Dennis Lynnea Larson
Dennis Lynnea Larson, 84, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 18, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by Sleepy Eye Honor Guard. Visitation will take place at Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., and Thursday, 7:30-9:30 a.m., with a parish prayer service Wednesday, 7 p.m., at the funeral home.
Dennis was born on a farm near Boy's Lake, Springfield, on April 4, 1918, the son of Lavis and Olga (Bellig) Larson. He grew up on the farm, claiming Cobden as his home town. After his father's death in 1928, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Alma and Adolph Remmele. Dennis graduated from Sleepy Eye High School in 1936, and attended Mankato Teacher's College for a year-and-a-half, majoring in Industrial Arts. He served in the United States Army, entering the service from St. Peter in January of 1941. Dennis served in the 215th Field Artillery Unit for the Army National Guard stationed for the most part in Kodiak, Alaska, until September of 1945. After WWII, he returned to Minnesota where he drove street car in Minneapolis for several years before accepting a position at the Sleepy Eye Post Office in 1948. Dennis married Flavia Bertrand on Feb. 7, 1948, at St. Mary's Rectory in Sleepy Eye. He was a rural mail carrier for most of his postal service career, retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sleepy Eye, the Knights of Columbus, Sleepy Eye VFW, American Legion and Eagles Club. He was involved in the Sleepy Eye Men's Bowling Association, serving as its first secretary. Dennis enjoyed gardening, golfing and bowling and was elected to the local bowling Hall of Fame. After retirement, Dennis drove school bus and bartended at the Sleepy Eye Golf Club for several years. He also stayed busy in his woodworking shop, spending many hours making making articles for family and friends.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Flavia Larson of Sleepy Eye; son, Tom Larson of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Maxine and husband Mo Yarnold of Goodrich, Mich.; granddaughters, Tami and James Gray, Stacy and Jason Cowan, and Laura and Margie Yarnold; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Dylan and Alexis; sister-in-law, Sally Peterson of Savage and brother-in-law, Medard Bertrand of Kansas City, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews.
Astor Aukrust
Astor Glendor Aukrust, 83, Sleepy Eye, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002, at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. Funeral services were held Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Hanska. Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye handled the arrangements.
Astor was born Jan. 14, 1919, near Hanska to Ole and Lena (Gudwagen) Aukrust. He attended District #67 County School, after which he continued to live in the Hanska area. On Oct. 6, 1943, Astor married Evelyn Hose at the Lutheran Parsonage in St. James. Following marriage, the couple moved to Sleepy Eye, where Astor worked with Del Monte Corporation, the Sleepy Eye Creamery, drove truck for Pietrus Foods, drove school bus for Marti Bus Lines and drove a van, delivering newspapers for the Sleepy Eye Herald-Dispatch for a number of years. Astor was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye and was confirmed at Lake Hanska Lutheran Church. He enjoyed being with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, visiting with his many friends, sight seeing, driving, watching professional wrestling on television, going to auction sales and watching his son race cars.
Astor his survived by his wife, Evelyn Aukrust of Sleepy Eye; daughter, Rosie and husband Luverne Krzmarzick of Sleepy Eye, sons, Richard and wife Jane Aukrust of Hanska and Donald and wife Maggie Aukrust of Brooklyn Center; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Borghild and husband Elwyn Sperl of Elysian and Helga and husband Raymond Lodes of New Ulm; sister-in-law, Donna Mae Augustin; brother-in-law, Gordon Hose, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ole and Lena; daughter, Dee Lindsey in 1996; his father and mother-in-law; sisters-in-law, Caroline Olson, Elzina Christensen and Verna Hose; brothers-in-law, Raymond Hose, Leonard Hose, Jan Christensen and Russell Augustin.
Clarence Bertrand
Clarence Bertrand, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died March 4, 2002, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. E. Bertrand, born in Cobden.
Clarence served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He married Violet Meier in 1952. After 44 years of service at Salkin and Linoff of Minneapolis, Clarence retired as store manager. He then worked for St. Vincent DePaul for nine and one half years, and eight years at I29 Brick Company.
Clarence is survived by his brother, Kenny of Sioux Falls, S.D. and a sister, Elizabeth Walsh of Chicago.
Curtis C. "Curt" Brand
Curtis C. Brand, 60, New Ulm, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at New Ulm Medical Center in New Ulm. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm, with interment in New Ulm Catholic Cemetery. Full military honors were conducted by New Ulm Veterans organizations. Minnesota Valley Funeral Home handled the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to New Ulm Area Catholic Schools.
