Virginia Arquette
Virginia M. (Otten) Arquette, 87 year old resident of Buffalo, died Sunday at the Buffalo Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Church of St. Francis in Buffalo with Father Rayar officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
Visitation from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo with a parish prayer service at 5:30 p.m.
Virginia Otten was born on September 9, 1917 in St. Michael to Charles and Hildegard (Rittrath) Otten. She grew up in the St. Michael area. She was united in marriage to Howard Arquette. The couple made their home in Buffalo where they raised their family. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Buffalo.
Survived by daughters Annette Sicheneder of Waconia and Paulette (David) Severson of Buffalo; brother Canute (Harriet) Otten of Buffalo; sister Bernice (Robert) Robasse of Buffalo; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law and other relatives an friends.
Preceded in death by her parents Charles and Hildegard Otten; husband Howard T. Arquette; brothers Cuthbert Otten, Adrian Otten and Egiduis Otten.
The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
Harriet Johnson
Harriet A. Johnson, 92 of Laporte, Minn. died Monday, November 29, 2004 at home. Funeral services were held on Thursday, December 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Olson - Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji. Reverend Arlen Stensland officiated. Family greeted friends one hour prior to the service. Interment was in Sell Lake Cemetery, Itasca Township, Clearwater County, Minn. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to North Country Hospice, Bemidji.
Honorary bearers were Bert Pfeifer, Stuart Varner, Robert Varner, Jerry Crawford, Jim Leonard, Bill Leonard, Gene Davis, Darrell Bruns, Valentine Montes, Dan Hanson, Jeff Hester and Roger Mabbitt.
Casket bearers were Frank Mitchell, Roger Bratlien, Kurt Castle, Bradley Castle, Karl Johnson and Lee Johnson.
Harriet Adeline Varner was born September 3, 1912 to Henry David and Minnie (Moss) Varner in Buffalo, Minn. She attended Varner Elementary School to grade 8. She married John Castle in Buffalo in 1932. She learned the hairdressing trade by apprenticeship in Corvalis, OR and owned and operated her own shop. After several years there, she moved to the Twin Cities and worked at Dayton's Beauty Salon. She married Carl Johnson April 24, 1940. In 1953 the couple moved to Itasca State Park, where Harriet was active in community activities such as being a 4-H advisor. While living there she published a book of poetry "The Leaves Clapped Their Hands." Following her retirement at the park, they moved to rural Bemidji. She was a member of Malvick Lutheran Church, made quilts for the missions, and enjoyed traveling.
Harriet is survived by her daughter Julia (Gene) Davis, Bemidji; two sons, Raymond (Jean) Castle, Bemidji and John (Debra) Johnson, Buffalo; nine grandchildren Kate Hester, Amy Hanson, Molly Montes, Sarah Mabbitt, Kurt Castle, Bradley Castle, Karl Johnson, Ellie Johnson and Lee Johnson; 17 great grandchildren Amanda Ervin, Allison Ervin, Joshua Looney, Brady Looney, Zachary Looney, Isiah Looney, Alexia Hanson, Dylan Hanson, Andrya Johnson, Braidon Mabbitt, Ashlea Hester, Emily Hester, Karlie Castle, Douglas Castle, Matthew Castle, Erica Montes and Gabriela Montes; two step great grandchildren Lindsay Ellingson and Blake Hanson.
She is preceded in death by husbands John Castle and Carl Johnson; infant great grandson Andrew Grubbs and eight brothers and sisters.
Arthur VanLith
Arthur J. VanLith was born March 15, 1922 in Milbank, South Dakota, and died at home in Delano on December 2, 2004. He was preceded in death by his wife Juanita (Kaiser) VanLith; brothers Martin, Casey and Fritz; and sisters Martha Wandersee and Dorothy Adickes.
Art and Juanita were married May 28, 1949 in Delano, where they settled and made a permanent home. Here they raised their four children: Christine, Claudia, Carol and Bruce. During his early years of employment, Art worked as a carpenter and an auto mechanic. In 1955 he began a career with Skelgas (Getty Oil) where he remained employed for nearly 28 years. His final five years with Skelgas, Art served as the branch manager for the Anoka office.
Over the years, Art enjoyed square dancing, playing bridge and vacationing with his family and friends. Arthur was an avid fisherman, stained glass artisan, and gifted storyteller. In recent years, Art compiled a collection of his memoirs and stories in a book entitled, "The Flying Dutchman." (Available at the Delano Library.)
Art is survived by his daughters Christine and Craig Algers, Claudia and Philip Vierling, Carol and Rich Melcher; son Bruce VanLith; grandchildren Beth, Michael, Brian, Mark, Heather and Melissa; sisters Irene and Harvey Wandersee and Gertrude and Kenneth Hanson; brothers Leonard and Mickey VanLith and Lambert and Liz VanLith.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Delano. Reverend Michael Miller officiated at the service with interment in the Calvary Cemetery in Delano. The Resurrection Choir, Margaret Groskreutz organist, and Brian Ohnsorg soloist provided music.
