Loraine Monson
Loraine Vendella Redding was born on November 8, 1901, to Leonard and Minnie Redding of Lamberton, MN, the second of their four children. She died peacefully on Monday, May 11, 2004, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN, at the age of 102.
Loraine grew up in Lamberton, MN, and graduated as class valedictorian from Lamberton High School in 1919. In 1920 she enrolled at Rockford (IL) College where she studied science and biology. She received her degree in 1924 and returned to Minnesota where she taught at the high school level in the cities of Wadena, Two Harbors, and White Bear Lake. In 1925 her family moved to Grand Rapids, MN, where her father became a restaurant proprietor. He died in 1930.
While teaching at White Bear Lake, she met fellow teacher, Harvey Monson, of Moorhead. Harvey then enrolled in the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. They were married in Minneapolis, MN, on Sept. 12, 1934. In 1935 they moved to Moorhead where Dr. Monson began his dental practice and their three sons were born. He died in 1954.
Loraine was a stay-at-home mother and also did substitute teaching at Moorhead High School. After her husband’s death, she began working at Gate City Savings in Fargo, ND. She retired in 1966. She then worked for Dr. Joel Broberg at NDSU as the secretary for the National Science Foundation’s Summer Teacher Institute until the mid 1970s. Loraine liked to be “on the go” and was involved with many organizations, associations, and clubs over the years. She was active in Bethesda Lutheran Church Ladies Aid, Luther League, Circle, and worship. She achieved 84 years of membership in the Order of the Eastern Star. Loraine was a member of the Moorhead Public Library Board from 1953 to 1974. She was a charter member of PEO Chapter CO in Moorhead. She also belonged to the AAUW and Retired Teachers Association. In 1975 she was part of a group of women who organized the Moorhead Thrift Shop, where she worked faithfully each week until this past summer.
Loraine lived until 1996 at her home on 10th St. S. in Moorhead that she and Harvey had built in 1941. She then moved to Eventide Catered Living in Moorhead, where she resided until last September when she became a resident of Eventide Lutheran Home.
Most important to Loraine were her three sons and their families. She is survived by her three sons, Richard (Patricia) Monson of Brookline, MA, Robert (Gail) Monson of Fargo, and John (Helen) Monson of Long Prairie, MN; five grandchildren, Cybel Monson, Minneapolis, Kristi (Doug) Knight, Canton, MI, Kelli (Steve) Moen, Minneapolis, Stacy (Chris) Cavallero, Gilbert, AZ, and Jay Monson, Centerville, MN; and eight great-grand children, Lindsey, Taylor, Jonathan, Allison, Hannah, Hunter, Keegan, and Averie. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Redding, of Grand Rapids, and six nieces and nephews. Loraine was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband, her siblings, Viola Tanner, Maynard Redding, and Marion Seagren; two sisters-in-law, and a brother-in-law.
Loraine lived a long, healthy, and full life. She will always be remembered as a kind and caring Mother and Grandmother. God bless the memory of Loraine Monson!

Arnold O. Mjones
Arnold Ordean Mjones was born December 14, 1923, to Ole and Anna (Kragnes) Mjones, on a farm near Hendrum, MN, where he was raised and attended school. In the summer of 1944, he entered the military service and served as an infantryman in General George Pattons 3rd Army in WW II. Arnold was discharged from the service in 1946 and thereafter was employed at various automobile wholesale firms in Fargo, ND. Arnold later worked at the Moorhead Post Office for approximately fifteen years.
Arnold was united in marriage to LaVerna Moore on June 28, 1952, in Fergus Falls, MN, and they made their home in Moorhead, MN. Arnold loved conversing with friends and relatives. He was a life member of the Moorhead VFW and took an active interest in world events. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, reading and politics. He followed the stock market closely and did income tax preparation for many years. In his younger years, Arnold enjoyed playing softball. In his later years, he followed all sorts of sports activities, especially his grandchildren’s sporting events. He and LaVerna enjoyed travelling and went to visit relatives in Norway four times.
