Clara Helley
PLUMMER, Minn. -- Clara Helley, 64, Plummer, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Hillcrest Nursing Home, Red Lake Falls, Minn.
Clara Ann Blair was born Feb. 19, 1934, the daughter of Stewart and Ruby (McBride) Blair, in Wyandotte, Mich., where she graduated from high school. She attended Mesa College in San Diego and received a degree in business administration. She joined the U.S. Navy on Jan. 5, 1954 and served during the Korean War, where she received the National Defense Service Metal. She was discharged April 12, 1956. She married John Helley on April 6, 1956, in Waukegan, Ill. They lived in several places in the U.S., until moving to Plummer in September 1978. She is a charter member for the National Association of Military Women.
She is survived by her husband; children, Helen (Dan) Doughen and Mary (Kevin) Maullen, both of Ramona, Calif., John Jr., Crookston, and Kermit (Patti) and Barbara (Jerry) Bjerke, both of San Diego; and nine grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; children, Robert Charles and Horace Arthur; and brothers, Stewart, Chuck and Daniel.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Plummer.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Presbyterian Cemetery, Brooks, Minn. Memorials are suggested to the Plummer Recreation Center. (Petterson, Red Lake Falls, Minn.).
Edna Ward
LANCASTER, Minn. -- Edna Ward, 84, Babbitt, Minn., formerly of Lancaster, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 1998, in St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Edna Gertrude Ingeborg Zakrison was born Dec. 16, 1913, the daughter of Pete and Amanda (Glad) Zakrison, in Lancaster. She married Gordon Ward on April 7, 1934. They moved to Babbitt in 1952. She was a charter member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Babbitt.
She is survived by daughters, Joyce (John) Bernu, Dayton, Minn., and Judy (Rod) Mosher, Beltrami, Minn.; sons, Garry (Janet), Hoyt Lakes, Minn., Brian (Nancy), St. Cloud, Jon (Laura), Silver Bay, Minn., and Tom, Babbitt; a son-in-law, Bob Akemann, Babbitt; 21 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by daughters, Marlene Klegstad and Cindy Akemann; a son-in-law, Gordon Klegstad; a sister, Helen; and brothers, Harris and Johnny;
Services: 1 p.m. today, Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Burial: Argo Cemetery, Babbitt (Kerntz, Ely, Minn.).
Conroe Peterson
HALLOCK, Minn. -- Conroe Peterson, 87, Hallock, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Kittson Memorial Healthcare Center, Hallock.
Conroe Peterson was born Dec. 26, 1910, the son of Carl and Selma (Carlson) Peterson, in Hallock. He grew up and attended school in North Red River Township, Kittson County, Minn. He married Alvhild Aas on Oct. 4, 1941, in Minneapolis. He farmed in North Red River Township retiring in 1978. Alvhild Peterson died Dec. 17, 1991.
He is survived by a daughter, Susan Jesseau, Omaha, Neb.; sons, John, Hallock, and Tom, Casper, Wyo.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Grace Lutheran Church, Hallock.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock (Hughes, Hallock).
Gladys Tremel
MAHNOMEN, Minn. -- Gladys Tremel, 92, Mahnomen, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 1998, in Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home.
Gladys Busse was born Sept. 30, 1906, the daughter of John and Ida (Hein) Busse, in Beaulieu, Minn., where she attended school. She worked for Bonn's Cafe, Mahnomen. She married Frank Tremel on Oct. 29, 1935, in Beaulieu. In 1936, they moved to Bejou, Minn., where she worked for Anchor Inn. They moved to Mahnomen in 1960, where she worked for the Midtown Motel and did housekeeping. She entered the nursing home in 1993. Frank Tremel preceded her in death.
She is survived by sons, Dennis (Betty), Detroit Lakes, Minn., and John (Janet), Moorhead; a daughter, Judy (Richard) Luhman, Detroit Lakes; four grandchildren; and a brother, Wilbert, Walker, Minn.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons; a daughter, Mary; sisters, Ethel Trnka, Helen White and Violet Hillesland; and brothers, Walter, Leland, Jim and Maurice.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Saturday, St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen.
Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, with a 7 p.m. prayer service, and 9 to 10: 15 a.m. Saturday, Mattson Funeral Home, Mahnomen.
Burial: St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery.
Clarice Johnson
TWIN VALLEY, Minn. -- Clarice Johnson, 76, Twin Valley, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, in Lutheran Memorial Nursing Home.
Clarice Brateng was born July 25, 1922, the daughter of Morris and Astrie (Engman) Brateng, in Wannaska, Minn., where she attended school. She moved to East Grand Forks, where she worked for a restaurant. She married Mervin Johnson on Aug. 12, 1944, in Crookston. They made their home in Grand Forks, where she worked as a housekeeper at UND. In 1961 they moved to Twin Valley and bought the South Side Cafe and operated it until the late 1970's. In 1980 she began providing daycare in the home, until retiring in 1996.
She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Renae (Dennis) Hoekstra, Twin Valley; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Irene Osell and Marion (Ed) Haugen, both of Wannaska; and brothers, Earl, Gatzke, Minn., and Dean (Pat), Wannaska.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest; and a sister, Lila Alten.
Services: 10: 30 a.m. Friday, Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley.
Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. today, Anderson Funeral Home, Twin Valley, and one hour before services in the church.