Curt was born Nov. 4, 1941, in New Ulm, to Joseph and Sophia (Kuehn) Brand. He attended Catholic school in New Ulm and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1962. After graduation, he served in the United States Army from January 1964, to January 1966. After his discharge, Curt worked for Donahue Sanitation in New Ulm. Curt married Judy Gillick on July 3, 1970, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Ulm. Curt and Judy owned and operated Brand's Sanitation that they started together in 1975. Curt was a member of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm, the St. Joseph's Catholic Aid Council and the Seifert Bianchi American Legion Post #132 in New Ulm.
Curt is survived by his wife, Judy Brand of New Ulm; daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Lee McConnell of New Brighton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Gene Schmitz, Marlys Drill and Joleen and Warren Jorgensen, all of New Ulm, LaDonna Kissner and Doris and Wesley Guemmer, all of St. Cloud, and Carol and Jim Krueggel of Winthrop; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald and Myrtle Brand, David Brand and Robert and Lucille Brand, all of New Ulm, Kenneth Brand of Glenview, Ill., and Marvin Brand of St. Peter. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Diane Carley; and brothers, Lowell and Gerald Brand.
Raymond "Ray" Duscher
Raymond "Ray" Duscher, 92, Redwood Falls, died Tuesday, April 9, 2002, at Wood Dale Nursing Home in Redwood Falls. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Redwood Falls, with interment in the church cemetery. Sunset Funeral Home of Echo handled the arrangements.
Ray was born Aug. 26, 1909, in Redwood Falls, the son of William and Mary (Welter) Duscher. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Catherine's Catholic Church. Ray was a life long resident of Redwood Falls, growing up and attending Redwood Falls Public Schools. On June 23, 1936, Ray was united in marriage to Geraldine F. Kolp in St. Catherine's Parsonage in Redwood Falls. Ray worked as a mechanic at the Ford Garage, until purchasing the Sinclair Station, which he operated for a number of years. He then worked for Forester's Furniture, the Elevator and Home Gas. Ray also drove school bus for Thielen Bus Service for 16 years, being known by all the kids as "Grandpa Ray," and drove the Senior Citizen van up until weeks before his death. Ray was a life long member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church, where he was very active, serving as lay minister, usher, and faithfully folding bulletins every Friday. Ray loved his family and enjoyed woodworking, working in his yard and garden, visiting and serving others. He truly loved all kids.
Ray is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children, Phyllis and husband Marlin Hennen of Shakopee, Shirley Redmann of Redwood Falls, Warren and wife Jean Duscher of Wichita, Kan., Donna and husband Don Reding of Morgan, Steven and wife Jackie Duscher of Appleton, Wisc., and Thomas and wife Sandy Duscher of Englewood, Colo.; grandchildren, Brad and Brian Hennen, Cheryl Larsen, Julie and Mark Redman, Lisa Groebner, Penny Moore, Christy Havice, Troy Reding, Michele Quast, Chad, Corey, Ryan and Shane Reding, Paul, Stephanie, Hilary and Scott Duscher; 23 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Rosella Malecha of Redwood Falls, Norma Honzay of Olivia, William and wife Cathy Duscher of Lucan, Maryann Donner of Spicer, James and wife Laverne Duscher of Sleepy Eye, and Delores and husband Elmer Hartwig of Mankato. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leroy and Edward; and a son-in-law, Merlin Redmann.
Casket bearers were his grandsons.
Maybelle "Belle" Engdahl
Maybelle "Belle" Engdahl, 86, died Friday, April 12, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 20, at the First Presbyterian Church in St. James, with interment in Mount Hope Cemetery, St. James. Visitation will take place Friday, 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon at the Sturm Funeral Home in St. James, and will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Belle was born May 17, 1915 to Henry C. and Marie (Ecklund) Hansen in Butterfield Township. She attended the District #44 School in Adrian Township. On Nov. 23, 1935, she was joined in marriage to Vernie H. "Mike" Engdahl in St. James. Belle lived most of her younger years on the farm in Butterfield, sharing in an equal partnership in farming with Mike. After 30 years, Belle moved to St. James to support in Mike's law enforcement career. She served as a Watonwan County matron laundry lady for the jail and hosted all comers in her home. Belle loved people, from jail patrons to her beloved brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. She was nicknamed "Pee Wee" by her beloved nephews. In her early years, Belle enjoyed church work in both Presbyterian church's of Butterfield and St. James. She was also an active Eastern Star member in the Comfrey chapter. Belle loved to "clean," cook and mow her lawn. Her greatest happiness came from a spotless house, happy relatives and many good and loyal friends. In her later years, Belle enjoyed taking care of her two granddaughters, Nicole and Natalie. She loved to travel and enjoyed collecting dolls. Many of her hours were spent picking out new dolls for her granddaughters. Mike and Belle's most recent move was to the Countryside Retirement Community in Sleepy Eye.
Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband, Mike of 66 and one-half years; daughter, Kathy Marie and husband John Oglesby of Sleepy Eye; granddaughters, Nicole Marie of Minneapolis and Natalie May of Sleepy Eye; sisters-in-law, Eldoris Hansen of Waseca, Florence Tande of Walker, and Ovida Engdahl of Arlington; brothers-in-law, and Herbert Engdahl of St. James, Henry and wife Marlyn Engdahl of Butterfield; and many nieces and nephews. Belle was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Harry, Delbert and Henry; and sisters, Delia Hansen, Maude Brown and Edith Curry.
Casket bearers were Sally Engel, Leslie Milbrath, Denise Olson, June Engelking, Jean Pew and Karen Curry.
Roman "Lefty" Bertrand
Roman "Lefty" Bertrand, formerly of Sleepy Eye, died Sunday, March 17, in Oregon. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. P. E. Bertrand, born in Cobden. Lefty graduated from St. Mary's High School in Sleepy Eye. He played baseball around the upper Midwest and Canada and later played for the Philadelphia Philly's. He worked for the Wasco County P.U.D. first as employee and later as general manager, until retiring in 1974.
Lefty is survived by his wife, Thelma; two sons; sister, Elizabeth Walsh and a brother, Kenny Bertrand of Sioux Falls, S.D.
Robert J. "Bob" Ludewig
Robert J. "Bob" Ludewig, 55, Loveland, Colo., died Monday, April 8, 2002 at his home. Funeral services were held Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Loveland, with interment in Peachtree City, Ga. Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Bob was born Aug. 6, 1946, in Sleepy Eye, the son of Vetalis and Emma (Treml) Ludewig. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corp. for which he served during the Vietnam Conflict. In 1989, Bob moved to Fort Collins, Colo., and then to Loveland in 1994. He was an active member of St. John's Catholic Church, Loveland, and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Bob is survived by his wife, Donna M. Ludewig of Loveland; son, Keith and wife Corina Ludewig of Newman, Ga.; daughter, Shanna Ludewig of Arlington, Tenn.; grandsons, Matthew and Christopher "Chris" Ludewig of Newnan, Ga.; brothers, Leo and wife Bernice Ludewig of Comfrey, and Donald and wife Kathy Ludewig of Sleepy Eye; sisters, Betty and husband Duane Doran of Everly, Iowa and Linda and husband Lester Braulick of New Ulm; and mother-in-law, Marie Sprenger of New Ulm. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
Gordon R. Hose
Gordon R. Hose, 82, Sleepy Eye, formerly of St. James, died Saturday, April 20, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Care Center in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Union Congregational Church, U.C.C., Sleepy Eye, with interment in Home Cemetery, Sleepy Eye. Sturm Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Gordon was born Sept. 24, 1919, in Prairieville Township, Brown County, the son of Richard and Syrelda (Cossins) Hose. He attended rural school. After his schooling, Gordon farmed with his father and brother, Raymond, and later worked on some area farms. Gordon was a member of Union Congregational Church U.C.C. He enjoyed being with his family, nieces, nephews and friends. Gordon enjoyed gardening, watching the crops grow and some woodworking. He also enjoyed going to the Cossins family reunions each summer.
Gordon is survived by his sisters, Evelyn Aukrust and Donna Mae Augustin, both of Sleepy Eye; brother-in-law, Raymond Olson of Comfrey; nieces; nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Caroline Olson and Elzina Christensen; brothers, Raymond Hose and Leonard Hose; sister-in-law, Verna Hose; brothers-in-law, Jens Christensen, Russell Augustin and Astor Aukrust.
Casket bearers were Ron Augustin, Steve Augustin, Dan Augustin, Don Aukrust, Gerald Christensen and Brad Helget.
Chrys Ann Baarts
Chrys Ann Baarts, 46, Vernon Center, died Sunday, June 2, 2002, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato. Funeral services were held Wednesday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Vernon Center with interment in Vernon Center Cemetery. Lake Crystal Mortuary handled the arrangements. Memorials are preferred to St. Peter's Lutheran Church or to the Vernon Center Fire and Rescue Squad.
