John Seguin
Services were held yesterday for John Walter Seguin. He died in his Munger home Sun., Oct. 3, 1999. He was 58.
He was born in Duluth, graduated from Hermantown, but lived in Proctor and Munger. He had been employed with Proctor Public Utilities, Prudential Insurance, and for the past 11 years with Minnesota Power as a warehouseman/truck driver.
He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Proctor, Moose Lodge 1302, MN Street Rod Association (MSRA), IBEW Local 31, Northern Knights Car Club, and for many years coached youth hockey in Proctor. He also enjoyed woodworking, painting, camping and fishing.
Surviving are his wife Kathleen, a daughter Laurie (Chet) Luczak of Culver, Minn., two sons Jon (Tammy) of Twig and Lee (Gina) of Cloquet, five sisters Lois (Ed) Rooney of Minneapolis, June (Elmer) Carlson of Duluth, Irene Stebner of Proctor, Viola (Orville) Hanson of Midway, Minn., Joan Peterson of Esko, two brothers James (Lois) of Midway and Michael (Bobbi) of Central Lakes, Minn., three grandsons and three granddaughters.
Burial was in Solway Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Vernice Swanstrom
Services were held earlier this week for Vernice M. Swanstrom. She died Tues., Oct. 5, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. She was 72.
Vernice was born in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School. Vernice was a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell, worked for St. Luke’s Hospital for ten years and Polinski Rehabilitation Center for ten years, retiring in 1989.
Vernice is survived by her son Steven R. (Kris) of Saginaw, daughters Lynn (John) Peterson of Saginaw, Marolyn M. (Leonard) Losh of Cass Lake and Carolyn E. (Frank) Edwards of Lonedell, Mo., a brother Louis (JoAnn) Sjoberg of Two Harbors, 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
George Herbranson
George E. Herbranson, who lived most of his life in Proctor, died Tues., Oct. 5, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. He was 85.
The Sixth Street resident was born in East Grand Forks, Minn. Around 1920, George moved to Proctor, where he later attended Proctor High School. On June 10, 1944, George married Tillie Kruszewski in Proctor and together they raised two children. Mr. Herbranson worked in the bridge and building department with DM&IR Railway for 30 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Edward, Clarence and Gordon, and Sisters Gladys and Mabel.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years Tillie, a daughter Sandy Wicklund of Duluth, a son George “Pogo” (Cindy) Herbranson of Proctor, a granddaughter Lisa (Curt) Tranah, a great-granddaughter Paige Tranah, nieces Beverly and Sharon, and a nephew Gordon.
Burial was in Oneota Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Ernest Sjodin
Ernest Algot “Ernie” Sjodin, 86, formerly of 121st Ave. W. and Midway Township, died Sun., Oct. 10, 1999 in Lake Haven Manor.
Ernie was born in Edmonton Alberta Canada and was a long time area resident. He served in the Army during WW II in North Africa and Italy. He worked for Interlake Iron for 23 years and for Clyde Iron for 12 years retiring in 1973. He was one of the iron workers who built the DECC.
Ernie was a charter member of the West Duluth Moose, member of the West Duluth Legion and the Steel Workers Union. Ernie was a colorful story teller and will be missed by his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Esther Marie, a sister, and a brother.
Surviving are a son Rick A. (Lorna) of Holyoke, MN, three daughters Betty Ann (Dick) Rowe of Proctor, Jan K. (Dick) Rysman of Hermantown and Judy K. (Ray) Wiles of Cloquet, a brother Carl “Ed” of Proctor, seven grandchildren, a great granddaughter and nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Pine Hill Cemetery, Midway Township. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Greta Gulbranson
Joyce Ritchie of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Greta E. Gulbranson. She died Thurs., Oct. 7, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. She was 80.
She was born in Germany, the former Prussia. In 1924, the Nornberg family moved to Rush City, Minn. Later, Greta attended and graduated from Faribault State School for the Deaf. Greta moved to Duluth in 1943 and married Kenneth Stanley Gulbranson. Mrs. Gulbranson was employed with Chun King for approximately five years and returned for an additional year following its sale to R.J. Reynolds.
She was a member of Bayside Baptist Church of Superior and taught Bible study to hearing-impaired children for many years. Greta was also active with the Minnesota Association for Deaf Citizens.
She is also survived by another daughter, sons John of Hermantown and Jeffrey of Adolph, a sister, nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A private family service was held in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum.

William Weiler
Private graveside services in the Canosia Cemetery were held today for William C. “Billy” Weiler. He died Mon., Oct. 11, 1999 in a Duluth hospital. He was 56.