Alma L. Doten
SOLWAY, Minn. -- Alma L. Doten, 94, Solway, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, at Beltrami Nursing Home, Bemidji, where she had lived since 1994.
Alma Lou Pittsenberger was born Oct. 8, 1904, the daughter of Ephraim and Effie (Young) Pittsenberger, in Gays Mills, Wis. They moved near Shevlin, Minn., where she attended school. She moved to Minneapolis to help her sister with her family. She married Roy Doten on Sept. 19, 1922, in Minneapolis. They moved near Shevlin where they farmed on rented land and then on their own near Solway. Roy Doten died in 1967.
She is survived by sons, Neil (Hildagarde), Somers, Mont., and Lloyd (Svanhildur), Twenty-nine Palms, Calif.; daughters, Lorraine Lewis, Bemidji, Eleanor (Richard) Ricke, Cedar, Minn., Carol (Herbert) Stegman, Drayton, N.D., and Mary Ann (Roger) Lewis, Pinewood, Minn.; 24 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, William; sisters, Gertie and Pearl; and a brother, Milton.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Solway Bible Chapel.
Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Solway Cemetery.
Gary Dobson
BAGLEY, Minn. -- Gary Dobson, 57, Pahrum, Nev., formerly of Bagley, died Sunday, Dec. 13, 1998, at home.
Gary Dobson was born Sept. 25, 1941, the son of Darrel and Dorothy (Hanson) Dobson, in Bagley, where he graduated from high school in 1959. He served in the U.S. Army from August 1961 to August 1964. He married Luanne Newland in 1966. In 1967 he moved to Minneapolis. He moved to Pahrump in 1984. He worked most of his life as a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by a daughter, Ronda (Jay) Anderson, Pittsburg, Kan.; six grandchildren; a sister, Ellen Fiege, of Florida; and a brother, Jerry, Bagley.
He was preceded in death by a brother; and a sister.
Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Rice Lutheran Church, Bagley.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Cease Family Funeral Home, Bagley, and one hour before services in the church.
Burial: Minerva Township Cemetery, Bagley.
Barbara E. Pugsley
Barbara E. Pugsley, 55, Aldrich, Minn., formerly of Grand Forks, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1998, in Greater Staples (Minn.) Hospital.
Barbara Elizabeth Johnson was born July 31, 1943, the daughter of Leland and Viola (Anderson) Johnson, in Grand Forks, where she attended school. She moved to Minneapolis, where she worked for Sterling Electric. She married Lawrence Alvern Pugsley on March 6, 1964, in St. Louis Park, Minn. They lived in Rush City, Minn., before moving to Texas, where they worked for R.G. LeTourneau's ranch. In 1966, they returned to Rush City, where they worked on a dairy farm. In 1979, they moved to Aldrich, where they owned and operated a dairy farm. She also worked for Lutheran Brotherhood.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Renee (Stuart) Frazeur, Canby, Minn., Jeannie (Gordy) Engebretson, Verndale, Minn., and Annette Pugsley, Wadena; a son, Lavern (Melanie), Verndale; eight grandchildren; sisters, Beverly (Dave) Pardee, Lansing, Mich., Sharon (Donald) Hippen, Minneapolis and Wendy (Jay) Bruce, Hatfield, Pa.; and brothers, Richard, Cloquet, Minn., and Dan (Carolyn), Coon Rapids, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Paula Diane Pugsley.

Roger A. Hannah
ERSKINE, Minn. -- Roger A. Hannah, 62, Erskine, formerly of Fisher, Minn., died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine.
Roger Allan Hannah was born Dec. 6, 1935, the son of Clarence and Mabel (Larson) Hannah, in Fisher. He cared for his parents, brothers and sisters for 27 years. He entered the Pioneer Memorial Care Center.
He is survived by brothers, Kenneth (Betty), Minneapolis, Bert (Gloria), Boise, Idaho, Charles (Diane) and Glenn (Carol), both of Renville, Minn., and Curt (Kathy), Baxter, Minn.; sisters, Muriel Tinkham and Vera (Edward) Pester, both of Fisher, Clarice (Donald) Anderson, Crookston, and Sharon (Wayne) Burtness, Minneapolis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Alton Tinkham.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Presbyterian Church, Crookston.

Mildred 'Millie' Lofstrand
LENGBY, Minn. -- Mildred "Millie" Lofstrand, 72, Lengby, died Sunday, Nov. 1, 1998, in Midway Care Center, Fosston, Minn.
Mildred Nelson was born Dec. 20, 1925, the daughter of Leo and Martha (Amundson) Nelson, in Bagley, Minn., where she attended school. She worked in Minneapolis for Honeywell Corporation. She returned to Bagley. She married Kenneth Lofstrand on Dec. 16, 1953, in Lengby. They lived in Fairbanks, Alaska. from 1953 to 1956, where she worked for Fairbanks Hospital. They returned to Lengby in 1956.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Wayne (Debbie), Lengby, and Tom (Cathie), Salol, Minn.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Viola Moen, Bagley.
She was preceded in death by a son, Greg; a sister, Natalie Netland; and a brother, Norman.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Fridhem Lutheran Church, Lengby.
Burial: Fridhem Lutheran Cemetery (Carlin-Hoialmen, Fosston).
John H. Ralph
John H. Ralph, 75, Detroit Lakes, Minn., formerly of East Grand Forks, died Monday, Aug. 31, 1998, at home.
John H. Ralph was born Jan. 27, 1923, the son of Frank and Ida (Peterson) Ralph, in Honeyford, N.D. He grew up and attended school in East Grand Forks. He worked for Northern Pacific Railroad. He moved to Brainerd, Minn., and owned and operated a service station until 1969, when he moved to Detroit Lakes. He worked for the City of Detroit Lakes, at the Sports Arena. For the past 15 years, he has helped his sister in the operation of the Viking Resort Motel in Detroit Lakes.
He is survived by a sister, Myrtle Erickson, Detroit Lakes.
He was preceded in death by a brother and a sister in infancy.
Services: 3 p.m. today, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Detroit Lakes.
Visitation: One hour before services in the church.
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes (West-Kjos, Detroit Lake).