Casket bearers were Craig Alger, Philip Vierling, Rich Melcher, Steve VanLith, Bob VanLith and Curt VanLith.

Grace Mahlberg
Grace Idella Mahlberg died on Saturday, December 4, 2004 at her home in Delano. She was born November 17, 1917 to Andrew and Josephine (Fautsch) Pogreba in Delano, Minnesota.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband Arnold Mahlberg; her parents Andrew and Josephine Pogreba and her sisters Laura Dalheimer and Helen Tischler. She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, December 7 at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Delano. Reverend Frank Wampach officiated at the Mass with music provided by the Resurrection Choir.
Interment was in the Calvary Cemetery in Delano.

Grace Kleven
Grace J. Kleven, 76, of Maple Lake died Saturday, December 4, 2004 at Country Manor Health Care Center, Sartell.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004 at Bethlehem United Church of Christ, Maple Lake with Rev. Richard Mark officiating. Burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Friends called from 4-7 p.m. Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake and one hour prior to services at the church. There was a prayer service 6:30 p.m. Monday. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.
Grace Junnette Kleven was born June 23, 1928 at Hawley to Carl and Gina (Jore) Ekre. She married Carl P. Kleven April 16, 1949 in Hawley and he preceded her in death on April 16, 1994.
She was employed by the Lincoln Del, St. Louis Park from 1954-1969, Moorhead Holiday Inn from 1969-1972, Ellis Steak House, Annandale from 1971-1974, and then for 15 years by the Maple Lake Cafe; owning & operating the cafe from 1974-1977.
She was a former member of Westwood Lutheran Church, St. Louis Park and a member of Bethlehem United Church of Christ and the Maple Lake VFW Post #7664 Auxiliary, being their treasurer since inception. She was a Campfire Girls Leader and aided various youth sports organizations in St. Louis Park. She was always willing to volunteer her food preparation skills for the VFW, Maple Lake Schools, and area churches and benefits.
She is survived by her 3 children & their spouses, Gregory Kleven of Maple Lake, Nancy & Robert Bratvold of East Grand Forks, Sandy & Dale Ashwill of Cokato; 4 grandchildren, Kyle Ashwill of Cokato, Karrissa (John) Kasella of Royalton, Randy Bratvold of Minneapolis, Julie Bratvold of Bemidji; sister, brothers & their spouses, Doris Olsen of St. Louis Park, Kenneth & Janice Ekre of Hawley, and Gordon & Carol Ekre of Hawley.
She is preceded in death by her husband, brothers & sisters, Clayton, Bernice & Ivy Ekre, Hazel Peterson, Opal Swenson, Esther Johnson, and Irene Bielke.
The pallbearers were Jerome, Ron, Steve, & Mark Ekre, Jay & Neal Olson, Gary & Emery Kleven.
The music for the service provided by Joyce Breen & David Schmidt, vocalists and Pearl Lieb, organist.
The arrangements were by Dingmann Funeral Care of Maple Lake.
Loretta Kaley
Mrs. Loretta P. Kaley, 82, of Maple Lake died Thursday, December 2, 2004 at home.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 6, 2004 at St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Maple Lake with Rev. Richard Kaley OFM Conv. and Father Mark Huberty officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Friends called from 3-7 p.m. Sunday and 9-10:30 a.m. Monday at the Dingmann Funeral Care Chapel, Maple Lake. There was a prayer service at 6:00 p.m. Sunday.
Loretta Philomina Kaley was born September 22, 1922 in Olivia to John and Matilda (Julius) Dobmeier. She married Richard L. Kaley January 29, 1945 in Bird Island and he preceded her in death December 25, 1983.
Loretta and Richard owned and operated Richard's Bakery & Catering Service, Bloomington from 1954-1975. She was choir director at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church, Bloomington and the first music director at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Bloomington.
Loretta moved to Maple Lake in 1975 and was very active in the community. She was site coordinator of senior dining in Maple Lake from 1984-1993. She was a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church, Maple Lake where she was the former music director for 7 years. She was a member and past president of the Maple Lake VFW Auxiliary Post #7664, and volunteered at Wright County Community Action, Maple Lake where she was also a former board member.
Loretta loved her family, music, church, entertaining friends, and enjoyed life.
Loretta is survived by 9 children and their spouses, Mary Jo (Dennis) Petersen, Rev. Richard Kaley OFM Conv., James (Jane) Kaley, Kevin (Kathleen) Kaley, Michael (Vicki) Lopez-Kaley, Gerald Kaley, David Kaley, Robert Kaley (Adrian Pereira), and William (Tonya) Kaley; brothers, Ernest Dobmeier, Mervin `Pete' Dobmeier, and Donald `Bud' Dobmeier; sisters, Julia Steffel, and Marcella `Sally' Steil; 20 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Patricia Hilgers; sisters, Josephine Ninow, and Lorraine Jacobson; brothers, Earl and Clifford Dobmeier.
Pallbearers were Scott Petersen, Michael Kelley, Benjamin Kaley, Matthew Kaley, Joshua Kaley, Richard Kelley, and Zachary Kaley.

