Howell, Harold William
Harold William Howell, M.D., 94, of 1635 Service Drive, died Friday, December 29, 2000 at Sauer Memorial Home, Winona.
Harold was born November 4, 1906 in Anoka, Minn., the son of Adeline (Rohne) and William Alfred Howell. He was a graduate of Anoka High School in 1925. He attended Chicago College of Podiatry that would later merge with the University of Illinois, where he received his medical degree. He did graduate work at Civic Hospital of Detroit, an affiliate of the University of Michigan.
He practiced in St. Paul for one year before coming to Winona in 1933. He opened his private practice in surgical podiatry and practiced in the Choate Building for 52 years.
He married Annabelle E. Speed on October 30, 1928 in Hudson, Wis. She died November 24, 2000.
Dr. Howell was a charter member of the Podiatric Surgical Academy Association of Minnesota.
He is survived by a brother-in-law, Frank Speed of Winona; and a sister-in-law, Cora Hunter of Anoka, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and a sister, Helen Mae Howell.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home with Rev. Shirley Duncanson of McKinley United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Frank, David and Charles Speed, Larry Clingman and Dr. Robert Datta.
Memorials may be given to the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

Breitenfeldt, Chester "Chet" Roy
Chester "Chet" Roy Breitenfeldt, 75, of 1390 Brookview Drive, died Saturday, December 30, 2000 at Community Memorial Hospital, Winona, following a long term chronic illness.
Chester, known as Chet, was born on July 16, 1925 in Tomahawk, Wis.., the son of Bertha Mae (Schroeder) and August A. Breitenfeldt. He grew up in Clintonville, Wis., and Mountain Home, AR. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944-1947 in Central Europe, returning after the war to Wisconsin where he continued his service with the Army National Guard.
Chet married Betty Jane Wolfangel on August 15, 1952, in St. Paul, Minn.
He worked as a medical and industrial X-ray technician in several locations including his move in 1963 to Winona, where he has since lived.
He was a past master of Winona Masonic Lodge #18, A.F. & A.M., and also past worthy patron of the Order of Eastern Star, Winona Chapter #141. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church, Winona, serving on its various committees and also on other civic organizations in the community.
Chet and Betty loved to travel, fish and camp, but more especially, spend time with family, grandchildren and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, Gary (Dixie)of Winona, Darryl (Patricia) of St. Peter, Minn., and Wayne (Fawn) of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter, Gail (Jerry) Gabrick of Fountain City, Wis.; and nine grandchildren, Reid, Clay, Aaron, Lauren, Taylor, Amy, Brandi, Bonnie and Brent.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Faith Currier.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Central United Methodist Church with Rev. Mary Hurmence officiating. Private inurnment will be in Woodlawn Columbarium, Winona.
The family respectfully requests that memorials be given.

Holzer, Larry J.
Larry J. Holzer, 62, of 471 Deborah Avenue, died Friday, December 29, 2000 at the Watkins Nursing Home.
He was born February 11, 1938 in Winona, to Joseph and Linda Holzer. Larry and Judy were married February 16, 1963 in Winona.
He served his country for four years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Captain in the Winona Fire Department, retiring after 26 years of service in 1994. He also worked for Smith's Winona Furniture for 26 years.
He is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Scott Holzer of Moundsview; and Brad and Stacy Holzer of Victoria, Minn.; new granddaughter, Emma Claire Holzer, born on December 24 of this year; mother, Linda Holzer of Winona; and very special and supportive friends, Bob and Dottie Gonia of Winona, Del and Sherrie Tschumper of Winona, and TALCOT.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Larry was always a very caring and supportive husband and father.
Visitation will be held from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Martin-Myhre Funeral Home. A prayer service will follow with Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Encryptment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery .

Fonner, Salmona "Sally" E. (Haeuser)
Salmona "Sally" E. (Haeuser) Fonner, 94, of St. Michael's Lutheran Home, Fountain City, Wis., died Saturday, December 30, 2000 at the home.
Salmona, known as Sally, was born on August 31, 1906, near Fountain City, Wis., the daughter of Emma (Baertsch) and Soloman Haeuser. She began her life working for the Cochrane, Wis. post office as a young lady. During World War II, she worked as one of "Rosie's Riveter's" for Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach, Cal. She married James Arthur Fonner and lived in the Long Beach area until 1993, when she moved into St. Michael's Lutheran Home in Fountain City.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, January 4, at St. John's United Church of Christ in Fountain City, with Pastor Fritz West officiating. Interment will be in the spring in Fountain City Public Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 3, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home in Fountain City, and after 12 noon at the church on Thursday.

Carlson, Walter A.
Walter A. Carlson, 81, of Theilman, Minn., died Thursday, December 28, 2000 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, at United Church of Christ in Wabasha, Minn. Officiating will be Rev. Marge Mair-Hansen and Mr. Bill Wohlers. Interment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery in Theilman.
Schaale, Bessie V.
Bessie V. Schaale, 91, of the Watkins Home, died Friday, December 29, 2000 at the home.
Arrangements are being planned for a later date.
Wernecke, Lyla L.
Lyla L. Wernecke, 84, of 1631 West Fifth St., died Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.
Lyla was born August 23, 1915 to August and Katherine (Wisala) Maattala. She married Milton Wernecke on June 29, 1938 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Winona. Their three children were all baptized and confirmed there.
She enjoyed working for a short time at Schuler Chocolate Plant and later at Boelter Industries. Her true love was taking care of and nurturing her children and husband. Writing was a joy for her along with working crossword puzzles. Her giving nature came so easily, as did her wonderful cooking and baking.
Lyla and Milton were long-time members of the Coulee Rock Club, the Winona County Historical Society, Winona County Old Settlers, and the Collectors Club of Winona. They enjoyed flea marketing and selling collectables.
Lyla is survived by her husband, Milton; a son, Wayne (Sharon) Wernecke of Kenosha, WI; daughters, Karen Kahl and fiancee, Wayne Gordon of Winona, and Kay Marie Stanich and fiancee, Butch Shaer of Rochester, MN; eight grandchildren: Laurie, Shelley, Erica, Timothy, Michael, Lynne, Erin and Christopher; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Alyce Haesecke of Crosby, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and three sisters.
At Lyla's request her body has been donated to the Mayo Medical Foundation of Rochester's Mayo Clinic.
Memorial services were Sunday, February 20 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home.
Her grandchildren served as honorary casketbearers.
A memorial is being arranged.
