Morem, Margaret A. "Peggy"
Margaret A. "Peggy" (Wood) Morem died Sunday, March 18, 2001 at her home in Buffalo City, Wis., following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 72.
Born December 3, 1928 in Dubuque, Iowa, to Earl and Nellie (Leslie) Wood, Mrs. Morem was raised in Winona and educated in its school system. She married Curtis Morem of Harmony, Minn. in Winona's First Methodist Church. The couple celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary September 1. The couple initially moved to Minneapolis where Dr. Morem earned his degree in dentistry at the University of Minnesota. Their first son, Craig, was born at this time.
With the advent of the Korean War, the couple moved to California where Dr. Morem reenlisted in the Army and was stationed at Camp Roberts. Their second son, Bill, was born at this time. The family moved to San Luis Obispo, Cal. in 1953. Their third son, Jim, was born two years later. Dr. Morem established a dental practice and Mrs. Morem began a long career in civic and volunteer work. Among other accomplishments, Mrs. Morem was known as an astute political strategist for non-partisan and Republican candidates. She oversaw campaigns from city council level to judgeships, to state senators, to a ten year stint overseeing Congressman Burt Talcott's tenure in the House of Representatives. The strength of her political talents lay in setting up strong grassroots organizations and following through with lots of shoeleather on the campaign trail. Of the dozen or so campaigns she oversaw, she was never on the losing end of a contest -- a record that still stands unmatched in the political scene of central California.
She also found time to be her son's den mother in Cub Scouts and was known throughout her neighborhood as a willing and ready driver when it came to trundling her children and the neighbor kids to the beach in her '56 Ford station wagon. Her laughter and good humor were infectious.
While raising three young sons and being actively involved in politics during the 1950s and 1960s, Mrs. Morem also found time to volunteer with such organizations as United Volunteer Services and the Monday Club, play golf, refinish a far-ranging collection of antiques, aggressively grow trophy potted plants, and open her home as a gracious hostess for a number of social events.
Always a dedicated chronicler of family life through extensive and detailed compilation of scrapbooks, Mrs. Morem's familial attention in later years was drawn to genealogy and she traveled extensively -- both physically and by the Internet -- tracking down thousands of documents pertaining to her and her husband's families, dating back hundreds of years on both sides. The effort fills dozens of volumes.
She and her husband moved back to their "roots" near Winona when he retired from dentistry in 1987 and they built a home on the banks of the Mississippi River in Buffalo City, Wis.
She will be remembered by family and a wide circle of friends as being smart, funny, gracious, compassionate, and loving. She will be sorely missed by all of those who were touched by her special humanity.
Mrs. Morem is survived by her husband, Curtis of Buffalo City; son, Craig, his daughters Amy and Megan and their mother, Kathy, son, Bill, his wife Sharon and their daughter Caitlin, and son, Jim; brother, Ross Wood and his wife, Coni; half-brother, Douglass Wood Sr.; half-sister, Betty Schoenfeld; and numerous nieces, nephews, and beloved in-laws.
Private family services will be held.