Joseph Bauman
Funeral services for Joseph C. Bauman, 80 of Delano will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2005 at St. Peter Catholic Church in Delano. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Delano. Visitation was held Wednesday afternoon and evening from 4-9 p.m. with a 5 p.m. rosary and 8:30 p.m. prayer service.
Father Michael Miller of the Delano Catholic Community officiated at the Mass.
Joe passed away Saturday evening at home surrounded by his loving family after his brief battle with cancer.
Joe was born on March 13, 1924 in Franklin Township at his parent's home west of Delano. He built a life filled with love around his faith and family. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Delano.
Joe was very involved with his church. Over the years he served on the building committee, finance committee, board of trustees, cemetery board and parish council. He was an usher almost every Sunday and he often served at funeral Masses. He has been a member of the Catholic Aid Association since 1940, holding positions in the Local Chapter of St. Anthony Council as the treasurer and secretary for many years.
The community of Delano also benefited from Joe's services as he and his wife, Marcella, delivered meals on wheels for 18 years.
As a young man, Joe developed an avid interest in the outdoors. Growing up and working on his parent's farm, he cultivated this outdoor passion by hunting and trapping. He also enjoyed woodworking, photography, and trapshooting. For many years he was a member of the Delano Sportsman Club. He also taught firearms training for many years to the young people in the area. He was a lifetime member of the NRA. Joe was honored by being named the First Life Member of the "Big Timber Mazawaukins" (a black powder gun club).
Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years Marcella; daughters Linda and Paul Neumann, Cecelia and Dan Gabrelcik, Franny and Ray Ross; sons Carl, Mark, Martin and Leo; grandchildren Lynn Neumann, Charity and Nathan Filipi, Andy and Emily Gabrelcik, Josh and Kelly Gabrelcik, Jessi Gabrelcik, Tracy Gabrelcik, Vince Ross, Tony Ross, and Paul Ross; great grandchildren Matthew, Tanner, Samantha, Jenna and Colin; brothers Lawrence and Anni, Robert and Helen, Steve and Darlene, Anthony and Jean; sisters Catherine and Dan Bauer, Rita and Peter Schmitz, Caroline and Bill Metz, Rosemary and Jack Gillis and Dorothy Jean and Jerry Griep; sisters-in-law Pat Bauman, Judy and John Stein and many more relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Catherine (Muckenhirn) Bauman and two brothers Clarence and John.
His family and friends are inspired and grateful for his deep faith and wonderful humor. We'll miss him every day.

Anita Dixon
Anita Clara Dixon (nee Giese), 81 years, 11 months and 18 days, of Rockford Township, died Monday evening, January 31, 2005 at her residence.
She was born on February 13, 1923 in Greenwood Township, Hennepin County, the daughter of William and Bertha Hohenstein Giese.
Anita was baptized into the Lutheran faith by Pastor W.P. Haar, Sr. on March 18, 1923. She was also instructed in the Lutheran catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greenwood Township on March 21, 1937 by Pastor W.P. Haar, Jr.
On March 15, 1941, Anita C. Giese and Kenneth C. Dixon were joined in holy marriage in Greenwood Township. God blessed their marriage with three children: Karen, Darvis and Andrea.
Mr. and Mrs. Dixon engaged in dairy farming for many years and she lived her entire married life on the farm near Rockford. Anita had a love for chickens and the outdoors. She also enjoyed crocheting.
Anita was a faithful member of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford and belonged to its Ladies Aide. She often headed its funeral lunch committee.
She leaves to mourn a daughter Karen (Dale) Jans and a son Darvis Dixon, all of Buffalo; a son-in-law Mark Hauge of Beaverton, Oregon; grandchildren Chaplain Major Gregory (Lydia) Jans, USAF, Lyle Jans, Bradley (Janet) Jans and Douglas (Denise) Jans; great grandchildren Ali and Katie Jans, Isaac Jans, and Adam and Emily Jans; sisters Hertha Dixon of Buffalo and Agatha (Harvey) Schulze of Rockford; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Caroline Giese, Lydia Dixon, Aaron (Lois) Dixon, Eloise (Clifford) Lieder and John (Ruth) Dixon; many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband Kenneth C. Dixon; a daughter Andrea Hauge; her parents William and Bertha Giese; a brother Waldemar Giese and brothers-in-law Clifford and Donald Dixon.
Funeral services for Anita Dixon were held on Thursday, February 3 at 2 p.m. at Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rockford. Pastor Michael Barlow officiated and interment followed at Elmwood Cemetery.
Janet Beise was the organist for the funeral service. "Amazing Grace, " "Onward, Christian Soldiers, " "Abide with Me! Fast Falls the Eventide" and "Asleep in Jesus! Blessed Sleep" were sung as congregational hymns.
Friends called at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo on Wednesday, February 2 from 4-9 p.m. with a prayer service at 8:30.
Honorary casket bearers were Anita's grandsons Chaplain Major Greg Jans, USAF, Lyle, Brad and Doug Jans.
Casket bearers were Tim Schulze, Todd Schulze, Gary Dixon, Arlyn Koecher, Randy Jude and Dwayne Lieder.