Weiler lived on Shady Lane and was a lifelong area resident. He was born in Duluth and was a 1961 graduate of Hermantown High School. He married Dorothy Kehtel on Oct. 5, 1963 in Grace Lutheran Church. Billy was a sheet metal worker for many years and was a former employee of Duluth Missabe and Iron Range Railway. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Sheet Metal Workers Union Local No. 10. Billy Loved his children and grandchildren, his home at Caribou Lake, fishing, Las Vegas and the Minnesota Vikings. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Lorraine Good.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy, son Michael (Kris) Weiler of Caribou Lake, daughter Heidi (Brian) Nelson of Duluth, brothers Floyd (Ardis) Weiler of Solon Springs and Rodney (Annie) Weiler of Esko, sister Joyce Bowman of Duluth, grandchildren Jacob and Jordan Weiler and Melinda and Nolan Nelson, several nieces and nephews, and his faithful companion Patches.
Pallbearers were Danny Good, Sammy Good, Scott Bowman, Mark Olsen, Jim Kehtel and Dave Kehtel. Honorary pallbearers were Jacob Weiler and Debbie Swanson. Arrangements were made by Bell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Esther Schlegel
Esther E. Schlegel, who moved to Proctor as a newlywed in 1927 with her husband, George, died Thurs., Oct. 14 in Pierz, MN. She was 88.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Mon., Oct. 18 in Little Falls. Father Dennis Hoffman and Father Nick Landsberger concelebrated.
She was born in Lastrup, MN. She grew up in Granite Township near Lastrup and attended high school in Pierz. Esther was married to George H. Schlegel on April 25, 1927 in Lastrup. They moved to Proctor, where George worked for the railroad and Esther worked as a store clerk for WHM Stewart Co. and Ruhnke Shoe Store. Esther and George retired in 1972 and moved to Little Falls. Following George’s death on March 24, 1987, Esther continued to live in Little Falls until Dec. 1995 when she moved to the Harmony House in Pierz. In April of 1999 she became a resident of St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz where she resided until her death.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Christian Mothers, Daughters of Isabella, Secular Franciscans and the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters.
Esther is survived by her son Alvin G. (Helen) of Brainerd, sisters Florence (William) Nagel of Little Falls, Cora (Reinhard) Gruber of Proctor, Mildred (Alex) Hoffman of Duluth and Louene (John) Walz of Pierz, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers were Con Berbe, Dan and Ken Hoffman, and Chris, Walter and Willis Schlegel.
Clarence Stokke
Clarence L. Stokke, who lived in the Proctor area most of his life, died Wed., Oct. 3, 1999 with his family by his side. He was 72.
He was born and grew up in Floodwood. He married Beverly Johnston Oct. 15, 1949. He was a machinist for the Duluth Missabe & Iron Range Railway where he worked for 37 years and retired in 1987. He also owned and operated the Stokke Sanitary Service for 20 years. He attended Augustana Lutheran Church of Midway, belonged to the Alborn Snow Devils, Proctor Moose Lodge 1302 and the Aerie Lake Association.
He was preceded in death by his father Elias, his mother Gerda and brothers, Kenneth and Julian.
Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years Beverly, sons Dennis (Monica) and David (Pam) of Hermantown, a daughter Cheryl (Murray Keogan) Stokke of Duluth, grandchildren Mollie (Scott) Lucia and Shaine Stokke, Justin, Jesse and Stacey Stokke, and Deandra and Kristopher Bjonskaas, brothers Leonard (Elaine) Stokke and Lester (Sadie) Stokke of Floodwood, sisters Inez Hill, Lorraine (Don) Guentzel and Darlene Mattila, all of Floodwood and Mary (Jim) Mart of Hermantown, several nieces and nephews.
Entombment was in Oneota Cemetery. Family prefers memorials directed to St. Mary’s Hospice.

Myrtle Merritt
Myrtle Merritt, who lived in Proctor since the late 1920’s died Sat., Oct. 16, 1999 in Duluth. She was 90.
The former Third Street resident was born in Grasston, Minn. She was active with the Salvation Army and was a secretary for the Home League through the former Salvation Army’s Central Avenue 3 location.
She was preceded in death by her husband James L. Sr., an infant son, her brother, and three sisters.
She is survived by a son James L. Jr. of Proctor and several nieces and nephews.
Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Frances Bartylla
Former Proctor resident Frances Bartylla died Fri., Oct. 8, 1999 in Long Prairie Memorial Hospital. She was 93.
Frances was born in Browerville. She married Stanley Bartylla on April 24, 1922. She was a homemaker and a mother and had also resided in Milwaukee, Wisc. before returning to Clarissa.
She was employed as a seamstress for the Hotel Duluth. Frances was a member of the St. Rose Parish and Legion of Mary in Proctor and most recently a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Clarissa.
She is survived by three daughters, Violet Mikel of Superior, Wisc., Adeline (Walt) Dorosh of Browerville and Virginia (Fred) Herkenhoff of St. Cloud, one son Elvis E. Bartylla of Woodbury, 23 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Burial was at Christ the King Cemetery in Browerville, Minn.
