Burke, Vernon J.
Vernon J. Burke, 83, Rushford, MN, died Monday, May 22, 2000 at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, LaCrosse, WI, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 25 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Rushford, with Rev. Ernest Harrelson officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove City Cemetery in Rushford with military honors by the Murphy-Johnson American Legion Post of Rushford.
Pfeiffer, Ruth Naas
Ruth Naas Pfeiffer, 90, of Lakewood, CO, died Saturday, May 20, 2000.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a son, James (Sally) Pfeiffer of Oregon; a daughter, Karlyn Sobeck of Lakewood; a sister, Dorothy Ostrom of Denver; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Karl.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Winona.
Rybarczyk, Erwin J. "Rivits"
Erwin J. "Rivits" Rybarczyk, 86, of 709 East Third St., died Monday, April 10, 2000 at his home.
He was born February 14, 1914, in New York City and came to Winona on an orphan train at the age of two. He was adopted by John and Salomia Rybarczyk.
Erwin attended St. Stanislaus Catholic School and Cotter High School and graduated from St. Mary's College in 1938.
Erwin married Bernadine M. "Bernice" Michalowski on February 19, 1953 in San Francisco, CA. She died April 19, 1999.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish, Polish Heritage Society, Polish Museum, Winona Athletic Club of which he was a past president, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Neville-Lien Post #1287.
He entered military service in 1940 and served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II and Korea. Prior to his attending OCS, he became a battalion Sergeant Major and was discharged as a Major after 13 years of military service. He worked at various jobs over the years, the most recent at the State Hospital in Rochester, MN, from which he retired in 1979.
Erwin was an avid reader, usually visiting the Winona Public Library twice a day and also visiting the firehouse and Kwik Trips. One of the most memorable events in his life was meeting and traveling with President Harry Truman on his campaign train in 1948. He also served as the sergeant-at-arms at the Minnesota State Legislature during the 1950s.
He is survived by one son, John Michael Rybarczyk of Winona; and two grandchildren, Michael and Chrissy Rybarczyk of Winona.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and three sisters.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday, April 13 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church with Rev. Robert G. Meyer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery with the VFW providing military rites.
Pallbearers were Michael Rybarczyk, Jeff Gardner, Kim Bartelson, Steve Baumgart, John Allen Yackel and Angel Olson.
Late in life, Rivits realized that old police cars were the only ones that he could not destroy. Rivits remained a menace on the road to the end!

Bernadot, Mildred L.
Mildred L. Bernadot, 75, of 875 East King St., died Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at her home.
Mildred was born May 19, 1924 in Winona to Louis E. and Mary (Kobus) Groff Jr. She married Allyn Bernadot. He died in 1981.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed at Hal Leonard Corp. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Parish.
She is survived by one son, Robert Bernadot of Winona; five grandchildren, Michelle, Amy, Tammie, Scott and Mark Bernadot; and one sister, Jean Bruski of Willard, MT.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, David, a brother and a sister.

Olson, Elsie Irene
Elsie Irene Olson, 82, of the C&R Unit of Community Memorial Hospital, and formerly of 1222 West Broadway, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000 at the C&R Unit.
Elsie was born in Fillmore County on February 6, 1918, the daughter of Edward and Isabelle (Hilden) Johnson. She married Leo D. Olson in Mabel, MN on December 6, 1941. He died December 2, 1985.
Elsie has worked as a waitress for McVey's Ice Cream Parlor for 25 years, and had been a resident of Winona since 1950.
She is a member of Central Lutheran Church, where she was a very active member and belonged to the Ladies Aid, Quilting Group and funeral lunch committee.She is also a member of Nor-Win Lodge, Sons of Norway, was active in Girl Scouts, past board member of the Winona YWCA, and enjoyed being a member of two special groups of friends, her sewing and birthday club groups.
Survivors include daughters, Linda (Richard) Carr of Winona, Karen (Brent) Rossi of Lilburn, GA, and Nancy (Phillip) Luhmann of Fort Huron, WI; grandchildren, Leah-Marie (David) Marchok, Michael (Ellen) Carr, Patrick (Kristin) Carr, Eric (Shannon) Rossi, Heather (John) Donovan, Matthew (Lindsey) Luhmann, and Jeremy and Emily Luhmann; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Clarence (Donna) Johnson of Mabel, MN and Wallace Johnson, Decorah, IA; and sisters, Amy (Cyrus) Larson, Rushford, MN, Lorraine Benson, Peterson, MN, Vivian (Harry) Stennes, Mabel, MN, Delores Hanson, Mabel, MN, and Ione Hanson, Rochester, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.
Funeral services were Saturday, April 15 at Central Lutheran Church with Rev. Wade E. Davick officiating. Burial was in Mabel Cemetery, Mabel, MN.
Casketbearers were her grandsons, Michael and Patrick Carr, Eric Rossi, Matthew and Jeremy Luhmann and David Marchok.
A memorial is being arranged.

Bambenek, Florence
Winona native Florence Bambenek, 84, Ontario, CA, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000. She and her husband moved to California in 1969.
She was born May 31, 1915 in Winona, to Joseph and Pauline (Heftman) Kulas. On September 22, 1941 she and Raymond Bambenek were married in St. Stanislaus Church. He died March 29, 1983.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. William (Alice) Nelson of Ontario; two grandsons, Brian and Jon Nelson; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Edward and Harry.
A Memorial Mass was offered Saturday, April 15 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Upland, CA. Burial was in Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA.
Smith, Helen A.
Helen A. Smith, 64, Minneapolis, MN, and formerly of St. Charles, MN, died Monday, April 10, 2000 at her home.
She was born October 21, 1935 in Rochester, MN to Faye and Rosemary (Manahan) McCarthy. She was raised in St. Charles and graduated from Winona Secretarial School in 1954. Helen and Charles Smith were married July 26, 1969 in Windom, MN and later divorced. She lived in Windom and worked for Sears and Toro there. In 1976 Helen moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Sperry-Univac.
Survivors include a son, Scott (Sue) Smith of Benson, MN; two grandchildren, Dylan and Jenna; a brother, Joe (Mary) McCarthy of Caledonia, MN; and two sisters, Marie (Charles) Theismann and Genevieve (Hugh) Theismann, both of Wabasha, MN.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Memorial Mass was held Saturday, April 15 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church with Rev. Caesar Dralega officiating. Burial of Helen's cremated body was in Calvary Cemetery, St. Charles.
