Mary Larson, age 50, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at her home.
She was born October 31, 1957 in Brainerd to Melvin and Sally Johnson.
She is survived by her children: Jeff Larson (Becky) of Duluth, Samantha Cowles (Jared) of Staples, Sabrina Larson, Amanda Larson, Hope Lalley, all of Pequot Lakes; two grandchildren: Kailey and Hunter Larson; her father, Melvin Johnson and his wife, Jewel, of Pequot Lakes; brothers: Dwayne Johnson (Kathy) of Dawson, MN, Dwight Johnson (Deb) of Pine River, Danny Johnson (Kris) of Pine River, Vernon Johnson (Deb) of Pequot Lakes, Burt Johnson of Greeneville, TN; sisters: Joyce Lael (Jim) of Clarksville, TN, Jean Price (Rick) of Tuscaloosa, AL; 22 nieces and nephews, and 29 great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Sally Johnson; brother, Merlyn Johnson; nephews: Ryan Johnson and Ricky Price.
Services were July 13 at Pleasant Hill Community Church, rural Pequot Lakes, with Pastor Howard Reed officiating.
Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes, handled the arrangements.
Alice Marie Balk
Montgomery
Alice Marie Balk, age 80, of Montgomery, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008, at her home.
Funeral services were at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery Thursday, July 3. with interment at the Calvary Cemetery in Le Sueur.
She is survived by her husband, Edward Balk of Montgomery; five children, Connie (Curt) Jackson of Northfield, Joe (Betty) Balk of Savage, Sally (Greg) Radermacher of New Prague, Chuck (Kathy) Balk of Brainerd, and Mike (Claudia) Balk of Hastings; brothers, Tony (Bonnie) Wieland of Le Center and Dick (Delores) Wieland of St. Henry; aunts, Marcella Hayden of Le Sueur, Monica Traxler of Le Sueur, and Ethel Phelps of Lake Miltona; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents and sister, Mary Lou Haunigan.
Henry G. "Hank" Bergersen
Minneapolis and Crosslake
Henry "Hank" Bergersen, retired Minneapolis fireman, passed away. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Charlotte. He is survived by sons, Brooks (Sandra) and Dr. Dean (Sandra); four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Mabel Jensen and Louella Hage; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Henry and Charlotte retired to Crosslake where they were charter members of the American Legion Post #500.
Memorial service was Friday, July 11, 2008. Cremation Society of MN, 4343 Nicollet Ave. South, Minneapolis, handled the arrangements.
Richard D. Tappe
Pine River
Richard D. Tappe, age 78, of Pine River, passed away Monday, July 7, 2008, at St. Cloud Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born January 2, 1930, near Sebeka, to Carl and Anna (Nightengale) Tappe.
After graduation from Pine River High School, Richard served in the U.S. Air Force from Nov. 1948 to Sept. 1953. He served in Korea from Aug. 1952 to July 1953, where he was a radio man on C-47 airplanes and was a member of the Kyushu Gypsies, a med-evac squadron. After his honorable discharge, he married Glenna, his best friend and soul mate, on Oct. 3, 1953.
He worked for Land/Air Inc., first as an electrician and later as a crew chief. His last year for that company was spent in Sacramento, CA, where he served as a company representative to the Air Force. In May 1960, Richard and Glenna bought his parents' farm west of Pine River. They were dairy farmers for 32 years. They had a wonderful life together for almost 55 years. In later years, they enjoyed going to New Ulm, where they attended both Heritagefest and Oktoberfest, and really enjoyed the German hospitality and dancing together.
He was very civically active. He served on the Walden Township board, the Cass-Crow Wing Farmers Home Administration, Pine River School Board for 17 years, Cass County Planning Commission, Cass County Budget Committee, and the Cass County Board of Adjustment.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Glenna (Salfisberg); children, Linda Janssen, Richard M. (Jackie) and Scott (April); sister, Carla Hodgson of Circle Pines; and 10 loving grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Dale.
Services were Friday, July 11, 2008 at the First Lutheran Church, Pine River.
Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home, Pine River.
George O. Hall
Pequot Lakes
George O. Hall, age 78, of Pequot Lakes, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008, at his home. He was born Dec. 30, 1930 in Etowah, Tennessee to James and Isabell Hall. He married Virginia Moberg on June 5, 1954 in Pequot Lakes.
He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Morocco, Africa. During his time in the Navy, he traveled throughout much of the world before retiring in 1974. After retirement, he farmed in the Pequot Lakes area. He served on the Crow Wing County Soil and Water Conservation Committee, Pequot Lakes School Board, and the building committee at Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He received a conservation award for planting a vast number of trees.
George was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed his annual deer hunt with his many friends. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, with a great interest in family geneology.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia; daughter, Cheri Darden of Pequot Lakes; brothers: John Hall of Georgia, Dan Watson of Florida; sisters: Mary Dalton of South Carolina, Maggie Knox of Georgia; grandchildren: Tiffany Darden and Brent Mose. He was preceded in death by his brother, Cleon; half brothers, Charles and Holdy; sister, Ellen Price; and daughter, Cynthia Mose.
Services will be 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 24 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Pequot Lakes, with Rev. Dr. David Stevens officiating. Burial will follow at Our Savior's Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kline Funeral Home, Pequot Lakes, and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Ron Herbote
Brainerd
Ron Herbote, age 49, resident of Brainerd, passed away at his home on July 16, 2008. Ron was born Nov. 30, 1958 in Rockville, Connecticut.
He is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Kim (Lamb) Herbote; son Brandon Herbote; daughter, Heather Benedett; son-in-law, Nick Benedett; granddaughter, Mya Benedett; parents, Otto and Elaine Herbote; brother, Randy Herbote; sister-in-law, Missy Herbote; in-laws, Myrt Lamb and Everett Olson.
Ron was preceded in death by his grandparents, Josefine and Ludwig Koral and Dorothy and Henry Commo.
Ron lived a very fulfilling life surrounded by family and friends. His hobbies included riding his Harley, deer hunting, black powder cannons, raising corn snakes and boa constrictors, and hunting for morel mushrooms every spring. Before starting his own welding business in 2007, Ron worked at Clow Stamping in the welding department for 24 years and he also served in the Army Reserve.
Services were Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd. A gathering of family and friends was held one hour prior to the service. A celebration of Ron's life followed at The Old Waterfall.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Ron's memory.

Yvonne Frances DeMunck
Pine River
Yvonne F. DeMunck, age 86, of Pine River, passed away peacefully July 7, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer at Bethel Home in Oshkosh, Wis.
She was born Oct. 11, 1921 and was raised inAlton, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert (Bob) DeMunck, and daughter, Claire Ann DeMunck.
DeMunck and her family lived in a variety of places while her husband was employed by Pillsbury in Maine, California, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Venezuela. Throughout her life she enjoyed traveling, card playing and was president of her quilting club and enjoyed the art of Bodopteek.
She abandoned a medical career at the beginning of World War II to raise her family, while her husband served in Europe and was again called up to serve overseas during the Korean War. She was a great and loving mother/grandmother, who always made time for others.
She will always be remembered for her positive outlook on life, her warm smile, her knowledge of world events, her quilting, and lending a hand when people were in need of help.
In lieu of a visitation and funeral services, she requested that her remains join her husband and daughter at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Left to mourn her passing include Chuck DeMunck, her son, of Oshkosh, Wis.; sister-in-law, Mary DeMunck; two grandchildren, Sonya and Kaitlyn DeMunck; and a great-grandchild, Ryaan Williams.
Richard "Dick" J. Timmerman
Audubon
Richard "Dick" J. Timmerman, 60, Audubon, Minn., formerly of West Fargo, N.D., died Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008, at his home surrounded by his loving wife of 36 years, his three children and his brother, Steve, and sister-in-law, Jan, after a very short, yet courageous battle with cancer.