Chrys was born Feb. 27, 1956, in Sleepy Eye, the daughter of Richard R. and Bobbie J. (Seidl) Stimpert. She graduated from New Ulm High School and later attended Mankato State University. Chrys married H. Calvin Baarts on Dec. 30, 1978. She worked at Lake Crystal Elementary School in Lake Crystal and Franklin Elementary School in Mankato, prior to owning and operating Vernon Center Lumber. She was also the bookkeeper for Baarts Construction for many years. Chrys was active with the First Responders Vernon Center Fire and Rescue Squad and was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Vernon Center. Chrys enjoyed quilting, ceramics, cross stitch and her dog, Frosty.
Chrys is survived by her husband, H. Calvin Baarts of Vernon Center; sons, Eric and Adam Baarts, both of Vernon Center; parents, Richard and Bobbie Stimpert of Simi Valley, Calif.; brothers, Scott Stimpert and wife Theresa Stone of Amherst, N. H., and Daniel Stimpert of Los Angeles, Calif.; niece, Lauren Stimpert of Amherst, N.H.; nephew, Ryan Stimpert of Amherst, N.H.; father- and mother-in-law, Harold and Florence Baarts of Vernon Center; and aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; and a son, Scott in 1984.
Agnes Anna Fromm
Agnes Anna Fromm, 86, Sleepy Eye, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, 10:30 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sleepy Eye, with interment in the church cemetery. Visitation is Wednesday, 4-8 p.m., and Thursday, 7:30-9:30 a.m. at Sturm Funeral Home in Sleepy Eye.
Agnes was born Jan. 27, 1916, in Mulligan Township, Brown County, the daughter of Joseph and Otilia (Hickel) Neid. She grew up on a farm near Comfrey, and attended St. Paul's Catholic School in Comfrey. On July 6, 1938, Agnes married John Fromm, and together they raised 13 children. The couple farmed in Prairieville Township for many years. John preceded Agnes in death in 1964. Agnes moved into Sleepy Eye in 1976, where she was active in a number of activities. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, where she was involved in the quilting group as well as the Christian Mothers. Agnes also served as the secretary of the Catholic Aid Association for many years. She loved to travel and quilt, but mostly she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Agnes is survived by her children, Ervin and wife Dignora Fromm of Sioux Falls, S.D., Ed and wife Kathy Fromm of Sleepy Eye, David and wife Janis Fromm of Eagle Lake, Clete and wife Dawn Fromm of Owatonna, Michael and wife Gail Fromm of Claremont, Mark and wife Rolene Fromm of Mankato, Joel and wife Lois Fromm of New Ulm, Rose Fromm of Sleepy Eye, Doris and husband Leo Csukker of Fairfax, Carol and husband Michael Whitney of Mankato; daughter-in-law, Rosie Fromm of Sleepy Eye; brothers, Bernard Neid of St. James, Alois Neid of Glencoe and Joe and wife Joyce Neid of Sleepy Eye; and her sister, Marie and husband Tom Kelly of Frankenmuth, Mich. Agnes is also survived by 33 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; brothers, Norbert and Roman; daughter-in-law, Judy in 1971; daughter, Joanne in 1972; son, Jerome in 1991; great-grandson, Matthew in 2001; and son, Eugene in December of 2001.
Frances Louise Johnson
Frances Louise Johnson, 92, Sleepy Eye, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital in Sleepy Eye. Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 6, 11 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sleepy Eye, with interment in Minnesota Lake Cemetery, Minnesota Lake. Visitation will be held Thursday, 9:30-11 a.m. at the church. Arrangements were handled by Sturm Funeral Home of Sleepy Eye.
Frances was born May 17, 1910, in Verona, Pa., the daughter of George and Mary (Baldwin) Carter. She moved with her family, settling in Borup, where she graduated from high school. Frances attended Mankato State University, and taught country school in Red River Valley for a few years. She married Lawrence P. Johnson on Aug. 27, 1937, in Ada. The couple made their home and farmed in the Crosby-Ironton area. They moved to Minneapolis in 1943, and later to Wadena in 1946. Frances and Lawrence moved to Detroit Lakes in 1955, where they operated the Dairy Queen until moving to Sleepy Eye in 1961. While in Sleepy Eye, Frances was the librarian for the Sleepy Eye Public High School for 14 years. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Sleepy Eye Senior Citizens and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Frances volunteered at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield, and was Brown County Senior Citizen of the Year in 1982. She enjoyed reading, as well as reading to grade school children, needle art, bird watching, traveling and gardening.
Frances is survived by her daughters, Marilyn Stall of Litchfield, and DonnaRae and husband Gregory Sonnek of Easton; sister, Viola Kelly of Escondido, Calif., grandchildren, Douglas and John Sonnek and Theodore and Christopher Stall; great-grandchildren, McKenzie and Samuel Sonnek. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lawrence in 1970; and son, William in 1941.