With his family by his side, Arnold went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 18, 2004, while a resident at Bethany Homes, Fargo. He was eighty years of age. The Mjones family wishes to thank Hospice, the pastors, doctors, medical staff and caregivers at Bethany Homes for their wonderful work, prayers and support during Arnold’s struggle with dementia.
Arnold is lovingly survived by his wife, LaVerna; four children, Roger (Lori), Rick (Marilyn), Linda (Dan) Kostich and Sandra (Brian) Torgerson; and ten grandchildren: Kara Mjones, Mathew Mjones, Zachary Mjones, Adam Torgerson, Shawn Kostich, Nicholas Mjones, Ross Torgerson, Rachel Mjones, Blake Kostich and Emily Mjones. They all reside in Moorhead. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, seven brothers and four sisters.
Visitation for Arnold will be Sunday, May 23, 2004, from 5 - 7 PM, with a prayer service at 6 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. The funeral will be Monday, May 24, 2004, at 11 AM, in Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, Moorhead. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Moorhead Memorial Gardens.
Frank M. Mills
Frank M. Mills, 92, Grand Rapids, MN, died February 13, 2004, at Grand Village in Grand Rapids.
Frank was born in Petersburg, ND, on March 17, 1911, to Newton and Charlotte (Moore) Mills. The family moved to Felton, MN, when Frank was a child. Frank married Margaret Ann Prenosil on February 13, 1933. They lived and raised their family first in Perley and then in Georgetown, MN. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in 1974. In 1991 they moved to Grand Rapids, MN. His wife died in 1998.
In addition to his parents, Frank was preceded in death by three sisters, four brothers and a granddaughter.
He is survived by a brother, Edgar Mills, Sequim, WA; two sisters, Ann Davis, Burien, WA, and Ellen (George) Hettinger, North Aurora, IL; ten children, Richard (Geri) Mills, Stuart, FL, Patricia (Bobby) Galloway, St. Cloud, MN, Francis (Wanda) Mills, Tierra Verda, FL, June (Dale) vonRuden, Pismo Beach, CA, Ronald Mills, Colorado Springs, CO, Arlene (Jim) Kieffer, Wheatland, ND, Sherry Mills, St. Paul, MN, Harris (Mary) Mills, Grand Rapids, Douglas (Terry) Mills, Elkton, VA, and Kim (Carolyn) Mills, Rockford, MI; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Leona M. Mertes
Leona M. Mertes, 92, Moorhead, MN, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead.
Leona Marie Homan was born August 21, 1911, in Yellow Medicine County, near, St. Leo, MN, to Charles and Cecelia (Schmitt) Homan. Leona was raised in St. Leo where she received her education.
Leona married Jacob N. Mertes, May 24, 1934, in St. Leo and they made their home in Mantador, ND. They moved to Baker, MN, in 1959, where they owned and operated Jake’s Grocery. He died February 10, 1978, and Leona moved to Florida later that year, to live with her eldest son. She lived there twelve years and moved to Moorhead in 1990. She entered Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, in May of 2002.
Leona is survived by her three sons, James (Betty) Mertes, Hudson, FL, Ronald (Sandy) Mertes, Barnesville, MN, and Donald (Ann) Mertes, Moorhead; four daughters, Donna (Donald) Fugere, San Diego, CA, Patricia (Charles) Orn, Lisbon, ND, Rita (LeRoy Stolberg) Mertes, Eagan, MN, and Geraldine “Jeri” Bean, Apple Valley, MN; 20 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; three great stepgrandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four brothers; and four sisters.
In addition to her husband, Leona was preceded in death by her parents, and a daughter, Rosemary.

Theodora McDonough
Theodora “Teddy” McDonough, 66, Moorhead, MN, died Sunday, May 16, 2004, at 2:45 AM in the Intensive Care Unit of Innovis Health, Fargo, ND, of complications arising from a long bout with emphysema.
