a passion for baseball, history, and most of all, his family and grandchildren. We celebrate his life and the meaning he gave to ours.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Tuesday, March 25, at St. John Nepomucene Church, with Rev. Daniel R. Dernek officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Pallbearers were Don Schultz, LeRoy Czaplewski, Robert Trunecek, Veronica Trunecek, Zachary Sand, and Emily Sand.

Hurlburt, Helen Marie
Helen Marie Hurlburt, 79, of Wabasha, Minn., and formerly of Winona, died on Friday, March 21, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Wabasha.
Helen was born on May 27, 1923, in Wisconsin, to Edward and Anna (Heltne) Steller. On October 26, 1940, she married Louis Hurlburt, at Cresco, Iowa. Louis preceded her in death on June 10, 1992.
Helen was a member of McKinley United Methodist Church, Winona. She was formerly employed at the Steak Shop and also sold Avon products.
She is survived by her children, Louis Hurlburt Jr., Winona, Connie (David) Valentine, Winona and Raven (Todd) Chirpich, St. Peter, Minn.; three grandchildren, Jeff Hurlburt, Michelle Turnbell and Carley Chirpich; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Steller, of Winona.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Louis.
Funeral services were Tuesday, March 25, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, with Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery, Centerville, Wis.
A memorial is being arranged.

Tessendorf, Lynn H.
Lynn H. Tessendorf, 51, Winona, and formerly of Modena, Wis., died unexpectedly Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Community Memorial Hospital.
Private family services were held. Burial was in Oak Park Cemetery, Mondovi, Wis.
Ahrens, Richard Benjamin
Richard Benjamin Ahrens, 84, died on Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Lake Winona Manor.
Richard was born on March 17, 1919, in Mason, Wis., to Beno William and Carrie Marie (Van Berkom) Ahrens. On October 27, 1945, he married Helen Marie Miller in Chickasha, Okla. He previously lived in LaCrescent, Minn., and Green Bay, Wis., but most of his life he lived in the Winona area.
He opened the Winona Army-Navy Store in 1946, and continued to be active until his death. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was Past Commander of LaCrescent, Minn., American Legion. He was a member of the Winona Country Club, the Elks Lodge #327, and the YMCA and he had attended most of the Packers games since 1946.
He is survived by his wife, Helen, of Winona; two sons, Richard (Sharon) Ahrens Jr., of Winona and Steven (Sandy) Ahrens, of Cedarburg, Wis.; one daughte, r Carolyn (James) Bruha, of Winona; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Robert (Dorothy) Ahrens, Roland "Sonny" (JoAnne) Ahrens, and James (Pat) Ahrens, all of Winona; two sisters, Jane (Robert) Hardens, of Greenbush, Minn., and Dorothy (Jack) Bittner, of Montevideo, Minn.; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Donna Zeches.
Private family interment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis.
Arrangements were completed by the Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