Richard was born July 3, 1947, to William and Elizabeth (Martin) Timmerman. He grew up and graduated from Arthur (N.D.) High School. He was the middle child of five children. After high school, Richard attended Mayville State University for a short time. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served a one-year tour in Vietnam as a Huey Helicopter crew chief. He was honorably discharged in 1969.
He married his true love, his soul mate, Roxy Engstrom, on April 23, 1971, of which to this union three beautiful children were born. Dick and Roxy loved the lakes, especially the Detroit Lakes area. In 1993, on their 22nd anniversary, they bought a lake home on Lake Maud. Then in 2005, they built their dream home where they planned to retire. In July 2007, Dick was diagnosed with liver cancer.
Dick had an extreme love of life. He was an amazing human being who would visit with anyone. He loved the lakes, fishing, hunting with his brother, son and uncle, and going to the Cormorant Pub. He loved to have fun with his friends and was always the life of the party. Being "papa" to his grandchildren, especially oldest grandchild, Maddy, was a highlight of later years.
Dick is survived by his loving wife, Roxy of Audubon; one son, Richard Jr. (Danielle) of Minot Air Force Base, N.D.; two daughters, Richelle (John) Mewes of Mayville, N.D., Raelle (Nathan) Vos of Fargo, N.D.; mother, Elizabeth; two brothers, Steve (Jan), Bill (Gina), all of Arthur; one sister, Betty (Rich) Hunt of Virginia Beach, Va.; eight grandchildren, Ethan, Gavin and John Mewes, Madison and Corbin Vos, Alyssa, Abigail and Isabelle Timmerman; brothers-in-law, Richard (Mary) Engstrom of Pequot Lakes, Minn., Mert Palmer of Casselton, N.D.; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; sister, Rebecca Palmer; and his in-laws, George and Thelma Engstrom.
Margaret Flier
Backus
Margaret Flier, age 72, of Backus, passed away Monday, May 26, 2008 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Funeral services were June 2, 2008 at the Goodland Presbyterian Church in Goodland, MN, with Pastor Broom officiating. A private family interment will be at a later date.
Margaret Rose Flier was born on Nov. 9, 1935 in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, the daughter of Joseph and Mary Ann (Tremblet) Barry. She grew up and attended school in Corner Brook, NFLD. On Nov. 14, 1953 she was united in marriage to Richard Flier. She lived in the Goodland, MN area for 31 years, then moved to Backus, where she lived the next 20 years. Four months ago she moved to Avon, to live with her daughter, Karen, and her son-in-law, James, because of her health. Among the things she enjoyed were gardening, birds, word find puzzles, and people. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the loves of her life.
Margaret will be dearly missed by her children, Cheryl (John) Gangl, of Nashwauk, Cindy (Ken) Kleinschmidt, of Little Falls, Rick (June) Flier, of Aitkin, Karl (Karen) Flier, of Backus, Karen (James) Calgaro, of Avon, and Randy (Donna) Flier, of Aitkin; 20 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Patrick Barry, of Corner Brook, New Foundland, Winnifred (Robert) Holmes, of Ottawa, Ontario, Josephine (Wilmore) Howell, of Corner Brook, New Foundland, and Robert (Rita) Barry, of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Ann; brother, Thomas Barry; and grandson, Aaron Gangl.

Rudolph (Rudy) Glenn Otto
Pequot Lakes
Rudolph (Rudy) Glenn Otto was a great little basketball player.
Rudy was born to Othmar and Marguerite Otto (Johnson) on Nov. 2, 1934. He passed away Nov. 24, 2007. He graduated from Pequot Lakes High School, Pequot Lakes, in 1952. He joined the Navy and served from 1952 to 1956. He worked as a meat cutter for Red Owl groceries, also worked for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune before moving to Arizona in 1971. He owned his own business and later worked for Maciopa County Prisons as head cook until he retired.
He is survived by three brothers, Kenneth Otto of Britt, IA, Omer (Betty) of Canby, OR, Ronald (Carol) of Mankato; one sister, Ione (Steve) Bird of Mesa, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Delos; two sisters, Evangeline Pies and Verdella Owens.
Burial was at Veteran's National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix.