Teddy was born September 6, 1937, in Niagara Falls, NY. She was the only daughter of Fred and Muriel Hellwig. She attended Niagara Falls High School and the Carnegie Institute of Nursing, Cleveland, OH. She worked as a medical technician for Olin Matheson Chemical Corporation, Niagara Falls. On June 6, 1959, Teddy married John McDonough, a long-time Fargo-Moorhead resident, who had just been discharged from the Army. They were married in Niagara Falls, and came to Fargo on their honeymoon, eventually taking up residence in south Moorhead.
Teddy worked as a receptionist for St. John’s Hospital and was a valuable assistant to her husband in his many enterprises. She will be fondly remembered as a compassionate and loving wife and mother. She will be deeply missed and mourned by her husband, children and by her many friends from all over the country.
Teddy is survived by her husband; three children, Wendy (Richard) Hutchings, Reno, NV, John Jr. (Julia), Fargo, and Christopher, Moorhead.
Teddy has donated her body to the University of North Dakota Medical School, Grand Forks, ND.

James Mackner
James Mackner, son of John and Kathrine (Neitzke) Mackner, was born August 6, 1932, in Detroit Lakes, MN, where he grew up and attended school.
James was united in marriage to Rita Heinen on June 16, 1952, in Detroit Lakes. They later moved to Moorhead and raised their family. Rita preceded James in death on Nov. 23, 1984. James later married Darlene Zummach on May 13, 1989, in Dent, MN. The couple also made their home in Moorhead.
James drove trucks all his life. He worked for Fairmont Creamery, Moorhead, for 19½ years. He then worked for SuperValu, Fargo, ND, until he retired in 1998.
James Hubert Mackner, died Tuesday, February 24, 2004, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
James is survived by his wife, Darlene, Moorhead; four sons, Daniel, Fargo, David (Debbie), Moorhead, Gary (special friend, Tammy), Park Rapids, MN, and Dr. Jeffrey (Connie), Pelican Rapids, MN; four stepchildren, Lynette (Dale) Hanten, Raymore, MO, Allen (Jennifer) Zummach, Dent, Susan Zummach (special friend, Randy), Dent, and Tami Zummach, Fargo; ten grandchildren, nine stepgrandchildren, and two great-stepgrandchildren.

Paul Maassel
Paul Frederick Maassel was born on July 2, 1922 in New Underwood, SD. He was the son of Rev. George and Clara (Schroeder) Maassel. At the time Paul’s father was Circuit Rider in western South Dakota. Later the family moved to Sherwood, OH, and then Napoleon (Freedom Township), OH. Paul attended St. John’s Lutheran School until 1936 and Concordia High School and College from 1936-1942. He then transferred to Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, graduating in 1947 with a Masters of Divinity. While attending the Seminary, he sang with the International Lutheran Hour Chorus.
Paul was united in marriage with Ellen Alberg of Warwick, ND, on October 26, 1952. Paul served parishes in Munich, Lidgerwood, and Williston, ND; and Rapid City, SD. He left the parish ministry in 1969. He then attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, and North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND, where he received a Masters degree in 1971. He worked for a number of years with the Minnesota State Employment Service and later as a beekeeper. After his retirement he was an organist for Immanuel Lutheran Church in Fargo for ten years. In retirement he enjoyed woodcarving and the friendship of fellow carvers. Throughout his life, Paul’s faith in God sustained and guided him. Paul died Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at eighty-one years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Ellen, Moorhead; children Mark (Chris) Maassel, Valparaiso, IN; Sonia (Eric) Jacobsen, Roseville, MN; Sharon (Mark) Peske, Bemidji, MN; Michael (Karen) Maassel, Fargo, and 15 grandchildren.
Brothers and sisters are Lester Maassel, Lois Wesche, Richard (Carol) Maassel, all of Ft. Wayne, IN; Delmar (Yvonne) Maassel, Volo, IL; Juanita (Oliver) Thorpe, Wilmington, DE; Ruth (Don) McClain, Columbus, OH; and Miriam (Leonard) Neumann, Mt. Carmel, IL. Paul was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother, Norman.
